[Q] Should I buy this device? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy mini and I want to change it. I have like 300€ and I would like to know if this phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8190) is worth buying.
I intend to use it for moderate gaming, listening to music, watching movies and surfing the web.
So, is this phone good? I'd like some opinions.
Thank you in advance!

[Q] Nook Color or Samsung Tab

So my original Nook went to the great gadget drawer in the sky. I was able use my SquareTrade warranty and they sent me a check for replacement. I am now debating between a NC and rooting it for an inexpensive tablet or going for a Samsung Tab. A NC is $249, while I can find a gently used Samsung Tab for around $400.
When the difference between the 2 was $300, the choice was a easier. Now that the difference is closer to $150, it is a bit more difficult. I currently have a MT4G rooted with CM7 RC1, but would like something a bit larger for reading, web access and watching movies. From my research, the NC is a good tablet, but seems it lacks a cohesive experience. The Samsung Tab is a better tablet obviously since it is meant to be a tablet. I am concerned about a Samsung product since they don't have the best record for updates, etc. What say you fellow XDA'ers, a NC or a Samsung Tab? How is the ereading experience on a Samsung tab? Thanks and kudos for everyone's help!
it all depends, if you have a tmobile? you could get a galaxy tab on sprint for 300 and 30/month and have service ware your phone doesnt.( that's alot of places since sprint has a much better coverage area) now, honestly if you dont care abotu the device having it's own connectivity? than go for the NC also keep in mind you get to text and do video calling on your galaxy tab. if all you're doing is reading? you'll be fine with the NC rooted, it has pretty good wifi range and the screen while not QUITE as nice as the galaxy tab, is still nice.
basicly, if you want the camera/connectivity, go with the galaxy tab, they are really nice.
if you dont need those things the NC if fine for you.
Can you watch movies on the NC? What about the Samsung Tab? I was looking to add some of movies that I have ripped.

LOL,
sorry, might be true in some areas, but there is a reason sprint is pretty much unheard of in my area...

you can watch some video formats on a stock rooted NC and more formats on the g tab, but in a month or so youll have many more options for videos and maybe even blue tooth in the NC
T-Mobile has pretty good coverage in my area, thankfully. I have been a T-Mobile customer for many years and love their customer service.
I am really torn on this purchase. I wish I knew how well the Samsung Tab handled ebooks.
I work for sprint, so i have some bias. I play with the tab daily and saw the nook and knew i wanted it. You can get a "overdrive" that does 3G/4G and duct tape it to the nook and you'd be saving money with more options. The tab does brick, but i haven't seen one person on here that says they bricked a nook. It might be that the nook doesn't have the camera, mic and gps to bring up any issues but i don't use those parts so why pay for them. Just a thought from my peanut gallery.

Why are you wanting to sell the NC?
I have a rooted NC running CM7 and love it. Best 250 i've spent in a long time.
I think GT is much better, at least it has 3G, Bluetooth, 4-button and the Amodled mon. It is a trade-off between price and function.
NC is the highest C/P ratio device!
I have both the NC and the Viewsonic G Tablet. I use both. When size is important, I take the NC (7") . When size is not an issue or I need flash, I take the Viewsonic G Tablet (10").
In terms of performance, the Viewsonic G is by far the best. For more info check out the Viewsonic G Tablet forum.

[Q] To get an IPad or not...

I need some opinions on this topic: should I get an IPad or not.
A bit of background about me
- I am an Android user (Galaxy S)
- I do not own any nor have I ever owned an Apple device
- I would never want an Iphone
- I really want a tablet
- I live in South Africa where the ipad 2 is getting released tomorrow
- Except for the Samsung Tab P1000 there are no Android tablets available here yet
- We generally only receive devices 3-6 months after the US, so no Galaxy 10.1 until later this year
- Importing is generally not an option as this would push the price way too high
My options are:
- Buy an Ipad 2 tomorrow, sell it once the droids hit the shelves here
- Wait until June when a friend of mine travels to Europe and brings me back a XOOM for Galaxy 10.1 (if they are released by then...)
My Concerns:
- Apple sucks
- No Jailbreak for Ipad 2 as of yet
- Apple Apps are damn expensive, $9.95 for pages?!?!
- All other restrictions that come with the Ipad (yes, I know them all...)
- Resell value of the ipad 2
- No native divx/avi - COME ON!!!
What I need it for:
- browsing
- videos
- music
- reading books
Despite all this I cannot help feel that I someone want the ipad, maybe its the looks? I just really want a tablet... Now, what would YOU do?
You could get the transformer.
-10 post limit for off-topic!-
If you're wanting to sell it when Droids hit the shelves then I'd say don't buy, It's an awful lot of money to spend on something which you do not particularly want, also if your views are 'Apple Sucks' I wouldn't reccomend it at all Although a good tablet none the less.

I really want a tablet . I agree, it is a lot of money but the iPads seem to have an excellent resell value in this country. Maybe knock of 15% in 4 or 5 months. The supply is so small compared to the demand.

Possibly. Customs can be a real ***** though. Bought my Galaxy S from overseas (I think I was the first to own one locally) but it cost me an arm and a leg.
I would buy the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a heartbeat but who knows about the release date of a 3G version. Xoom is awesome but expensive for the 3G version $$$. Plus, I am not a fan of the looks.
My fears with the iPad 2 are
- no native video playback of divx/avi and I have no nerve to convert videos every time. Not sure if players like Azul work well. VLC has been pulled of the market and since there is no jailbreak as of yet it can't be installed
- No flash
- No tab browsing, not sure if there is a DECENT browser that can sort this out
- Document editing - I refuse to pay $9.95 each for pages and numbers and google docs doesn't seem to be a real solution either
- Just transferring files, I have this feeling that I will throw the thing out the window once I realise that I cannot save an email attachment and open it in different apps (please correct me here!!!)

Got the iPad. I must say, owning a tablet is great and the screen, design and built quality of the iPad 2 is really excellent. The rest, well, it sucks. Its a great device for browsing, reading and news apps but the rest sucks. After a few days with the device I can now appreciate just how far ahead Android is.
Anyway, still was a good decision to buy as I got the experience and they ran out of stock a few days after lauch. Selling it this week, at a 25% profit

So I just got a Galaxy tab. While I love the size of it, I wish it had honeycomb. I got it so my gf can take it to New York so we can video chat while she's gone, then Im probably going to return it. If I was able to play netflix I'd keep, but i dunno. I got it for $150 at Verizon.

Well wait, I'm not 100% about the CDMA version, but I don't see why not, with the proper software tweeks.
You got it for a good price as well... I <3 my tab.
Personally I use it to video chat and surf these forums. Gaming isn't to bad as far as PDA games go, but frankly it isn't anything you couldn't get from say... an HD2... just smaller size.
The main reason I got my Tab as it seemed to be a bigger brother to my HD2.
I enjoy browsing/emailing on the move and saw the tab as more of a middle ground between my phone and laptop.
I use it as a replacement for my (rather bulky in comparison) netbook.
So mostly for researching on the web, RDPing onto my pc and playing music. I like to **** about with streetview and play the ample free games on it when I'm bored.
I bought it to stick it in the face of people I know who bought 64GB iPads just to look cool/rich. Trust me they get jealous right after I take them for a spin on the Tab.
(P.S. I don't stick it in the face of people who bought iPads because they truly want an iPad. only the hipsters)

Nah, I know some pretty cool old people who prefer to use a device which learning curve consists of knowing how to press pretty little square buttons. I respect the choice for ease of use.
The tab (and Android in general) on the other hand, is for people with a passion for knowledge.

Should I buy the S III Mini?

Hi guys,
Asking for your advice, it's new phone time and I have a BlackBerry Curve 9320, the only thing it's got going for it is BBM. I did have a Sony Xperia U but it was slower than even the BlackBerry! I was fond of Android but when it was able to run smooth for short periods on that phone but eventually I couldn't take it anymore and I got a BB. Anyway I had enough of the BlackBerry now as it's had it's fair share of knocks etc. Taking into consideration that BBM is coming to Android and iOS in the coming months and that Android apps can be run on BB OS10 I am in two minds whether to go for a Samsung S3 Mini or a BlackBerry Q5? I like both phones but since the S3 Mini has been around for at least 6 months I am wondering will it be a fast phone with the 1Ghz dual core processer and 1GB of RAM? Any help? What do you guys think of your S3 Mini's?

I would consider the alternatives if I were you.. If you have something like the Galaxy S II or the Galaxy S II Plus at nearly the same price as the S3 Mini, get that. Or wait for the S4 Mini, huge upgrade over the S3 Mini.
Yeah wait for S4 MINI , though quite expensive at nearly £400's.

S4 Mini has Snapdragon processor. So its sources won't be private like ours.
If you ever tried to develop anything you would appreciate time, and hard work that has been put into development. So with all due respect gtfo.

the last time i checked this was a developers forum and not an end users forum
have you actually done any ROM or app development to contribute to these forums?
show some respect to the developers here
clearly you have not done any research into why there is not much development for this phone, otherwise you wouldn't be saying the crap that you are saying
@thejamesrankin
if you had done a search you would have seen some comments on existing threads on what people thought of this phone
it's a great phone if you are happy with stock considering the money that you pay for it
if you want a phone that you can do dev on then i would recommend going for a phone that has a snapdragon processor

I want to ask almost the same question, but I currently have Samsung Galaxy Gio, I want to buy a new mobile phone but with limited money availability, I am considering Galaxy S III Mini, in my country it's around $280, what I want to ask about is:
Is it fast and very stable ?
Can it stand a good number of apps without getting slow ?
Is it really good for it's price ? Or there is better mobile phones with same price ?

Thanks a lot.
Well, I surfed a little in development things since my Gio has a really low internal memory so I searched a lot to get a light ROM for it, but for the S III Mini I won't need a similar thing, will I ?
Coming from LG Optimus Black, I have little to no complaints about S3 mini.
But, I wish I would have bought the LG L7 II over the s3 mini as it's far more cheaper but a little downgrade from s3 mini but overall pretty same specs to me.
I never used all the 1gb ram anyway, 768mb is all I need.
Got the phone 3 days ago guys! LOVE IT! Best phone I have spent money one, it's worth every penny I spent. The build quality comparable only to the Nokia 6300 and Samsung Galaxy Ace I have owned years ago. The screen is lovely, I have never owned a phone with an amoled screen before but I thought they looked pretty when I seen them on other people's phones. Now I can truly appreciate the amoled screen and how it makes blacks look truly black and colours stand out so bright. Obviously for someone who is coming from a Blackberry I think it is a very smooth, fast phone. I have yet to see it lag. I think it eats up the battery a bit too quick though but I think it's my fault and I will do a quick search to see what it brings up in relation to power saving. Now I am on the look out for a theme that resembles the Samsung theme but darker or even pitch black I think it would be cool. Also a way to change the lock sound would be nice to know about?
James.
Very nice device but as from this afternoon I will be an owner of a Samsung I9305 Galaxy S III 16GB mainly due to 4G and my country provider upgrade package.
My son will be very happy to receive the SIII Mini
Thanks to all Devs for their support and ingenuity.

S2 8.0 or ipad Mini?

I've always been an Android guy. One of my sons was also, the other has iphones and ipads. The Android son recently got a used iphone 6 from a friend and is raving about it. So I bought a used iPad Mini 2 to replace my Nexus 7. I like the bigger screen but everything else seems a little foreign. I am getting used to it but it bothers me that I can't see the file structure and where things are stored like I can with Android (both my phone and the Nexus are running MM.) Had been looking at used Tab S models prior to getting the iPad.
I see that the S2 8.0 is on sale everywhere this week for $240-250 so I am tempted to buy one and sell the iPad (since I bought it used I won't lose much, if anything.) I know this is a forum for Android users and lovers but I was wondering if anyone had compared the Tab S2 to an iPad Mini (any version) and if so, why did you prefer the Tab S2? I mainly use it as book reader and internet surfer. I don't play games or watch movies but I do store a lot of pictures.
You sound like you have already decided.. my use is basically the same. The tab s2's amoled screen is great for a book reader, White text on black background is perfect for reading in bed. And the sd card sounds like something you would use also. If youre already invested in Android, I say go for it. It's a great little tablet for what you want to use it for

I have to agree. For consumption, that killer OLED screen is second to none. Its also really nice to hold as its so light. I'm not going to say its as fast as an ipad as it isn't, but for me, flexibility and control is key.

How do you determine which is "faster"? I know my T710 seems MUCH faster than my iPad mini and "all around" it is MUCH more enjoyable. But the problem is, that is all subjective. I have always preferred Android devices to iOS, so it is natural I'd come down on the side of the T710. But I have no idea how anyone could come up with a truly objective way to compare the two. Apples and Androids, er Oranges.
I had an ipad mini 2.. it is good enough for playing some music and youtube nothing els. specially the 16 gb version is just too small storage space for most simple things

I don't play music on it and only occasionally watch a YouTube video. I have the 32GB version so storage won't be a problem.
I have decided for now, not to get an S2. I'm going to stick with the iPad Mini for a while. I've put Gmail, Google Chrome, Photos and Drive on it and most of the Android apps I use regularly have iPad or iPhone versions so it may work out ok. The only thing I haven't figured out how to do is sync the iOS calendar with my Google calendar. If I can do that, I won't miss having an Android tablet.
Update: with help from Google, I learned how to sync my iPad calendar with my Google calendar.

I don't know if its faster or slower TBH. As my One Plus 3 is significantly faster than the S2, I would expect other high end devices like the ipad to be quicker.
I don't mind that Samsung put a pretty old SoC into the S2 as its so light. Others may disagree.

Personally, I take benchmarks with a grain of salt, but for what it's worth, Antutu rates the iPad Mini 3, which I assume is faster than the Mini 2, at 35513 and the 8" S2 at 47080. And if you want a really fast 5.5" phone, the LeEco Pro 3 can be had for as little as $335 and ranks right up there with an iPhone 7 selling in the $1000 range.
