The Sony Xperia white paper says that the SP does not have a magnetometer.
However, the compass seems to work according to this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtO07kJUzO4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
It can't be the gyroscope as the compass responds to the magnet. If a magnetometer is not necessary for the compass to work, then why do all the other phones have one?
Can anyone else repeat the test? Preferably with a compass app, Google sky map and Google maps, all three of which are dependent on a compass.
If it does work, how is that possible? What black magic is this?
I'm very interested in this phone but I absolutely need a compass, especially since I'm coming from a phone that doesn't have one and that's very annoying...
Maybe it's not the same, but CPU-Z (free on the play store) show a Magnetic Field sensor...
My current HTC explorer definitely does not show either the magnetic field or the gyroscope using the CPU Z s app - my phone has neither of those sensors.
Someone should post this evidence on Sony mobile's talk forums and ask them to confirm again that the white paper is still correct. Maybe a certain variant of the phone has it? But others don't? What variant is your phone?
PS. My phone's running CM 10.1. That's why I can use CPU-Z, in case anyone's wondering
My phone variant is C5303, bought it from my carrier (Orange France).

I can confirm that C5302, unlocked, Indian version has a working compass. A friend bought it recently
Well the compass work inside the maps app. And every other navigation apps working without a problem.

I have a C5303, and I can confirm that it has a magnetometer. There is an app on the Play Store called "Metal Detector" which uses a phone's magnetometer to measure magnetic fields. By placing magnets near my phone, the metal detector app began showing in increase in the magnetism levels around the phone. I believe the magnetoneter is in the top right corner of the phone, can anyone confirm this?

If I use it while I'm driving (with TomTom) seems to be working fine.
However, if I use it while I walk, sometimes the position doesn't update even if you walk for 30 seconds. After that, you get a new position. Then it works for a few minutes and I stop getting new positions. I have to wait a few seconds again.
I have tried in different places (no tree cover) and with different programs and I got the same problem.
Anybody had a similar problem?
Thanks
Don't worry... Your GPS works fine.
This GPS is not intended to work while walking. The reason is simple: it needs a minimum of speed in order for it to calculate the direction you move in.
That's why it works on the car and not on the "walk".
I can't remmeber the details, but I think GPS has a error range of.. 15m or 50m, from which you may have problems. As such, if you were to walk a long enough distance, it ought to update itself.

I'd have to disagree, at least as far as my device goes. I use iGuidance software, AT&T Rom, and everytime I take the dog for a walk (three times since I got the unit) I bring it with me and do a walking nav test. It works perfectly everytime.
It's not defective, it's due to a feature of GPS hardware to prevent erratic jumping around due to accuracy errors. For more info, go here and search down to where it talks about "Static Navigation".
Once of the reasons I got this phone was for the GPS, because we like to do geocaching. However, unless my phone is defective I won't be able to use it for that...
Not unless you can find a way to disable static navigation. While I'm sure this isn't an acceptable solution, I've found that if I shut down whatever GPS application I'm using (such as google maps) and re-open it, it does seem to reinitiate GPS and update to the current position.
I hear people talking about the GPS on this phone and I have to say that I find it to be amazing. Here are a few of my happy stories.
1) I got 4 sats inside of a hockey rink yesterday
2) On google maps if I zero in on my back yard I can tell if I moved from one side of my yard to the other
3) Tom Tom, Pocketstreets, WindowsLive search and google maps all work great with out any issues at all.
People have to remember that it is a phone not a camera (although it does well at that), not a guidance system for missles requiring 1cm accuracy. It is a phone and a damn good one if you ask me.

Thanks a lot for the information. It helped me a lot.
However it seems that there is not a way of disabling Static Navigation for this model of GPS, right?
I don't know. I guess someone would have to discover how to do it, if it's even possible.

I can to some extent as well. But if I move from one room to another, it doesn't update unless I close google maps and re-open it. That is the issue the OP is having... when traveling at low speeds, you have to travel a relatively long distance before it updates. But I've found it to be extremely accurate using navigation software in the car, which is what static navigation optimizes for.
HTC TYTNII GPS Problem

Hi all,
I'm having problems with NFC in my HTC One and perhaps you can help me in order to solve them.
I mean, I bought NFC tags (Myfare Classic 1K), and initially I worked with them very well using NFC Task Launcher and Tasker. My issue is that I can read these tags sometimes... but sometimes no. It's frustating. Of course I have activated NFC option in my mobile and I put it close to the NFC tag using the area of the rear camera (where is located the antenna).
I try to connect with my new bluetooh headphones by NFC (Sony MDR-1RBT) and sometimes connect... sometimes no.
My HTC One is not rooted and bought free.
Any idea? Help please.
Thanks a lot!!
You probably have the same issue as I do. We've got faulty NFC chips. I'm sending mine in for warranty soon
I looked for information about NFC problems with HTC One but I didn't found nothing. Bad NFC Chips? Oh my God! Is this usual and reported?
I thought that perhaps it would be something related to software (i.e. some process running in background)... but if we are talking about a hardware issue I'm going to worry a lot.
Could we expect news with new release of android? What do you think?
Thaks a lot for your answer!
Best regards
Did you unlock your screen before using the tag? U must unlock first or the tag wont work
Yes, I try it after unlocked screen. I am not able to say when NFC fails or woks, but I try to read tags with unlocked screen.
Thanks

For me, mine I think is a little loose. I cna read NFC tags if I put it near my camera and press it really hard against the phone. That seems to push the NFC chip back into place and I hear the "Boop" when it detects the chip. A fully working will beep instantly upon contact.

Obviously that would mean a hardware issue. In my case, doing always the same I get different results. I don't press the tag against the phone, and trying with the same tag I don't get the same result (sometimes reads the tag and sometimes not). It's crazy.
I haven't been able to get nfc to work either. I don't have any proper tags but I tried my MasterCard paypass that worked fine in the past. Can somebody with working NFC try to scan their MasterCard with paypass and let me know if it works?

GPS problem - compass facing seems to add 45 degrees CW to whatever it should be. This causes a lot of problems with GPS. Tried resetting the compass with the 3 axis spin trick. Tried resetting gps using gps status and ##4772579#. No change. Downgraded Maps to original. Solves some problems but not all. Mainly the downgraded maps seems to respect directional travel as an indication of bearing.
Has anyone seen this? Any ideas how to fix?
There are a few gps calibration apps in the playstore.. Whether they work or not is another story, but maybe try one out and see..

Tried many. Thinking maybe a hardware problem. I set it next to an HTC EVO and the numbers come up close to 45deg estimate off in every app. Weird and annoying.
NFC on HTC One has issues. My device for one doesn't show any NFC icon on the status bar when switched ON and there is no Android beam option at all. Please share any information on the NFC feature in this thread. Thanks

And what kind of issue is that ? Mine doesn't show it too and I'm very happy it doesn't (why would one want another place in status bar taken ?). Also, why do you need Android Beam option ? If you tick the NFC option, everything works as it's supposed to, doesn't it ?
Well i tried with other phones, it doesn't detect my phone, i tried with other HTC One user too.........will it detect like bluetooth or should we add the devices and thereon proceed? But i've seen in forums with other users getting this icon, so i thought mine isnt working. I tried to pair with Sony devices and it didnt detect mine.

Mine doesn't show the icon as well and everything works fine (GSM 4.2.2). I can use NFC in order to connect and beam to my galaxy nexus without problems. The only thing is that the NFC chip in the One sits right behin the camery, while in other phones its inside the battery. So you have to position the phones right.

Just now tried with XperiaS..... it doesn't even detect, the range for NFC to work should be 20cms right? I tried with other HTC One as well.

20 cm? Not really. 20 mm maybe.
Hold the phones back to back.
I think there isnt a 'n' logo in 4.2.2 because a lot of people who updated to 4.3 from it were asking what the n logo was but still nfc is on just no status bar logo?

Yeah i guess its 20mm, it worked fine when i joined the nfc modules face to face without any distance it worked, with Xperia S. :good:

On my GSM One this N(escafe)-icon was added with 4.2.2 update, but it has been removed by a minor update only some days later. Maybe some carrier models didn't receive that minor update or skipped the first one.

That's the way it works On some devices you also need to know where the NFC chip is. On One it's placed right above the camera, while most other phones have the NFC integrated into their battery (GNex). So you might have to hold the devices in an awkward way in order to get a connection.
Hi All,
I have a brand new Z1 from China.
I had Android 4 something. I have user USB cable and PC Companion to flash the latest system 5 something.
To be honest with you I have not tested compass on the previous system, but the device is not even detected in Service Menu.
I can see that gyroscope is working fine, but compass is like non existent.
I have noticed that first when I could not use my Google Navigation. I thought that it will work using GPS coordinates, but compass seems to be one of the essential components of this software and there is no backup engine.
Please advise what should I do next as this is weird. I have a Motorola Goto and this phone works flawlessly comparing to surprises I have with Xperia.
Thank you

Thank you for your answer.
In all the specs I have checked it is showing that the compass is included and sensor-wise it is not different from Motorola I have both were released roughly in the same time.
I come across a forum discussion where people say that they lost compass after upgrade from Android 4 to 5 possibly due to firmware issue.
