Slow to turn on, unlock and startup - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got an unbranded HTC One and I've performed the OTA update from a few weeks ago. I'm not saying the update is the cause, just that I'm on the latest ROM. The phone is also not rooted.
I've noticed that it's getting slower and slower when pressing the On button before the keypad appears and also longer for the keyboard to appear and then it takes longer for the keys I've pressed to register and then another few seconds for the application icons to appear.
All in all, it takes about 15 seconds to turn on, enter my 4 number pin and for the icons to finally appear. Normally this whole process takes me 2 seconds. I know an extra 13 seconds doesn't sound a lot but when you're trying to get to your camera or to take someone's contact details, it feels like forever.
Restarting the phone fixes the issue but it eventually slows back down again. I don't want to have to restart my phone every 3 days so this isn't really a viable solution.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
If not then I can only assume it must be software I've since installed but I'm very careful with what I install (no games, just work related apps like Astrid and things like WhatsApp).

15 seconds!!!??? That's looooonnnnnggggg on anyone's book using any phone!
My One is instantly turned on when the power button is pressed and sometimes the password keypad took a bit longer to appear because I use Swype and it's still a bit laggy compared to stock keyboard, but I am talking about between instant and half a second delay, not even one second.
Yours definitely got some issue, either hardware or software I don't know, likely to be software if you say a restart solves it. What keyboard app you are using? It could be that...

Everything I'm using is stock.
I've just timed it again - it's 15 seconds if I've accessed the phone recently otherwise it's closer to 18 seconds.
It feels a long time to me and when I say it out loud "18 seconds" it sounds pretty insignificant but I assure you, it's very, very irritating.
How many weeks uptime do you have on your phone?

I've removed almost all my apps now so we'll see if it starts slowing down again.

Unlock the bootloader, root the phone, and install a custom rom. That's what you should be on XDA for anyways. You're problems will then be gone.

I know that. I was just wondering why not htcdev.com? It's so simple and there's nothing wrong with using it.

This is the reason.
I've heard people have had issues with non-firmware related warranty claims after rooting on HTCdev.

Go read Gunny's response on losing your warranty. The warranty loss claim is complete bs. It states you MAY lose your warranty. I've returned so many phones for warranty that were rooted, bootloader unlocked, and even bricked with a different devices software on it and I never had any problems.

Fair enough but people dont need to have to root and unlock bootloaders and do this and that to get a good experience. People just want to get a phone out of the box and use it. and HTC have done a good job at that. And there are too many noobs that just dig themselves a big hole after doing down the unlock path
back on topic: its probably an app thats causing huge lag on your device. check your running apps in settings

[Q] Incredible S Keeps Freezing..... :(

Had my Incredible S for two weeks and two days now.....but within the first week it started freezing....what i mean by this is that.....I can unlock the phone but cannot launch any apps or anything as screen does not acknowledge any screen pressses.....if it does it will only do the bottom row of htcs launcher...eg phone apps and widgets, but no shortcuts that have been put on home screens.....i have had this problem happen over 6 times now....its starting to get annoying.....anyone else experience this....
Can't say I've had anything like that, and neither has my missus, and we've been running both devices for around a fortnight

Thanks for reply...looks like I owe carphone warehouse a trip......
To be honest I had had to take mine back because of a faulty SD card slot, they swapped it over there and then and I was out inside 15 minutes with a new phone, fantastic service
I can confirm this, but my non-responsiveness comes from overloading the memory (rooting process), but is solved after a reboot. Otherwise I don't have this problem.
I would suggest go back to where u bought it because this is not a good thing!
Complete lockup happened to me once and had to reboot. Two other times I had no response from the screen until I pressed home, then everything jumped into life. 3 times in 3 weeks, I can live with, but slightly worrying.
Well since its fixed after a reboot, I suppose its a Rom issue, but will never know for sure.
Maybe some faulty apps that start this problem, but have not tested that. Will figure some of the things when root is achieved.
Otherwise HTC have to fix it.
Hmmm...i got a replacement but only after a massive fight with carphonewarehouse.....the worst part is as soon as i got home after about 5 hours of having the phone...it started to lock up again.....this time stayed locked untill i restarted....so now i have a brand new incredible s with same problem....i filmed it though as proof for my case against CPW......but definitely not a good sign
Any chance you could try a different launcher (ADW, LauncherPro etc.)? It might just be an issue with HTC Sense...

Yeah i probably will just try that....see if it works....(i normally uses adw ex anyway but just thought while the phone isnt rooted...i would leave it all stock....)
Keep us updated on this if you can, as it seems random reboots and freezes are becoming an issue rather than isolated incidents...
is this means there is something wrong with the hardware?
Had the same problem just now. Widgets didnt respond etc. Had the same problem after a reboot, but a backup restore in Launcherpro fixed it for me
Had my first crash
But I think one of the newly installed app is acting up... did the factory reset and see how it goes
It's probably a software issue, since if its the hardware it would give different symptoms and should happen all the time and not at random
Any of you with problems using Tasker? Got the same prog yet again. Disabling Tasker did the trick for me this time
Yeah i've just removed tasked seems to have helped

In the end I did a factory reset the problem went away for a bit. But now its back.
Think I'll need to pay carphone warehouse a visit

I have had quite some problems with mine. It doesn't freeze, however it has crashed/shut down about 8 times in the first 2 weeks, the las week has been problem free. I have to manually start the phone again and when the phone finally is done booting up a message pops up on the screen says something like "Your phone has recovered from a serious crash" and asks me if I would like to send a report to HTC.
I noticed mine only became unusable when plugged into mains charger. As soon as I unplug it works great again. Not sure if this is down to the dodgy charger from China or something else. I lost the one I got with it. :S

Odd Touchscreen issues

Hey,
I have Verizon droid 3 running up in Canada, and its been working fine...however it recently started having issues with the touchscreen.
Basically the screen works normally 3% now, otherwise it only works when the keyboard is open to just above the first row of keys.
If I touch the screen while the keyboard is fully open it wont respond, but when I go back to the working position it will respond to a touch made while fully open (ie; I pressed ok after typing, it didn't submit until I closed the keyboard to the working position, like a delayed response).
It seems like a software issue, but I already hard reset.....
Any ideas? I don't want to change this phone after only 5 months (no Verizon warranty here!)..
Thanks,

Which ROM are you on, stock or a custom one?
Its a long shot, but I have odd touchscreen issues when plugged into cheap power sources (inverters, etc). You may want to check the battery - pop it out for a bit, put it back in, maybe try someone else's, etc...

Oh ok, then I'm not really sure. I would, if you want, try and flash right back to complete stock and see if your having the same troubles. If you are then it's almost guaranteed to be a hardware problem. However, if the problem doesn't persist then it could have just been some weird bug or glitch that happened. I've had some weird things happen a week or so after a flash and it was software related.
But all this would be having you do a reflash either through CWM/Safestrap or sbf and then you lose everything you have (Though you can backup & restore apps via Titanium Backup). So if you don't end up reflashing I understand
Also does this happen only at certain times/intervals say when your charging? Hope this helps!
Edit: I looked at the orig post at work and forgot to look at it again. A hard reset should be able to fix it, but you never know. I would recommend a reflash and see what happens. Sorry I can't be more help
I hate you. I read your post yesterday and thought "huh, that's really weird and unfortunate." I woke up today and the same thing is happening to me. I haven't flashed anything since April. It was totally out of the blue.
Mine only works when the screen is slid open bout half a centimeter, not even enough to force the screen to rotate.

That's exactly what's happening....It's been like this for a week. However, it sometimes works when I left it for the night to charge...or randomly, but full functionality lasts only a few minutes.

[Q] Lock Screen Password Enabled Even After Factory Reset

hey everyone!
my phone went a little crazy by randomly shutting off while using cm10 so I decided to restore to a stock non-root nandroid I made around 8 months ago. Everything went well up until the point I rebooted: I unwittingly had set up a text lockscreen password that I had since then forgotten (who remembers passwords from 8 months ago?!). So I went in CWM, did a factory data reset and rebooted. I turned off the screen and turned it back on to BAM! the lockscreen again... And the fracked up thing is that there isnt even a "forgot password" gmail confirmation option thing at the bottom so I'm completely locked out of my phone! Is there anything I can do other than buy that $4 screen lock bypass exploitation app??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe try another factory reset (sucks I know) and this time after boot go into security settings and turn off the screen lock before your screen turns off. If you just try and change the password you'll be prompted for the old one first. That being said, I haven't used stock in so long I can't promise this will work either.
Those random reboots you got with CM10 were common with older versions and the other variants such as Pacman, Slimbean, etc, but the latest one I haven't had that happen and I've been using it a week. I only say this because stock is just makes this phone crawl IMO.

Haha, thanks, not an absolute fix but at least it works. Kinda strange since I read that CWM factory resets wipes out everything including lockscreen passes... And my phone wasn't rebooting, it would just shut off randomly, battery would drain at horrifying speeds (from 99% to 0 after a 7 minute phone call) (I also had the latest ver). I was thinking that I could maybe restore stock rom and send it back to samsung or provider since its still under warranty
EDIT: I'm gonna try Samsung Remote Screen Unlock and see if that works. Plus I just checked my battery: It's as swollen as Rosie O'donnell at Mandarin, which explains the crappy battery life.

Yes the easiest way to get rid of cwm is to flash the stock file. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Exhibit_4G there are, i believe two methods, one using Odin the other flashing something in recovery. Just read. As for cm10.1 camcory is working on it so is smartguy. Even i compiled it but it doesn't boot all the way. Check insomniaforums.org that is probably where it will be posted

phone vibrates even when switched off! - please help

ok so i got my htc one a couple of days ago and it sees to have a serious problem!
Basically the phone goes through stages of random vibrating every few mins to full on constant vibrating like there is a fan or motor buzzing in there. It even does it if the phone is switched off! Ive just had an episode of it vibrating no stop for 10 mins, didnt make a difference when i switched it off or when i factory reset it!
It seems to overheat or something and only stopped doing it after i had just left it for a while. I have tried to speak with htc about it but they were useless and had no suggestions what soever.
I really need some help here, i bought the phone privately and to all intense purposes it seemed like brand new

No cant exchange it, only option i might have if i cant get the problem ressolved on here would be to send it to htc for repair but can take up to 2 weeks.
when i got the phone it was still on 4.1 and told me update available to 4.2 so i did that. Thats all i have done , apart from unlocking it from 02 using a code.
its almost like on a computer when its being worked hard etc that you here the fan cut in, thats what it seems like except it sounds like the buzz you get when you first start the phone. sometimes it does this just once every few mins or so, other times it will start doing it and not stop...even when switched off.....everything else on the phone seems to work fine

Did the device get wet at some point? Sounds like a hardware problem if a factory reset didn't solve the problem.
There's a slight chance it could be a real bad app or an issue with the rom. Maybe running a stock RUU for your device if you can find it might help.
Pretty sure it hasent got wet .
Would be happy to put stock Rom back on it but not sure how I go about reflashing it .
Don't know if this normal or not but when I did a factory reset I thought the device would be wiped completely, all my pictures and videos etc however when I set it back up again I found some videos on there still that I had downloaded to the phone off the net.
Maybe it's not wiping itself correctly either?

Resetting the device should wipe everything and bring it to the same condition as new.
Go to settings>>Backup & Reset>>Reset phone>>now check "Erase all data", then tap "OK".
If that doesn't work, try to do a factory reset from the bootloader.

Factory reset will wipe the device but leave the contents of the sdcard untouched which explains why your vids are still there
Appreciate the help guys, thankyou
So, is there any benifit to wiping the device completely over and above what I've done allready?
Today the phone has just done the odd sudden vibration as if you were just booting up, around 5 times in total, nowhere near as bad as last night, don't know why that would be.
Would it be possible to reflash standard firmware?
Is so how would I do it. Phone is completley standard and was in 4.1 prior to the ota update to 4.2, could 4.2 be the problem?

I'd try it. You can back up your pics and music on your PC via HTC Sync first.
Ok so I have tried it but no joy
Still getting the random buzzing/vibration for no apparent reason.
Could it be a bug with the update to 4.2.2?
Can I go back to 4.1?
I'm at my witts end with this now

Don't think it's a bug with 4.2.2 but a hardware issue.
Couple of other things to try ; download "CID Getter" from the play store, run it and find out your device's CID number. Now search on Google or xda for the RUU for your device's CID number. Download the RUU.exe to your pc, connect your phone to the pc and run the RUU.exe. This will bring the phone back to stock 4.1..
Or you can unlock the bootloader and flash another rom. Step by step instructions can be found on xda
Sorry, don't know of any easy solutions.

thanks for sticking with me on this :good:
I have just followed a a video on here on how to unlock the bootloader and s-off and root - so now good to go
not sure how i put a new firmware on here now though..going to have to do a bit more reading....
i think to start with ill try downloading standard htc 4.1 rom when i can figure out which one it is and how i put it on and then go from there.
ok so just to update this....
last night i have tried the standard google edition rom on my phone and for the first few hours all seemed fine untill 4am this morning when i was woked by the phone doing its random vibrating thing...it was just sat by the side of my bed on charge
Can only think it must be a hardware issue now...but still dont know what or what is triggering it

You tried everything so it's has to be a hardware issue. Maybe the vibration starts when the device gets warm. Sorry we couldn't fix it.

My HTC one has been doing the same thing. Vibrating randomly even when powered down. Brought it back to Sprint and had them order me a new phone. The only way to stop it from vibrating when powered down was to bang it on a hard surface, then it would stop. Crazy!
Vibrating non stop
My HTC One had been vibrating cotinuously too. I kept slapping the upper part of the phone to stop it from vibrating. However, this worked for the initial few days only. Later, it continued to vibrate continuously without stopping at all ! In the night I left the phone in the other room while it was still vibrating and the next morning the phone wouldn't charge at all! Now the phone is not booting/ charging. It is dead! Any leads?
EDIT: I slapped the upper part again, it suddenly woke up from the dead! It is charging now, the LED is red too!! But it is still continuously vibrating. I have left it to charge as of now, but please help with this vibrating problem. Any ideas?
I've had the same issue with my M7 today.
There were no software updates or any new apps lately.
It all emerged when i was pressing the home button (to exit from some app) and at the same time an incomming call started.
I have tried:
switching it off - did not help
Changing volume setting silent\vibe\sound a couple of times - no effect
Soft reset - no help
Hard reset - no help
Slapping with upper side of the phone against my had - helped for some time, the it started again
Seems like hardware issue.
Currently working solution for me:
Switch off the option "Vibrate on keypress" in Settings ==> Sound & notification
UPD: had to turn off all the vibrations
So far so good. Apparently there is some issue with vibe motor, and it just does not stop. I assume that by disabling that option it is not getting started and thus no constant vibe follows.
UPD 2 Fixed:
Issue reoccurred on hitting the device against my palm.
Had to disassemble it, there are a couple of instructions on youtube, i used plastic cards.
Motor was spinning even with a switched off device. Had to unplug and plug the motor a couple of times and it helped.
Turned on all vibrations in settings, no issues so far.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Newbie boot loop problem?

Hi everyone, I'm sure this question has been answered before but being a complete noob, I honestly don't understand ANY of the technical terms such as "rooting", "flashing", "ROMS", etc etc. So most of the answers I have read make zero sense to me.
My phone started bootlooping when it was in my bag and I have no idea why it started doing so. The battery ended up draining enough to get it out of the bootloop and it was working fine for a day or so, until I put it back in my bag to go out and when I took it out, it was bootlooping again.
What I am trying to ask is what might be the cause of this and is there anyone who can explain how to fix this issue (in simple terms) so that I'd understand?
Cheers.
mine is doing same!

Well I don't know what rooting or mods are, so I doubt it is anything like that. The only things I've really done with my phone are install apps from the play store, torrent music using utorrent and save images/pictures. I thought that maybe it was due to my phone overheating in my bag as it has been rather hot the past few days. Could that be a possible reason?
Just do a factory reset

Well the thing is, I can't do a factory reset because whenever I try to access that menu that has all the options, it starts looping before I can choose anything, and for some reason the buttons dont always work

since it seems you haven't done anything to your phone (ie unlocking, custom ROMs, etc), this could likely be a hardware problem.
how's the power button working? damaged?
you can also do a factory reset in bootloader, power off your phone, then hold VOLDOWN, press POWER, keep holding VOLDOWN until the bootloader appears (the white screen, with a few options), you use VOLUP and VOLDOWN to move the "cursor" and POWER to select the option you want.

cant do that because as lostpigeon said it loops again before we get a chance to select anything! mine has been doing it out of the blue since this morning , cant turn off or anything . . .loops and loops over and over every 13 seconds.

if it's rebooting in bootloader, then it's very likely the power button that's the problem, for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563572
what can you do to fix the power button? tried drying the phone although it hasnt got wet.

off to warranty...
hardware problems are very hard to fix; and i'm not saying it's the power button for sure, it's just highly likely it is, if it's rebooting bootloader.
asi have no orange insurance what would you do next?

How long have you had the phone, defects like that should be automatically covered regardless.

The problem with my phone is that I found it. Turned it in and no one claimed it for a substantial amount of time so I gained ownership of it. I don't have the warranty or anything that came with the phone except for the phone itself and the charger. If I took it to a phone repair shop would they possibly be able to fix it? Or am I screwed...
Okay so I let my phone run out of battery over night and just plugged it in to charge then and it's seemed to have gotten out of the bootloop and it working normally now, so would this still possibly be a hardware issue? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from bootlooping again?
i phoned up orange and they said to ring htc as ive only had the phone for 5 months . will ring them 2moro. pain in the ass.

Im not sure this is hardware related, there are a few things you can try though to prevent this from happening again. first off, if you ever do encounter another bootloop... pressing and holding in the power button for around 20 seconds or so forces a reboot, the capacitive button on the bottom will start to blink. Second would be to boot into thee bootloader by powering down the phone, holding the volume down button and powering back on while holding voldown. this will bring you to a menu described above eariler, then do a factory reset.
