Some questions before ordering - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
i have watched all the reviews, read so many threads at xda, and asked some people about their experience with the one, but there are still some questions left that just owners of the one can tell.
There are already so much Cyanogen and AOKP roms for the one, but how do they perform in daily use? Ive heard that htc devices arent the most custom rom friendly devices, so are there any doubts that there will be a fully working cyanogen/aokp build in the near future?
Ive seen kernels adding the functionality of a capacitive button to the htc logo - is this just a workaround, that just works if the finger touches the screen above the logo, or is the logo a real button? If it is just a workaround, does it work flawless?
AOKP/Cyanogen roms and three capacitive buttons are a must have for me, so please, tell me your opinion about my doubts.
Thanks a lot!

HTC logo is not a real button. It works by touching the top where the digitizer is.
Sent from my HTC One

Thanks for your answer.
So the area around the logo, not the logo itself is capacitive? Does it work as responsive as the back and home keys?
I really need three fully working and responsive buttons, if the logo-mod is unresponsive at times this would be a no-go for me...

I think the HTC One will be able to handle anything Cyanogen Mod can throw at it.

In fact, HTC has traditionally attracted the biggest and most dev teams for ROMS and Kernels. The HTC logo has absolutely no capacitive capabilities, the kernel just makes the last few pixels on the screen near the logo to activate it.
I wouldn't go for AOSP/CM roms just yet as camera quality (which is a big selling point) will be worse as they do not have proper drivers to interact with ImageSense yet

Thanks for your answer. I know that AOKP/CM builds are in a very early stage, but does the future look good, or are there any concerns that some major issues may never be solved?

Oh okey, i`ve already thought that. Have you used that mod and is it reliable anyway?

There isn't any major issues that need to be solved, and if the HTC One Google Edition is real, it should come with the necessary drivers to power all the hardware, which AOSP/CM can then use on their ROMs and Kernels
I have not tested it yet cos I have not unlocked my phone. The NFC chip isn't working properly so I'm gonna send mine back for an exchange before doing anything that may void my warranty

Thoughts on the T-Mobile G2X as compared to the Nexus

I currently own a Nexus S and love it. I just wanted to get your opinions on The G2X and how it may compare to the NS. Aside from lacking gingerbread, what other potential downsides am i looking at? What are the upsides? I'm just looking for constructive feedback. No Flame throwing

The Nexus S beats it in every department except video recording, so its up to you what you deem important
Nexus S is fast, amazing screen and housing which make the phone when off look like a black slab of coal, also when the phone is on the blacks stay that colour, so you dont know where the screen starts and finishes...
The Nexus S is the real deal mate, i cant see anything living up to its quality, except for maybe the SGSII
JD
Im having the same problem. But im also wondering between my Nexus s, the new T-Mobile G2X and upcoming HTC Pyramid.
My opinion.
Nexus s - Love this phone, have nothing bad to say, never had all the issues everyone was having (rebooting).
T-Mobile G2X - Reviews say the phone is sluggish for a phone with dual core, but it might be due to the custom UI. The G2X comes with stock gingerbread which is a plus but how how easy will this be to developers to root and install custom rom. Have never had a LG phone and dont know how the quality is.
HTC Pyramid - Still needs to be released but the spec looks amazing and I love HTC quality (nexus one). Recently HTC had not been too nice to devs. with G2 and Thunderbolt.
Wait til all the phone get released and then see what happens, see what fits for me.
nexus s is the real deal....unless yours is with tmobile....then in 2 years...its useless (unless you enjoy using a smartphone for 2g)
thats just a techinicality, most of us will move on by then, but the gx2 needs some more time before we can dive into it. but its dual core and 4g, cant really hate on that. ofcourse battery life can be a good fight (im on 22hrs and 30minutes on my nexus s right now and its still at 15%)
amoled screen is another thing...the fact that it doesnt have gingerbread is not abig deal at all, from what i read this is reaallly stock android with the exception of some apps, not skins or UI

Yeah i hope we are able to see some hands-on vids today. I agree that only time will tell if its a winner or not. Those specs do make it seem like a beast of a phone though, and stock android has a significant place in my heart.

I definitely would not buy anything less that a screen with AMOLED. I was a HTC fanatic, i owned the HTC Desire, Nexus One, Desire Z (G2) and the HD. But once you convert to Samsung you never look back, i could never have a SLCD screen again(greyish blacks yuk)...
But i do miss Sense sometimes, and i know that's a contentious issue in this forum as there are so many Sense haters here, but i like having the choice to mix up my ROM's by having stock for a few months then Sense for a few months.. With the Nexus S your pretty much restricted to stock or MIUI, But thank god for the MIUI release, its invigorated the dev forum. Lots of kernels and same-ish ROM's, thank god we have something new to play with

I used to feel the same way when I had my Epic 4G. I thought I could put up with anything for a SAMOLED but then I started playing with an Evo. Sure, the screen as quite as brilliant but a great screen does not a device make. I've made my opinion on Sense clear but I won't dis on someone else's enjoyment of it (doesn't mean I don't get tired of seeing new threads pop up asking for it). The only thing that would really make me not want to get a Pyramid is if the bootloader is as locked down as the Thunderbolt but something tells me that was something Verizon wanted but that is a personal hunch supported by absolutely no evidence so don't quote me on it. I could easily give up the SAMOLED, hell it makes me feel more comfortable running bright themes and I think it helps devs want to make them.

i dont find it ugly at all.. just the bottom of the phone is a little bit exaggerated and could of added more screen size rather than having blank spots; probably something internal of the phone hardware that prevented that or they didnt want to overextend the screen size

Well... it looks snappy, but it's quite obvious the video is sped up. I know for a fact people's fingers don't move like that, all jittery lol. And if it's really using stock android, that stock launcher should animate just like our stock launcher, and it's way too fast in the video (opening the app drawer etc).

Vanilla android?

I was waiting on the sgs4, but after the cringe worthy unveiling last night…Im not 100% sold on it. Even with a nice vanilla rom, the hardware looks a bit boring (yeah, the screen does look nice…plus I bet the cpu+gpu will be awesome)…so my next choice is the HTC One. However, I don’t see any posts talking about Roms (other than stock/sense roms)…is this because its new…or is there an issue and custom vanilla android roms might not come out straight away?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I know whats what before jumping in (I know for example, the sgs2 couldn’t get JB roms working 100% because it was missing the Sammy HW compressor at one point)
Cheers guys

It's just a matter of time till the No-Sense script (I believe that's what it was called for most htc phones) is adapted for the One.
However, out of the box you should be able to use something like Nova launcher to give you as much vanilla as you can get without rooting.
Hope it helped

You have to wait for someone to develope AOSP for this device. Typically, you have some one try to get CM going, then you'll get aokp and so on if this device is popular enough.

Would be Sony Ericsson, but the Xperia X1 was build by HTC just Software was SE.
it will need some time until someone figures out how everthing works with snapdragon cpu and until htc delivers some kernel sources... hopefully they will update to 4.2.2 anytime soon with kernel sources to get stable cm10.1

Is there really any need to flash a custom Rom on the One?

Firstly, please don't get me wrong here. Im not trolling in the slightest and I really appreciate all the work the devs do here.
With the HTC One having such high specs is there really any need to flash custom Roms? In my opinion all of them seem the same and don't look or feel any different to the stock rom on the One. The only benefit I can see is for Root access.
Im sure there is a lot of "under the hood" tweaks that are done but are these really noticeable or beneficial to the end user? Other peoples thoughts would be interesting.

Actually yes, I wish to get CM working fully on HTC One.
It gives us an alternate experience than what HTC wanted us to.
Best of all, you don't have to wait so long for HTC to update their phones.
Especially when they abandon the One, we rely on CM.
But I'm really hoping for the success of the One, nobody could resist the look and feel of the One.

That's subjective I guess. But for something like example HTC DROID DNA or Butterfly, Sense 5 gets ported before HTC did. So I guess it's also a huge benefit.
Earlier updates is the main reason why I will be rooting, these phone networks take ages to update it's unavailable!!
Also there are some very nice skinned roms out there
I won't be unlocking my bootloader for a while. Not until I am at least sure that my device is working 100% and that will take a couple of weeks. I was eager to root it etc but I was reading about HTC's warranty and it seems as though it is a very long winded process. Maybe you wish to do the same?

yep ill be in no hurry either.
when i finally get a device im happy with yea i will root and flash custom rom, but not CM - Sense 5 is great and IMO is much better than stock JB - there are a few minor things I would like added, but I have no doubt they will be added to custom sense 5 roms in due course.
to me, there is no point in being a flashaholic. flash the latest stable base, and then keep up with custom kernels for battery.
thats me, idk bout u guys
Personally something that will push me over the unlock bootloader line is when either when A) IF the HTC logo can become mapped as a button, or B) A full relock becomes available lol
For me, absolutely. I consider some features (such as long press vol key to skip tracks) essential. There are also always some visual things I like to change no matter how well it is made
I just need root to enable volume key wake, and ill want to remap the keys. Everything else looks flawless

While there's obviously no NEED, a lot of people will prefer to flash ROMs for a variety of different reasons.
I'd say the main reasons are;
*The ability to have a pure AOSP look which is preferred by a lot of people (especially those who come from a Nexus device). Also, a lot of people don't like the look/feel of Sense and will therefore want to change the UI to something which is more preferable to them.
I, for example, have never tried Sense before and could quite possibly hate it once I finally test it. On the flip side of that, I may love it but at least custom ROMs will give me the ability to completely change the UI whilst giving me a ton more customizations and optimizations than a custom launcher would do.
*As mentioned at the end of the first reason, customization is a huge part of what a lot of people do with their devices. For example, when I had my SGS2 I used to love the ability to flash a simple ROM and have a ton of customization at my fingertips, so I could edit the look of my phone to my hearts content.
*Some people are simply flashaholics and have ORD (Obsessive ROM-flashing/updating Disorder). I'll normally flash every ROM in sight if the device is new and there aren't many ROMs available yet. This way it gives me a good early decision as to what type of ROM I'd prefer on said device. However, once the device starts getting more development and more ROMs start appearing in quick succession, I'll then make my mind up about which ROM to choose and generally won't change ROM for the vast majority of the devices lifetime.
Got a HTC? Join the HTC Hangout Thread
I unlocked, rooted and flashed now because in a few months time the phone will be setup perfectly; all the right apps, all the right data, all in the right place (and HTC might of discovered a way to do a Sensation on us (S-Off))
With the phone rooted I can be relatively confident of getting it back to my currently backed up state after any major updates (and, when I finally install some games, get their progress restored as well)

Sense means HTC. I don't see any reason to buy HTC if I'm not gonna use sense.
Because HTC makes great hardware. I buy HTC exclusively, but I rip sense off it ASAP and put AOKP or CM or something without sense. Nexus devices are generally not top of the line hardware, they're supposed to be a benchmark for development (i.e. midrange). That said, N4 has more impressive specs than usual, but I can't imagine buying an LG phone. I have never realized LG even made smartphones, only flip phones until the N4 was released.
Still, HTC makes best hardware, I just generally don't like sense. That said, sense 5 does look interesting.

To a certain extent, yes, I agree with you on that statement. However, sometimes you just need a change and it is nice to have the option of running AOSP roms as well. I would much rather go back and forth between Sense/AOSP than TouchWiz/AOSP after having my GS3.
No. Roms are for old devices. Lol

Switching from S3 to M7

Hi, I am a visitor from the s3 forums,
I am thinking of switching to the HTC one,
Background about me: Have rooted all my previous android devices (TF101. Captivate (sgh-897) Gnex, s3)
I have a couple questions,
Questions:
Any quirks?
How different is sense from aosp
How much storage are you given? (32 GB)
Are the devs nice here?
Is it hard to root and unlock bootloader?
What is s-off and what does it do?
Does the beats amp work with AOSP roms?
Coming from the S4, I personally love this phone. Sense is much better than Touchwiz. Easy to root and unlock the bootloader. The Devs are some of the best I've seen. Very helpful, and the Roms are pretty much flawless

The devs are awesome here very committed and helpful. But you do get your odd xda member who is really rude. Sure it's the case anywhere though. It's easy to root and unlock bootloader. Takes about ten minutes longer than a nexus if you know what your doing. S off is a bit harder. But that's probs cause I don't know what am doing with that yet and don't feel a need for it. Not sure about last question .

1. quirks:
(hardware) camera issues if the phone is manufactured pre-july 2013 (check the forums for details, search for "red tint").
(cosmetic) check for gaps between the white plastic and the aluminium parts of the phone - they are less then 1/5mm but if you're a maniac like me, you will notice, if not you will probably not even notice them.
(hardware) check for dead or stuck pixels - you need to be really thorough as the pixels are sooooo small. The dpi for this phone is ridiculous, you'll love it!
Be sure to get a phone that has valid warranty as all these problems are warranty-covered!
2. sense:
sense is a love or hate thing - i personally love it. it's like a polished aosp with very eye-catching animations and design and much improved features (example: the mail app is brilliant, the calendar is awesome, the browser is blazing fast and still supports flash player, the dialer is brilliant, the camera interface is very well organised, the gallery app is very nice, etc..). If you do not like it you can always go GPE and run aosp roms anyway.
3. storage:
the phone comes in 32 or 64 GB storage variants. For the 32 GB option which i have, the user space available when i do a factory reset is of 29.98 GB.
4. devs:
the devs are a blessing. Really nice and helpful and always keep us up-to-date with custom ROMs
5. root and unlock:
the unlocking process is a piece of cake ans also is rooting. You will find a bunch of very informative tutorials both step-by step text and also video tuts on the forum. If you have difficulties, you can also ask questions on that threads and the users will surely give you a helping hand.
6. s-off:
s-off is basically a more advanced bootloader unlock. It allows you to do more modifications to your phone then bootloader unlock such as: downgrading, flashing custom HBOOTS, flashing radios, etc. The process of S-offing itself is very easy but you have to be very well documented in advance as you have to prepare the phone for the process and s-offing differs according to your current HBOOT version. But, of course, there are very detailed threds regarding this also.
7. beats:
yes, this feature is also available for GPE AOSP
P.S. is you come from the S3 or any other Sammy the first things you will notice:
-the screen will look very unimpressive at first because it's a SLCD and not an AMOLED. This means more accurate color gamut. The AMOLED tends to exaggerate color tones and this makes it look more vibrant. In time though you will notice that the SLCD is superiour in color reproduction as the range of colors it reproduces is higher and also, when you print or look at pictures taken with the phone on a pc screen or tv you will notice that they correspond to what's actually displayed on the phone itself. The dpi capability of the phone's display is also ridiculous..AFAIK it is the best on the market.
-the power/unlock button is idiotically placed (left top side) - WTF were htc thinking..but i got used to it and you will probably do too.
-the build quality and design is superb. The phone feels like a solid piece of matter in your hand. It doesn't squeak or squeal as the sammys plastic casing does. YOU WILL LOVE THIS
-the sound quality is superb. Both on speakers and also on headphones (especially if you have HQ headphones - do not be fooled into buying beats: they are good but too expensive for what they offer. You can get better headphones for that money (i reccomend jays - www.jays.se))
-overall, you will notice that the phone feels more premium, more mature than the samsung. The sammy feels more like a toy, while the htc feels more like a device. Both have their issues and problems but i have come to love this phone and hope you will do too.
Hope i covered all your questions and welcome to the HTC side of Xda!
upgraded from Galaxy S2 a few days ago
The Screen;
I love amoled - People always mention how saturated it is like a bad thing. The cartoony colour effect is beneficial in making text etc 'pop' on screen. I don't use the phone as a primary 'picture' viewer. However, the HTC screen is awesome . I thought low light reading in the dark would strain the eyes but it doesn't. The colour and contrast range is brilliant.
Button layout;
The volume buttons are indented and flat so you can't even feel where they are. The power button is all the way on the top, and then you have to get your thumb to the bottom of the screen and flick up. This is next to impossible with one hand. Being used to already pressing either power button as I took my galaxy out of pocket this is annoying. On stock sense you can't even deactivate the lock screen.
Apparently Kernals let you tap the home buttom or volume button to unlock the phone. A few apps use the phones sensors to 'wake' the screen so I'm going to play about with it.

So, if I were to get the att version, would I be able to flash the roms on this forum straight, or would i have to the get the international version?

Miui Rom

Would any developer be willing to create an MIUI or IOS ROM for the HTC Desire 626 Metro PCs?
MIUI: Would they- No ; Could they- Yes, but there is not a single reason to do so.
iOS - Impossible
Also, wrong section. Please try to follow forum guidelines and post in the appropriate section (q&a)

Probably a reference to JoyOS, an iOS cloned theme that was last seen around the time CM 7 was still the most popular ROM. To my knowledge the original Chinese forum which was doing the heavy lifting abandoned this quite some time ago. With the exception of the Goophone I don't think anyone is doing full conversion ROMs which resemble iOS anymore and their systems don't seem to have been dumped and translated yet, which by this time indicates there is no interest.

That explains the reason why there's no more ios rom creation. But, what about MIUI? The os of MIUI has dramatically evolved over the past 4 years. Am I tripping, or is it that no one wants to take a crack at creating a rom for us little guys for devices such as the HTC Desire 626s?

Believe it or not rom creation is hard and relies on having the sources available (which not all companies will do--HTC used to be better than most about this which is why I took a chance on this phone) and on having developers who have the phone and are capable\willing to do the hard work of making a complete AOSP or Cyangogenmod version of the base operating system. Only after that has been completed do you usually start to see more exotic systems like MIUI, Mokee, ParanoidAndroid, etc, get ported over. Even then there's a dirty little secret about Android roms:
Most of them never get 100% compatibility and hardware support. Ever. Despite the best efforts of the porters.
I had an HTC One V which did well for its time but the camera never quite made it to 100% hardware support. Same thing with bluetooth. My LG Optimus F3 never quite got anywhere with roms and eventually I gave up on it and moved on to the HTC Desire 626s which despite some solid efforts at producing the slimmed down version I am currently running also does not seem to have any real custom android roms.
This goes back to my first point: Rom creation is hard.
That's why even when people put up bounties and buy phones for well known rom hackers who have produced many ports, it still doesn't always result in new roms. Because it's a lot harder than it looks.
I was spoiled initially, I had an LG Optimus V which quickly had a custom rom built for it with very good hardware support which was lean and clean. There were custom kernels for it and it quickly had all sorts of ports of everything from CM7 to JoyOS to MIUI to Mokee and friends within a relatively short period of time. It was the little phone that could and I mistakenly believed that because lightening struck and all sorts of good things were happening this was how it always was. Not even close to the case.
I got lucky. The LG Optimus V was cheap enough that it attracted all sorts of interest from a variety of the right people at the right time. This kind of thing isn't even close to being normal. Some times you get lucky, sometimes you don't.
So why not MIUI? Well I'm sorry to say but for one thing MIUI is heavy. It's heavy like Touchwiz or Sense can be, and that sort of thing can only be helped with massive amounts of optimization. Sadly not every phone has a developer (or group of developers) who are willing to do that sort of thing for free.
So all I can say is appreciate the level of development we've got and be thankful for the work of the developers who have released a slimmer rom for us already. If you need a MIUI rom for your phone, you should probably track the releases here before buying. If you check the forums, you'll see you are not alone. There are lots of people who want MIUI ports.

Thank you. You have truly answered my questions, even ones I wondered about but didn't ask. I am greatly satisfied with what you have said. I understand that rom creation is hard and it can take a toll on the one creating the rom. It's not an easy task. I to had a Samsung galaxy epic 4g touch, which had all sorts of roms for it. But also knowing from experience, you are correct. It is a hit and miss sometimes with some devices you buy. Maybe as newer devices are created, the ability to create ROMs for them gets harder because of the upgraded technology and coding. I could be wrong. On the miui official site, they is a list of devices that they support. But most of them are old school and i surely wouldn't want to take a step down from this phone just to have miui. Then the newer phones in some cases cost more than this phone(referring to the HTC desire 626). I do appreciate the effort that has been put forth for a slimmed down version for this phone. But what I've asked in previous threads was whether or not there is root access yet for the mm update for the metro PCs version of the HTC desire 626s. No bites what so ever. I'm guessing either there isn't any or I'm just not coming across it yet. Any help on that would be highly appreciated. But all in all, I would really like to say thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I appreciate that. You have brought some clarity to the table. I wouldn't mind help supporting a developer who would be willing to create an miui rom for our device once a cyanogenmod version is acquired.

The custom recovery is posted in this thread and used this> supersu.zip, fastboot flash the recovery and then flash the supersu.zip in recovery. After flashing supersu and booting up install busybox.
BUT don't forget to make a backup, just incase.

Thank you sir for the info. I am unlocked and rooted again. Now, I'll sit back and wait for some debloated roms to pop up for 6.0.1 2.17.1550.1 Metro PCS.
Hey, if you're still interested in Miui, you could try installing the launcher app, see if that gives you enough of the miui experience to get by until someone eventually makes a port?

My bad. Here I found the app in my Play Store history, (from before Google made it country specific?) and installed it. It immediately crashed but stayed open. From there I updated it from within the launcher settings and it crashed again. Just as I was about to give up I had a brainstorm and went back into settings and turned off the lockscreen. This made it stop crashing for me. I hunted around for Beautiful Widgets and replaced the clock and installed miui theme for it and everything looks good from here.
So I installed Titanium Backup and uploaded the app. Hopefully this helps you.
