Hi All,
Since the past two days, whenever someone calls and I pick up the phone, the sound comes through the speaker, i.e. very high. I have to reduce that sound using the volume buttoms. This happens with only a few calls, not all. I have a screen protector on the phone, as usual.
I have restarted, reset, etc. to no success.
Can anyone suggest what the problem is?
Thanks
Are you using any sound mod?

I have done that yesterday as well. No luck. The problem still persists.
mine is like that as well. i can hear it even in the back of the phone... I checked clearsound and uncheck xloud and it got a little better but i still need to turn down the volume to people not listen to my conversation :x
when you state "speaker" you are referring to the speaker on the bottom right?
or do you mean the vibration through the back (near the camera area)?
edit: just did a test, it feels like its coming out from the speaker speaker but its not, the sound feels like its actually coming from the near back. I guess its not sealed tightly or just xperia z has really good loud earphone speaker.
No i was talking about the call speaker. Sry if i misunderstood

Hey
Ok, so I dont really know how I stumbled on this, but heres a test for you. If you hold your Z to your ear, powered up but screen off, with the phone flat to and pressing on your ear, can you hear a faint ticking sound?
Its in a quite specific area, about 2 inches beneath the sony logo, and in the centre. Strangely, if you then press the power button without moving the phone, the ticking slows down.
Again, I dont know how I 'discovered' this, and I have yet to name this new feature ; )
Timebomb?
Was it made in North Korea?

Haha, I think it might have been ya know
So is it just me or can other people hear it? Im pretty much certain Im not going mad as the ticking moves from ear to ear, so its not a faulty ear
If it's moving from ear to ear I would think it's 2 faulty ears lol... All joking aside. I have not noticed any such ticking from my Z
Sent from my C6603 using xda premium
Its not noticible in normal use, and slight ambient noise will drown it out.. But it is there if you listen carefully
..at least I think it is
Ok...im worried.....did your Z got to you at night?
Hahaha just pure fun here, but serious that ticking is normal?

Recently noticed a slight buzzing sound coming from just behind the Xperia logo on the back of the Z when you knock on it (or place it on a table). When I asked the guys at the Sony store, it turns out that all the Xperia Z models there all have that buzz when you knock on it. Can anyone else confirm if they've got this too?
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
After reading you post I tried knocking on the back at the center but no, I don't hear any buzzing sound
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z using xda premium
Really? It's not very loud so if you hit the back with your fingernails, it's almost inaudible, but if you use the meat of your fingers, it becomes distinctive. I hope it's not just my country that gets these ones...
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I tried a couple time with harder impact and I think I now understand what you were talking about. It's a buzzing sound indeed, but mine is quite minimal,(almost like you have to listen to it extremely carefully) I would say those are the sounds from the glass and the thing whatever it is contacting with.
My phone is naked without any case or shield, but I never hear these buzzing sounds ever when I put the phone on the table.
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z using xda premium
Ah yeah, that's the sort of thing mine is giving off, although mine buzzes when I put it on a table. Must be a design flaw on Xperia Z models or something
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I put the phone close to my ears and hit the screen with my fingers with a fair amount of strength. No buzzing whatsoever.
It seems to be occurring nearer to the camera lens than the Xperia logo. Where did you get yours, and when was it manufactured?

Beating the sh*t out of mine ... didn't hear any buzzing sound but now my glass is broken ...... sorry just kidding I just hear a "tick" which comes from the cameralens i assume.
No buzzing or sound on mine.

Oh actually that would make sense. It does seem like something around the camera lens is loose, so that could possibly be the cause...
Seems like there are certain ones which do have a loose camera lens and some that don't. Does anyone know if they would exchange mine for a new one if I can prove that it's a bit of a manufacturing flaw? Mine buzzes quite a lot and it's driving me crazy...
I think that the powerbutton makes the sound. Maybe it is a little bit loose?
Nah it's definitely coming from around the camera
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Me too i have a little buzz next to the camera but i think it's the camera's auto focus.annoying but not a big deal.

Well actually this is correcly designed. The cameralens is kind of "loose" because of the "focus" functionality.
Just found it a bit strange as I've never seen (or heard rather) camera lenses that have moved around within itself...

It's the autofocus. Absolutely normal, all phones have this.
Starting two days back, my Z1 receives incoming calls on external speakers instead of internal, so every incoming call starts that way. I need to manually put the call in internal speaker mode.
Unrooted, 4.3, the .290 build.

Same here, seems the priblem is latest Sony Sociallife update.
Try the following: clear cache and data, uninstall updates, deactivate app, restart. Let me know.

Well, what I did was have someone call me, and call answering was sent to external speaker as usual. During the conversation, I plugged in the headphones and call went to headphones, and then, during the call, I removed them.
After that, I had another three incoming calls, and everything went back to normal, calls were directed to internal audio, not external.
I did that, because I remember that two days ago I was using Walkman app, headphones on, and phone rang. Answered the call from phone's dialler app, and all was fine. And since then, it all started with calls to external, like the phone did not "remember" that headphones were removed.
But that is just my guess, since it seems this plugging/unplugging headphones now fixed it. But you also might be right, since it's two days ago that I've updated Socialife app indeed.
I will keep monitoring incoming calls' behavior, and if it reverts back to external, I will unistall updates, and clear cache etc.
Oh, and before doing the headphones trick, just plain restarting the phone didn't work.
Let me know if you can pinpoint more exactly the cause of all this.

u place your phone on a flat surface? if its so, than the phone is helping u to use external speaker since u r not not bringing up the phone to your ear.
This just started happening to me to, was going to post about it. Going to try some of your suggestions.

No, phone is not on a flat surface, it is happening even when I put it to my ear, the call stays on external speaker, and I have to tap the on-screen button to direct it to internal speaker.

Maybe if we clear data and cache from the phone app fixes the problem?...my problem is gone after doing the headphone trick so can anyone else try it or did anyone tried it already?

I did the headphone trick, but it didn't work for long, after three or four calls, it reverted back to external speaker.

Hello.
I tried:
Disable Sony social l./uninstall updates.
Phone cache clear.
Software repair via Sony pc compaion.
Problem not solved.
Always after phone restart, first incomming call goes to L.speaker.
So Today i tried to uninstall latest Google chrome update(28.02.2014).
After phone restart first incomming is ok- loudspeaker is disabled!
So maybe its a Google chrome problem?
So I recently just got this z1s and I am not please with the music volume. It automatically adjusts my music's volume on bass heavy songs. It is extremely annoying that I have to turn my car stereo and my phone on max to get any type of enjoyable volume. I never had an issue with my s3 doing any of the sort.
Went on a road trip last weekend and had to resort to my old s2 titanium for the trip. I've tried what I believe to be everything, and nothing
Is anyone else having this issue? If so, what are you doing about it?

They never will until it's rootable I guess. Since this is a dev forum, no real development can be done on it till you can at least root it.
Did you try unchecked all the options under settings, audio? There is skating another section in there with an equal that also has more settings to disable. I only use the settings for the external speaker.
Sent from my C6916 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I tried that as well. I've tried multiple equalizers, all ending in the same results.
Right now I'm listening to Google Play Music subscription , with max volume on my headset and handset. I'm listening to Babyface - Loneliness. It's sad that when the bass drops the entire volume is toned down. I hate it.
It's like my phone is telling me the appropriate volume to listen to. There's no problem with that really. My Samsung had that, but I was able turn that off.
My girl has the iPhone 5s. And now has bragging rights lol. Too bad I'm outside of my 14day return policy, or I wouldve waited on that HTC.
Sent from my C6916 using xda app-developers app
So you went to settings, sound, sound effects, settings and made sure everything there was unchecked? specifically clear stereo?
Also make sure normalization is unchecked under settings, sound.
One of those 2 settings gave me the same issue.
I think clear audio under settings, sound (which disables the other seeing options) also causes this issue.
Just get in the and play with the options. One of them is bound to sound right to you.

We just have to face it - this phone overall sucks. Terrible issues with 0 cares from Sony. I was pretty much scammed with this phone, and so were thousands others.
The sound quality of Sony is not bad, but I've never in my life heard a Sony device that had LOUD volume. That includes the Xperia Z1, which has a TERRIBAD speaker. It's not even two speakers, very pathetic for a 'flagship' model. I could never really get it to play loud enough. I have the exact same problem in my car - everything is quite silent and never loud enough.
Z1 is just a huge disappointment in virtually every regard, at least for me. If we have to resort to third party apps or rooting just to have a normal volume boost - things are not good. Avoid this phone if you are considering buying it.

Ye, but that's the problem. I don't have warranty
Common issue, reboot and see if that works. however it is really annoying
So they can still fix it in 5.1, right? Or it is just an hardware issue in Z like Paduretu Ionut said?
Had the problem in KK too...so i'm guessing it's hardware...
crap ;/ well so far it works well with soundabout... we will see...
