I'm in Singapore and now using ARHD 9.4 which runs on the International .401 base.
I'm constantly getting 1-2 bars of LTE only despite my signal strength being good (around RSRP -90 dBm). Singapore is a small place so signal strength is generally good.
I've noticed that the .401 base breaks down the bars as such
1 bar - signal is -100 to -110 RSRP dBm
2 bar - signal is -90 to -99
3 bar - signal is -80 to -89
4 bar - signal is -70 to -79
5 bar - signal is < -70
Which basically is inaccurate... It's almost impossible to get full 5 bars. I've only gotten it once I was right next to the tower. Most of the time I'm on 1-2 bars which is 3-4 on other phones...
This is probably HTC's fault but is there any way to fix this? It's impossible to know now if we're in a place of really bad signal cause its always showing 1 bar...
By the way, this only happens on LTE signal... All other signals like G, 3G or H are all normal like other phones...
Anyone else having this issue?
btw we're on 1800/2600Mhz for our LTE networks.
I have the same problem in france with ARHD 9.4.
I'm about to flash 10.1 and the new radio to see if i'll have a better signal.

It's a widely known fact that ROMs/Kernels sometimes just change how they display the bars when what really matters is the dmb rating. Comparisons have been made where different ROMs/Kernels have been installed on the same device, one showing 5 bars and another showing 3 bars at the exact same place and having the same dbm rating.

yeah but in this case if we're constantly on one bar how would we know when we really have a bad signal?
Not getting LTE signal on HTC One
Hi all,
I'm on ARHD 10.0 and recently purchased an LTE sim have it enabled. I'm currently in the Philippines within LTE zone (getting 4G-LTE using pocket Wifi), but my HTC One is only getting 3G signal and sometimes H. Hope you can help me here as I haven't experience the beauty of LTE yet on my phone
EDIT: I just tried placing the LTE SIM card in the pocket wifi and 4G-LTE appears.

On top of that, it would be nice with a dBm rating instead of the bars.

Try switching back to normal 4G instead of LTE and see if that does anything for you. It's just APN settings, so you can set up both and switch between them for comparison.
Could it be your location?

If you are getting 4-5 bars "almost everywhere in my area except where I live," then it might be logical to assume that you are in a "dead zone." Radio signals go in a straight line. I live in a hilly area. When I drop into a valley driving home, I lose my call signal. It returns as soon as I get to the top of the hill. Similarly, I get a very poor signal at my work location (1st floor interior office), but I can step outside (100 feet away) and get a good signal. You simply are not going to get full strength signals in every single location.

Anyone else having trouble with their LTE reception? I just came from an iPhone 5 and fortunately around me the area is kind of blanketed in LTE but I have yet to get any solid connection on the One where as with my iPhone 5 it would lock on and get great speeds. I saw the LTE on the one pop in a couple times but just for a couple secs and even once long enough to start a Speed Test but then it "lost connection" in the middle of the test. I assume a PRL update is needed or at least I'm hoping its just a PRL update.

I was a bit harsh...The phone is quite capable of grabbing an LTE signal..But in fringe areas is will not hold it.It will switch back to 3G..On the sensorly App it seems anything that is 0-2 bars will grab a signal but will drop it eventually..

This is a software decision.
For most networks, the decision to switch back to 3g would be wise. For most, LTE is blazing fast and 3g is usable. Switching back to 3g on the fringe of an LTE tower is a fine decision on say, Verizon. It also makes sense from a battery standpoint. There is no sense making the higher power LTE radio strain for a signal when there is a perfectly usable 3g one available to a lower power radio.
The problem is with Sprint, with Sprint, you want to hold onto every last drop of LTE because even the faintest, messiest, LTE signal is going to be faster than the 3g.
There will be a software update, I am fairly confident, that will change the values where the the phone gives up on LTE.

I was going to return the phone today but I'll roll the dice in hopes there is an update for this because in those "fringe" areas my Note II holds 4G and its only 2Mbps down and 1Mbps up but it's better than the 3G 28.8k it switches to..
I just hope when the area is covered by more LTE it'll even out..Happy to hear that about Houston which has more coverage that the One holds it's 4G better..This is what im banking on.

I'm smack in the middle of what is supposed to be a fairly saturated LTE area for Sprint (North Dallas, TX) and mine keeps switching between 3G and 4G with total data drops seemingly random and many times throughout the day. What's weird is often times, I'll go to use the phone and the 4G is there and 3 or more bars, and then as soon as I open an app that uses data the connection will drop. It doesn't happen every time, but way more than I can live with. I'm thinking about returning it to Sprint and going with AT&T instead. I just hate to have to hassle with it and pay more for less.

well, then i guess all I can hope for is some sort of update that helps keep 4G connected
Probably has to do with a minimum signal strength value to keep it connected to LTE and not search for a stronger signal. Hopefully there will be an update or a patch to fix this.

I just feel like not enough people are complaining about this issue and it'll just keep working the way it is now. Which would suck.
Through out my searched for the night I ended up at a tmobile website where they too were having the same 4G issues.. Maybe it is a design problem and not just software.

That's helpful...with issues like this, especially at or near launch of a new device, it's always a question of device vs. network vs. software issues. I'm always skeptical that the device is the issue, especially on flagship models. I posted on a Sprint forum and one user said he took his phone back and Sprint swapped it for another HTC One and he's had no issues. Says he thinks it's some type of provisioning issue, which I am not too sure of. But he said he a similar issue with the Evo LTD (I think) and swapped and no more issues. There also was a Sprint rep that chimed in on the thread and advised me that an Vision upgrade had been made in my area yesterday and to update profile and prl and then power down for 3-5 minutes. I followed that advice but I'm still having issues. For reference, I'm in 75240 zip code.

Yeah, I think most of us that have been around a while realize that. I could care less about the bars. Hell, I hardly even talk on the phone. What I need is Data to work, consistently. I don't even care if it's 4G if a decent 3G is available and would provide a consistent connection. Well, yeah, I would prefer it be 4G. The selling point for Sprint right now is their prices and unlimited Data. When you factor in that they are really trying to upgrade their network to compete with the other big 2, and are oriented towards customer concerns at the moment, it makes them appealing. But they got to get the data consistent, especially in large markets like Dallas, TX, or they are just going to keep on churning customers. I just switched to them from Verizon as I was at the end of my contract and was a bit tired of Big Red's bullying, but I have to hand it to them, their network is fantastic. I might be going right back to them, or take a chance on AT&T, which I switched from to Verizon a couple years ago.
I'm curious to know if anyone on T-Mobile has any sort of signal issue.
The unit I have in hand has little to no signal at all. I've put it side by side every other phone in the store and the other phones [literally every phone on display at the local store] and the Nexus 6 only gets roughly 2 bars of LTE.
Myself as well as the store employee have gone over the mobile settings [same as my Note 4] and same as all other display phones and the signal quality is horrible on the N6.
The store rep swapped SIMs and rebooted several times with no change.
I'm very curious to see what feedback gets left here on this. I was planning on getting rid of my Note 4 for the N6 but not if the signal is horrible.

Not to say that there is nothing going on, but graphical display of bars means very little to actual signal strength. At bare minimum run some speed test checks on all three devices in the same spot.

Hey thanks for the reply. I also did a side by side with my Nexus 5 bone stock and shows the same thing. Very weak signal.
I know that AOSP shows true signal and no 'signal boosting' like Sense and TW, But my N5 is showing 5 bars of LTE next to the N6. A few others have responded to me on G+ that they are in fact seeing the same weak signal.
Stock firmware on T-Mobile branded devices tells the bars to report based on the 2G radio strength.
Whereas on stock Android 5.0, the bars report based on the best technology you're connected to (LTE, for instance)
This makes TMo look good essentially in the eyes of the average consumer.
If you go to Settings, you'll find the Nexus 6 will have the same LTE signal strength as the other phones.
Simply put, signal quality is just fine. All bars aren't created equal.
---------- Post added at 12:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:19 PM ----------
Since the Nexus 5 was sold by T-Mobile, it was smart enough to switch bar algorithms when it connected to a T-Mobile APN.
The Nexus 5 with Lollipop and the Nexus 6 do not seem to do this anymore. Maybe it will change with the wi-fi calling update.

Thanks for the great reply. My Nexus 5 is running 5.0. I also have a Note 4 but that's not included because of the signal algorithm used on that device. Just don;t know why my N5 shows full LTE but the N6 shows roughly 2 bars sitting side by side.
Try these:
1) Go to Testing menu
- Go to Phone Dialer
- Input *#*#4636*#*#
2) Go to Phone Information
3) Scroll down and make sure it says LTE/GSM auto (PRL)

Yup, confirmed when at the store. Not there now so I can't run anymore side by sides or tests.
A greater comparison would be showing the actual dbm meter in the settings menu for all devices. We all know different manufactures display bars as they which.
In comparing the N6 to my N5 the dbm is consistently better on the N6 and it stays connected to LTE vs dropping to HSPA/UMTS like the N5 does. SO far
Signal check app will tell db of signal all connections. ....or you can find the same info in settings
I confirm this, but only with anecdotal evidence.
I just recently switched to T-Mobile after using their Test Drive. The iPhone 5s that I originally had, couldn't get LTE signal very well or at all at my desk at work. I switched to a Moto G LTE before my Test Drive was over, and the signal was drastically better. No issues with the G in handling streaming music.
Today is my first day with my N6 at work, and signal reception is similar to the iPhone 5s. I have to turn off LTE because reception is so low that I can't even stream Spotify or Play Music. I just hope band 12 rolls out soon...

I can vouch for the area I live in that the N6 works perfectly. At first, my friend had issues on his Tmobile network, and he couldnt find out why. In fact it was so bad that he couldnt even connect to the network. He took his phone to me, I took out the sim, blew on it, restarted his phone. Then we stared in awe as the bars quickly filled on up.
Experience with my Nexus 6 so far is mostly the same.
Maybe 2 or 3 dBm weaker than my Nexus 5 with Lollipop was.

Totally agree with @mb3030
If you want to see your signal strength in dBm (Decibel milliwatts) or asu (arbitrary strength unit), go to Settings>About Phone>Status.
ICYDK, a dBm value closer to 0 is better, so check your signal in different environments.
In my house I'm at -95 dBm/45 asu. Outside I'm at -86/54.

Speedtest what about three bars. Excuse the blurry picture it was taken with a nexus 7 lol
Like many have said, graphical interpretation is independent on each phone. A 1 bar on one phone might equal to 3 bar on a different phone from a different manufacturer. Best way to check signal strength is through dBm/asu value and speed test.
T-Mobile user in metro area.
Today was the first time I took my N6 out of house. One of the first things I noticed was signal strength (bar) was lower than my N5 running 5.0 in the same places around my neighborhood.
I did a couple speed tests and yep, was getting much slower results than the N5 in the same areas a few days ago.
Another odd thing was the fact I had a Moto X (2014) a month ago and sent it back in anticipation of the N6. Its signal strength was fantastic (better than the N5).
Very confused as to why a phone that is based off the Moto X seems to have a much harder time with signal strength. I am going to mess with it some more but so far I am disappointed with the signal strength compared to the N5.
Another note. The update that was sent OTA this week seemed to have a flash for the radios. Not sure that has anything to do with anything but throwing it out there.
I can tell you there is something wonky with this phone.
I live in NYC, where Wideband 15x15 LTE is deployed. On my Nexus 5, I was pulling over 40-50mbps down, with full signal strength (as should be with all of the coverage in NYC).
Now on the Nexus 6, the signal strength shows like 25%, and my download speeds are only 20-25mbps. Those speeds are still definitely fine for my needs (Plex, Pandora, and browsing/emails), but there is definitely something going on with this new phone.
Here's mine from here in Las Vegas
It's not like the radio is tweaked for tmos network.... It's the same radio in all 4 variants on the carriers. Give it time. Updates to the baseband will help. My n5 used to lose signal completely all the time. Drove me nuts. I haven't had one issue yet and I actual have a data connection in the building I work in with my 6
Ive had a good search and seen some threads of this been done on other devices and wondered if possible on the N6?
Im not used to the H,H+ etc and my OCD is at full rage not seeing my usual 3g/4g.
Appreciate any help on this.
Thanks!
So you want to change the accurate network types of e, 3g, h, h+ and LTE to what exactly? E, 3g, 3g, 3g, and 4g?
Yeah you could edit all the icons and replace them.
I'd have thought someone with ocd would prefer accurate information

Seems i must of missed something, i was under the assumption (incorrectly) that H was HPRS and H+ was 3g and LTE ofcourse 4G.
Done my research and can see i was WAY out.

Ah ok...
Yeah so basically:
GPRS = 2g
Edge = 2.5g
3G = 3g
HSPA = 3.5g
HSPA+ = 3.5g
LTE = 4g

If you want your OCD to really rage full, learn a bit about these codes;
2G/3G/4G are all 100% meaningless crap marketing terms made up and used by phone carriers to pretend differences.
There ARE NO hard and fast rules about applying them.
Phone carriers HAVE been known to refer to HSPA *AS* 4G.
Let your OCD rage now about how you've been mislead, and be happy when you actually see H and H+, which are short for HSPA and HSPA+, because at least that *means something*.

AARRGGHH! :crying: lol
I have read before that phone 'signal' as we think we know it is rubbish. The bars of signal are meaningless, 1 bar will give you as much strength as 5.
On my iPhone i get 2g at work all day, nexus 6 with same sim im getting H and H+ and actually receiving texts and calls.
I was just hoping to see what im used to 2G/3G/4G etc but now youve cleared this up for me ill sleep easy lol :good:

This is somewhat true. On one device, lets take nexus 6 as an example - Bar 1 will always be the same signal strength range, as will bar 2, 3 etc. What you cannot do, is compare bar 1 on a nexus 6 with bar 1 on another device, because there is no consistency and the ranges used are most likely different.
True signal strength can be seen in both db and asu, in settings > About phone > Status. And signal strength is not related to whether you are connected to 3g, H or LTE

Yes exactly, should been more clear that this differs device to device.

Its not just device to device... its firmware to firmware!
Remember the apple antennagate problem, where if you held the thing wrong it would knock you down by 3 bars? You know what they did to solve that problem? They modified the relationship between "bars" and actual signal strength.

Part of what I think you're referring to, is that it is a digital signal. A digital signal can be thought of as being in one of two distinct states; ENOUGH, or NOT ENOUGH.
Whether it is showing 1 bar on the screen, or 4 (or 5 depending on the OS...), as long as it has ENOUGH, then there will be no issue with communications.
The ONE AND ONLY thing that the "bars" can tell you, is whether you might be *approaching* the state of not enough.
Hi,
I bought the mentioned model online and using FIDO sim Card. I have moved from Canadian S8+. Note 8 shows data connection as "4G" (as against LTE of S8+) and I am getting 4 signal bars instead of 5. I am not noticing any signal drops or slow internet speeds though. I am just wondering if this is something i need to worry about. I still have the option to return the phone. If this is a serious issue, I would rather return the phone and buy a Canadian model. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi, I think some (or maybe all?) of the international models simply show the 4G icon instead of the usual LTE icon that we're used to. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's normal.
For the reception: could it just be 4 bars due to your location, or has it been consistently lower than expected in different places too? If it's persisting then you could check which bands are supported on that model versus the ones used by Fido. Might just be bad reception in your area too...hard to say.
True 4G on INT models is same as LTE. Im using same phone and network, no issues.
Can second this.
Ask your Carrier to confirm your IMEI on their end and refresh (provision) your SIM.
Before I only received 4G on my Exynos but after the refresh, I now get 4G+.

good to know that.thanks! looks like the 4g/lte icon issue is more of a cosmetic thing but doesnt really effect data speeds.
However, I am very sure signal bars a consistently lower than S8+. I hardly see Note 8 getting all bars unless I am out on roads, not the case with S8. how about you?

Thank you.I have actually called fido and the lady indeed took the imei and made me restart the phone. I am yet to see 4G+ though. Thanks again!

yeah the bars are consistently low but didn't notice any drop in quality. Funny thing is only after getting this phone I realized how rarely we use these devices for actual phone calls anymore! Today whole day I didnt get any phone call from anyone, only tons of messages on various apps. I finally had to call myself from my desk phone!

I should note, and I failed too, that I do receive 4G+ but usually in larger areas. I live in a small city of 15, 000 and sometimes catch 4G+. If I'm in a much denser populous, I always get 4G+ (except when I'm on a call; it switches to 3G or HSPA depending on which SIM is in).
Case in point, was in Toronto this past weekend and had 4G+ all weekend long.

Hi,
I am facing the same issue. Phone only shows 4 G + Reception Signal is weak
When I use 3G APN signal is stronger. Can you please share APN Settings you used
Thanks
