Hey guys just received brand new HTC one out of the box. Just wondering quickest method of root right now and what people are using for their recoveries. Yes I have researched but I see a lot of things out there. I'm sure one of your guys response would be quicker. If you could post links for root and a good recovery that would be appreciated. I'm on 4.2.2 thanks in advance.

I assume you have the international unlocked One, not any of the U.S. carrier branded Ones.
1) Go to htcdev.com, create an account. Choose the option to unlock the bootloader. You need the fastboot drivers. Easy to find
2) Once you're bootloader unlocked, flash TWRP recovery from this link:
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
3) Install SuperSU once u have TWRP(the app will be installed automatically). Run the app
4) You're rooted. Very naize
P.S. I would advise u to S-OFF your phone after rooting it, coz certain ROMs aint compatible with S-ON, ur default. So, before installing the 4.4.2 OTA, flash ARHD 31.6, run the rumrunner tool

Verizon wireless u.s.a and I'm on 4.2.2 and I waited to update to kitkat because I didn't know if there was an exploit for root and stuff like that. Can my bootloader still be unlocked? Keep in mind I'm 100% stock on 4.2.2 I just kind of need to be steered in the right direction on what to do next seeing as though there is an overwhelming amount of mods out for this phone.

Yeah, u need to use rumrunner tool, not the HTC dev unlock.
http://rumrunner.us/downloads-2/
Download for Verizon, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND PRE-REQUISITES CAREFULLY
And, btw, this is not the thread for the Verizon One. Hence, there are no ROMs which support the Verizon variant. Flashing a ROM from the development thread for HTC One WILL BRICK UR PHONE. Make sure u flash ROMs/MODs for the Verizon One from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one
FYI, if u want the most mods/roms, u should have bought the unlocked One

Unlocking bootloaders and S-Off are different. Unlocking the bootloader just gives you some access to the boot partition, whereas S-Off means you have access to ALL partitions. Unlocking the bootloader is the first step.
With it unlocked, it will say UNLOCKED, and if you lock it back, it will say RE-LOCKED. With proper S-Off, you can downgrade the HBOOT so it will say LOCKED for warranty purposes. S-Off is not yet available for this phone

your reply solved most of mysteries about this subject in my head.now i had a general understanding of what these "terms" mean, just too many of them and causes me a headache...
ok, 1st step, i am doing this!:good::laugh:
Just be careful, check your phone for AL defects before unlocking your bootloader. Warranty is void when you do, unless you can prove whatever defect you send the phone in for is not a result of unlocking, and even then...

You will get the update but not be able to install it if you run a rooted stock rom. You won't be able to flash it unless you unroot and put the stock recovery on. This can be done with a ruu

Read Mikes topic in Android development, I'd recommend reading about it before you touch any of this. Wait for the 4.2.2 update to see if it solves your problem, it should be out soon. If not then I'd say go and root.

Although I enjoy most of what the HTC First has to offer, I think I would like to return it. So, I was wondering if anyone could instruct me on how to flash back to stock and if there was a way, remove the "Tampered" message in the bootloader?

Is there any way you could help me understand why Moonshine isn't working for me? I'm on 1.08, unlocked bootloader, rooted, and I have CWM (not sure if the custom recovery matters). I plug it in with the OEM Cable and USB Debugging on as instructed. However, when I run Moonshine, it goes as far as Test 3 and then it starts running through several rows of dots.
Edit: Scratch that. I figured out that all I needed to do was turn off my Firewall. So, now that I have S-Off, how do I go about flashing it back to the Stock ROM/Recovery?

Since you have s-off I don't know why you want a stock ROM/recovery. Either the v1.08 or v1.04 zips will install with CWM (not TRWP last I tried). http://www.androidruu.com/?developer=Myst

I have success. So far, I'm loving this phone.
I decided to randomly check my phone and noticed although I am "Tampered" & "Unlocked", my phone now says S-On. It use to say S-Off. So my question is, what steps do i take to regain S-Off? My phone runs great with my custom rom. I just dont want to run into any future problems if and when i decide to flash something else. Thank you in advance for any help given.
