WiFi Dropouts & Issues - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having read around the forums, it seems that wifi problems seem to be an issue.
What are the symptoms people experience? I never had any issues for the first few months. My Wifi will show as connected and I'll have no connectivity (even though it's showing the wifi icon) shortly after it will lose the icon, go on 3G and then connect back to wifi thus repeating the cycle every few minutes.

The WiFi drop when the wifi range is low.Happens to me right now. :/
The WiFi fix by gm007 fixes that issue.(root needed)

Wifi drop fix without any battery drain.
But it got fixed in update 253.
I'm running 307 now and there are no drops in wifi.

I'm on 307 and still getting constant dropouts.

Sometimes me too. Running .253

Actually i started getting wifi drops once again on 307, so i used the mod mentioned above and it got solved.
The OP of the thread i mentioned says there are new drivers for wifi available for XZ so hopefully they get solved in the next update.
But my wifi is pretty good with the mod applied so no worries.

[Q] Suffering poor WiFi performance? - Lets compare!

Hello guys,
do you also suffering from low WiFi reception like mentioned on the following sources:
Thread in Official Sony Forum
[...]but the real kicker on the SP is WiFi reception. Abominable, horrifying, atrocious -- all valid words to describe the range at which it'll stay connected. We assume Sony will be able to address this with some kind of future firmware tweak, unless the antennae were lifted from the back of a truck in Shenzhen in 2007. When connected, the signal remains solid, but at 20 feet away from a router with one wall in its path, it's incredible to see it just about maintain a connection.

It would be great if you could do some comparison of signal strength between Xperia SP and another phone on the same location and post the signal strength of both. You can see signal strength with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer
Thank you!
For me the range isnt that important, it's the fact that the wifi suddenly turns off by itself and it wont reconnect even though I was standing beside the router. I had to forget my home wifi then reboot the phone to get it to work again. Sony really needs to work on their software

The range kind of sucks, but the speed is unaffected. Would be nice if it can be improved though. Never got disconnected before.

I faced same problem as javidben. There is no problem with wifi range. I get almost full signal 10 ft away with 2 walls in between.
The problem is random disconnections. When disconnected, the phone remains disconnected from wifi anywhere between 2 mins up to 15 mins, for no apparent reason. When I just visit Wifi settings, it re-connects to the wifi network immediately. Very irritating indeed, having to do this from time to time.
Also, sometimes when I checked on my wifi router, I saw two entries (having same MAC address) for my Xperia SP in the 'connected devices' section. I was thinking this might be a router problem, but my Note 2 connects fine to the same router without any of these issues.
I'm connecting to 802.11n and I haven't experienced any problems with range, disconnects or throughput on my XSP.

I have the exact same problem on my Defy+ running Android 2.3.7. I always thought this is an Android bug. So I think It comes from the power saving function (see Wi-Fi sleep policy) not working properly all the time and is not a device specific problem. Am I right?
On the other hand Sony has implementied its own power saving function (Stamina mode), so I expect this should not happen if Stamina mode is turned on.
Greetings
Benny

I turned on Stamina mode, and tested over a period of 12 hours, using it intermittently, and disconnections are not happening any more
My Note2 is connected to Wifi all the time, but I did not see any disconnections, so looks like it may not be a generic Android problem.
I'll try this stamina mode and post here the result, also Xperiancing wifi dropp off,

I'm trying the stamina mode, too.
Let's hope that this will solve the problem.
But of course, it's wierd that stamina mode can make wifi more stable, because stamina mode auto turns off wifi when phone is in standby mode...

Probably your router firmware or settings, I used to have lots of problems with android devices having weird problems with wifi, bought a new router and they all started working fine

My SGSII and SGSIV have not any problem with the same router. Besides, whether or not I 'd buy a new router, I couldn't ask cafes and other access points change their router just because xperia sp has wifi issues...
I have absolutely no problem with signal strength or deconnection.
I'm using my phone on different routers (home, work, friends, ...), no problem at all.
Xperia SP C5303.
there was a little issue with the wifi network on .211 fw
but upgrading to .284 solved it. now i have full bars everywhere. :good:
For me, I am facing exactly the same problem as some of you. The range sucks, I am only 15 ft (5m) away from my router with a door, and I get 0-1 bars only
Secondly, the WiFi does switch off randomly, but when I go to the settings and check, it connects again.

dams SONY same probleem
my SP laggy and disconnected.
Seems like it's common problem then, I thought it was just me..
The Wi-fi seems to be really wonky on the SP, I've tested it sitting on the stairs beside my router for a while and it fluctuates between full and 2 bars of signal is less than a meter distance..
I've also experienced random disconnects but I think that's something to do with Wi-Fi power saving of some sort turning it off when it doesn't think you're using it.. Even if you're mid conversation with someone on whatever social media site or IM app...
Hopefully it can be fixed by Sony pushing a software update, which if it can I assume will be pushed with the next iteration of Android.

In the sony website says .257 is the latest version for Xperia SP.
And this .284 is a original fw?
Thanks.

Nexus 6 WiFi issues

Well I've recently started getting issues with the WiFi connection.
I'm sitting a few feet away from my router and should be getting full signals. But what I really get is full signals for a second, then 1 signal, then 2, 1 again, and then the WiFi disconnects and then reconnects.
I'm able to browse the internet fine ( with small breaks when it disconnects and reconnects ) but my phone has started to heat up. I've noticed it only heats up this much when using WiFi.
Any fixes or causes for this problem ?
Your Wi-Fi router is compromised. Do a Google search for chameleon. That's all I can tell you do to NDA.
Ya I agree router issue I had similar problem were I would drop wifi signal at home and had to restart phone to reconnect... Exchanged router and all is well.... AT&T n6 stock

I'll check this out. Thanks.
I agree with others. Definitely a router issue I'd say. No problems for me.

When the phone had root access, you could change the WiFi interval.
I changed it with the build.prop editor. I changed the value of wifi_supplicant_scan_interval from 10 tot 200.

[Q]Suddenly losing WIFI connection when phone is idle

Hello.
I am using my I9000 for a good while now and i am running cm11-20150901-SNAPSHOT-XNG3CAO3G0-galaxysmtd. Everything was running fine so far, but suddenly for some days now, the WIFI connection somehow gets lost when it's idle.
When this happens (and i don't know on what timeframe it does) and i activate the phone (pressing the home button) the WIFI symbol is either shown and then disappears or is already gone - but then after some seconds comes back and WIFI is on again.
Yes, i do have the setting for standby WIFI on always, so this should not happen.
Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem here?
Also i do have a fritz.box 7390 which supports a 5GHZ network - does the I9000 support a 5GHZ wifi? Maybe it's the router that's causing the issue an switching to the 5GHZ might fix it - but so far i could not see the network when it's on 5GHZ.. So i guess it's not supported but thought i might ask anyways...
Thanks!

Dodgy wifi

Has anybody had any problems with their WiFi not connecting? My device seems to fail to connect to wifi after a couple of days and just sits trying to connect. Toggling WiFi doesn't seem to resolve it, and I have to reboot the entire phone to get it back online.
No problem here.
Connects very quickly, never seen it fail to connect, even on my works dodgy BT homehub 3, which used to tie my old Z3 compact up in knots..
Yep.I thought that Snapdragon 835 cause this problem. Xi oami 6., ZTE z17 and Op5 had the same question with WI-FI connection.

I have a sd835 s8 and I haven't had any wifi issues whatsoever since launch. It's a sample size of 1, but I don't know if it's truly due to the sd835
I haven't had any WiFi issues. In fact my WiFi connections have improved using the XZ1 compact over the X performance (the X performance dropped its WiFi connections 3 times during my data transfer to the new phone)
I've had my XZ1c for about a week now (European model) and it connects to my home network (5G) normally. Signal strength is fine, although the galaxyS6 it replaced definitely had superior reception. I do have wifi issues, but only when already connected to the network. When the phone is asleep (screenlocked) it seems to lose an active connection. The wifi connection should be on at all times, even asleep. It will show the wifi symbol, but data apps don't load, and it will have lost the connection as remote for spotify connect (playing on my reciever). It will also switch to mobile data at random times with normal wifi signal strength (even though I toggled this function off in the developper settings).
I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed through system updates. I haven't seen any forum posts with similar problems though, so I'll try to document what is actually happening before I contact Sony support.
I bought the US version and flashed the UK firmware to get the fingerprint reader to work. No issues whatsoever with this phone. No Wi-Fi issues, overheating, signal strength, battery, nothing. Everything works just perfectly.
Same issue here. Mine is Europe (NL) version. The upload and download speed can be very unstable. And especially when I take it a bit far way, even you see that it's connect to the wifi with full signal strength, it said internet is unavailable.
I'm not sure if this related to the system update of last weekend or not.
Further to my issue. My phone will drop wifi connection and repeatedly try and connect - it usually cannot see any other networks at the time. Restarting the wifi on the phone, or rebooting the access point do not help. Running a packet sniffer on the LAN shows no activity, which indicates the issue is to do with wireless handshaking.
The problem occurs every few days and the only way to resolve it is to reboot the phone, which fixes it instantly.
I contacted Sony and they told me to do a complete reset on the phone, this didn't work. I updated my findings and pointed out that it's seems to be a firmware compatibility issue. Of course, you only get to talk to first line, and as a reset didn't work, they want me to send it off for a warranty repair (which of course will be returned with "no fault found" as no doubt their wifi will be different enough for it not to have been picked up on day 1 testing).
I'm currently trying to gather a bit more information on the fault, e.g. does it only happen on my home wifi etc. I've disabled channel bonding but that didn't help, and I've not jiggled my DHCP settings after seeing plenty of posts describing wifi problems on Oreo for other phones.
It doesn't happen frequently enough and I don't have the time to delve deeply into the network to identify the cause.
One interesting thing was that it went funny at home, but it was working when I got to work. When I got home it still couldn't connect. So I suspect it's to do with a particular compatibility issue somewhere.
no problem here conecting to 5 and 2.4 wifis...

I haven't gotten around to this yet. Do you still have wifi calling and volte available?

So far my wifi has been fine...
Mine is worst, i couldnt get it to connect at all but all my other device including xperia xa, xzp, laptop, Ps4 PS3, everything connect without any issue whatsoever, already excahnged once and still the same.
Think mine is struggling with either a single access point or VLANs. I need to dig further, but that requires buying a new AP - this phone is getting more and more expensive!
exactly same issue as Dashers describes with my XZ1c. I am not watching it closely, but it seems that it is hapenning after around 2 days online. Never happened before on same network with my previous Z3c, which had run months without restart and any problems whatsoever (till its display died

I have more or less the same issues, and a reboot always solves it. It happens with both routers form ASUS and Draytek.
Additionally I see issues with Spotify connect dropping or not being found on my Sonos (hardwired to LAN), but not so much to Chrome Cast Audio on the same network.
I don't have a problem connecting to wifi, but I seem to have a different issue. Even though wifi scanning is toggled off in settings, my phone still seems to be scanning according to Battery Historian. I think this is one of several things contributing to my high idle drain. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, wifi and BT scanning are both turned off in settings and have been since the beginning, but both seem to be happening anyway according to Google's Battery Historian tool. When I go back in to see if they've been toggled on by an app or something, they still appear to be off.

I have this exact problem. One second its 100% signal and is workin as expected. The other second it just drops and tries to reconnect like crazy. I have even had moments when i am unable to find my wifi after said disconnect. All my other devices is working like normal on my wifi. Using Asus n66u 5ghz.
I have been having the same issues as mentioned above with my XZ1 compact(european). My issues with dropping wifi signal seems to be happening when there are two different wifi signals to choose from. They are both on my local network. One is an extender due to the size of my house. When it can detect both signals, it can't make a decision on which one to choose. Once I remove a device(forget wifi device), it stays connected to the other with no problem. Since it isn't trying to compete with the other.
Has there been any improvement on this issue?

Wifi constantly dropping after 58.1.A.5.441 update [w/ workaround]

My XQ-AT52 (dual sim HK) became unusable after recent 58.1.A.5.441 update. Wifi constantly connects - disconnects every few seconds, and after several tries, it gives up then nothing would show up in wifi list. Tried airplane mode/reboot/factory reset/software repair and no luck.
After hours of desperately poking around settings and google, a weird workaround was found: turn on hotspot first, then connect wifi like usual. It keeps connected and fully working until the second hotspot gets turned off. I guess maybe an overly aggressive battery-saving rule was introduced in the update, wrongfully shuts down normal wifi connections and got overridden by hotspot. But I can't find any proof in logcat.
Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update.
Edit:
Upgrade to 58.1.5.474 did NOT fix this problem.
Upgrade to 58.1.5.530 and problem fixed.
I'm having a related issue with Xperia 5 II (XQ-AS52 Dual), seemingly since the same update 58.1.A.5.441.
For me the problem is that 5GHz networks work fine for around one day, then they get disconnected for no apparent reason. At this point, 5GHz networks won't show up in the list of Wifi networks until I restart the phone. Then I can see and connect to 5GHz again but the same problem re-occurs after around one day. Really annoying !
No issue though with the 2.4GHz networks apparently.
I wanted to downgrade to the previous firmware to confirm my suspicion, but can't find it on the web for my region (EU).
