Having a couple of odd issues on my HTC One; it's running stock OS, no root, etc.
I'd installed Swype and the Chrome Browser, setting the default keyboard to Swype and the default browser to Chrome. However, whenever I restart the phone, I find the defaults for both revert to the HTC keyboard and the HTC stock "Internet" app
A search on google/xda didn't net me anything, thought I'd post here on the chance that someone may have an idea? Thanks!

The default SMS app in HTC Hero ROMs, to put it simply, sucks, especially since the 2.1 update, it keeps going up to the top and when opening the keyboard it doesn't scroll up either, scrolling is incredibly slow and the keyboard is quite laggy in this app.
I'm not keen on any of the ones in the market, specifically ChompSMS and Handcent (Chomp has ads and is slow, Handcent is slow).
I run a rooted HTC Sense ROM and just want the standard SMS app, it's fast and simple. I tried Froyo Elelinux (on the development forum but can't post link because I'm a new user and it's recognised as an outside link for some reason) the other day and the SMS app in that is great, from memory it's the same as the 2.1.
Does anyone know where I can grab this in APK form that'll install on my rooted but otherwise standard HTC ROM?
Thanks!
I too hate the Sense Messaging app. I use Handcent though, I do like the Message app from 2.2 it's quick and clean. If I find the stock 2.1 version I'll post it here.
EDIT: Here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=367490&d=1280204330
Thanks! But it doesn't install. I suppose I need to remove the Sense one first?
Edit: I used adb to rename Mms.odex in /system/app and then used adb push to overwrite stock mms app with the AOSP Mms.apk. It's so much better only problem is it doesn't seem to go into landscape mode...
Since I rooted my Nook color this morning, when I am in the browser and go to type in a box, instead of pulling up the keyboard on half the screen and leaving the browser window on top, it pulls up the large text typing box. Is there a way I can restore this so I can see the browser too? I've poked around in the settings and tried searching for keyboards in the forums, but that came up with a zillion results.
This is for when browsing in landscape mode. (Vertical seems to be working fine.) I've tried changing from the default browser to Skyfire, but no luck.
Many keyboards are just like that, unfortunately. I know that SlideIT actually lets you see the browser when in landscape, though. You could give that or another keyboard a try.

If your willing to pay......
Better Keyboard Pro version 8 has an option to Resize the keyboard, there is also a free version but I'm not sure if it has that option. (was trying to upload a pic so you could see but not enough posts yet)
The Gingerbread keyboard displays correctly in landscape mode. There are several threads with information, including a download link to an apk that works for 2.1
If you prefer your current keyboard for portrait typing, there is an app on the market called Keyboard Manager that will change your keyboard automatically based on device orientation.
i use swiftkey keyboard, and when i type in an address in the standard browser, if I then go to use the swiftkey predictions somewhere, it no longer predicts.
also, why does voice search force close unless you have the standard browser installed?
i use opera mobile because I find it much better all round, but i can't get rid of the standard browser for the simple reason that if i do voice search will stop working.
anyone have a way to make voice search and vlingo work without the standard browser (CM7)?
thanks
Voice search is integrated with the stock WebKit it will never work with another browser. As for your online prediction most keyboards don't predict for use online as web addresses are usually not common dictionary words and auto complete adds spaces which is not optimal for address entry.
hi
thanks for reply - but what i meant was that by typing anything in the standard browser using swiftkey, predictions no longer work in any app eg. handcent or gmail until I kill the keyboard app.
i think ive found a fix for the voice search too, it looks possible that voice search may have been looking for standard browser as default after id uninstalled it, so i just had to make sure to set opera as the default for that function. its working.... for now hehe
SwiftKey X don't use word prediction when you type e.g. url, email addres or password..

MIUI ROMs somehow manage to bypass this by having a freaking awesome stock browser set as the default, and voice search works with it flawlessly. Do you think there's any way to set another browser as the default in the Webkit as is done in MIUI?

How did you go about "setting opera as the default for that function?"
EDIT: Ok, I'm a bit shocked that this worked. I've been using Miren, Boat Browser, and ninesky, but I haven't tried Dolphin HD in a few months. After installing it, even with the stock browser completely uninstalled, Google Voice Search now automatically queries my search terms in Dolphin. Thank you SO MUCH for the tip!

When I go to `App info` in Chrome app, `LAUNCH BY DEFAULT->No defaults set.` & `Clear defaults` is a greyed out. How do I reset it?
Do you have some other browser set as the default now? If so, you have to clear the defaults from that browser's app info. When you launch a link from an email, do you go straight to Chrome now or are you asked which browser to use? If you get the question, you have no default browser set.
I only have one browser that came with the phone (google chrome) and that's what I'm using ..
You probably have no defaults to clear since you only have one browser on the device.
Doesn't matter if you have 2 browsers installed, chrome is a system app, I have both aosp and chrome browser installed and clear defaults is greyed out on chrome. I use alternate app picker module for xposed framework to set aosp browser as my default browser. You can also freeze it with TB or ROM toolbox if you wish to remove it

I have had this keyboard problem for as long as I can remember. Lived with it for a while but it is driving me nuts and I need to fix it.
The default input method always reverts to the stock keyboard. I much prefer SwiftKey but cannot get it to remain as the default after selecting it.
After setting SwiftKey as the default it works for a few minutes while I test typing in a couple apps. Then I will need to type something and the stock keyboard had gone back to being the default.
I am rooted stock only and don't see any apps that have been disabled that look to be the culprit.
Any ideas would be appreciated. I cannot live with the stock keyboard any longer.
Help please!
Have you tried freezing it? I've totally uninstalled the stock keyboard, no issues.

I could not disable it but that's a great idea. I just used root explorer to rename the apk and it seems to work great.
Thank you very much. I should have thought of that.
