I just got the Captivate last week. I've noticed that it doesn't recognize the USB connection if I just plug in the cable at "normal" speed. If I plug in the USB cable s-l-o-w-l-y the phone recognizes the cable and everything works. If I don't plug in s-l-o-w-l-y the computer gives me a USB inserted sound but the phone doesn't seem to know it is connected.
I've also noticed that the phone will (with the slow insertion) always say usb connected once the cable is inserted even if the computer end is not connected.
Anyone else experience this? Thoughts? Bad phone or bad cable?
What ROM are you using?
What USB Drivers do you have installed if any?
What OS are you running?
Pretty much it depends... if your using a custom ROM that could be the culprit though it doesn't sound like it from what you have posted.
Try re-installing your USB drivers for the Samsung Captivate. Make sure your running the correct version. (Search for Design Gears OTA Odin 1 Click post - has the drivers linked there).
And of course... it could be your computer itself. Reboot fixes 90% of all computer issues
Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband I897UCJH7
Stock - not rooted. Drivers do not seem to be the issue. It happens on multiple computers. Rebooting phone and/or computer does not change things. Same under Windows and Linux.
I kind of have to slowly inch the USB cable into the phone until the phone recognizes it. If the computer end is not connected to anything, the phone sometimes still will recognize the USB cable and say USB connected. If I plug the phone end in first, then the computer end the phone doesn't recognize the connection.

Whenever I connect my HTC One device to my computer via USB, sometimes my PC recognizes it. At other times, however, the USB connection disconnects. It's as if there is a loose connection between the cable and HTC One device. Is there a way to fix this? Or should I replace the cable?

Might be a cable, or it might be an issue with the USB port itself. Not that the USB port is faulty, mind you, just simply that the phone doesn't "like" it. For instance, if I plug my phone using OEM/non-OEM cables into a blue USB3.0 port in the back of my motherboard, I can't use fastboot/ADB commands. However, if I plug it into a pink USB port(supposed to be used by my keyboard/mouse), then there's no problems.

I dint get what you are saying?? I tried many other carging cables, Every cable CHARGES but it does'nt work as USB cable. And If i cant connect my xperia z to computer how am i suppose to reflash my rom ??
Hello. I don't mean to sound rude but if you're saying you search can't connect USB and didn't find anything, I think maybe try to re-phrase your search terms. Try some of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=can't connect with usb
Also, cover the basics. Have you deleted any system apps. Tried USB Debugging Mode. What OS ?
Does it even attempt to install drivers, what does the device manager say ?
What does it do when you connect in flash mode, what about fastboot mode. I had an awful time making my Samsung galaxy s3 to connect via USB to my Mac, I would use my SD Card when installing roms, when I started playing with different ones, I learned real quick that some Roms worked flawlessly, some with some help, some roms wouldn't connect to USB at all. Although that was never the case with my XZ, once it installed the fastboot and fastmode drivers for Windows 7, it's never had an issue, I can't really remember before then.
Also wiggle the card and the connection around see if it quits charging. Those are a few things to try, good luck

I mean that there are cables made only for charging .. not for PC .. the cheap ones with the wall chargers.. they are only charging cable.. not data

Hi
I had exactly the same problem, phone can charge, but can't connect to PC (and doesn't charge from PC as well) .
Factory reset helped to resolve it.

No usb detection at ALL!
Hello,
I have a weird problem with my phone. It's been 3 days and I've tried everything that came to my mind!
First, the phone (Xperia Z3 Compact) was ok, then I noticed I'm low on battery (about 3%), I tried to charge it, connected to charger via micro usb port. Nothing happened, (like it has never been attached at all!) I did it several times, tested the charger and cable on other phones, worked properly on them.
then I tested with several chargers and cables, and tried to charge it with my laptop, even when connecting to the laptop (on Windows), it's like nothing even detected, nothing at all, and on the phone nothing changes (no charging, no data connection, etc.).
Then I tried to restart the OS to see if it solves the problem, but due to the battery-low situation, I couldn't boot it back on! (the battery icon kept coming on the screen). The thing is, on the state before initiating to load the OS (Only the battery icon, big(!) on the screen), it SEEMED to be charging (the charger LED turned on and connecting and disconnecting the cable made difference!). but everytime after several seconds, the SONY logo appeared, and then the smaller battery icon with a 1% text appeared, then the LED turned off and it seemed to be not charging. (I tried it several times, even with 3-vibrate resets, etc. no change)
But when I tried to load it in the Fastboot mode or Flash mode, my laptop detected it without problem. (And did some getvar commands via fastboot, no problem in that state). then I provided a magnetic charger, and charged the phone without problem with that to 100%. But still, in the Android OS, USB does not work at all, no charging via usb, no data mode, no usb detection AT ALL.
Long story short, I even tried these:
Resetting completely to factory settings,
Wiping cache partition,
Flashing (via flashtool) the stock ROM.
and I even flashed the phone with a third party ROM! Still no usb charging/detection! The USB only works in Flash and Fastboot mode!
What do I do?!
I got a wierd one. I got a new work laptop (8.1 old one was 7), and when I connect via usb it goes into some rapid loop of connected/disconnected a couple of times a second
I have pc companion installed, and went and manually installed the flashtool drivers for it also, no difference.

Interestingly, for me it doesn't work with the original Sony cable at my private laptop (Windows 8.1), but it does work with another USB cable at my work laptop (Windows 7).
Hmm, so a different cable did it for you. On mine I moved the cable to another port in the opposite side of the laptop, and it worked fine. I didn't think of trying a different cable. I haven't been game to re-try on the other port.
ok so here's my case:
phone charges well if connected to a chargher-only adapter through USB and charges correctly in it's Sony-socket
phone is not detected by the operating system and I tested it using 2 different cables (that I previously used succesgflly) with: three different PCs, 2 having windows 8.1 (nothing showing up in device manager), one having linux (tried lsusb with the phone connected and disconnected: same output) but...
Phone light's goes blue if I try to start in fastboot mode while connected to a PC (which of course doesn't happen when disconnected or connected to a charger).
I'd like to bring it to service (after trying a hard reset) but I need to backup my data and no idea on how to that without installing a recovery firmware (device is not rooted)
any idea?
Forgot to mention: when I plug the usb club, the experia makes the detection sound.
PS: in the past the USB detection when connected to a PC was faulty, acting like the cable was connected and disconnected continuosly. Previously the connection was working fine.
thanks!
Alessandro
Was anyone able to solve this problem?
My Sony Xperia Z C6603 isn't recognized by any windows PC,
from windows 7, 8, 8.1 to 10. The phone lights up showing it has been connected but the PC won't recognize it.
When i connect it to a charger, it charges just fine.
I have tried Turning n USB debugging ON and OFF, resetting the phone, nothing seems to work.
Any help?
You can try using flashtool to flash a stock FTF
You would use fastboot mode.
You can try a linux live session too to rule out windows
It may be your bios settings
It may be the cable, cables break all the time, get a new one.

Hello everybody!
whenever i leave my mini connected to my computer via usb cable, then reboot the computer, the phone does not recognize the usb connection anymore.
even when i unplug the cable and plug it back in.
i have to reboot the phone, then it works again. this always happens exactly like that, 100% reproducable.
i am using cyanogenmod 7.2.
is there a solution?
thanks.

May be a kernel issue. Play with different kernels.
Sent from my GT-S5570 using XDA Free mobile app
Hi all. I'm running Android 4.4.2 with Sense 6 on InsertCoin - S-OFF. It's been fine for about a full year now - I havent touched ROM/firmware in about 6 months. Just this past week, the device is no longer recognizing any PC connections - it still charges fine with any USB plug, but seems to think every connection is an AC charger. Nothing pops up on my phone or the computer (mac or PC). I have USB debugging on.
ADB does not see the device, in normal boot or in Fastboot.
Fastboot on the phone says "Fastboot AC" where it used to say "Fastboot USB"
Is this a software issue I can rectify from the phone? I have TWRP and root, so I can perform certain things on the device itself. Or should I go to T-Mobile and try to get a replacement (I have insurance on the device)

Are you sure you are using a usb data cable and not only a usb charging cable? Usb data cable have 5V+, Ground, Data+ and Data- connections. Charging cable only have 5V+ and Ground connection and will not be able to communicate with the device. You can test your capble on another device to confirm the cable have data capabilities (using a camera for example or any other device with a micro usb port).
Even if you are sure that you are using a data usb cable, you might want to try another one, maybe that one you are using is defective.

Thanks - yes, I tested this on my Nexus 7 too. All 3 cables I tried connect the N7 to both the Mac and PC fine, I was able to flash an OTA to it. However, the same 3 cables product no results for the HTC One M7.

it doenst sounds good, maybe a defective usb port on your phone... Maybe some dirt inside? Try to clean your port with a cotton swab and Isopropyl alcohol
