Is there a way to have a separate ringtone and notification volume like on some samsung phones?
The reason for this is at night I like to turn off all notifications: sms, gmail, facebook, etc... and just leave phone calls

You can use the module Xposed "Ringer and Notification Volume Unlink" (you must have rooted the phone and then you install Xopsed Installer).
You can find this module Xposed on Play Store

Just turn off the notification sounds via settings /sound /notification sound. That will apply to all notifications though, sms, whatsapp Etc.
This reminds me... Is there any good free app that will allow you to set individual tones for contacts and apps such as FB and other games that notify you when its your turn to play, etc?

You can change this setting per account without changing the system notification sound level. In the email account settings you can specify the notification bar alert, and the sound / vibrate. Set the sound to silent to mute any account.
I can't stop gmail notifications from vibrating. I do want to see gmail notifications in the notification bar up top, but I don't want those notifications to vibrate at me. Vibrating for texts and alerts from certain other apps (Facebook, Instagram, etc) is desirable, but emails don't need immediate attention. Is there any way to disable the gmail vibrations?

Gmail / 3 dots on upper right / settings / your account name / Notifications (on) / inbox sound & vibrate, change sound to silent, and vibrate off.
You'll get notification, but no sound and no vibrate.

Thanks for the reply. Is there no way to keep a sound for emails (if I have the sound on) but no vibrate (ever)?

So set the sound to something short and see what happens? If you turned OFF vibrate then it shouldn't vibrate.
I have installed an xposed module to unlink ring volume and notification volume.
It seems to work but Facebook is giving me headaches: at night I do not want to be woken up by messages etc. but I want the phone to ring for emergencies, so I put to zero the notification volume and to max the ring volume, and in making some tests I realised that for whatsapp/sms/email the notifications are indeed silent but Facebook still makes sound.
Anyone knows why?
Did you uncheck notifications in fb messenger option?

no luck...
that is annoying and very very strange...
notification volume is off, all notifications (whatsapp, sms, email, gmail) are silent, with the exception of facebook...
At nigjr I need the phone to ring and connected to internet, but I do not want notifications to ring, still I want them to arrive... this way I wake up for each facebook notification
not sure if the problem is android or facebook
could someone try on his phone?
been googling... it seems facebook is using the RINGER voljme and not the NOTIFICATION volume...
wtf!
So I finally returned from a two-year Apple iPhone 6s Plus. Got the Note 8. But I have to get used to Android again. Please help me out.
My phone is on Vibrate mode all the time.
I want the notification LED to work when I get an email in Gmail, but I don't want the phone to vibrate when I get an email. I used to be able to do this on my Note Edge, but now, I cannot get the right combination of settings to make it work on the Note 8.
I've tried different combination of settings in the Notification sections in conjunction with the settings under my account in Gmail. So far, I can only get the LED to blink if I do NOT turn on "Show silently" in the App notification section, and under my account setting: inbox sound and vibrate/sound/beep once. Even though I specifically in the same section, uncheck the "vibrate" box, the phone still vibrates when receiving an email.
Anyone has the right combo to make this work? Or this is a bug of some kind?
Thanks.
i dont think you can turn that off

I've been suffering with this since the s8+. Note hasn't been any different. Curious why the app settings get overridden.

From what I've read it's a bug, I don't want my phone to vibrate or play a notification from gmail just want the led to flash.
So I've downloaded a silent notification "sound" found in the zedge app and then choose this as a sound notification in gmail and it's working fine

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but it still vibrated because I am already in vibrate mode (even though I unchecked vibrate in my Gmail setting).
Note 8 Gmail/LED/Vibrate Issue
I think I have your answer. With the Note 8, you can set vibration intensity for notifications to 0 or the lowest setting. This basically eliminates any noticeable vibration when you receive an email yet activates LED, as long as you download silent ringer and turn both sound and vibrate on.
It's hard to understand why there is no LED on the Nokia 8, not necessarily a color one like on my trusty Lenovo P2, even a white one would do the trick for notifications...
Anyway I don't like audio on notifications so I was hoping to have the phone vibrate but that doesn't seem possible, am I missing something ? Thanks for any help !
Just turn Notification/Phone ring Volume to 0 should be vibration only

That would also mute phone rings, which I doubt OP wants.
@webvan You can manually turn of notification sounds for each app by long-pressing an app icon and tap: App Info -> App notifications -> Messages -> Sound -> None.
Thanks, yes I'd still like the phone to ring !
Will try the app by app setting.
ok so I tried that method and you can indeed dig into the notifications and when they are set to a high or above importance you can activate "vibrate" and deactivate "sounds". Thanks !

Seems crazy that 10 years into Android development there is no option to only make your phone vibrate when a notification arrives instead of making a sound !

May I ask what apps you are trying to turn off sound notifications? For Instant Messaging apps like Viber, Signal, Telegram, etc. I can easily turn the sound notification OFF and leave the vibration option ON. Some apps don't have those options simply because they don't send and/or display notifications.
It's strange to hear you can't do that. Try exploring all the options around the Notification Settings in each app.
Oops, had edited my message in the meantime! Yes I found that the trick is to set importance of the notification to high or above to get control of the sound+vibration settings. All good now!
