I dunno about you lot, but I find it a real pain when members of my contact list have their display name as some random quote or statement, but don't actually tell you their name. I found it frustrating having to right click and look at their email address every time they signed on or changed their name while I wasn't looking.
So to combat it, I sent everyone on my contact list that had these types of names (about 30 of them) here, and it worked, almost all of them changed their names No more right clicking for me!
Perhaps I'm turning into an grumpy old man though, perhaps these things shouldn't bother me. Have I have been unnessecessarly rude to them? Or did I have a point?
If it bothers you too, spread the word. Maybe we could change the world....
kool!
Timmeh - maybe you are right; or maybe I'm a Grumpy Old Man myself.
I do have sympathy with your viewpoint.
Thanks for the link. Ready-made sarcasm is a valuable commodity.
Cheers and good luck!
but I like h4x0r text
I know what you mean tho' - with MSN its a pain when people keep changing their name - I just have everyone blocked - and then when they get online I unblock them if I want to speak to them
I usually have my names as ScreenName - message

I would have done that, except I would have spent half my life right clicking to look at their email address to decide if it's someone I want to talk to.
Ok I can live with h4x0r text I suppose, as long as it's not too obscure.
I have not tried MSN Plus for a little while but that used to allow you to change your contacts name to a name of your choice so it did not matter if they changed it.
http://www.msgplus.net/
I may be adding it again i was just waiting for MSNM 7 final.
Be carefull to pay attention when installing as it has adware packaged that you can untick but it can easy to skip the screen.
this is just a fun poll, what do you mainly use your kaiser for?
keep in mind, this isnt "what do you only do with your kaiser?"
news, email, remote desktop, phone/sms.
i guess sometimes i play a few games during class
No poll questions, but I use it for Texting, internet, and semi - organizing.
My main use is for sat nav, mainly tomtom. I also use it to keep track of my appointments, play games, check emails, watch videos and browse the net, love this phone, it's like a pocket laptop
i would say the obvious answer is for calling, but I'm assuming you want to know what else we do with our Kaiser.
SMS, GPS, games, set appointments, and to be honest...show off.
wow that was quick, i didnt even FINISH the poll and got 3 replys, here is the updated poll, figured this was easist rather than trying to compile lists..
id have to say my top 3 are music/video/media, camera, and gaming.
but if i had to choose one i suppose it would be music/video/media.
Im not sure what this is going to accomplish other than generate a lot of replies, but....uhhh...all of them.
Also, you added GPS twice.

You should make it multi selection and show who voted so you know what they use it for.
i wish to mainly use my kaiser to beat tito to death with..
really using it for the alarm clock...

i thought about it, but then most people would select every feature that they most likely bought the kaiser for, ALL of these features! plus, its too late for me to change it.

Why anyways? What did I do(I want to know, not that I am offended but I want to know)?
talk n text...to me its just a phone...and i use it as a phone...of course i use its other functions as well...
besides talking & watching p0rn(tube, tube). what else?) lolz.
Primary Usage - Mobile phone for talking and texting.
Followed by - Email, Internet, Organizer, Navigator, Alarm Clock, Games (rarely), Media (even more rare), Playing - not games - all the stuff we do here at XDA-Developers - I call that playing
I'm not sure whether to call it a phone with a computer or a computer with a phone, either way, one answer to the poll just doesn't cover what I do with it.
Primary reason I bought: GPS. If it didn't have integrated GPS I would have not even considered it.
My usage primarily falls like this (From most frequent to least frequent)
GPS
Clock/calendar/alarm clock/appointment scheduler
Telephone (Isn't that novel, I use it as a phone!)
Looking up weather forecasts
Internet
Business usage (Looking up stuff on the internet at work & on the road)
Calculator
Music (I like to stream internet radio over BT at the gym)
Games
Take pictures/videos
Things I rarely, or never do:
Text
IM
Listen to *.mp3's
Email
-Jay
mainly for chatting, texting, web browsing, emails, listening to musics, watch youtube.
occationaly use GPS, camera
Spell checking. It auto-corrects me if I misspell "you". You should look into it.
My Tilt is My Life!!!!
I think the list of what I don't do with it would be shorter.
I don't watch Videos on it. I've had the Blue Angel, Wizard, Hermes and not the Tilt and I've never really used any of them for videos.
I have 31 Games installed on mine and I play each of them a little bit here and there.
It is my primary e-mail device and I txt with a few people regularly.
GPS, GPS and GPS were three of the primary upgrading points:
GPS(1) for me to get good turn by turn directions that don't involve reading.
GPS(2) for me to play with (geo-caching some people call it, seeing where I am I call it).
GPS(3) tracking of my teenage daughter who will get her driver's license in a few short months for her safety and my peice of mind.
Provide a soundtrack to my otherwise boring life, once I forgot to turn off the music when I got home and my daughter was like "Woah!! Daddy when did you get theme music?"
Self-validation since women seem to be afraid of an honest man who won't hit them I've discovered that technology is as loyal to me as I am to it.
The list goes on but I think I sound pathetic enough already!
I do a few things...
Lol, good point Kyphur.
I usually stream internet talk radio shows for at least 6 hours a day while at work, and then after work I'm listening to music while working out and playing basketball, all the while talking and texting off an on, as well as checking my Outlook email account and checking other various websites. When I'm on the road I'll be watching that little blinking blue dot in Google Maps amazed that the little thing seems to know where I'm going when I don't. And sometimes when i'm feeling lazy I'll have it do the laundry and dishes for me.
Hi Everyone,
I must start by saying I'm new to installing software on my phone, I used to add and remove things all the time with my PDAs but have never really seen the advantage of doing so on my phone but now battery life is decent and the Internet is cheap and fast I'm really interested in doing lots more with my Varrio III.
So, for the record, I have a new MDA Vario III from T-Mobile in the UK with 'unlimited' data. Here are some things I'd like to do with my phone. I'm not too sure what I *can* and *can't* do.
1) Record Phone calls.
For work I would really like to be able to record both ends of a phone-call and store that recording on the phones memory card and/or internal memory. Is this possible?
2) Copy SMS Messages to Exchange Server
I'd like my phone to automatically sent my SMS messages to my email so I can access (view) them in Outlook, Outlook Web Access etc.
3) SMS Rules
I see I can make sub-folders under the SMS Inbox. Could I set up a rule so messages from certain senders is sent to a sub-folder. For example messages from my bank to one folder and delivery status notifications to another?
4) Data Radio Control
Most of the time there is no reason my phone needs to connect to anything faster than GPRS. Is there a tool that would let me turn off the 3G and HSPDA radios as I feel like it. While HSDPA is quick it seems to EAT battery!
5) Data Timer
Simple one here, I'm looking for a really light weight tool to add up 'bandwidth' I'm using. Just something like, ' Since you last reset the stats, you have used (transferred) 25MB of data'.
6) No signal notification.
I'd love for my phone to vibrate or play a sound when I lose cellular reception and when I find it again. And just for fun a different alert when I change cellular cells.
GPS IDEAS/QUESTIONS
7) GPS Tracking and updating to web server
Ok, I've been playing with TrackMe and it is exactly what I've been looking for. But uploading every few minutes seems to use a boat load of battery. I'm looking for your opinion on the optimum settings for TrackMe so I'm not using so much battery. For the record, I'm mostly walking so I'm not covering huge distances very quickly.
8) GPS based SMS sending.
Say I arrive at a train station, I'd love my phone to remind me to text the office and tell them I'm about to get on a train. Now, say I come within 5km of a location, I'd love my phone to text a predefined group of people with a message like, 'Hey, I'm currently in Glasgow, fancy a coffee?' or something like that. Any ideas?
QR Codes
9)I have a 2D barcode reader application and I would like ideas how I could use QR codes etc. What is everyone using them for, also is there an application that would read bar codes using the phones camera?
So those are my 9 requests. I've done a little googling but I'm really not sure what applications to look for and once I find applications if they are any good. Looking for your advice and recommendations
Thanks in advance,
ross(cbrown)
Sounds like most of what you want it out there. I know there was a thread about a week ago in the software section in regards to recording phone calls. There is a thread here about tracking gps, another about messing with your data (kaiser tweak) etc etc. just search around.
This thread reminds me of a bunch of those threads from april fools day. He can't be serious.

In his defense, searching and identifying relevant bits of information is not the easiest thing to do on this forum. This place used to be more friendly than it has become. Rosscbrown: try posting your request on MoDaCo's forum, chances are people there will be more likely to make suggestions.
For god sake he did not ask for links to relevant threads, only for suggestions/ideas as to how best do these things!

Some random thoughts:
1. GPS is known to eat batterys for lunch. Whenever I have TomTom on I am in the car and it is on the car charger. To leave your GPS on all the time so that you can get what you are wanting with (tell me when I get close to something) is going to cost you in battery life. BUT - TomTom has the ability to warn you when you get near a dunkin donuts or starbucks - etc. All you need to do is put in TomTom the places where you want "warnings" and you should be able to have it tell you that you are near- now I am NOT smart enough to tell you how to make it send a message - not really sure that after thinking about it you would WANT an auto message - say you got into town late and had to leave early in the morning and it sent an auto message to meet you at the pub to your friends and they went and waited for you?
2. no signal notification - I get this in my bluetooth headset - it is really helpful when I am driving - there are places where i am not "covered" with signal that I never realized. Try getting a BT headset and you will see what I mean - not really sure that you want an audible on that though that everyone can hear do you? It would get OBNOXIOUS in meetings or inside buildings - enough so that you would have to turn off your phone.
3. recording phone calls - I have not seen anywhere that this is possible - you are able to record one side of the conversaiont but I am not aware of any software that will let you record BOTH sides - be aware that there may be legal issues on this depending on your country.
This may be a great place to start: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/cms/index.php?q=blogs/3/513
4. Data rate on radio control - there are some out there - you can use Kaiser Tweak I believe to limit this - however - if you get the right ROM (see my signature for mine) you can get great battery life and NOT have to tweak this item.
5. Bar code reader - yes - I actually saw on a thread somewhere that someone had done this - taken a picture of a bar code and then read it - seems awfully long winded way around the barn though - you probably ought to get a device that has a scanner on it if you are going to read a lot of bar codes - the camera on the Tilt is a little slow and then to run a program that "reads" the picture interpret it and return a value and then plug that value in to another program - you could have typed in the bar code easier. Factor in bad reads and having to take the picture again and you are going to get frustrated way sooner than satisfied.
This MAY be the place to start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1964222
The other things in your post I will have to leave to smarter people.
Bill
I watch American Idol. And I love the Vote for the Worst website (Link not allowed ).
I wanted to vote for the "VFTW" candidate, but I also didn't want to spend hours of my life doing it. I have unlimited texting from AT&T, so I decided to write this app to help me automatically vote.
In the "Enter Number" box, you enter the number you want to send the text to (i.e. 5703). The browse button lets you select from your contacts.
In the "Count" box, you specify the total number of texts you want to send.
The "Base Delay" box specifies how quickly to send them (2000 mS = 2 seconds). I built this delay in because American Idol will through out texts that they determine are "not valid". I figure a tween could probably send about 1 per second, so a normal human could probably send one every 2 seconds. YMMV. I also added a randomization factor to the delay of 1/2 second + 20% base delay - this way, AI doesn't get 1000 texts at 2 seconds apart each; they get one, then 1.5 s another, then 2.5 s later another, etc.
The "Message" box is the message you want to send. For American Idol it should be "vote".
Once you've filled in all the fields, click "Send". If you decide to stop voting before the app quits, just click "Cancel".
There are two files attached to this post; you only need one. The .zip file contains an installer that will run on your computer if you have your Windows Mobile smartphone connected via Activesync. The CAB file will run directly on your phone to install the software.
All my code is included in the install - I'm a big fan of Open Source.
Let me know of any problems at maxvip99 -AT- hotmail -DOT- com.
Thanks!

Oh great, I was just thinking that I do not get enough text spam and was wishing that people would start developing easier ways for people to spam me.
As with every " plague " , how about providing an antidote ( text spam filter ) with your poison.
On a side note: I can only imagine what I would feel like if I was a hopeful, very talented singer, trying my hardest to get one little break in the music business, only to get thwarted by a bunch of " no life losers " who skew the " honest " results by voting for the worst singer because they have no hopes or dreams of their own and way too much time on their hands. You seem to be inventive and talented in app developing, why not persue this instead of trying to ruin other people's dreams.

So the voice functions of WP7 are ~OK~,
but not great right?
Wouldn't it be nice to get a permanent voice link to your phone; to dictate Office docs as well as call, text & e-mail? All at the touch of minimal (1 softkey?) buttons.
Something a bit like StarTrek NextGen> Communicators (come on, I know you know what I'm talking about!)
Call:
"Bridge to Mum"
mum
"Come on (enter name here) that StarTrek stuff is a bit old now, no?"
Word Doc:
"Captains Log, Stardate: Some made up **** etc . . . etc"
This is probably the only thing that modern technology hasn't quite grasped . . . yet.
But fear not. With the cloud based TellMe from MS and now a free 90 day trial of SDK from Nuance,
http://blog.dragonmobileapps.com/2011/09/developers-say-hello-to-new-ndev-mobile.html
and a little bit (a lot) of input from the Geniusauruses here on XDA, perhaps a Permanently-Listening Mobile Communications Interface (PLIMCI?) is not far off.
Anyone any thoughts on this?
Can XBoxMod become the inventor of WarpAge communications?
Can Yuki be brought in from the cold to take on his greatest challenge yet?
Or will the team at DFT prove themselves to be worthy of praise once more?
Maybe we'll even see the emergence of some hot new devs taking over from where the last. . .
This is getting away from me now so I leave it here for you.
