Hi. I just wonder about this.
Many times, when a new firmware comes out, after 2-3 days there are custom roms based on it, with tweaks (edited build.prop for example) and other speed mods.
Do they really improve speed? I mean seriously, if someone tests the 3-4 most known stable custom roms, based on same android version, and with the same kernel, also with the same apps on it, will be any noticeable difference in speed?
I see other devs releasing a rom after 3 days, and I can't explain what kind of tweaks could give more speed being stable at the same time.
Maybe custom roms are just modded/themed stock roms, and when there's a speed differenve it's because of the kernel inside.
Just being curious about that (also could make the choice of the rom itself easier...)
Any opinion? From your experience at least.

A mixture of both .

definately a mixture of both. They both make huge improvments over stock. in my opinion anyway
probaby karnel or speed
some costum rome improve your phone speed or karnel speed. especially visuality.

I don't need to improve my phone's karnel speed, it gets enough girls as it is.
However in my experience speed improvement and the smoothness that comes with it are mainly the process of the kernel as that controls the interaction between android and the hardware, where most performance bottlenecks happen. The ROM itself adds functionality, appearence and most important of all...stability.
At least so it appears to me.

I partially agree. I mean, if we assume stock roms are stable, custom roms can;t be more stable.
So, they provide some speed, maybe because there are not so many system apps inside, and mostly they provide some nice mods (visual and functional).
So... I've now given my HTC EVO 3D to my wife as a gift (not wrapped lol.. I just said she could have it so she has a nice phone)... and I've gone back to her old phone which is a Sony Vivaz. Now the only reason I got shot of the O2X in the first place was due to it lagging after even half a day, and the EVO 3D had 1GB of RAM and it doesn't lag at all. so.... basically.. now there is a stock LG ICS version (I assume there is looking at other threads?) has this resolved the lag? When I say lag, I mean it not even being able to play video's smoothly, and games nose diving in performance etc.
If this is the case... I'll probably be on the look-out for another O2X as I enjoyed having a nice bright screen and an HDMI port

Prior to ICS the custom rom's/kernel's lagged badly as well.. like they were out of memory.... are you 100% they don't lag? i.e. you don't have to reset your phone daily just to watch a movie or play a 3D game?
well take into account that the device only has 348mb ram? So It's a bit memory hungry but ICS performance overall is quite nice

This is not true. Do you have direct experience? What rom do you use?
I'm using 30B stock LG in Italy and I must say that I finally can touch high smoothness and fast performance.
Never found this with custom roms.

The stock fettled rom always worked best for me. I tried stock kernel and stefans kernel and some others but it didn't make any difference to the lag that happened after a random amount of time (within a day). The phone itself would be fine, just video and game performance sucked after a while. To be clear.. on a fresh restart/boot of the phone the performance was EXCELLENT... just it degraded after a relatively short time, and was the deciding factor for selling it. If this has been resolved with ICS I would REALLLLLY like to know.

I did take that into account. I found the best experience was with the fettled stock italian rom last year before ICS was released, but the phone always suffered with slow down, even within an hour of turning it on if I did something intensive like play a game or watch a video. It took half a day to a day to slow down if not doing anything intensive. It was REALLLLLY aggravating.
I do realise it has limited memory, but given it wasn't running ICS it really should have performed better for longer as such. If Tegra 2 needed more memory to continue running that that's what it should have had. It's an amazing phone (for the money) otherwise I thought.
If people who use there phone for video playback and say... playing a tegra 2 game like dungeon defenders could come in and comment on if performance degrades to getting REALLY bad frame rates after a while, I would really appreciate it. If you can go for a month or something playing games and watching video's without an issue, I REALLY like to hear about it.
@Scougar,
I'm very sorry for you.
I bought 2x on oct 2011, not for playing games as first goal, I have been happy with 20S (removing some unused system apps) for many months and now I am with 30B.
Good luck.

dont know how anyone can say that cm10 is smooth for example (havent tried stock ics yet tho), because its just so awfully slow for me, lags more than cm7, im sure its because of higher ram consumption. even with swap partition enabled. i mean it IS very smooth, when it works that is, but it quite often has these awful slowdowns for me when the phone just puts me on ignore mode lol
i mean its pathetic, cant even have 2 tabs open in chrome without having to reload the pages after switching tabs. movies and games work great tho, never had any issues, on any android version. best thing about this phone really.
Look i understand what you are saying but the weird thing is with the build from jan 2013+ the performance is just amazing..
And I never experienced a bsod nor a freeze nor a slowdown and not even a single fc i really don't knoa but some people have strange p990's or i just got myself a special one eheh.

Smoother then modded ics couse of fps and fluidity...ics and cm10 rock's on our phone, really no lag for days...

lol, sorry for me? You shouldn't be, because I 'upgraded' to the EVO 3D, on an amazing sim-free deal for it, and it worked perfectly for me, without issue and had ICS for months before LG. I'm just considering coming back to the O2X as I really loved it apart from the lag. I would prefer to use a stock modded rom so that I get full functionality rather than fast performance and missing options.
I will keep my eyes open for one.. but they are pretty expensive for such an old phone (which is weird).
I am running CM10 on the new boot loader with custom kernel and its darn near perfect for me. Smooth as butter and battery life is as good as pure CM7 ROM.

Agreed,Stock ICS lags very bad, installed CM10 and the phone is damn smooth!

No lags with stock LG ICS 30B, very smooth full functons and stable.
Maybe in some months we'll have a stable CM10.1; CM7 took at least six months to be a stable version (missing of some functions).

Hello everybody,
does anybody know how is developing Mali GPU driver going on for our Note?
I think that graphics performance was a little better in ICS 4.0.4 then in upper version... or I'm wrong?
The most important experience I've is with the 3D game Let's Golf 3: playing is not smooth then with rom 4.0.4 stock...
At the moment I'm using Angry 3.2 Rom JB 4.1.2....

One thing I've learnt through Android, performance decreases as the versions go up. Its not a maybe, its a definitely.

It's disagree entirely, I think the reverse. Kernels with latest Mali drivers way outperform normal stock drivers. Ics improved on gb, and remember that jb is still in beta and Google have already admitted to issues with display performance which they're working on, so I have no doubt jb will be even better.

AW: Mali GPU driver
Maybe the benchmark score decreases but the real performance increased for me with the upgrades. There may be some versions slower then there precursors but in general performance is growing.

Hahaha (not laughing at you just at our differing experiences) - I disagree entirely with this and think OP has a point. In fact I already made a post about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203374
Some games I don't notice much if any difference in 3D performance if any - off the top of my head examples are Dead Trigger and Riptide GP.
However for some others, for me at least, the performance difference between GB and JB firmware is huge. I'm talking about talking stuttering, uneven frame rates on JB Roms and silky smooth, consistent framerates on GB Roms. Examples are Let's Golf 3 (as already bought up), Real Racing 3 and GTA: Vice City. In fact (and I have no idea why) GTA:VC on GB plays silky smooth and at a higher resolution than JB, not sure why this is.
Concerning GTA:VC I, like many others, had issues that made it unplayable sometimes on GB based ROMS so I recently switched to Samsung Stock JB where it now plays without those issues but the performance of the game is much lower.
Its definitely true that performance other than 3D gaming is streets ahead in JB Roms when you compare it to GB of course.
One thing I haven't done is much gaming using ICS though which may explain our differing experiences.
another explanation is that the games dev havent optimized it for jb or newer drivers yet.
if thats the case its further proof of silly android hardware, os and app integration versus independant hardware layer, os on top and then aps, making apps completely hardware independant lol and overcoming the legacy crap.
I'm not sure what is this mali gpu thing but i believe it has something to do with graphic as what y'all has discussed above. I can see that my graphic performance has decreased on this JB rom(I'm using supernexus2 4.2.2) compared to ICS. When on ICS, I can play Backstab HD without any issue, but on JB rom(both 4.1.2 and 4.2.2) the graphic are too laggy and the phone itself would heated up.
Well I'm not really experiencing a lot of lag, but it's not really smooth, even my old LG Optimus 2X running CM10 is smoother than my Nexus when scrolling through menus.
My nexus really lags a lot when scrolling through documents, and on the app drawer, especially in the widgets tab. Some games like NFS and beach buggy blitz doesn't run smoothy too.
So will a custom kernel fix everything? I don't really want to install custom ROMs.. I like how stock feel and I'm kinda sick of customizing like my LG.
Did you try disabling Background sync in Google Currents?
That should help a bit.

I cleared cache, and disabled the app altogether. Still doesn't help.
Coming from stock 4.2.1 switching to dirty aokp with Franko kernel I can say I don't really notice a difference in lag. 4.2.1 never lagged for me before and I can't understand what people are talking about. Maybe it's because I never experienced the previous versions before...
You can install Beach Buggy Blitz from Market. It is free game with great graphics. Then you can see lags, with gaming. And there is no solution for this.

Lag with a specific game is not general system lag...
All of these "lag" threads all go the same place; every random direction. No coherent information is ever formed..
I too would like to figure out how to get rid of the random lags after waking the device, during IO, just random other times while using the device etc.. I'll try a kernel, maybe a custom ROM at some point, maybe I've waited too long, but I've been using the stock rooted ROM. First device I kept the stock ROM on since I got my Nexus One, at least for a while
4.2.1 here with 0 lag. Currents background data WAS enabled, but I just shut it off. Thanks for the tip.
What kind of lag? While doing what? Without a proper description don't expect too much help.
Like everyone has said it is hard to tell without more information but generally custom kernels do provide better performance overall and therefor would probably be best for covering all the bases.
Like all machines aren't created equal, I don't seem to be experiencing any kind of lag on my device, as it is buttery smooth even in stock rom. I guess your device maybe running hot?
So I installed Franco on it, and lo and behold, the device got a lot more smoother, still running stock ROM.
But the battery is taking a plunge!! No idea why. Perhaps a re charge will solve problems.
It helps quite a bit but still nowhere near the smoothness of 4.1.2. Recent Apps button still takes a while to load for example.
My stock 4.2.1 is quite smooth, even better than a lot of custom roms. A different kernel improves it a bit, but not by much.

i lag too. I think it is because of lack of ram. I always have to manually close out all apps to make things smooth again.(hulu and netflix use alot of ram)

Anyone?
Have had a lot of problems and compatibility issues, I love the options but the glitches and errors you get are just overwhelming. Plus you lose that superb camera that Sony have given us. There are some great mods you can get on aosp like double tap to wake, but at the end of the day the problems outweigh the good. Sad really as I'd love to have one of them ROMs as my daily driver and keep the goodies that Sony offer.
Problems:
Camera glitches (works after a while)
Calls hang when hanging up (some ROMs have problems making calls altogether)
battery drain, its no secret, unless you ROM is balanced, you're going to have this happen.
Certain apps don't work ( for me this was the jawbone UP app, simply didn't sync the app with the band)
Ui force closes, doesn't happen a lot, but they do happen.
There are probably more but it will depend on what ROM you choose, there's a good few of them out there, if it wasn't for the jawbone app no working I think I'd have put a lot more work into it, my favourite was Carbon ROM, it is a brilliant piece of work with a great dev in control, it isn't an official version but its been done very well and its been my favourite up until now.
Just switched back to monxs ROM, stable and it works with everything.
