I've noticed a difference between the camera quality in stock rom and aosp/aokp and i was wondering if there was any way to improve the aosp camera quality, i love aosp roms but im not willing to sacrifice the quality of the camera as that was one of the main reasons i brought the phone, with other things.

Hi all,
I've got a problem:
When im taking photos with my rooted incredible s runnning aosp rom (CM7, MIUI all versions, icsbeta) the quality is very bad and the focus is very laggy, there is also alot of overexposure. Theres also alot grain in darker pictures.
When im installing sense based roms (tried 3) then the quality and focus/exposure is good again.
for some pictures you can pm me and you will get them asop, cant post pictures yet.

This is a issue on all aosp roms because they don't have HTC camera drivers. However there is a aosp ics rom called virtuous quattro 4.0.3 that doesn't have camera lag however its not fully working.
God damn it I love this question.
Thats really the biggest weak point of aosp.
The roms are just great!, i like miui alot!
But the downside is the cam,
I've not seen this question somewere else, is it that only the ins suffers the most?
Other cam apps wont bother.
I just want best of both worlds together.
The cam of htc rulezz and interface and possibilities of miui rulezz.
(With MIUI i get 3200quadrant
and 3750 antutu oc stable on 1.5)
All HTC phones run crap camera rez without sense
My CM7 seems decent quality with no lag?

Say I want to run cyanogenmod in the future, will the ultrapixel make it so the camera won't work at all because HTC won't release the coding for it?

It's just a fancy name for a larger 4mp sensor. Ultrapixel is just marketing so people don't say oh that only has a 4mp camera it must suck and instead say ooo ultrapixel must me amazing
It won't make a difference to CM. They will find a way to make the camera work just like they always do, the only difference being the MP size, we have tons of phones with a wide range of MP sizes and there isn't an issue. I wouldn't expect too much of a worry.
Could HTC's noise reduction algorithm throw a wrench in this? As in, might we see noisier pics on cm?

Well my concern was that my EVO 3D never had ROMs with 3D camera because there wasn't any source released for that, so I was thinking that they wouldn't release source for their Ultrapixel chip. But I think regardless pictures are going to look better on stock. It was that way when I had an the 3D (with normal pictures of course). It's even better stock on my Epic 4G.
I wonder if the optical image stabilization is controlled automatically by the camera chip or if it's through Sense, and thus not likely to work on AOSP (like 3D was). I suspect that if OIS is a selectable option in the Sense camera app, we're probably not going to see it on AOSP. If it's always on though, we're probably good.
I don't think it will be any bigger of an issue than it already is with most (HTC) Phones out there running CM. If you are looking to install CM, inferior camera quality is a trade off you will have to accept.
With Sense 5, however, I think a lot of hardcore CM goers will not be so quick to jump ship, but that's just my thoughts.
Apparently OIS is always on and probably outside of the control of the ROM, so it should still work in AOSP roms.
I agree with you about Sense 5, I'm definitely planning on keeping it so long as it can keep up with android updates (thanks devs).

I also believe this will be the case
I know, there are always problems with the cam in 4.4.2 - unfortunely.
But meanwhile I need a full working cam, so which custom-roms are highly recommend?
Thanx in advance.
PS: I'm well aware that I have to install a version lower than 4.4.2
I have 6 different cameras that work great on rooted 4.4.2 but it is still locked AT&T I-537 so not a complete custom ROM
Including: Stock Android camera, S4 GPe camera, Cymera, Focal and Google Camera. All are free. What doesn't work on yours?
Often the pictures are very overexposed. I can see it in the cam-modus. If I restart the camapp, it is normal exposed.

Would be glad to hear answer to this. Or is it just that every custom ROM (4.4.2) has this problem?
I'm really waiting forward to have KitKat in my S4 Active (nordic countries), as now I can't use for example Polar's sport applications with my official 4.2.*
You can't expect too much from this camera. It will do decent pics, but not more. Which is just fine by my standards.
Stock 4.2.2 camera works best overall, both with photos and videos. For other ROMs (4.3 and 4.4), photos are ok, but the video side has always been poor, regardless of the app or ROM used. Especially the sound volume, which is way too low, really frustrating.
Maybe things will improve with official 4.4.2 and hopefully ROM developers will manage to catch up with Touchwiz when it comes to the camera.
It shouldn't be long now.

I'm now testing unofficial CM11 for SGS4A. I agree - doing decent pics would be just fine, IF camera wouldn't freeze after changing the settings Well, waiting...

I use @spegelius's CM11 build from 03.05 and it's all I need. The only freeze/crash events occur when trying to shoot the first pic after switching to and from HDR. After that it works smooth, although HDR is not really important to me. The other thing is the first film you try to record when switching from 1080p to 720p, which comes out unviewable. I couldn't find any other flaw with the rest of the functions.
The 03.05 is the build you need, if you don't use it already.

I have a pretty simple question . How does camera performance differ from the normal touchwiz ROM apposed to an aosp ROM. I know there is some processing that is done on the os side when pictures are taken.
So basically is the camera worse on a aosp ROM compared to a touchwiz ROM

As far quality, no but certain features like filters, camera modes, etc that's tied into samsung stock camera aren't present in AOSP.

I've tested the camera on both FireKat (TouchWiz) and CM12 Remix ROMs and I can say I was pleased with both, BUT. CM12 does not really support other features, like in-camera filters and photo mods (animated picture, sound photo etc). What I also noticed, now, please correct me if I'm wrong, but CM12 does not support other camera apps other than Google Camera and the AOSP stock Camera (which are almost the same thing). Could have been a troubly version of the rom, but I could not get the FV-5 to work, nor the camera inside Facebook Messenger (for sending photos really quick).
Otherwise, the photos look pretty much the same if made with the default filter, but you can always use apps to edit them, I got like 6 of them. I can recommend Google Snapseed, it's free and powerful. Njoy!
Oh, yeah, you also lose the voice control for the camera (the "Shoot!" or "Cheese!" voice triggering). But, damn, man, CM12 is snappy as hell..
On one TW ROM the camera wasn't as good as stock. Not sure what the deal was. I'm using the app called better camera on the CMRemix ROM. It has the features like the stock camera. As far as quality it seems just as good.
Just wondering what everyone's opinions are on what camera is better:
Stock Sony Camera, or the Cyanogenmod 12.1 Camera.
Thinking of switching back to cyanogen but would still like a good camera to use.
Dude, stock camera beats the cyanogen's cam because cyanogen doesn't have the implementation yet, resulting in a fish eye effect. Also stock has the slow-mo recording. But if you think of the battery life, customization and ownage of your phone, then I suggest give cyanogen a try. I sticked with stock rom for a long while but then I started using cyanogen, no regrets, even with the fish eye camera! You can pm me if you got other questions. I'm using 5.5.9 Resurrection Remix.

You can use a ported app but as it has something to do with the software of the cm roms so, you'll still have the fish eye effect. Also no slow-mo i guess...
