Stock ROM vs Custom ROM - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With all the hype about the official sense 6 ota rolling out I've been considering reverting back to stock w/ root. The reason is I dont use many of the features that custom roms offer, I like how sense 6 looks and prefer it to be stock (no init.d support etc).
I dont care about features or performance, my only concern is battery life, so how does the stock rom compare to custom roms on the HTC One in terms of battery life?

I would say stick to stock as much as possible because custom roms have bugs and u have to wait till devs finds any solutions

I find that quite interesting
you are on xda-developers but recommend staying stock... somewhat of a controversy there, no?
and stock doesn't have bugs?

I have to agree with slogger. I tried most of custom ROMs on xda and none of them can match my stock 4.4.2 in combination with Elemental kernel. I have perfectly smooth, fast phone and my battery lasts around 50 hours off charge with moderate use with CPU OCed to 2.05 GHz

Alright then I guess im going to run an RUU later. One thing though, how do you get a custom kernel to flash ontop of the stock rom?

The same way you flash a kernel on a custom rom. Flash it from custom recovery. Make sure that the kernel you want to use is Sense compatible

I read that that wont work, since the stock rom has a secure kernel. You would need an unsecure kernel in order to be able to write another on over it.
But ill give it a shot regardless.

Just flash it via custom recovery like you wuld flash a ROM

I unlocked my bootloader and flashed Elemental right away, so I guess not

No you don't. The secure kernal affects for example deleting system apps or any bloat software that you don't want. It will be back after a reboot. You can flash anything in recovery no probs

Clean reinstall ICS - need help choosing the right ROM

Getting sick of the ICS battery and kernel issues and have decided to clean out the phone and install everything fresh.
I am currently on an unrooted stock ICS ROM (N7000XXLRK) and understand that I should go back to a GB ROM first then install ICS. I will search on here for a guide on how to do it (links welcome ) but am confused as to which ROM I should use of the many stock ROMs posted on here.
Since I am going to do a clean install, is it worth going back to the XXLRK ROM or is there an improved one which has sorted the battery kernel issues out? Which GB ROM can I safely go back to without confusing things before I reflash ICS?
Is it recommended that anything else is added or flashed while I have the hood up? Unless there is an uber stable custom ROM I want to stay stock, but will want to root it.

upgrading to the latest ICS kernel doesn't necessarily guarantee that your deep sleep and excessive battery usage woes will go away.... your deep sleep and battery drain issues are subjective and have lots of factors that might contribute to it.
Don't let the notion fool you into thinking that your issues(above) will simply be resolve by simply upgrading to the latest firmware. Because I'll tell you now.. it will not still. (infact there have been people complaining that upgrading to the latest ICS one have increase more their battery drain than ever before), unusual as it may seem... but it has been complained about already.

First thing I am just wondering why this quoting is broked ? looks like something is broken in this thread.
Second thing I didn't advised anyone (not the op) that your issues will be resolved by just doing the things mentioned above. Confused ? Third I was just answering him the question he asked in "OP"
Fourth if you are facing deep sleep issues or your device is not going to deep sleep mode then OP can try this..
Turn ON the Airplane Mode.
Switch Off your Phone.
Take the battery OUT for a minute or TWO
Put it back and start your phone.
Wait for everything to load
Turn off the Airplane Mode.

Thanks for that.
I have tried the method you describe and also looked at CPUSpy with BBS and on top of that I have the keyboard lockup issue too in Chrome.
It seems that the quality of the phone is completely lower since the ICS updates with it not providing a full day of use on one charge as well as me having to be careful about bleutooth/wifi usage and time that I use the phone to surf. Quite ridiculous really and I haven't had to use a smartphone like this since the days of the HTC Diamond.
Before I revert back to GB and be done with it, I want to try an nice clean ICS install and give it one last chance, unless there is a custom ICS ROM you think I should consider.

Yes, using pc odin you can flash what you like. If you want good battery, it's worth doing a clean install ie perform data wipe/factory reset to clear any old mess, obviously if you're going onto ics make sure you have a safe kernel before performing any wipes at all.
To be honest though, for ICS you're getting pretty good battery life, I doubt you'll top it except going back to GB.
All the best, let us know how you get on.

Yes, I understand that WipeAll is the best way. But this mean, flash safe kernel = root (or can i just flash safe kernel on my stock ICS via PC odin? )
And root ICS = go to GB directly rooted kernel and....etc.
In my old Galaxy Spica I have change kernel or mod (rom) every month but was always just 2.2 froy. So no worry about it.
And still i am reading all thread of all rom in XDA. No rom is perfect. Its working but sometimes some bugs...so i am tired (2 years with Spica) of looking for the best kernel for my note.
Now i want just one normal working with a little good live of battery
btw. What is your live of battery on custom kernel 4.0.3. ? If you say i have pretty good battery i will not it change

Firstly battery: ics swallows a lot more juice than gb, so what you're getting is pretty good. I'm currently on paranoid android jb beta 1.4 with Beastmode kernel and getting roughly 8 hours with 4 hours screen on. I use it a lot! When I was on pure ics 4.03 I was getting around the same.
Roms and kernels: if you flash an already rooted gb, you can do so now with pc odin and it will automatically root. When you've done that, check to see if cwm is installed as it may be part of the package in which case your good to go, if not just flash a Chainfire kernel. Then you have cwm recovery (vol up, home and power) and flash this rom package which includes a safe kernel.
Hope that makes sense.

I presume these ROMs have their kernels built in.
Would you thus recommend one of these custom ROMs for my requirements over say stock ICS with perhaps a different kernel? I am not really looking for lots of features as I would like to build up the apps on my own, ie shut out bloatware. I would like it to be stable and have at least 15 hours of battery life with 3-4 hours screen time, which is what I enjoyed with GB. How do you think CM9 fits in with your selection?
Last flashing I did was on a Dell Streak which was easy as there was only DJ Steve at the time, Seems with the Note I am starting again from scratch, completely different flash process and loads of ROMs. Sort of blinded by it all to be honest

I recommend you to unlock your fastboot first, and install a recovery.
After that, you can try the ARHD rom which is already tweaked and close to the stock rom.
Also with this rom you can wak your device with the volume button.
If you are still not happy enough, you might try the ElementalX kernel.
With this kernel I can get around 5-7h screen on time, it depends on my usage.
Flash viper rom.... There are so many tweaks that it will take you probably days to discover and enjoy all of them... You will never look at any other rom

[q] how to flash stock kernel

I WAS WONDERING HOW I CAN FLASH THE SONY'S STOCK KERNEL ON A CUSTOM ROM LIKE CYANOGENMOD AND AOKP
BECAUSE ALL THE OHER KERNELS HAVE REALLY BAD BATTERY LIFE

First, here are steps in turning off caps lock:
http://www.wikihow.com/Turn-Off-Caps-Lock
Secondly, please search before you post.
Thirdly, if somehow you just can't find what you're looking for:
No, you can't use Sony's kernel on CM11 based ROMs.
You can flash Doom's advanced stock kernel which is just Sony's stock kernel with added recovery via recovery if you want to switch back to stock-based ROMs. It is found in Doomkernel thread, please search for it.
Even we would really like to see AOSP/CM/MIUI on stock kernel, there's no luck...
But...
There are some projects trying to build MIUI on stick kernel so join them and try to help...

CM,PAC other custom roms need custom kernel only..
there are no chances they work on stock kernel....
stock based roms only work on stock kernel
so in conclusion
is there any custom rom out there for xperia z1 that has a really good battery life ?

CoCore

Sometimes on my i9070 I experience some lag. Sometimes much, sometimes a little. I've read some posts here to look into some issues with this phone and came across something (a kernel I believe) called CoCore. It seems it is used for overclocking the processor for a nice performance boost.
At the moment the phone is running unofficial cyanogenmod 11. Will it be wise or helpfull to install this CoCore on the device? And what are the risks involved?
Cocore kernel is for stock ROM. CM 11 has its own kernel that is based on Cocore too. Try using Greenify app maybe on the apps you don't use often that might run in the background. Search for the app on Playstore or here on xda.

Hmm, so what do you think gives a smoother phone? Stock with cocore or a custom rom?

Lagfix is not a kernel, just an app to run regularly (manually if you use free version).
Personally I think that, if you don't have the patience to customize Stock Rom with Cocore kernel properly, you should try some Android 4.4 Custom Rom until you find a good one for you.
I keep using Stock Rom just for one reason, I customized it too much and I'm too lazy to start again.
Thanks a lot for all of your answers. I think I will keep using this room I'm using right now and when I get bored I'll try a version of jb with lagfix, or maybe I will just use stock with CoCore. The rom I'm using now sure is very stable.
Everything goes to show that it's all good and just a matter of personal taste. But some roms are definitely better than others.

At the moment it has cyanogenmod 11 (unofficial), with flattington theme. This doesn't make the phone faster, but it doesn't have hangups or lag like touchwiz. It's a very nice looking theme!

Neither. 7.19.401.2. .22 gave me all sorts of issues, so I downgraded back to good old .2

No problem! Živio [emoji6]
Self-compiled CM for damn sure - it's already grown into a habit.
To get back what I love about HTC devices, I installed a minimal part of xpirt's Sense Home bundle (Home, Service Pack, Weather) and a Sense 7 theme, and the result is pretty nice.

I just remembered, I'm a liar. I did use TB once on my Desire, and that failed miserably so I decided it's a piece of c**p app and I decided I don't need it [emoji23]
I am quite partial to Lollipop GPE roms, particularly stock roms. However if I want a long term stable rom, I always end up going back to a Kitkat Sense 6 rom as they provide the best for battery life and smoothest performance.
TB?

Have u tried NuSense7 yet? It's smoother and more dependable than any rom I've ever been on, stock sense 6 included. I'm on the Verizon version as I'm on a vzw m7, however I know @santod040 knows what he's doing with anything m7 related, and I know he has the same rom available for wwe/international m7 as well.

Ahh gotcha, I run Amplify+Greenify+Power Nap on it so I can honestly say battery drain is practically non-existent
