I have done some searching, but have not been able to find a mod to add the AT&T icons back after flashing stock developer ROM. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Ok I'm gonna start by asking can I activate my hero with it running a 2.1 sense rom? If so that would be great, if not could someone point me in the right direction in either getting S-Off withthe 1.47 hboot, or locating the RUU.

as long as your esn is clean u should be fine and any sense ruu will work.
Thanks for the reply, now where are the ruu's located is it sprints site or HTC's? Its been a while.

Not from what I've seen, I'm still trying to get used to this new format (and remember) so maybe it's hidden somewhere I haven't been to.
Not at the moment, but in the next big official firmware update, htc put the remapping option back in. All custom roms have the option enabled already

Not without root. With Root you can use the XPOSED framework to bring back the option HTC originally had to map the Back button as the menu button when held.

Aren't the custom ROMs stock ROMs (as opposed to AOSP ROMs)?

You can still use the stock Rom but you need to unlock the bootloader and be rooted. Then you can install Modaco's Xposed mod to get the remap to work.

The source is the firmware update leaks the custom rom devs get to make their roms. The phone came with either 1.27 or 1.28 but we are all the way in 1.29 in the custom roms (with every small revision in between). In the recent firmware, htc put the button remapping option as default again.

Any idea when the firmware with the fix will be pushed officially? Im used to Nexus devices so I don't know what kind of update mumbo jumbo other manufacturers use.

A month, maybe more, if the HTC One X/S are any guide. The "maybe more" part is going to be influenced by your carrier, the SIM free devices will usually get it weeks before the carrier specific models do. And Rogers ain't known for being particularly fast in approving updates.
If you're rooted, the Xposed method takes about five minutes to set up and works a treat.
I got the official 1.29 update an hour back. Still no option to make the back key act as a menu key.

I have also tried. I couldn't even get it to flash. I think the biggest problems is that we don't have a 4.2.2 base for the first yet. If we did it would be so much easier. I am still tinkering but I have a wife and three kids keeping me busy so I'm not getting very far very fast.
If you don't get an error flashing then you are further than I have been able to get. I would love to get this working but not sure how much help I can be.

Only a suggestion, but have you tried porting from the " HTC Evo 4G LTE " like devs did for the " HTC One XL " they manage to get a booting Sense 5 4.1.2, which is a stronger chance for this phone booting since there are no kernel devs that will patch up your kernel for 4.2.2.

Hey guys just received brand new HTC one out of the box. Just wondering quickest method of root right now and what people are using for their recoveries. Yes I have researched but I see a lot of things out there. I'm sure one of your guys response would be quicker. If you could post links for root and a good recovery that would be appreciated. I'm on 4.2.2 thanks in advance.

I assume you have the international unlocked One, not any of the U.S. carrier branded Ones.
1) Go to htcdev.com, create an account. Choose the option to unlock the bootloader. You need the fastboot drivers. Easy to find
2) Once you're bootloader unlocked, flash TWRP recovery from this link:
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
3) Install SuperSU once u have TWRP(the app will be installed automatically). Run the app
4) You're rooted. Very naize
P.S. I would advise u to S-OFF your phone after rooting it, coz certain ROMs aint compatible with S-ON, ur default. So, before installing the 4.4.2 OTA, flash ARHD 31.6, run the rumrunner tool

Verizon wireless u.s.a and I'm on 4.2.2 and I waited to update to kitkat because I didn't know if there was an exploit for root and stuff like that. Can my bootloader still be unlocked? Keep in mind I'm 100% stock on 4.2.2 I just kind of need to be steered in the right direction on what to do next seeing as though there is an overwhelming amount of mods out for this phone.

Yeah, u need to use rumrunner tool, not the HTC dev unlock.
http://rumrunner.us/downloads-2/
Download for Verizon, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND PRE-REQUISITES CAREFULLY
And, btw, this is not the thread for the Verizon One. Hence, there are no ROMs which support the Verizon variant. Flashing a ROM from the development thread for HTC One WILL BRICK UR PHONE. Make sure u flash ROMs/MODs for the Verizon One from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one
FYI, if u want the most mods/roms, u should have bought the unlocked One
