Hey,
Since I always used GSM Auto PRL as default preferred network type on my old Android device (and had a much better battery life), I wonder why I can't set it on my XT890 (unbranded (i guess, bought it directly from Motorola Germany) unlocked and rooted - 91.2.26001.XT890.Retail.en.EU - also same network provider).
Per default "WCDMA preferred" is selected, I can successfully switch to "GSM only" and "WCDMA only" but choosing "GSM Auto PRL" always reverts back to the last applied setting instantly.
Any clues, why it doesn't work?
Thanks in advance for any input,
Cheers

Hi,
I am using Nexus One in India, and my service provider is MTNL Mumbai. Their network is 3G enabled. I have 3G activated by the service provider too. I have put the settings for my APN, using the settings available here -- dolphin.mumbai.mtnl.net.in/cominfo/docs/general.doc (Sorry, I am not able to post links)
However, try as I might, I have only the "E" icon displayed in the status bar displayed, no 3G. The EDGE network works properly, I am able to surf, but of course, it is horribly slow.
Things I have tried:
- Settings, Mobile networks, uncheck "Use 2G networks only"
- Go to test menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and set the phone mode to "WCDMA only"
- Searched google for people having the same problem
When I set the network mode to "WCDMA only", for some time it shows no network, and then again drops back to "WCDMA Preferred", and shows the "E" icon. My N-1 was bought from Singapore, it original had the EPF21B build on it. Hence, I am assuming that my radio is hardware compatible with my service provider..? MTNL uses European 3G frequencies. Also, the problem is the service itself, since I am able to activate and use 3G properly in my Nokia E51.
Currently, I am running the FRF50 Froyo build - I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted my N1. However, the same problem used to occur on the stock EPF21B build, even when the phone was "virgin".
I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.
If I see correctly, your provider works with 2100 MHz - which would make it compatible with both Nexus versions, so the problem most likely isn't there.
Yes, MTNL Mumbai uses 2100 MHz. Any other ideas or suggestions, please?
This is not a question, but an answer... Just in case anyone has the same problem as me.
I have just rooted & upgraded to FRF85B, when going through the set up I was advised to switch on wi-fi as I had no data connection, after setup & sync I still had no 3G. I checked, deleted & entered my APN again & again. Nothing
So I tried a few custom roms, with exactly the same problem.
After a nandroid back to the stock rom I searched & found a reference to the "Testing Menu" in an archive from this very forum no less
Then I remembered a similar problem with my old Hero.
The thread suggested changing the "set preferred Network Type" to WCDMA, but this I presume is for american handsets.
What I did instead was change it to "GSM auto (PRL)" & within a few seconds.. WHAM! FULL 3G
Seems that UK roms have this already changed by networks, but this universal one didn't
Any U.K. users watch out for this one, it's been driving me round the twist for about 3 hours
So to sum up:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* on your keypad
In testing menu select "phone Information"
Scroll down to the bottom
Set preferred network type to " GSM auto (PRL) "
Wait for your 3G signal
press back arrow to exit out
Problem solved !!
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some help.
I'm wanting to set my network to "WCMDA Preferred" under *#*#4636#*#*. I am running Ramad's Stock Deodexed 2.3.3 JVH with CF-Root v3.2.
I had it set to "WCDMA Preferred" a few days ago after the Vodafone Shop in N.Z set it to "WCMDA Preferred" which made my 3G Connection much quicker.
I had to fix a problem and had to re-flash 2.3.3 JVH with CF-Root and when i went into *#*#4636#*#* it was already set to "WCDMA Preferred" but once I exited, it reverted back to "GSM/CDMA, auto (PRL)" and I can't change it back to "WCDMA Preferred".
The Vodafone Shop told me I need to select WCDMA Only under the Wireless & Network>Mobile Networks>Network Mode, but then I can only select WCDMA under Radio Bands.
Does anyone know how I can fix this, would it be worth me reflashing 2.3.3?
Cheers,
Don't you have a "WCDMA Only" option in "Network Mode" ? Select that...

If I select that I don't get as good reception as when set to the "GSM/CDMA" auto mode.
Hi all, the question i'm about to ask has been asked on the internet before but i couldnt find any satisfactory explanation for it. I wanted to change my Preferred Network Type from 3G to 2G as 3G reception is not available where i live , i read on some forums that using 2G only setting can prevent the phone from searching for 3G network intervally which may save some battery. Now, i'm confused about which mode to choose for 2G , i dialed *#*#4636#*#* and went to Phone Information, then clicked on "Preferred Network Type" which, by default, was on WCDMA Preferred, What option should i change it to? GSM Auto or GSM Only? my phone is an unlocked htc M7_U so i cant choose the GSM/WCDMA/LTE Option (it would hog even more battery i think) . Also , can changing this Preferred Network Type have any effect on anything else besides the 2G/3G Network options? i mean, is it safe as long as i change the Network type to the correct option? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
I think gsm only mode.

thanks , can anyone confirm this? also , does changing Preferred Network Type has any effect on anything else besides switching between 2G/3G/4G mode?

should be fine setting to "GSM only", setting it to "LTE/4G only" could make problems, because most carriers don't support calls over LTE (mine would be an example: so if I set to LTE only, I can't make or receive calls, so when it's on auto, it automatically changes to 2G/3G during a call)
You can also just change the setting in:
Settings -> Mobile data -> Network mode -> GSM Only

Thanks, GSM Only it is then.
Hey guys!
I bought a Moto X Dev Edition, XT1053 with the Tmobile rom i guess.
Thing is, when I got to preferred networks options, I only have "Automatic - 2G".
Automatic would be LTE/3G/2G. I do not have the "middle" option to toggle to 3G/2G, as most phones with LTE support do have.
Hence, either I have ALL bands or just 2G. The problem here is that in my country LTE is being deployed right now, so signal is really week on most places and having my Moto X in "Automatic" REALLY drains my battery. I have to use it with 2G and then switch to Automatic when i need it, which is really annoying. Basically, I really need the "3G" option that most phones have, which involves 3g or 2g depending on signal strenght.
Thing is, I need an app that would let me choose either if I really want the Auto mode (all bands, being 4G preferred) and also being able to choose 'WCDMA preferred', which is the mode my XT1053 is missing and also the mode I'm needing right now.
*#*#4636#*#* code doesn't work on my Moto X. Also I looked at PlayStore and there's a bunch of them, neither of them really generate trust on my, as they are old and receie really low opinions. I don't want to start messing around with apps and broke something here
I read on another forums that "Radio Switcher" works this out, but I saw screenshots of it (didn't actually tried it) and, aside being a really outdated app, it does have the "wcdma preferred" option but do not have the "auto" mode for all bands together (as I think some day I will use, when 4G signal becomes more strong in future).
Do you guys know a cool and updated app that would let me choose between "Auto" and also "WCDMA preferred" (the one missing in my phone) ??
Your help will be really appreciated.
Thanks so much!!!!
Well, I ended up installing Radio Switcher and for my surprise it works perfect!
If I want to use 3G preferred (the option the XT1053 stock doesn't have) I select "WCDMA preferred". If I want to use just 2G I choose "GSM only" and if I want to use the "Auto" option that my XT1053 have, I choose "LTE/gsm auto (PRL)" option.
So, I'm good now. The only problem is that Lollipop seems to have changed this hidden menu, and all these apps are outdated, so I might be in trouble again when I get Lolli in the near future.
