I'm trying to figure out how to return to stock, if I ever wanted to... I'm on 3 Network, UK (H3G)
I'm relatively new to Android, never used an RUU. I can't seem to find the correct RUU for my network anywhere. I have a Nandroid backup for 3 UK (1.28.771.x) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207874 but it doesn't contain the stock recovery - it has CWM
Anyone know where I can find a stock recovery.img and if I can just flashing the stock recovery.img once I restore the nandroid?
I don't really understand the concept of the page above regarding RUU, OTA's, etc. so any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks
I'm going to bump this, sorry!

Look inside the nandroid backup folder, is there a recovery.img in there? If so you can just flash that in bootloader by using "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and you'll be back to stock.
If the image isn't in the nandroid, then ask around..see if anyone can provide you with a recovery image of your RUU.
Infact I think all stock recoveries might be the same..so just download it from the sticky and try

But didn't he just say that the recovery inside that Nandroid Backup is CWM rather than the stock one? Flashing the recovery.img by using fastboot will just flash CWM for him.
Listen, mate, I'd download any 1.28 RUU and extract the stock recovery.img from it and then flash it in fastboot. How would you extract it from the RUU? Well, that's done by following this tutorial: https://sites.google.com/site/androidbyyorzua/home/tutorials/extracting-rom-files-from-htc-ruu
You'll end up with a rom.zip which has recovery.img, boot.img, and everything else inside it.
I am not sure if that's going to work, but I don't think recovery differs from CID or carrier to another, it's just the same stock recovery (especially since they're both 1.28).

Now before I screw up my phone, I would like to know if it is possible to switch to ICS from a custom ROM. I just want to try it out, I'm currently on Bananacakes Holiraider. I have the US version of HTC Vivid if that helps. And if it is possible, how to do it.
Short answer yes you can. Many have done it successfully, including myself. You have to relock your bootloader to be able to install the RUU. Don't do it if you're on any other carrier but ATT.
Ah ok thanks, so just to be sure, and I'm aware I may sound like a pain the assholes, I have AT&T Vivid so I'm good, all I need to do is just relock my bootloader. Then download the RUU from a thread I saw earlier. Is it still possible to root on ICS?
Yes, I'm rooted with ICS. Since the rooted rom's have been removed from here you may have to get on Wildchilds site to get a rooted ICS rom. He has step by step instructions on how to flash it without issues. Essentially after the RUU install, you'll need to unlock the bootloader, flash recovery, flash boot.img, and flash the rom. You may be able to find PG's rom elsewhere on the internet but I don't know if everything he's done is offline. Hope this helps.

You can skip downloading the RUU if you want. If you're going with WC's ROM, he has a PH39IMG.zip packaged in it that contains the new HBoot. So basically you'll relock the bootloader, flash PH39IMG.zip in bootloader TWICE, unlock bootloader, fastboot flash boot.img and wcxrecovery.img, boot to recovery, flash ROM and you'll end up with WC's rooted ICS (more detailed instructions in his .zip)
Exactly what he said!
Thanks so much. Just a couple of questions (phobia of bricked phone). Flash the PH.zip file in fastboot? As in just boot to bootloader and it should automatically update? Then reboot to fastboot again? And for the boot image, use flash GUI? Same for recovery? Then flash Rom?

Not quite. Ph flashes automatically in bootloader..TWICE. then you have to get it off of your sd, boot to hboot again, but this time choose fastboot. Plug in USB. Unlock. Fastboot flash boot boot.IMG. fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.IMG. back to bootloader. Choose recovery. Flash Rom from recovery

Do you guys have a link to WildChild's ROM site?
I've got my Vivid Bootloader unlocked and with CWM 5.5.0.4 but can't get past the white HTC screen with Holicakes or anything else.

Find one of his posts...its in his Sig. Are you flashing the boot.IMG before trying to flash the rom?

Ok I got you on everything except the fastboot flashing boot.IMGs. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience but I just don't want to rage over a bricked phone. I was able to install custom roms and stuff, but I don't recall flashing from fastboot... Thank you again so much.

Since we don't have S-Off, there a certain partitions that recovery can't write to (like the boot partition and recovery partition). Since this is the case, we have to flash custom recoveries and boot.img (which include the kernel) with fastboot. There is a GUI floating around that should flash boot.img as well, but it's not difficult to do with fastboot (I've never used the GUI so I can't speak first hand about it's effectiveness). In the ROM's .zip, you'll find boot.img. You need to extract this to the same location you have fastboot installed (in the sdk, it's in /platform-tools/). Once you have the boot.img in this directory, you need to navigate here in a command prompt. The easiest way to do this is to Shift+Click in this directory, and choose "Open command window here" Now you need to boot your phone to bootloader (power down, hold PWR+Vol- until hboot starts). Select Fastboot. Now plug your phone in and it will change to Fastboot USB. Enter the following command in the command prompt window:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
(Note: you can also flash a custom recovery here by issuing the following command, with the recovery.img in the fastboot directory
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img)
Press Enter. You will see it send, then write, then finish. Now on your phone select bootloader, then recovery. Now wipe data, cache, and Dalvik cache, then flash ROM

Why ?
If I'm not wrong, you have to restore original recovery, 5 missing apps (they were lost during htcdev bootloader unlock procedure) and execute fastboot OEM lock.

You want to install OTA then you have to install a stock ROM with the same base for that region. You can't just flash an OTA zip even when your CID is the same. You need the right CID, MID and stock ROM to flash that specific OTA.
Where can I downloaded latest OTA?
Did you make nandroid backup before you flash cwm first time? If you have it, then extract original recovery from nandroid, restore everything using cwm, then flash original recovery and do fastboot OEM lock.
Don't forget to install 5 missing apps.

Hi there!
I've just switched over from iPhone to android and want to root my HTC One. But before I do that, I would first like to make a backup of the stock ROM and stock recovery (if I want to go back to stock later because of service, selling the device and so on).
When i searched the web i found this guide. The guide mentioned that you could boot TWRP through "fastboot boot recovery.img" without flashing the recovery and then make a nandroid backup of the entire stock system (with the recovery included).
But when i tried doing it through fastboot the boot loader frooze and i had to restart the phone. How do i make a backup of the stock ROM and recovery if i can't do it like described in the guide?
I know you should be able to install an RUU if you wan't to go back to stock but i run a carrier branded phone with a CID that has no available RUU's...
I currently run Stock HTC Sense ROM and recovery with a unlocked bootloader through htcdev.com.
So how do i make a backup of the stock recovery and ROM, I would really appreciate all possible answers and theories!
Thanks for the reply!
You can install TWRP and backup your stock ROM, and for the recovery what you can do is download an OTA update from somewhere around here on the forums, extract it and you will find the stock recovery inside it and you can flash it easily the same way you flash TWRP using fastboot but what I dont know is if you have to find an OTA for your carrier branded phone or the recovery isn't affected by carriers, I hope someone can answer this question!

Yes i also wonder if you have to find a specific OTA for your specific phone or if the recovery is "universal" for all different versions. My CID is H3G_G04 which seems to be a specific version for the operator three (3). I have not been able to find any RUU's or OTA's for that specific CID.
It would be awesome if anybody could answer this!
Thank you

If it's a new phone and has hboot 1.54 then you can't boot into recovery through fastboot as HTC have blocked this. You will have to flash recovery and then do your backups. There are plenty of sources around for the stock recovery if you require it later.

Is there any other way to extract a recovery from my phone? I can not find any RUU's or OTA's for my specific CID. It's almost like it didn't exist...

Recovery seems to be universal. Someone posted that they used this stock recovery to restore back to stock and get an OTA:

Can't get my stock unlocked one to boot into CWM recovery. Wanting a stock nandroid before doing S-off.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery.img
Just hangs at downloading.
Is this a limitation of the 1.54 hboot or something else?

"fastboot boot recovery.img" no longer works in 1.54. You're going to have to flash CWM (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) to be able to get to CWM. and of course you'll loose stock recovery, so the nandroid will contain the CWM recovery.
How can I extract the stock recovery before flashing CWM?
Or where can I find stock recovery for 2.24.161.1?

Several people were looking for stock recovery for that version, don't know if anybody found it, but there is a Guru Reset for 2.24.161.1, which supposedly includes the stock recovery: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-161-1-zip/
Downloaded that. Not sure that is stock recovery. Says there is an option to restore stock recovery when available.
I found this....
http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-cu...k-recovery-2-24-161-1-vodafone-gesucht-2.html
Image size is different to one in ruu
Any way to verify?

I don't know how to decompile .img files, so can't verify.
One thing you can do (if the above don't work), is once you are S-Off, (temporarily) downgrade to this nandroid: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-cwm-nandroid-backup-cid-vodap102-1-29-161-7-7z/
then download the OTA to 2.24.161.1, do not install, just extract recovery.img from the OTA file.
Hi guys im new to the HTC community,
I already unlocked my bootloader S-ON
I made a back up of my stock Rom prior from flashing a GPE ROM
I flashed the boot.img then flashed the gpe rom its great
But what if i wanted to go back to my stock pure sense backup? Do i need to flash the original backup's boot.img for it to restore?
Lastly, what if i want to try ARHD, do i need to flash its boot.img? I read the installation procedure but i was wondering why does the GPE need to flash thru fastboot its boot.img
Then in ARHD its says just flash it in recovery?
Sorry for the longpost thanks!

I have had my One M7 for 2 years and have never flashed a boot.img along with a rom
restoring a Nandroid restores the boot.img and flashing ARHD or any custom rom flashes the boot.img for you.
You need to focus on getting the phone s-off if you want to mess with GPe and Lollisense roms
unlike older htc phones, you don't need to flash boot.img after flashing a rom. When flashing a rom, boot.img is flashed at the same time. You had to that on older htc phone because boot.img wasn't accessible from recovery, now with the M7, boot.img can be flashed from recovery so its already included in every rom. So no need to flash boot.img unless you want a different kernel than what comes with the rom you want to flash.
Thx guys! Made my mind clearer
