I use SMS backup and restore which allows backup to email, Dropbox or Google Drive. It only does SMS though, not MMS...

Serach Google for SmsImport. Very nice app.
You can use PIMbackup to backup ur sms to a local file.

Restoring contacts after Cognition 4 flash

I used Titanium Backup to do a full backup, should this include contacts?
From stock 2.1 I I did the Titanium Backup. I used ROM Manager to do a backup and then flashed Cognition 4 then used Titanium Backup to restore all apps and data but this did not include my contacts.
Can I recover the contacts with what I have or do I need to flash back to the backup stock ROM and export the contacts?
If I have to restore and export then from where do I do the export?
Thanks in advance.
Contacts are saved as part of system data and you should NEVER restore any system data with TiBu unless it was backed up using the exact same ROM, and even then there have been issues with restoring system data. Did you not have your contacts synced with your Google account beforehand?

I am not sure how to sync to the Google account. I only setup the basics so I could pay for apps. I assume it would not happen automatically and I am out of luck there?

Never mind, I went into settings\Accounts and Sync and in the settings for the gmail account I turned on sync contacts. It was not checked but after I checked it, it did indeed pull my contacts from my gmail account. I have to wonder how they got there in the first place if I never set them to sync in the first place but....
Question on the gmail account though. How do you access the account directly on the phone? Should I configure the email app with the account? I receive the occasional email on the account (say when I purchase an app from the market and get a receipt) and get the notice and access it that way but I am not sure how to get into those emails on my own.
Gmail and eMail are different. Gmail should setup just by entering your Google login info. The email app is for POP3, IMAP and other mail server accounts. You shouldn't steup Gmail as an eMail account.

How do you get into the account to read messages that are sent? Right now I can only get to it if a new message is sent to me and I get a notification. I do not know how to go back to those messages at will.
You mean Gmail? Just click on the Gmail icon in the app drawer. Same with eMail.

I did not have an icon for GMail on the stock rom but I do now with Cognition. Must have deleted it accidentally.
Thanks.

Back Ups

Back in the day when I had windows mobile, I had a program that synced my text messages, picture mail (sprint mms) and call logs to Outlook. When I upgraded to Outlook 2007 and this app ceased to function, I found a backup program that I could schedule to run each night that would backup these items to the SD card, retaining 3 days worth of backups on the card. If I forgot to restore them when I wiped, no problem the backup program could add only the new or missing ones back to the device. I would like to find a way to backup the same way with Android, does anyone know of anything like this for Android? :cyclops:

for contacts and pics you can sync with your google account.
For messages you can use sms backup & restore.
I think there is no way to sync with outlook atm.

Yes you can set schedule backup to SD card for SMS, MMS, and call log(and much more) with Titanium backup, with flexibility to select frequency as well number of backup.
Read 'How to keep device backup up-to-date' on my signature.
dr. ketan, does Titanium Backup offer the flexibility to backup the entire phone (ROM, application programs, data, pictures, videos, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your reply.
No, TB can't backup ROM/Kernel or Pictures/Video.. TB can backup application(system and user) and data of application. It needs root to backup system app and data of app(syst/user)
ROM/Kernel can be backup by Nandroid.
Use sms backup+ to backup & restore all your messages, MMS, Contacts, Call logs to your Gmail account(s). It;s Freeware.

Hi Sahilarora, I did that before and only save me all like google contacts, what I want is that when I import the contacts I don't have to combine all again.

You could always try Mobile Backup & Restore by Trend Micro (in the Play Store). You get 50MB free. It lets you back up Contacts, Call Lists, Calendar, SMS, SMS History, Pictures, Music & Video. Obviously Pictures, Music and Video will eat well into that free 50MB allowance, so you can deselect them to be backed up.
I went for it because I wanted to back up my text messages from my S2 before going onto the S3. I also backed up my contacts and calendar, but didn't need to as my Gmail account took care of that.
Thanks Carbon (now called Helium) will only backup device and not sync with outlook, same with titanium both really useful though especially titanium. I tried my phone explorer it syncs well, quite powerful, safe to use?
