I need to swap out my NC due to screen issues. I have a setup I like with NF 0.6.7 on eMMC. Is it safe to do a nandroid backup of my setup through CWM (or make images of my partitions using dd commands through ADB) to restore to my new NC? Or am I better off just starting from scratch? It's not a big deal either way, but I could save a few hours of work.
As far as I understand, Clockwork mod doesn't work as it should with Froyo. I've tried booting into a CWM bootable sd card, then swaping it out with another sd card because of storage issues. I then tried a backup and it failed to work. I kept getting errors.
If you can get CWM to backup a Froyo install please share how you did this.
You may be able to dd your eMMC partitions, then make your own CWM flashable zip to restore. How reliable this might be is above me.
All in all, it's not that complicated nor time consuming to just redo everything on your new nook.
Best of luck.

Your are probably right. Better to just set everything up again. Just hope I don't run to problems like some others have been reporting with the market, etc.
I attempted to perform a backup of NF on internal memory using CWM from SD, and it failed to work. I installed CWM through Rom Manager (rebooted immediately after flashing) because it did not install with the flashable zip. I booted into recovery via Rom Manager and performed a nandroid backup. It took about 8 minutes and produced a 252Mb backup. I have no idea how reliable it is. Perhaps I will attempt to flash back to rooted 1.1 or 1.0.1, then restore the NF nandroid before I return the NC to see if it works or not.
You actualy got CWM to boot after flashing it with rom manager to the eMMC? I've always read that, that's not possible with Froyo on the eMMC.
I have flashed at least two different backups of 2.2 and stock 2.1.
didn't do anything special.
-edit- i suppose i should mention this was with cwm on emmc.

I was a bit leery since I read about folks getting into bootloops installing CWM, but figured it was supposed to be installed with the flashable NF 0.6.7 zip, so thought how much trouble could I get into?
I also read that you must reboot immediately after flashing CWM through Rom Manager to avoid bootloops (this advice seemed related to NC's Eclair 1.0.1 or 1.1) - I have no idea if that was necessary, but figured there was no harm in following the directions.
I thought I should be able to nandroid off of the CWM running from SD (it is possible I was using Monster's CWM image, which I understand will not nandroid from SD?), but didn't have success so figured I would try flashing it to eMMC.

How were you able to make backups of 2.2? I have froyo 6.7 on eMMC with CWM flashed via rom manager and I'm completly unable to boot into it. I've tried using the option in rom manager to boot into recovery, I also tried holding menu+PWR at boot and that did not work.
I'm currently preparing to flash my first rom and have a few questions. I have searched the forums and gathered a lot of information. However, I would just like some solid answers to a few questions so that I know I'm not reading something wrong.
Some details of my phone:
PDA: XWJVB
PHONE: XXJVK
CSC:XEEJV3
Rooted with Chainfire's CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVB-CL118186 [email protected] #2
1. Can I flash any rom onto my phone regardless of what my current firmware is? If not, what type can I flash?
2. I've done a nanoid back up and a titanium backup. Am I right in thinking the nanoid backup will only be required if something goes wrong?
3. Do I need to copy the two backups to my computer?
4.When I did the nanoid backup it came up with No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Is this important?
5. When everything gets wiped off my phone will my external sd get wiped too or shall I just take that out? If not should I make a complete backup of that too so I don't lose my music and pictures etc?
Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to leave anything to chance as you can imagine. Any help would be appreciated.
1. Can I flash any rom onto my phone regardless of what my current firmware is? If not, what type can I flash?
- Flash a New 2.3.4 from samfirmware
2. I've done a nanoid back up and a titanium backup. Am I right in thinking the nanoid backup will only be required if something goes wrong?
- If you read a some guides how to flash, all will be working, its a hard to brick a SGS, but:
* If you use titanium backup: just backup your user apps
* Nandroid backup is a backup of your current system
3. Do I need to copy the two backups to my computer?
- If you want .
4.When I did the nanoid backup it came up with No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Is this important?
- Nandroid backup are safe at your internar SD, no at external
5. When everything gets wiped off my phone will my external sd get wiped too or shall I just take that out? If not should I make a complete backup of that too so I don't lose my music and pictures etc?
- Flash via Odin, just makes your phone clean. Its only wipe your current installed apps, and settings, it dont wipe a SDCard and External_SDCard, then dont worry about your pictures and music,
1) each rom will give instructions on requirements and flashing instructions, the short answer is no, you can't just flash any rom
2) the nandroid is a complete system image, similar to windows restore to a previous working version, so it is your 1st line of defense if things go wrong
3) always worth copying everything to
Your computer for safety
4) it doesn't matter, unless you format your ext sd, it won't get wiped
5) as above, and nor will your part of the internal sd, just the system part

OK thanks for your replies guys,
For example I've just looked at Juwe's Smart Edition > v5.3 ROM, the instructions state:
Code:
INSTALLATION FROM GINGERBREAD
1) Download my ROM and put it to intSD card
2) If you don't have CWM, flash some kernel with CWM support with Odin
3) Go to CWM and flash my ROM
4) After reboot go to CWM and make wipe cache and wipe dalvik-cache
So does that mean I can flash this ROM and then just use TM to restore my stuff? Sorry to be a pain but I haven't got my head around the compatibility issue yet.
I reverted from the dual poot through internal partitions.
The dualboot was set up via this topic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275859
After that I ran the revert dual boot zip and then used the customer partition setup from this thread.

Suddenly, I could only boot to cwm. No matter what boot option I would choose, cwm would load. It would let me flash roms but I could not boot into them. I eventually got around this by re-installing cwm using rom manager from a rom running on an sd card.
That created a new problem. Every time I tried to boot, it would not mount emmc. I tried installing the rom MiRaGe. This had the strange effect of mounting my sd card as emmc and my internal drive as my sdcard
I found this guide and tried to restore my partitions back to original
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25354258#post25354258
I am using the cwm from that thread as well. I am back to booting into a black screen no matter what rom I use.
Are there any suggestions on what I can do next?
Sounds like you have your partitions pretty messed up. Go to my partition repair thread linked in my signature and follow the guidance there, including doing the partition 2 repair. Do not forget to format the partitions immediately after the repair zip is run.
That swapping of emmc media and sdcard is a setting inside of CM7. It is intended for users who have no SD and want to use emmc media as sdcard.

Thank you for your help.
Here are the steps as I read it and the order in which I did it
1) Flash sd card with CWM-5.5.0.4-bootable_SD.zip
2) Copy NookColor-emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7-8.zip, NookColor-emmc-repair-partition-2.zip, and NookColor-emmc-repair-partitions-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip, and update-encore-cwm.5.5.0.4-emmc-racks.zip.
3) Boot into cwm from sd card
4) install zip "NookColor-emmc-repair-partitions-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip"
5) reboot system
6) install zip "Copy NookColor-emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7-8.zip"
7) reboot system
8) install "NookColor-emmc-repair-partition-2.zip" (This does report success)
9) reboot system
10) install "update-encore-cwm.5.5.0.4-emmc-racks.zip"
11) reboot into cwm
Now that I am boot into cmw (I took out the sd card before boot to make sure it installed properly,) I follow these steps
1) Install rom and gapps (encore_CM72-MiRaGe-09302012.zip) It reports sucess
2) Boot into black screen.
Can you tell me if I am missing a step or if I am doing one of the previous steps incorrect?
****edit - I seem to be able to install cm9.
I'll report back after testing it out.

You did everything right. You may have had a bad download of the mirage zip.
Hello I am newbie here.I know there is a thread for how to instal CWM recovery & how to flash custom roms, but I find that method very confusing . I have upgraded my phone to Gingerbead 2.3.6 using ODIN player (Build number:- DDKQ8). I have already rooted my phone using that zip file method. Now I want to install CWM recovery v5.0.2.6. Here are my questions.
1. Do I need to install CWM recovery v 4.0.0.9 first & then need to update it to 5.0.2.6 ? If so, how to do that?
2. After installing CWM, I want to backup my current OS,which is an official GB 2.3.6 update provided by Samsung for my country. How to backup it?
3.I still use 2GB sd card,so how much space is needed in my sd as well as internal memory while installing custom rom?
4.After installing new rom will my data stored in sd card (app backup files, music files, pictures etc.) get erased?
5.Please suggest me a good custom rom which has:- great battery backup, good interface, exciting features, fast response etc.)
Thanks in advance!
WellCome..
1) No, you can directly install 5.0.2.6..
2) In recovery You will get options for backup and restore..this will take the backup of your current rom and you can restore at any time through it..
3) No need to make any free space..if you are not using any ext partition..
4) Not At all..it wont touch your sd card data..
5) It depends on You,Which Rom you like..read their thread for more info of the rom..

Sorry for asking u again, I am going to flash Apocalypse final 9.7.2012 ROMhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700749 , but I have few questions. The installation procedure is as follows:-
Installation Procedure - Step 1 (rom)
1. boot into CWM5 Recovery
2. wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik
3. format cache/data/system/sd-ext
4. MOUNT DATA
5. flash APOCALYPSE-17.06.12
5. reboot and complete the setup wizard
What is mount data? I can't see that option in CWM 5 or is it suppossed to be mount/data ?
also it's a barebone ROM, so from where i can find essential apps like sms, mms, camera? also does bareback ROM contain google apps like gmail, gmaps, navigation etc. ?
Thanks in advance!
Hi everyone. This is my first HTC so I don't know much about how to flash roms. There is no external sd like my s4...My question is.... I flashed ARHD 4.1.2 with no issues since the bases are the same. But what are the proper steps needed to flash a new base? I would love to flash ARHD 10 but don't want to turn this awesome phone to a paper weight....

Backup as much stuff as you can. ARHD and TrickDroid both include an option to either Dirty Flash or Wipe the phone prior to installing the new base. I highly suggest wiping the phone through TWRP/CWM prior to installing the new ROMs, then choosing the option within Aroma to wipe the device and install. It's best to nuke the phone from orbit--it's the only way to be sure.
Please note that Aroma SUCKS and it make take several attempts before the ROM installs and it can take up to 5-10mins afterwards for the device to boot with the new ROM/base. If Aroma fails or freezes a couple times, or gets stuck--don't panic. Hold the PWR + VOL Down button in a brightly lit room for about 10-15seconds. The capacities buttons will flash for at least half of the 10-15seconds to acknowledge the command. Once the screen goes dark, release, then IMMEDIATELY HOLD the PWR + VOL DOWN button again to boot into the bootloader and then choose to go back into recovery.
with the new ARHD 10.0 it seems that file folder construction has been modified so its been recommended that you wipe your SD card and then install. so the process in short should be
back up your sdcard stuff you want to keep > reboot into recovery > wipe the phone > wipe SD card (all data) > either push ARHD 10 to the phone or you can ADB sideload the zip over >
install ARHD 10.0 > boot up > put everything you want on your SD card back.
someone chime in and correct me if i'm wrong. though that seemed like the jist of the what mike was getting at i think...

Back up the info to the OP's computer, flash ARHD10.0, then wipe SD card, imo.
It'll make the OP's life easier. But all the information in the above post is correct. Welcome to Android 4.2.2--with it's support for multiuser, your information will start getting stored under /data/media/0 as opposed to /sdcard/ which can get confusing for the end user who isn't expecting it.
Thank you so much guys for the help. One more question though. Do I make a titanium back up and store that to pc to recover my apps? If not how do I actually backup using my pc? Sorry for the noobish questions...

Titanium backup will backup your apps, you don't need to transfer this back to your PC svae son your internal sdcard
But with the steps taken above if you wipe sd doesn't that erase everything including backups?
Here's what I did:
Backup apps using Titanium > Move stuff in sdcard to pc > Wipe/factory reset phone > Install ARHD 10.0 > Format sdcard using CWM recovery > boot > move everything back to sdcard from the pc > download Titanium from play store > restore user apps > go through settings and set each stuff manually > Enjoy
Thanks I will give this a try!!

A question before I try this, I thought that if you format the sd card after installing ARHD 10.0 you would then have no operating system on your phone?
You'd lose the OS if you wipe /data/ or /system/. As long as you choose the option to wipe /sdcard/, your OS will remain.
