Sup guys,
I´m in the lookout for an HTC One and I found one with a bad ESN. Now, the curious part is that I don´t plan on using it on Sprint. I´ve read that bad ESN are only carrier related and if I were to use the phone on at&t, besides the Sim Unlock I´d need to do, Will it work even with a bad ESN?

It wouldn't work on AT&T regardless of ESN. The radios are different. Sprint phones can only be used on Sprint or other Sprint-using carriers (like Ting). Verizon on Verizon, and even AT&T/T-mobile aren't always fully compatible with eachother (sometimes lose 4G/LTE).
I see, I guess I should forget about Sprint´s One

Well I'm sure there's a way to flash it to say boost or something like that that's if you know how to or someone that can. Heck some small carrier stores even offer flashing services haha

You mean I can unlock it by flashing some custom rom? I´ve done that with many devices previously, but i never knew you could unlock it by flashing a custom rom, am I wrong?

As of right now it is not possible to SIM unlock the Sprint ONE. You can unlock the bootloader, flash to other carriers, and even flash a different PRL and force Roam on Verizon, but you cannot unlock the SIM for GSM use.
Please Update
As of now the GSM of Sprint HTC One can be unlocked using the technique from other threads.... Please tell me if i can now buy a BAD ESN Phone from ebay..... Get the GSM Unlocked using those techniques and use it in India... The radios or freq wont be a problem as India is yet to get a 4G network(Oh God we are so behind).
Need advise before purchasing
It can be unlocked for use on other carriers pretty easily. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45243199. Bad ESN applies only to US carriers

Hey just a FYI the HTC One cannot go on ting
From ting website:
Our program is as follows: Bring your used, inactive Sprint® device to Ting, and activate it with a Ting service plan*.
Newer smartphones like the S4 and the HTC One cannot be brought over. Likewise, BlackBerry and Push-to-Talk (PTT) devices cannot make the move.

You wont have any problems if you put it on something other than sprint (Providing it has a bad ESN on sprint), However the sim unlock guide provided here does not work with the new rom base.
Keep in mind though that sprint will randomly go through and (Scrub) A.K.A clear the bad esn's out of there system, So even though you purchased with a bad esn it could have a clean one after all.
If you have verizon in that area you could always check about flashing the HTC One to PagePlus. Full Guide Here
Now that i broke my HTC OX i will go on ebay and buy HTC O with bad esn

i'm going to be in the US for the summer and am strongly considering buying a HTC One.
first thing i will do is root it.
problems..
when i come back to europe am i going to be able to use the phone normaly even if it is the sprint or at&t version?
mainly what i want to know is if the sprint version for example is locked on sprint just by software or also by hardware..
if i buy a clean/bad ESN one will that be in conflict with the carriers in europe?
Is this for the HTC One or HTC One X? I'll assume you're asking for the HTC One, so I'll move this to the correct forum. PM or mention me here if I got it wrong
all you have to do is sim unlock the phones. the sprint models should have an extra sim card slot ontop of the CDMA chip they have so it should be ok as well. as for a bad ESN i'm not sure if tmobile or ATT report bad sims internationally so maybe....

Unlocking the phone for use with GSM Sim without Sprint service is not possible as Moto only releases the codes to the specific carrier and Sprint will not give it to you.
If you do get it unlocked, it will not work in the US on a GSM network ie: T-Mobile or ATT. They're hardware restricted from working on local GSM networks p/fca allowances. I have seen a few devices like some black Berry's work locally after being unlocked but they are few and far between.

any other ideas

There is no way to use a CDMA phone on a gsm network no way at all and to flash a at&t ROM on a phone that is not at&t will cause a brick and will be a pain in the ass to fix my best advice is to sell your phone and by a at&t phone so you can use in h2o because there is no way to do what you are trying to do

Actually this phone has a SIM card capable of running on At&t if unlocked. If u want to use gsm only I think u can go to mobile network and set it to gsm/umts only. As far as flashing another devices Rom/Ruu your just asking for a brick since the mounts are completely different causing a brick

sorry i wasn't trying to be rude im just very frustrated in trying to get this to work lol
I did the following:
SuperCID to 111111
S-OFF using Revone
HTC One Simunlock from viperboy and set it to WCDMA preferred
I did upgrade to 4.2.2 but in order to use the GSM part of the phone you have to use the the oldest radio I can't remember 1.29 something
Down part:
GSM signal keeps disconnecting
Will have voice and text but no data
Everytime the phone reboots you have to keep resetting the APN
Have to keep searching for the Network
I have flashed a T-mobile RUU and a AT&T RUU and the only options they get greyed out are the options to choose what network you would like. Word of advice if the antenna is originally CDMA leave it with CDMA because it really does have some really bad issues with connecting to GSM towers. I was using MetroPCS which uses T-mobile towers but I just flashed my phone to metro and I have a solid signal all day long with no drops I just did not have MMS.
I hope that helps

I think the only thing that a Bad ESN will prevent is use on Sprint. As far as SIM unlocking, and GPe ROMs, I don't know much about the process.

The phone can be used on gsm you just have to SIM unlock. As far as effectiveness of using gsm will depend on the carrier and which frequencies it uses. Converting is impossible because the official GPE is only gsm and has different partitions. You can however use a GPE Rom

I am actually using a bad ESN sprint M7 and I live in the Caribbean on a gsm network(digicel) No issues so far. I have 4g data speed.
My bootloader is unlocked with H-Boot 1.56, I'm S-off, rooted and TWRP recovery. I'm on the 6th rom I've flashed (Tried CM 11 Nightly, CM 10 Snapshot, Stock Deodexed rooted 4.1.2, 4.4.2, MIUI, Viper Rom) and I've been working on this device for about 48 hours non-stop. I am NEED of assistance if ANYONE can offer it,
Is your device also locked to another account on Sprint with the bad ESN? I've got a Sprint HTC one I've performed the Sim Unlock attempting to use my T-Mobile sim, but it will only allow Emergency Calls. No text, no voice and no data. I've gone into the *#*#4636#*#* service menu and changed the settings to WCDMA, but NO dice. Searched for service and nothing appears, just a blank screen! I've even attempted to change RUIM settings in DFSCDMA Tool. I have changed the radio around about 5 different times with NO fix. I have searched high and low on these forums and haven't found anyone that can help me.
Sorry for my bad English.
Does anybody know how to convert a Sprint One to an internation Htc One? My phone has already been s-off and supercid.
Thanks everyone.

Sadly, no. It's not possible since Sprint is CDMA.
You can unlock the SIM card slot which will let you use SIMs from international carriers. See the thread in the main Sprint HTC One forum.

Go to default.xml, and find sku_id (which is somewhere near the bottom) change the value 10 to 42, and you should be getting H/3G icons again.

Ive been through hell with this, this past week.
Sprint m7
You would think once you root, rom, s-off, cid unlock, sim unlock and bake a cherry pi for it the damn thing would work with ATT compatible sim cards.
NOPE. well, sure, you can SOMETIMES trick it to get onto the network, but it doesnt stick, its not fast, and theres no data.
WHAT A PAIN.
I want to sell this now, but Im not even confident it will work on international GSM networks, even though the sim is unlocked (and cid unlocked!)
i dont think ill ever buy a non-international phone again. Well, my one X+ att flavor worked out ok, but there are so few roms for it... oh well...

i wont be home until tomorrow, but i will be trying the fix in that link. i really hope it works.... i made a crystal clear call yesterday before i lost the network, so i KNOW this phone can talk to the towers near me on H2O plan... i just have to get the stupid software right.
OK, so I am done.
Recap (without getting boring)
I did the sim unlock, and also the "fix". FINALLY got the phone to register on H20. And I do have data too, but its GSM only (very slow). The only way I got any of this to work is be fully 4.1.2 stock.
It is set to WCDMA preferred.
also, even though I did the "fix" it still loses the network after a reboot.
I am so done with this phone. I am updating it fully and throwing it on ebay. F this thing! No more sprint phones for me, thank you.
