[Q]: Flashing ROMS & Kernels - I don't get it - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
this is my first sony mobile phone, i'm comming from an hd2.
hd2: flashing was easy: copied a rom (.zip) to the sdcard, and then flashing it via cwm. you're done.
xZ: in the title of the rom-threads there's always something like [253] or [307], and i think "ok, it's a rom with a firmware version .253 or .307". but reading the threads i'll notice that once you flashed the rom, you also have to flash a firmware or a kernel afterwards.
so aren't the roms for the xperia z complete roms? why do you have to flash a firmware afterwards? i'm really confused...can someone please explain?
thanks & have a nice day

See the stickys, ROMs and firmware is the same thing.
From me to you.

thanks for your reply.
i've read the stickies.
but i'm still confused. thread title says "[bla][UB][253][bla] Best ROM in the World!!!!", and then inside the thread it says something like "when coming from a stock .434 rom, flash the 'best_rom_253.zip' via recovery, and then flash a new 253 firmware and a kernel of your choice to get the benefits from the 253 version."
that's confusing me. if firmware and rom means the same, why is there still a need to flash a firmware and/or kernel after flashing the rom?

You're not reading properly, you may need to be using a specific ROM in the first place to use a mod or ROM. Users generally confuse themselves.

i know that sometimes in order to flash a .253 you have to flash a stock .434 right before (and maybe root), but that has nothing to do with my question.

Only if you have a locked bootloader and want to keep root would you do that.

Question for flashing I9001

Hello,
I hope it's not the wrong section, but the others are I9000.
I want to flash an I9001. The phone is on 2.3.3 I though.
I've root the phone, now I can go to 2.3.6 by flashing a rom in recovery or do i need to go to 2.3.6 first?

You need to flash (for example) KQ7 with Odin, this updates the whole base of the rom, most new roms are build on KQ7 base so I think that's the right one for you
btw this is the wrong section, i9000 Q&A is the right section
I think we go for broodrom.
But it's important to get first to 2.3.6 stock? Or can we flash the rom directly by odin?
As an ODIN stock ROM also includes modem binaries that we cannot flash over recovery, it is a good idea to get to the latest stock ROM with ODIN and then start with custom ROMs over FeaMod recovery (it's basically CWM). If you have already the latest stock ROM on your 9001, you can use whatever method you prefer.
I think recovery is quicker and easier to use as you don't need a pc near you.
And which last stock 2.3.6 we can flash the best? We live in Holland..., don't know it is important?

[Q] IMEI goes AWOL with deodexed XXLK3 UK Firmware.

Recently i have come across a puzzling bug when i flashed deodexed UK firmware S5830IXXLK3 (by Alucard1989PL) and was wondering if anyone else had come accross this,
I flash my phone via ODIN 3.07 to stock XXLK3 UK firmware as normal , this gives me stock kernel & ROM.
I fire up ODIN and flash either Rafael or Hells kernel (it doesnt matter which), reboot, check phone status and i have IMEI.
I root my phone via CWM next just to make sure and check that debug is ticked, reboot.
I then flash the S5830IXXLK3 deodexed ROM via CWM, no problem. When the phone boots i check the phone status and each time i have lost my IMEI number.
On all previous deodexed ROMS i have used i have never come accross this, could it be the latest firmware thats been deodexed or am i overlooking a simple detail here?
Any comments would be appreciated.

I haven't problem with IMEI. The deodexed rom has already root so i don't know why you installed root before you install my deodexed xxlk3 rom -_-" LOL. Try reflash rom with odin than my deodexed rom and at last custom kernel . . .

Hey Alu, i tried all methods but result is the same i lose IMEI number, not to worry for now i will try another deodexed. BTW any eta on when you will release 15 toggle for XXLK3? this will motivate me to try again.

Hi Viprdxd, I have also just experienced this problem after flashing the same XXLK3 UK firmware and then flashing a custom deodexed ROM that I am currently building. My custom ROM is currently based on XXLI1 firmware and I thought there may be some incompatibility problem. However obviously you have flashed Alucard's XXLK3 deodexed ROM so it can't be that. You say its not a kernel issue either so at the moment I currently have very little idea what is causing this. I need to find out though to make my custom ROM compatible with all firmwares so I will be investigating this issue.
I'm just glad I got my IMEI back by reflashing the XXLK3 firmware with ODIN cause I've already permanently lost it once before when I was a bit of a noob and didn't have a backup or anything!

Yeah I know that feeling all to well when you see your IMEI number missing I'll keep playing around to see if I can find out why but my feeling is its an issue ROM side with XXLK3., Hey good luck with your ROM I'll defo check it out when its done.

Nice one thanks :good:
Edit: Sorry Actually I still can't figure this out, if I flash XXLK3 with ODIN, IMEI number is fine. If I install Rafael's kernel, nothing else, it disappears.
If I extract the XXLK3 ROM and flash it in recovery no problems, if I deodex it no problems, if I install custom kernels then IMEI dissappears.
Which leads me to the conclusion its a problem with custom kernels except for the fact that if I flash the ROM I'm building on stock kernel IMEI also dissappears!! So for now it remains a mystery!

I have concluded that its not a problem with XXLK3 or The custom Kernels as both work, let me explain, XXLK3 standard and deodexed on stock (came with package) kernel works as it should. Raf's or Hell's Kernel works fine on every other firmware.
It seems to be a problem of compatibility of the two maybe Samsung changed some small detail or a tweek is needed in the kernels or both? I don't know as I am not a dev.

[Q] More details about flashing

Hi, everyone. I believe these questions are not covered in this forum yet.
Is it possible to just flash kernel from FTF file?
Is it possible to convert or package kernel (IMG / ELF) file to FTF file?
If above 2 are possible, does that mean that kernel can be flashed from flashmode instead of Fastboot mode & thus eliminating the need to unlock bootloader?
Are the firmware & kernel of Xperia T / TX / TL / V interchangeable?
Is there any risk trying to flash other firmware or kernel or anything that is not compatible?
Is there any risk trying to flash kernel (IMG /ELF) file & custom ROM with locked bootloader?
Is flashing stock advanced kernel equivalent to flashing stock kernel?
I believe these questions are worthwhile to be added into the All In One thread as well.
Appreciate for the knowledgeable input from u all. Thx in advance! =)

These questions have been answered
1) yes, stock only
2) No
3) No, to flash custom kernel you need fastboot, hence you need unlocked bootloader
4) No, but you can try and see
5) There is always a risk when you flash something to your phone.
6) No risk, because without an unlocked bootloader it wont work*
7) No, Stock advanced kernel is a custom kernel based on stock with cmw and a few other things incorpprated, whilst stock kernels are stock kernels.
EDIT
* from number 6) you may soft brick the phone, but just flash a stock based rom back and it will work again. The problem will be with flashing a rom that needs a custom kernel that our phone will not support because you have a locked bootloader.

Thank u so much for ur answers. Sorry for didn't manage to find them. =)
1 - 4. My questions arose are bcoz that in order to root firmware later than 7.0.A.3.195 needs to downgrade to 7.0.A.1.303. However, I'm owning a Xperia TX, which having the firmware of 7.0.A.3.197 & the earliest firmware I found for Xperia TX is 7.0.A.1.307. That's why I am not sure whether Xperia T's 7.0.A.1.303 firmware works on Xperia TX.
5. Well, what I mean is additional risk from usual flashing. =)
7. If that's the case, does installing CWM recovery with the phone rooted but locked bootloader resulting in a custom kernel?

1-4) The 303 and 307 firmware are basically the same FW. 303 for the T and 307 for the TX. also 195 is for the T and 197 is for the TX.
5) If you flash something that is not compatable then you can either get various results ranging from no apparent bugs, to slightly buggy formware, to soft bricks or inthe worst case a hard bricked phone.
7) No, installing recovery is seperate to having a custom kernel with recovery incorported within it.

5. Hard-brick. Does that mean the phone is irrecoverable any more? In what case would result in this condition?
Oh yea, another question. In this case, downgrading the firmware is required to root the phone. So, does downgrading the kernel only, but not the firmware possible to give the same effect?

I had read that for some other devices (I think Xperia P) flashing just the old kernel, then rooting then flashing the new kernel works to keep root without flashing system folder or anything else. Give it a try, worse case you just flash again full ftf and start over.

Happy New Year, guys! Thx for the answer. I've tried just flashing the kernel. Doesn't work. Succeeded rooting after flashing the whole firmware. =)
Anyway, now I'm stuck in the process of upgrading the firmware. I can't seem to find a stock ROM for Xperia TX (LT29i) 7.0.A.3.197 firmware. I just gone through all the hard ways to create a stock ROM myself & successfully flashed it. Perhaps bcuz of the improper build, my WiFi can't be turned on & there might be other problems coming up later.
Now I am also worrying that would it cause any prob to my phone. I followed this guide to create the ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931189
& I took the META-INF folder from this custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040989
Plz kindly help that if there's any resource to the stock ROM or any way to fix this, as well as have a look if there is any side effect from flashing that ROM. Many thanks! ><
Wifi not working is because you have to copy and rename the /system/lib/modules/prima/prima_wlan.ko file to just /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko
I use this for making my own versions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246

Really? That's all? There's no other side effect from the way that I built the ROM? Am I building ROM with a proper way?
Do I've to keep the original file at the original location? Why is it that we need to modify this, just wondering?
Btw, I heard that there's a prob with MAC address with this method from another forumer. Is this true?

[Q]-Want to build from the new firmware ;)

Hi, Oxydeme in here,
Today I'm writting cause I flashed the Gnome rom via CMW on an XperiaZ with Unlocked Bootloader.
The rom is working fine but I just couldn't keep my recovery and I just can't get it back.
This rom is not what I wanted, I just wanted to try it out, but now the rom is boring,
My phone isn't recognized anymore via FT and can't proceed to a PCC update as the flashmode isn't recognised correctly..
I even tryed to flash an other rom via Flashtool in flashmode but can't flash anything unfortunately,
The fact is that I can't flash any CMW recovery or TWR on the Kernel of this rom (that replaced the DooMKernel -and I just don't really know why)
Is there any Recovery for this Kernel?
(The Kernel that replaced DoomKernel is:
3.4.9-gd3b6d0c-00010-gd6a906d-dirty

Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance,
Oxydeme
EDIT: As I'm new in the Xperia Z threads (before I used to be in X8 threads but not so active)
Can someone teach me how to build from a Sony(tm) firmware?
Extract boot.img from any cm rom( pac, vanir, 4.3 / 4.4 ) then use fastboot method to flash boot.img to phone.
then after flashing, boot the phone str8 up to recovery mode and do your stuff there.
i was a victim too.
Thanks bro but I used after thinking a bit - why the flash wouldn't work on another computer? -
an other solution,
As I couldn't do anything with my first PC, I decided to try to flash on another computer (On Win8
this time the first one was on Win7) and I don't really know why but when I tried on the second one,
it worked so I flashed a generic ftf in order to get stock rom and then, could do every stuffs again,
whithout problem (Rooting, CMW, and then install another Kernel and I'll see for a custom Rom)
___
Do we have to flash a recovery on every new rom?
___
How can we know if X-Rom will work with Y-Kernel? (Compatibility question )
___
Anyway, thanks a lot
Cheers, Oxydeme.

If the rom includes a boot.img with recovery in it. You would already have recovery with the rom. Some rom comes with dual recovery like existenz rom. And for stock based rom, you can either use stock kernel, doom kernel or xzkernel Zk. For cm/aosp, you can use stock cm kernel or meow kernel.

You don't need to extract it, just double click on the .zip file will able you to see the files inside

Want an anecdot? I bricked my Xperia Z twice today, once when flahsing a rom - stuck at sony logo...- second time was a false manip I just needed to power off the device insteed of rebooting it (what I forget) -then this time, stuck at BL- the method I did the first time I got an error, works in any case
So everytime I get stuck somewhere, I change my computer and flash something x)

I'm gonna ask NUT if I can edit his realeased Sony(TM) rom in order to make something interesting, but I just don't know how to,
So, my question is as firstly mentioned on this post,
Can someone learn me how to mod in Android?

[Q] eXizistenZ ultra 4.0.0 bootloader

I am new to rooting and stuff.
So recently I bought Sony Xperia SP C502 .
The current firmware version is 12.1.A.1.205 .
I want to root my phone and install eXistenZ 4.0.0( rom based on stock rom )
My bootloader is locked.
Bootloader unlock is allowed.I don't want to unlock the bootloader.

Root it using app called towel root
Install super su not from play store
Install busybox installer from playstore

Steps for Switching Rom
I am currently using Cm11 on sony xperia sp, I have a unlocked BL and root access.
I would like to switch to a new custom rom now like XperianZe. I tried also, and in the process i bricked and also had a bootloop.
Can anyone please explain the detailed steps to do a fresh install to a new custom rom like XperianZe.

Just follow the mentioned instructions in the respective thread. And as for Xperianz as you mentioned, you have to read this post.
Based on the post, it seemed the installation is straight forward. What makes you have a bootloop? Did you flashed the kernel mentioned in the thread via fastboot?

yes, you guessed correct. i tried flashing the kernel. And the phone didn't start at all.. not even power up.
Later i read a post in XDA, in which it was described that i should do a hard rest by pushing the hole button at back and then try to boot.
Tats when i got boot-loop. I again flashed the custom kernel (DooMLoRD) and did installed CM11 again using CM recovery. Then the phone booted cm 11.
I followed this link and tried doing so. which resulted in phone not powering up and then boot-loop.
So now if i install Xperianz ROM following instruction in this link, it should be working properly correct?
Am sorry if am asking dump questions. Now am a bit scared to try to switch to this cutom ROM as i may end up bricking the phone again. The thing is I really don't want to mess it up again.
I am new to rooting n playing around with custom ROM. CM11 was my first try and was a success in first go.
Thank you for helping me.

I am concerned about how you flashed the kernel. How did you flash the kernel provided in the thread? Did you use adb or FlashTool?
If you want to try any other you can use Existenz as it require only the stock kernel.

I used FLashtool to flash the kernal.
If my understanding is correct, As of now i am not on stock kernal. When instaling CM11, I flashed the kernal of DoomLord for getting CM 6. recovery.
If this is the case should i flash the stock kernal first and then give a try for Existenz?

Well Existenze require most Sony things out of the box, so you'll first need to have Stock ROM in place before flashing it's ZIP. I've dug through the Xperianze thread for you and seemed like your problem is not to be found in the thread. If you really want to try out Xperianze, you might want to flash the kernel via fastboot using adb, rather than Flashtool.
