Things you didn't know about the nexus 4 - Nexus 4 General

So people at times find out random stuff from the menus or wherever and if you're one of them share it here. Sorry if there's already a thread like this.

I don't think an AOSP device really has any "secret gee-wiz" features. Sense has lots of little goodies hidden, AOSP does what it's supposed to do in an up-front way.
The physical hardware of the N4 leaves nothing mysterious on the table, nor does stock Android. Not knocking it, but I'm betting this thread will be a ghost-town. The N4 does what it does very well and that's really the extent of it.

Please use any of the existing discussion threads for any SECRETS that you may find.
thanks

I am afraid that the title belongs to Xiaomi Mi One...the current king of "made in China" product.

Dunno why, seems like the initial is the most important thing in the branding. And I think I could start a new thread just for the KIRF. XD
Edit: Some of the names are actually legit companies with plenty of their own phone production lines.

Who is your provider? I'm either getting the optimus g or xperia tl depending on dev support and battery life for the two.

Depends on what you desire in a phone. LTE, Durability, Design, Support, Custom rom support, Screen resolution/PPI, Battery life etc. etc.
I come from a history of HTC phone and I always liked them because they feel more durable. Also, the dev support is very high on HTC and Samsung. When you go for power, you should definitely look at Samsung S3, HTC One X(+) or the new LG Optimus G. Also, if you're interested in getting the latest Android updates, you should keep an eye on the Google (LG) Nexus 4.
I must say that I took a risk in choosing for Sony. The dev support is relatively low and I didn't like their Q1 2012 models Xperia S, U and P. This because I heard negative stories about the battery life, the outdated hardware, the lack of proper support etc. Yet, I must say that I never had a smartphone that operates this smooth, and the battery life is better than HTC's Q4 2011 phones. I own my phone for a couple of days now and I like it more and more.
When I was in Indonesia this summer, the Acro S caught my eye and I have been looking out for the release of the European brother of that phone: the Sony Xperia V. The specs are promising, I like Sony Timescape (more than for example HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz) and it promises to be a solid phone (it should be dust and water resistant).
To summarize it all. Keep a lookout on comparization websites, such as phonearena. You can easily compare up to three phones there.
If you really don't know what to pick, I can only recommend to stick with the Nexus releases. You are interested in Android for some reason
Check out my phone list in signature, I can't wait to get myself this xperia t

Dev support for samsung (at least on the aosp/cm front) will drop, samsungs ****ing around with sources, broken code and producing a mess in general is driving devs away. HTC is obviously locking bootloaders in its more recent models and is enforcing less dev-friendly techniques, so dev support will remain strong but it wont beas much fun to "work" with as htc used to be. LG produces **** hardware, I heard. And their custom android implementation isnt that shiny either, I heard (lol, I hear a lot, obviously ). Leaves Sony, which is overall well, behaving goog from a dev perspective and the hardware is ok, good even, albeit not highest top tier. In terms of updates theres rom for improvement. So as the ultimate last, a Nexus device. Latest android, always. Excellent dev support. But limited storage and no expansion possibilities. Make your choice.

If you want a more neutral ICS experience with some great Sony add ons (Walkman, etc.) and like the idea of 13MP photos go for the Xperia T.
If you want top spec and more grunt the S3 is a bit more powerful but you get TouchWiz and Samsung's stamp on it all. Also, the S3 has a much richer selection of custom ROMs.
Personally, lack of SD slot would put me off the OneX before I even opened the box.

I agreed with almost everything you said but this. I am no expert, but I think the major problem isn't hardware... it's their support / drivers/ software. I owned a G2x, and hardware wise it was a treat. However, it was hampered by the lack of source (which has been rectified in the last week or so I believe) code and the NVIDIA drivers for it. Their latest incarnation, the G, is very nice on paper, but alas, it will likely suffer the same fate, which is why the Nexus 4 looks so tempting. Hell, Google trusts their hardware, they just wanted to make a phone everyone would want AND possibly afford. Unlocked no less!
I have sent my T back for repairs, I had some audio stuff go south. That said, I really like that Sony offers the option to unlock bootloaders. I like the feel of the phone and the speed. HTC burned a bridge with me and my Amaze (also just released source code for their WIFI / BT drivers IIRC), so I went Sony, and am not sorry that I did.
EDIT: Oh yea, and the Sony take on ICS is really quite nice. Not bloated, most of the apps I actually WANT to use, and it's well designed IMHO.
Thx everyone =)

No regrets, You have done a good choice, I have TX too, I'm happy with: elegant design, removable battery (very important), SD card slot, good benchmarks, even better compared with phones with quad core processor, a very good 13 Mp camera, easy to unlock, Sony developpers friendly.
Bad: few custom roms, slow process updating, Hope more from developpers.
Previous phones: a lot of Nokia flagships (finished with), and in the last 2 years:Xperia X10, Xperia S and now a beautiful Xperia TX, all unlocked and rooted.
Now got the t, little disappointed with the development level for the phone but the phone it self is ok, not great but ok I guess

Is it upsetting that the samsung is face of android?

I really don't ever see this changing because google will never take control of their product. But over the past few weeks I have been noticing that the only phones people really know about are the iphone and samsung s3. Like if i tell people about what a nexus is and why it's better they just look at me crazy like I'm trying to pitch them and I'm the one out of touch.
Google releases a 300 dollar phone that is hard to order, on half the carriers, lacks storage and LTE and they this is going to work. It makes me sick that touchwiz is the face of android. I wonder how google feels about this.
I don't really care much what stupid people think my phone's awsome, wooohooo

Google is new to the hardware market. Sure, they sold already 4 Nexus devices, but the Nexus One, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are developer / nerd / android lover devices and not a device for everyone like the Nexus 4.
Google made mistakes, though. Really bad mistaked. The ordering is bad, no 32 GB Nexus 4, Android 4.2 is bad and create weird issues. I hope a 4.2.1 update will come soon and fix the problems with my Nexus 4 (USB OTG, Random ANRs, Touchscreen Sensivity).
Samsung spent a ton on marketing. They deserve to get some fruit from their labors.

Remember when HTC was the face of Android? Remember when Sense (not the Windows version) was first unveiled along with the HTC Hero? How about the Evo and it's massive (at the time) 4.3in screen? Samsung being in the spotlight now only pushes the other manufacturers to work harder on their new devices and marketing schemes. The other big Android companies will also get their time to shine at some point, but that's not what the Nexus line is about. The Nexus line is really built for Devs, people like us who frequent XDA, and for Google to set the standard for what OEMs should strive for.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Nope.
Samsung have amazing build quality, some people don't like plastic but the build quality is second to none. The amount of sales and the few returns they have proves this and Apple don't choose Samsung to make the insides of their products because they suck.
Also TouchWiz is great, I don't see why people hate on it so much. Samsung make their phones easy to load new roms, they don't try to stop you from doing it like some. Also when I try to go back to stock Android after using TouchWiz.... I can't because stock Android, even 4.2 is missing so many amazing features. I mean the Note 2's Pen functionality and the PiP and multiple windows is worth TouchWiz alone.
Pointless thread - nothing to do with the Nexus 4
Should be in the Android forum

About as much as I care that Microsoft is the face of the operating system market.
The general population can keep using what they want, there is always going to be power users who want to tweak and automate everything they can to work best for them.
I'll happily use my AOSP ROMs and Gentoo while the general population happily uses Touchwiz and Windows.
People need to stop saying that the Nexus line is for developers and geeks. That really hasn't been true for years now. That ended when carriers started selling Nexus branded phones in retail stores and online (pretty much since the Nexus S). The Galaxy Nexus was just some weird "Galaxy S II.5" phone offering the stock experience and the Nexus S was the precursor to the Galaxy S II.
This is the Nexus 4 General forum, for news, tips, guides, howtos, etc relating to LG & Google's Nexus 4.

[Q] Will the Xperia Z development be evergreen? or will it reach a dead end soon?

Im looking forward to upgrade from my HTC One X, the reason being that its development has come to a dead-end, Almost no more custom ROMs, So Im thinking of buying either the Xperia Z or the Samsung Galaxy Note II. Both are identical devices, Im a custom ROM junkie and a device having active development is a must for me, and I plan on keeping this device for me for quite some time. Which device would you suggest? Note 2 or Xperia Z? Thanks.
I had the Note 2 and I sold it for my current Xperia Z. These phones are not similar bro. Just keep in mind that this phone has a completely different firmware atmosphere. Took me some time to get used to it. In regards to your question, I dont think it could be answered to well. We cant really predict future development. However, we DO know that official support from Sony is strong since its a rather popular device that will receive 4.4. The way I see it is if it is.getting 4.4 then it should have good support from devs now and in future. I would get the Z bro
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
consider both features of each device and which suits you better , it is likely the xperia z will get 1 more update after kitkat and it would probally end from there with most devices officially .... i could be wrong as the android os and hardware requirements are becoming less needy so who knows we could see another 2 updates after kitkat .... my old phone the htc desire only really went up to froyo to the general public and gingerbread for the developer community officially however xda devs have supported the device up to kitkat and as you know this device has way lower memory and chip set (this is at least 3-4 updates after official updates ceased to be released)

What's your best smartphones/tablets manufacturer and WHY?

Hello buddies!
This thread made to see whats the most popular manufacturer here and WHY!
And its may help the confused people who want to buy a new device!
Rules:
put the manufacturer name
Device model (eg. Galaxy S5!)
The best android version on it
Why
So lets start!
I didn't used samsung or HTC but i have a Sony one!
Xperia Z C6602 the best android version i got is 4.3 JB fast & smooth stable
Why Sony? Very easy to repair a bricked device
The UI close to AOSP/google
Light
Good camera
etc..
Feel free to post what you like!
Same here
Xperia Play (GSM) that ran CM 9
I love Sony because their phones practicly ran anything buttery smooth and they were very easy to fix and hard wearing
HTC One M8. Why?
-Beautifull design
-Premium Materials
-Awesome screen with great viewing angles
-Extra smooth
-HTC Sense, a big plus
-Duo camera features
-Boomsound speakers
-Great battery life
-Cooler then other devices that get warm in few minutes!
-HTC service center. In usa they replace broken glass for free, in italy (where i live) they change broken phone with a new one for free (only if the damage is not caused by user).
