i think is because of premature software ( macro distance 5cm instead of 3cm for example)
htc promised that will solve in future update all camera issues

Where does it say that? Could you provide a link?
I'm also having trouble with my camera. When I try to take an Image (default settings) the image gets blurry 7 out of 10 times.
It is also nearly impossible to focus manually. The phone is trying to focus on the selected spot, I can hear that, but the image remains blurry.
I really like this phone but it really is driving me nuts.
Can anyone else confirm having the same problem as me?
Regards

Do you have pictures to show ?

it tries to focus, in fact focuses but then returns blurry!
in the macro is a heartbreaking thing

Htc one camera good... Sorta...

Ok.. If it is me, i apologize..
But my htc one takes awesome photos outside in natural sunlight... Dope!.. However... Inside pics in regular room lighting is terrible...really terrible.. Terrible to the point that i am praying it is a known issue! I love this phone, and do not want to return it within my 14 days at tmobile, but if there is no workaround or known update for the camera coming soon i might have to...
Is 4.2.2 suppose to fix this? Samples are coming...
Low light photography is what the one is actually renowned for

[Q] Blurry shots at night

Hey guys, I have problem with photos at night,or dark conditions. They all are blurry. I mean, I have Galaxy S4 ,S3 ,Note 2 and when is night, tap on the screen means, light on camera turn on and object at dark is focused. While HTC One cant do it. Tap on the screen at dark does nothing and photo is blurry. Is there any solution how can I do perfect photos like Galaxy series? I also tried Camera FX ,but its the same. Still cant focus with light
Maybe is user error. Simple as just not doing it right. If not we need more info than that... Like come on how can I help you when all you say is "I'm a newbz and mah camera won't focus"?
Give me rom, kernel, camera app settings and maybe someone would be nice enough to help you.

All stock, not rooted.
Lol, this is not only my problem, but every user of HTC One get this problem. Im asking for solution. Just try that. Try taking picture at night, when on One is only black screen. How can U make a photo, which is not blurry? Tapping on the screen to focus is useless, cause it cant focus.. Its weird and sad. If I could do same as on the Galaxy, tap on the screen uses light and that means it will focus on objects at night, so U have great picture. But One, which has better picture at night cause of ultrapixles, cant do that?
Enough to know whats the problem?

Stock 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 because there has been quite a few updates that increases camera performance. Maybe some pictures could help.
If you are properly focusing on something after pressing your finger on the screen it should say "AE and AF locked".

Yeah,if I tap on the screen,it says ae and af locked. But it doesnt solve the problem. Try it. U will have blurry photo too. It just cant focus at night
So, I found on the internet same issue..Everybody got this problem, I think all HTC devices, but lot of people dont know about it..There was no software update which repair this..One guy got third part app, which using light-torch ,so it can focus in dark too..But he said its bit laggy, not as HTC's camera app:-/ He also tried different ROMs, nothing works..Shame on HTC..Dont understand why they cant do it like Samsung..
me too am having the same problem. am using vipers 5.2.1 and night pictures are just bad even with the powerful dual flash on the sensation

Light sensor

Can anyone download sensor kinetic and test their light sensor when it's covered and post results from screen shot as mine is all over the place , and it can't keep the lowest brightness on auto brightness without going brighter then dimmer ect .

I did it, and it seems that the sensor did not detect any changes. I tried covering it and just putting my hand over it. This is what I got:
So, I hope that helps!
PS: I don't know if the image is avaiable for you. When I click the link, it appears for me. If you can't see it, will try another hosting site or send to you in a PM.

Is there any link in my previous post? Maybe I don't have clearance yet for attaching pics or URLs. How can I proceed then?
I attach the pictures by attachments rather than image .

Can you test again for a longer period so I can see if it stays stable please .

Actually, there is no graph when the light conditions stay the same. What I mean is, when I cover the sensor with my finger, it doesn't move at all.
Sorry didn't notice that . Mine must have a fault . Another trip back to htc . Thanks for the reply .

I ended up finding a test object in focus and forcing it to lock focus by long pressing and then aiming at the intended object.

If it makes you feel any better, I haven't gotten it to work either. I talked to a buddy and he was having issues as well.
My wife will be devistated...she loves selfies haha. I don't take many but it is a bummer that it's not working.

Yea, for the selective focus to not work at all on selfies is odd. I'd imagine we start seeing more people complain of the issue before too long.
I haven't tested the live focus mode much. I came back to Android from the 7 Plus and it took quite a few updates before portrait mode worked very well. I'd imagine Samsung can dial it in with some updates too.

Maybe your unit might be defective? I'm not seeing any problems using selective focus or live focus on my end.

Sounds like a pretty common defect then. I now have 2 friends with the same issue. Is there a trick to getting selective focus to work? Lighting maybe?
Edit:. Has to be the lighting...just gave it another shot with no issues.

Yeah, usually there's a warning message that pops up saying there's not enough light in the shot. I was messing around with live focus in my bedroom under some tv lighting only and saw the alert. Makes sense.
Any updates to this? Anyone do more research? I have the same with the front camera when I gave more than 1 person in the photo. It will not focus and selective focus doesn't work either.

My old Huewei Honor 8 camera was simple to use. I could even easily blur the background after image was taken.
I'm also finding the same issues as you guys said with the note 8 camera.

Any solutions to this problem?
I haven't been able to use selective focus on the front camera since I bought the phone. It keeps saying there is no subject detected. Please help.
I'll be joining the list of "front camera bug on selective focus mode". Unable to use it since I bought the phone too. I'm using the latest build for my country (N950FXXU2BQKG)
