[Q] Changing data speed types - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a Nokia Lumia 521 to play with and it's been alright.
How can I change my data speed from HSPA+ to Edge (2G)?

Settings -> Mobile Network -> Highest Connection Speed (it's a dropdown with "LTE", "4G", and "2G" on my phone).

[internet settings] hsdpa / 3g only

Could'nt find it with search, so here is my problem:
- i get free 20mb 3g-traffic each month free
- my phone connects not only with umts but also with GSM/GRPS
how do you disable the use of gsm for a data connection?
thx for an answer
*bump*
nobody got a clue?
You seem to be able to set it to UMTS only - I've just tried it.
Obviously if you lose the 3G / HSDPA signal, you won't get any calls / texts coming through as it won't automatically switch to GPRS.
Menu >> Settings >> Personal tab >> Phone >> Band tab >> Select your GSM / UMTS band (choose one that is your UMTS band only, not UMTS & GSM).
SV
hm...
that should suffice as a temporary solution. i do not want to get calls with my 3g-only rate anyway. even if i think that it's quite complicated to switch between my sim cards with all the extra settings.
so: thanks!!
ok i tried to do that but it didn't work
i only have 2 options:
UMTS(900+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(850+1900)+GMS(850+1900)
GSM(900+1800) is common in germany. dunno the umts band :-/

[Q] GMS/UMTS mode

Hey guys,
I was wondering what the difference between GSM and UMTS is, according to the settings of the LG Optimus 2X I can select GMS or UMTS or both.
Couldn't find the answer anywhere so I'm asking it here.
How do you guys have the settings set?
Using T-mobile btw (Netherlands).
Thanks in advantage
Hi,
I think gsm mode is called as 2G, umts as 3/3.5G ... 2G mode is save your battery but the data traffic will be slower. You can switch between them in settings/wireless settings/mobile networks/ and check or uncheck the only 2G network (or something similar, I've tried to translate the menu names from Hungarian). However, you can find a simple app in the Market to do it easier:
2G-3G OnOff (CurveFish)
Yes, 2G mode saves battery and offers slower download speeds. You can reach decent speed with EDGE @ 20-25-30 k/s. So If you don't need the speed of 3G, you can set the phone to GSM only mode.
On the other hand with 3.5G you can reach very good speeds (800k/s here in Bulgaria), but it drains the battery faster, even there are no active transfers.
So basically what you are both telling me is, just put the phone on GSM/UMTS (automode). Because I often use 3G/HSDPA.
Definitely!

[Q] I9305 - Three UK (3) Ultrafast Edition Network Mode?

Hi does anyone know how to set the Phone to GSM Only on this phone?
The reason why I ask this is when I will roam abroad I don't want my S3 LTE to use the 3G networks.
However 3 UK being a 3G only network have disabled the GSM only option and only have: GSM/WCDMA (Auto) or WCDMA only.
Is there a special code or hack that I can use with this particular model?
Thanks.
You may have to use another ROM; in my i9305 ROM (locked to T-Mobile, bought SIM-free) I have the choice of "3G only" or "2G/3G/4G" as baseband selections. I can't explicitly choose '2G only'. There may be a third party app which you could grab to force baseband if you're happy to root your device, afraid I've not even looked yet (only had the phone a couple of weeks).
Hey! Try this code *#197328640# UMTS -> DEBUG SCREEN -> PHONE CONTROL -> NETWORK CONTROL -> BAND SELECTION -> GSM Band Preference -> GSM ALL
Hi guys, this lte stuff is fair confusing for me. Can't seem to find answers to the questions below. Would be grateful if you could advise.
The phone in question is an LTE enabled GS3, PAYG so it's unlocked and unbranded.
I want to know if I can use my current standard 3UK micro sim in an lte enabled GS3?
I don't expect to get superfast speeds but will the phone work just like a regular GS3 while using this sim?
Will I get superfast data on the lte enabled GS3 when 3UK eventually update the network?
***SOLVED***

[Q] 2g only option?

3g internet is a much bigger drain on the battery than 2g, so it really annoys me that there isn't an option for this. I only see 4g preferred/3g/2g, 3g only, 3g preferred/2g.
Is there an option for this or even a third party app I can use to force 2g?
Settings > More... > Mobile networks > Network Mode > Choose GSM only

I need access to change my mobile network mode to "LTE/WCDMA/GSM" in cyanogenmod 12.1.
It currently will only allow me to select one. I can use the access menu to select what I want but when I return to the network mode selection in the main setting UI it moves to one of these options.
LTE
3G
2G
