Zip & Xap coruption in windows 8
I can zip. I can rename to xap and I can send to my phone and it works but when I try and extract I get error this is causeing a lot of headache and is happening on more than one zip file I have tried both versions of 7zip and WinRAR with no avail. searched the internet for days on end I cant figure out why this is happening.
OK, basic bug reporting steps here:
1: summarize the problem. All I got is that it has something to do with zips, xaps, WP8, and Win8.
2: explain what you're trying to do, what the expected result is and what actually happens (the screenshot helps with, but does not replace, this step).
3: give the steps to reproduce the problem. Do it as actual steps, not a run-on sentence with no details. For example, how are you sending the file to your phone?

Okay this really has nothing to do with my phone. other than the fact that zip's can be turned in to xap files.
lets say I have a folder with some pictures in it I right click on it and hit add to archive ok now folder is zipped.
then I try to unpack it but I cant because its corrupted.. I can not extract the file or a pic I get this error.
I Have found only one other person having this error on 7-zip forum and he says in only one post he fixed an error he was having with his zip by turning off IDM. I honestly don't see how that's related.
I have lost files due to this error.
If you copy the file off the PC, can you open the archive on another machine?

OK so.
I take a folder, 7zip it to .zip
renamed .zip to .xap
Extracted file just fine, windows 8 x64 pro.
Soooooooooooooooooooo...update your 7zip?
Not even sure why you're asking this in a phone forum, but did it work to extract the files on another machine? The fact that sending XAPs to the phone wors suggests that the problem is with the decompressor on your PC, not the compressor.

I HOPE SOME SERIOUS ANSWER WILL BE GIVEN
I guess i'll try to answer this one. I can imagine some of the big guys here get sick and tired of ansering the same question over and over... and over... and over... and...
So i'll do my bit and with the very little knowledge i have will try to explain how I fixed it after reading wiki. Maybe some people are just not used to forums and how things work, maybe some people aren't skilled enough with the english language to figure it out themself. Of course, some people are just lazy
1: download the ROM file you want to use. Often rar-ed or zip-ed so extract the .exe file from the compressed file.
2: use winrar to extract the files from the .exe file. (so don't just double click the .exe file, but left button and then extract to "folder name"
3: download this file: ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel/Tools/MaUpgradeUt_noID.zip
4: extract MaUpgradeUt_noID.zip into the same folder you just extracted the files from the .exe file.
5: run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe and follow instructions.
Good luck.

I don't think there is a phone that can use zipped files right out of the box, so you should first unpack the content of the zip, as you would do it on the PC.

pretty sure I've been opening ZIP files on my X1 via the default File Manager without any 3rd party software.
Although I'm guessing the original poster is getting confused between CAB and ZIP because Windows XP likes to treat them as the same.
I'v a question! Please help.
Well, if .zip file contain .cab or .exe then the procedure is lay down.
What in the case of zip files of theme or clock contain only .png file in that.
I mean, how to use such zips??
For more clarity to my question please check attachment enclosed & explain me, "In case I want to install that clock on my WM, how to proceed??"
Thanks in advance!!
You don't use the .zip, you have to copy those .png images into a specific folder.
Or maybe you downloaded the source images, i don't really know, i never installed a new clock theme or something.
Where do you have this file from?
Hello, I can download the hard spl just fine, but when I go to extract it windows won't let me. I have windows xp sp3. Ive goolged the problem but I can not find a solution that works, So please, pretty please, can some one help me with this problem?
what kind of an error message are you getting when you say "windows doesnt let you"? are you able to extract other zip files normally? perhaps your download was corrupted and u need to redl the file
The error says " This file is potentially unsafe file type.exe" and then it proceeds to tell me that I shouldn't open the file if its receved from email attachement or an untrusted source. And then it asks if I want to open it any way. So I click yes and i get this message " Winzip was unable to extract (file name here). exe, terminating operation.
The download is good. From what I have read online when googled is that windows thinks its a virus and won't let me extract the file. I've tried some work arounds like emailing it to myself but that doesn't work. It won't even let me open the attachment because it's being flaged as a virus.
I'm wondering if some one can send me the file the unziped. You know, unpacked. That should work from there im hopeing. but anywho, I'm at a loss as is what to do about this. I'm just dieing to try this new rom out but I can't flash my bloody fone. Got any ideas?
Edit.... Yes I can extract and unzip other files normally, sorry forgot to mention that.
Is there any reason not to temporarily dissable your AV software, extract the stuff you need and then reenable it?
this is a known issue where anti viruses report the hardspl as a falsely positive nothing to worry about.. read the flashing guide im sure its somewhere in there. disable ur antivirus and continue, reread the guide; ensure ur battery is charged at least 50% or more. dont forget to reenable ur antivrius later
Please post in the existing thread.
P.S. the answer is already there.
Thanks
Dave

XAP file is simply a zip file, so open with Windows Explorer or WinZip, WinRar, etc..
Well, unless it's a .XAP from the store. Then it's a Windows PlayReady container full of DRM-encrypted data which *probably* decrypts to ZIP format (but might not).
We can't open those at this time (except by having the phone install them, obviously).

i couldnt do that so simply ?
did you try it anytime ?
LOL, yes, with 1200 posts (including possibly *the* most popular one on this whole forum section) and 850 Thanks, I'm quite sure @anaheiim knows of what he speaks.
You, on the other hand, are almost certainly trying to open a .XAP from the store, didn't read *MY* post for some reason, and also didn't do much searching or other forms of research before beginning. As I said, Store XAPs are encrypted with PlayReady DRM, and we don't currently know how to decrypt them.

I don't think that's too big to post without compressing -- just attach the file.
Are you using Windows on your PC?
Did you copy "recovery.log" to your PC?
Did you look at "recovery.log" in a text editor?

When I asked those questions, I had no interest in seeing the log file. I wanted to pursue what I thought were strange problems doing something that should have been simple.
Spiralling out from the middle, I didn't understand the "file not found, or no read permission". I wanted to pin down whether Windows Explorer was manipulating a file on your phone, which might (although I don't know why) explain the problem.
I asked about you looking at the file just to get confirmation that you had succeeded in copying the file to your PC.
Maybe it has something to do with where you put the file. The context menu option to compress a file is convenient, but gives me no control. (I think it was quite nice in Windows XP; not so nice in Windows 8 or 10.)
The way I remember it, you select the files, but you can't tell it where to put the ZIP file. Maybe the way you copied the file from phone to PC had enough privilege to put it where you put it, but later, in Windows Explorer, you did not have enough privilege to put the ZIP file in the same directory. (And maybe the error message is less than accurate, and it is not "Read" privilege that is lacking.)
If you want to pursue the ability to make ZIP files:
move the file somewhere else and try again. I don't know exactly where you put it the first time, so I can't suggest a clearly different and safer choice. I would think that the personal directory Windows wished on you (maybe C:\Users\Aquiladroid) would be safe.
Look into 7zip: There's a free version. It has both Windows GUI and command line "apps".
{Mod edit: Quoted post has been deleted}
This thread was a sidebar to another thread, to avoid cluttering the other thread with material I thought was off-topic.
You do not describe your 7 GB file, or what you consider "not very effective". Not all files compress "well" (to me, large reduction in size). I expect 7zip has options to control the trade-off between time spent compressing, and amount of compression achieved.
You should start a new thread, asking for advice. There are a lot of people who will notice a new thread, but who do not "watch" this thread.
