[Q] can any rom use any kernel ? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

i am still no0b...
i have no issue rooting, flashing, installing roms on samsung galaxy phone.. [other ppl phone, i aint got much to loose ] . instructions are everywhere online.
but for my personal phone this phone if it wasn't for xda ( thanks guys) i'd be totally dumb.. ...
i need to know a bit more about kernels. and roms for this phone
right now i am using this rom [STOCK ROM] AT&T ICS, de-odexed, zip-aligned, rooted, bloated (For chefs or whoever) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583028
and the stock rom that came with the Hasoon2000 all-in-one toolkit or can i use 'FLASH IMAGE GUI' ?
no really problems with this rom i guess the rare random mysterious reboot.. but i wonder what it would do with a different kernel
btw its: rooted, bootloader unlocked but still S-on,
I would like to know :
1) which other kernel can be flawlessly used with this rom ... which do u recommend AND WHY ?
2) what do i need to do first before i switch kernels
3) will i loose any data, settings, info, contacts, flashed apps eg ultra hq camera or so when i flash kernel... ?
4) i assume i can use Hansoon all-in-one tool to flash the kernel right?
thanks in advance guys

well i got ballzy
and flash Komikz kernel RC 1 with Sweep2Wake using Flash Image Gui
all seems well.. flash it twice just incase
(the phone isnt smoking )
havent tried wifi as yet though
i just randomly chose that kernel still dont know what real different it make with the stock and any other custom kernel..
some info, recommendation pllz.
also how do i manage the kernel ?
thanks in advance

Oh well just tried WiFi.... Says connected, nothing coming through though.

You have to find a kernel that runs on what you want... If you are running cm10 or PAC or something thats "pure" android then you need an AOSP kernel such as sultans( his is both AOSP and Sense)
Pretty much sultans kernel is the only other kernel i would touch here on xda as its being updated regularly

Actually my vivid has always been... *special* (if you know what i mean,...shhh) It does what it wants when it wants and however it wants... sometimes kernels wont flash sometimes they will ... hell sometimes my battery lasts 24hrs with huge usage and 4 hours with no usage...

Thanks for the replies...
As stated above I using as stock zip aligned, dedoxed ROM.
I am considering a custom ICS rom now though.. Right now leaning towards Holics or Virturous...
But will consider and stable, least bug possible, good looking room.
(Just tired of the same lame GB look of vivid stock ICS, damm green battery etc.
Kindda sad to know how many Samsung phones I've updated to jb for friends and can't get a proper jb for my phone)
Anyway....I flashed the kernel a 3rd time & WiFi is working now
But I still want more info and recommendation on kernels ( & ROMs).

now that i'm running KozmiKKernel RC 1 kernel how do i manage/set it

Yup, I need to drop the processor speed to 1.5ghz. This 1.7ghz is rap!ng the battery.
edit:
i'm trying romtoolbox ( always been afraid of this app)
lowering the cpu to 1.5ghz see if that helps
or should i :
a) recalibrate the battery
b) switch to holics kernel

fauxxxed up
oh my ! i messed up baddly......
so as i said i flashed to holic kernel......
no wifi, flashed 4 times , wifi just wouldn't turn on
so i was going to go back to stock.. but no i tried faux kernel..and did it ever fauxxxx up my phone ... bootloops for ever.
and since this phone is my only source of internet.. i could not get to xda to figure out the issue.
so i tried:
1) flashing back the stock kernel using Hasoon all-in -one tool.. = bootloop
2) flashing back komickz kernel " " " " = bootloop
3) " " stock " " " " " = bootloop
4) did a NAND restore using wcx recovery = stuck on HTc bootscreen
5) curling up in the fetal position and crying = " " " "
6) tried flashing back this ROM = " " " "
7) tried running the at&t stock ics ruu = failed
then i remembered the i had to relock the bootloader, i relocked it , ran the ruu= SUCCESS (all be it i lost stuff off my phone and with stock rom again.)
but I have my phone back.
question: shouldn't the NAND restore fix the problem ?
i going to flash thing rom back , but will wait until monday.
side note:
thinks guys because if it wasnt for this forum ( & my suprizingly decent memory) I would have a paperweight right ..

whats our rom?
I have the stock rom
okay about flashing a new rom I have many questions
1 - In my previous phone lg optimus me/p350 I flashed custom rom I lost the rtl support(because I'm using arabic)
2- when I flashed CM7 in my previous phone the battery was draining very quickly
So
1- what is the best custom roms for black
2- is the rom you will say in the question 1 has rtl support
3-is the rom you will say in question 1 has long battery life time??
*** if I should flash one How???
by using smart flash tool or kdz tool(I can use them all)
thnx in advance
I currently use the ICS port and I have rtl support (when typing in Hebrew) and battery life is okay ( I guess you can go through 2 days of light use).
I would also recommend trying the latest CM7 because I remember it having rtl support as well.
Don't forget to backup your current rom just in case you need to get back to it.
I hope I helped
For good battery life use Zeus Rom, for me are the best in battery life, 2 days with me.

[Q] what rom and kernel are best on save battery charge

every body that test different Roms and kernel, help me to find a good rom for save battery charge.
i need battery charge more for my work.
From my experience the new wild child rom and kernel is the best for stability and battery life. He makes a rom based on the telstra velocity rom or one based on at+t that you can tweak through an inbuilt application. You can only download it through his site search Google for wcx illuminati but you will have to register before you will see the vivid forum

Not liking the "feature" of not being able to turn off LTE though
Will have to go back to a Tel$tra based rom to get this feature back though I think!

Personally I use somewhere in the 1500 max, 360 min range. I use the intelledemand governor and the noop scheduler. Works great for me. This is on Holics Kernel 0730 though, which I have found to be the best kernel out there.

(Help) I've not asked for help in ages but right now I need it! lol

Now up until two nights ago I was on jb slim bean ROM which was amazing...but I wanted to try jellybam so to be safe I flashed hydro core 3.5 and my note would not boot' just note logo screen so I went ahead and flashed v7 and it booted! Anyway I went right ahead after and flashed jellybam. Now after a day jellybam is just not for me'! To many options and I did not like a lot of things if honest so this brings me to try half illusion ROM so I thought OK let me flash hydro core again and once again no boot' I flashed like 5 hydro kernels and my note would not boot' it would only show note logo and then just be blank. I then had that "forbidden" kernel that's banned on here but it booted my phone. So everything is back to normal with jellybam again but I just want the half illusion rom now as the reviews have been great.
So can someone point me in the direction of the latest half illusion ROM ' not the link to the post but the actual latest one to download? Its just so annoying me as theirs so many with just titles and dates . Now since I'm on that forbidden kernel which is safe I hope lol I really cannot understand why hydro core does this on jellybam when u flash it? I just need to get out of this asap he he.
Appreciate all the help if possible. Thanks

The mistake u r doing is though you are flashing a safe kernel, HC, you should reboot in recovery ( see in advanced in CWM) and flash your ROM of choice.
Can't understand why you are trying to reboot the phone with a non compatible kernel versions.
As others have already commented 'confusion' should be your nick name.

Stock ROM vs Custom ROM

With all the hype about the official sense 6 ota rolling out I've been considering reverting back to stock w/ root. The reason is I dont use many of the features that custom roms offer, I like how sense 6 looks and prefer it to be stock (no init.d support etc).
I dont care about features or performance, my only concern is battery life, so how does the stock rom compare to custom roms on the HTC One in terms of battery life?

I find that quite interesting
you are on xda-developers but recommend staying stock... somewhat of a controversy there, no?
and stock doesn't have bugs?
I have to agree with slogger. I tried most of custom ROMs on xda and none of them can match my stock 4.4.2 in combination with Elemental kernel. I have perfectly smooth, fast phone and my battery lasts around 50 hours off charge with moderate use with CPU OCed to 2.05 GHz

I read that that wont work, since the stock rom has a secure kernel. You would need an unsecure kernel in order to be able to write another on over it.
But ill give it a shot regardless.

No you don't. The secure kernal affects for example deleting system apps or any bloat software that you don't want. It will be back after a reboot. You can flash anything in recovery no probs

Information and Help

Hello,
I'm new here and I'm looking for a good stable rom for my daily use (fully functional) and most importantly stable , I'm actually tired of how my phone performs on the stock rom, I would like to have fast and smooth performance. Is there anything possible? Help and suggesstions will be highly appreciated.
I'm using the Rogers HTC Raider 4G.
Regards.
No one?
I think the best way to do it is to try each one for a couple of days, while making notes about their pros & cons. One person could tell you that one rom is the best, while another could tell you a different rom is the best. It's all up to you.

This is a developers forum, there are a lot of roms here for one device, I'm not a developer, I'm just an individual looking for one or two. All I'm saying is that, a developer has knowledge and experience, if a developer would care to suggest one or two, I would be out of the scenario of trying each one, because for a daily user like me, it would be a pain. You know what I'm saying, right?

OK...
I hate to do this...
But
CM 11 is nice and stable... But old...
PAC 4.4.4 is stable-ish... Has some bugs... But its in nightlies... So bugs come and go...
Ressurection Remix is really nice and stable... But very old... So you'll have some compatibility issues with things...
Any of the CM 10.2 ROMs are bad battery drainers due to old kernel issues...
Ditto for the CM 10 ROMs...
I hate sense... But any of the sense based ROMs are really stable... If you go with those... Kozmik's kernel is very nice... The senseless sense ROMs are a little messy... But very usable...

One more thing, the CM 11 is the 4.2.2 Rom isn't it? I've seen it on some Raiders these days, is it good for daily use?
Thankyou again.

I'm restricted to post in the other thread, is Kozmik's kernel compatible with the stock ICS sense 3.6 rom?
And if so, is it possible to flash it via fastboot through pc? Because I'm currently S-on and don't plan to go S-off.
Mentioning again that I have a Roger's HTC Raider.
