Short question list about building apps (URGENT) - Off-topic

Hi, my name is Gazi and I’m an 18 year old student (economics) in the Netherlands.
I’m working on a business plan for a schoolproject. We’ve got to write a business plan of a product we want to launch. After brainstorming for a couple of days I got the idea to launch a mobile application for students at our school.
For my business plan I need 2 people to answers some questions of mine, so I can get more information about the financial and technical feasibility. I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to answer a couple of questions for me. I was actually going to ask these questions to an app builder from the Netherlands, but he just called me telling me he doesn’t have any time anymore, and I need to finish this asap because the business plan needs to be finished this Friday.
It would probably not even take 10 min to answer these questions and I would really really appreciate it if you guys could help me out.
I will first give some general information about the idea of the application I have in mind:
I want to call this app ‘’App2Date’’. The purpose of App2Date will be to make it easier for students to study. It’s the solution for problems which many students are coping with. App2Date will have functions such as:
- The ability for teachers to let students know when they will not be at school, or are too late (for example, because of traffic). Many students of our school have got to travel around 1hr til they’re at school. It sucks to hear the teachers not there after having traveled for over an hour at 7AM.
- Giving push notifications of important messages on ELO (ELO is our ‘’electronical study environment’’ which is accessible via internet right now. We can see announcements teachers have published, and have access to study material such as powerpoints and word doc.s
These functions are the 2 functions we definitely want to use in the app. IF it is possible (technically and financially) there are some other features we would like to use:
- Push notifications from Osiris (Osiris is the online database with our results  accessible via internet atm)
- Having access to your timetable
I understand you can not give precise answers at some questions (for example the financial ones), that’s okay’. I don’t need precise answers. I just want to have an idea of what amount of money I should think, would it cost more than 1000$, more than 10.000$, or just 200$, etc.
Questions:
Orientation
- For how long have you been building apps?
- Do you operate in some kind of category apps (games, social media, etc.)?
- Do you make applications for your own, or do you mostly make applications for companies who ask you to?
Costs (general)
- What’s the average price for building an application?
o One off costs
o Fixed costs
o Other costs?
- Is it much more expensive to build an app that is connected with the internet?
- Which criteria are most important for the price of building an applications?
App2Date in general
- What is your first impression of App2Date?
- Do you think there is a market for App2Date?
o Why?
- How long do you think it will take to build an application such as App2Date?
Technical
- Is it possible to make so many different external systems work together in 1 mobile app?
- Is this possible by linking the app to these external systems, or would it mean you’d have to build different systems within the app itself?
- Is there a function of which you think it would be impossible to make it work?
- If you would have to make a top 3 of the functions you think that would take least effort to build in the app, what would your top 3 be like?
Choose from:
 Notifications from teachers who are late
 Notifications from announcements from ELO
 Online database with your results
 Timetable
 Ability to check if there are any classrooms free (this can now only be seen by the schools system)
Financial
- What do you think it would cost to build App2Date with the functions I would definitely want to use? (notifications from announcements on ELO + notifications from teachers)?
- Which functions would cost the most (and about how much? $1000, $100? Etc.)
- If you would have to make a top 3 of the functions you think that would financially be feasible the best, what would your top 3 be like?
Choose from:
 Notifications from teachers who are late
 Notifications from announcements from ELO
 Online database with your results
 Timetable
 Ability to check if there are any classrooms free (this can now only be seen by the schools system)
- Could you tell me, for each function, what you think it would cost (about how much?)
- How do YOU think it would be the best to make money out of this?
Again, I would really appreciate it if you could answer these questions to me. You’d be my lifesaver. Also I didn't know if this was the right place to post this thread, so apologies if this is in the wrong section.
Thanks in advance

No way I am going to read that. TL;DR Please.

aaaannnnddd u just had to bump the thread, didnt u? :silly::good:

If you want your app to go international, I'll change the name. An app called "App2Date" that involves students and teachers will be looked down on in the states. To date in the USA means to be in a relationship not conducive to education, if you know what I mean.

@ OP...go here and post your question and concerns.

Mortgage Payment Calculator needed for Pocket PC

I'm a loan officer, looking for a basic Mortgage Payment Calculator for my Tilt. I saw several software programs available after doing a google browse. Just wanted to get some input from other pocket pc users. I don't need anything fancy just some thing basic to calculate Rate/Term & Interest Only payments while away from my office. I don't mind paying for the software but of course would prefer a trial version first.
Any suggestions?
I know I'm not the only mortgage guy with a Kaiser/Tilt that's still afloat in this ugly market ; )
Its you're lucky day..

Hey Roadmenace...
I'm a loan officer cum realtor and have been using the best one that was ever created for pocket pc. How I know this is because I've tried pretty much each and every title thats available on handango/pocketgear.com over the past 4 or so years.. yup! that means from the days of WM2003. And its pretty ironic that having tried some costing as much as $50, the best one was and is totally free.
It was written by one Greg Fischer from Australia, a mortgage rep himself based down under. Its called mortgage calc and I believe it had over a million or so downloads to its name on the above sites back in the days.
However, the person stopped updating it beyond its 3.4 build for over a year and that too for just WM2003se. After a hiatus of over a year and my persistent googling I found his amateur site again and he had actually re-written the whole thing for WM5/6 and its now version 3.5
Sorry for the lesson in history.. I had to cuz if you'd known about it, the software was literally a "living legend" in its category.
Some of the fancy calculators built in it are no longer there for the WM5/6 versions but its still hands down the best you're gonna find hands down.
Here's the link to the website:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~gm_fisher/Main.htm
and I'm attaching the .cab as well.
A great free option is Microsoft Excel. You can set it up to calculate any of the variables that you mention - rate, # of payments, necessary downpayment, etc. You can also use it for irregular mortgage terms as well. If you are not proficient in Excel, you can download templates directly from Microsoft or from www.vertex42.com (or just do a google search).
This is a great, free option (I think that Excel is the best software ever created, so I am a little bias) IMHO.
Excel is VERY useful. I don't know if it's the best though... I pick notepad.
I am wondering with the difference between a mortgage
Hi, I am wondering with the difference between a mortgage APR and Interest Rate? My mortgage interest rate is 6.875% and the APR is 7.504% does the APR of 7.504% sound right if the interest rate is 6.875%? My mom said that the 2 numbers should be closer together than that. Also, my mortgage banker never mentioned an APR, and since we are 1st time home buyer's, we were unaware of it. We only knew about the Interest rate. Can you please help me?

A Surge in Teleworking

I read several news recently about the surge in oil prices has led to an increase in teleworking. A BusinessWeek article indicates that many corporations are cutting international business travel by as mush as 50% and adopting virtual meeting tools instead. The numbers from an AFP press kinda surprise me. It says that the potential for telecommuting could apply to 25% of the US workforce and the saving is calculated to be at least 3.9 billion dollars.
I has benefited from teleworking for years. I chose to work from home at least one or two days when my company just started the flexible work program in 2002. At first it wasn’t very easy for me and my colleagues to get used to it. But thanks to the new technology, it has made my work so much easier and it seems to be more recommendatory than 6 years ago.
I made a list for my friend concluding some online meeting and collaboration tools that a new teleworker may need. I hope you would find it helpful too.
1. Skype / Freeware
http://www.skype.com/
One of the best tool for free internet phone calls. Everybody should’ve heard of it. It has the best voice quality among other IMs.
2. GoToMeeting / Shareware
http://www.gotomeeting.com/
It’s a professional web conferencing tool with good quality and multiple functions such as screen sharing and collaboration. I think it’s a good meeting solution especially when you are looking for meeting software with large group of attendee capacity. GoToMeeting however is a little bit pricey. After 30 days free trial, the monthly plan is $49/month.
3. Weboffice / Shareware
http://www.weboffice.com/
Weboffice is a web-based task management tool. You can share documents, calendars, and database on it. 30-day trial available, $59.95/mo to buy.
4. Gogrok / Freeware
http://www.gogrok.com/
Real-time collaboration tool. It has multi-user co-editing, application sharing, and screen sharing functions. Gogrok is free and handy. If you don’t need a big and pricey software to get the job done, Gogrok would be a good option for you.
5. Convenos / Shareware
http://www.convenos.com/
A web-based meeting and collaboration software. Convenos is trying to put everything you need for online collaboration into one single program such as whiteboard, polling, media sharing, and calendaring…etc. after 14 days free try out, it’ll be $30/mo for standard edition.

[APP]The Stock Game

Hi,
I want to introduce my new App ‘The Stock Game’. It’s available in Marketplace in a free and a commercial version, just if you don’t like ads in a program.
As the name says, you can simulate trading with all stocks around the world. But still remember, it’s just a game. So you can’t win real money, but you can’t lose too.
The app is highly rated in Germany, maybe users in other countries feel in the same way.
Top Features:
- Create user accounts to test different strategies
- search stocks worldwide
- buy and sell in all important currencies of the world, always with the actual stock quotation and exchange rate (only 15 minutes delayed)
- watch the charts of all stocks
- watch the chart development to your portfolio
- ranking list of the most successful players
- look at the portfolio of the top 100 players
- see the stock indices of the world, complete with charts
- on the app tile, you see all the time your actual account value
If I wakened your interest, look in marketplace
Greetings
Hanno
You have awoken my interest, i'm gonna try it, sounds intersting to see, wether one understands the stock market...
I downloaded this game from the market place a few days ago, and it is GREAT!
There was a slight server issue yesterday (where my portfolio showed $0) but otherwise i reccomend this to anyone
Hi irdawood,
I'm pleased that you like my program, did you give me already a rating in marketplace?
I know the problem with the 0 portfolio, but still it's not absolutely clear what the reason is. May a temporary problem with the internet connection. But it's appears not too often I think.
In some time an update will come with some interesting features, e.g. the price agent
Greetings
Hanno
cant seem to sell my stock only the buy option is available cant slide to right or left..
Nice game!
@sunspark,
sorry, my answer is a little delayed.
To sell stocks, you have to pick on the right side of the screen. Left side is to buy. I think when you done it once, it's clearly. To do it this way was a proposal from one of my beta testers and I built it in. I hope, beside this, you enjoy the game
Greetings
Hanno
After one year successful on the market and a lot of new features since initial release, I think it’s worse to give a little update about new features of my app.
Of course there are a lot of stock market apps around, but still none of them offers the features you’ll find here. Stock trading in not easy, here you can learn, and not only by yourself, you are part of a community of players and you can watch what they are doing. In the chat room you can discuss your thoughts about your strategies and ask other.
Here’s a list of the top features:
- Create multiple user accounts to test different strategies
- Select your preferred currency
- Search stocks worldwide
- Buy and sell all important currencies of the world, always with the actual stock quotation and exchange rates
- Watch the charts of all stocks, currencies and important indices
- Trade with commodities
- Watch the chart development to your portfolio
- Trace your trade history and all trades of all other players
- See the ranking list of all players, climbers and losers of last week and month and what the most popular stocks of all players are
- Look at the portfolio of all players
- Try high risk trading with short selling
- See the stock indices and currencies of the world, complete with charts
- The price agent watches any stocks and informs you when a fixed limit is reached
- On the app tile, you see all the time your actual account value and information from the price agent
- Create live tiles of your most interested stocks. See prices and the charts direct on the start screen of your device
- Choose your preferred start cash
- Visit the chat room
If you have further question about my app, fell free to ask
Greetings
Hanno
The Stock Game is voted number 2 in the wmpoweruser survey for best games, look on the WMPoweruser site.
Greetings
Hanno
Looks quite nice! One question! What kind of stocks are available in your game? Because now I am playing Stock Trading simulator by Trading Game and there are included stocks like Google, Apple, Tesla, Exxon, Nike and Disney, but that is not enough for me. Is your offer much wider choice, because I would really like to trade other stocks too.

Who wants to be in podcast/video show?

Attention Mods/XDA staff. We have permission from svetius to post this here. I wasn't sure about doing this either, so I made sure to ask first. We will not directly link to our site so that we do not leech traffic from XDA. We aren't trying to compete with XDA either. We are looking for interns/unpaid staff interested in tech and mobile news, so the job board doesn't fit us.
Alright guys, here's the deal. I'm looking for video/podcast personalities for a website I'm involved in. The site is Install or Not dot com. I'm not linking to it directly so we don't get in trouble with XDA by leeching their traffic.
If you are interested in becoming a personality and can commit to several hours a week in recording audio and/or video, please post a reply here, and we'll talk about it.
There are three unpaid positions available at the moment. We're looking for video personalities, podcast personalities, and media editors. Requirements for the positions are listed below. You may be able to do more than one thing if you want to and are good enough.
All positions must adhere to the following rules:
- You MUST be able to commit at least five hours per week to recording and researching the shows.
- Media editors may need to commit ten or so hours, depending on skill if they are doing shows as well. You need to be available during the week and on weekends.
- You must be able to work within the site guidelines that we set.
- You must be able to be fair and unbias in your discussions. I don't care if you hate Windows Phone, iOS, or Android. You have to be a fair reporter.
To apply for a spot, please prepare a sample of your ability for me to preview.
Podcast sample should feature you talking about two different articles of your choosing for a minimum of ten minutes. Podcasts are meant for spinning out the news and discussing it with others. Try to put your own spin on the news. Make it entertaining. It doesn't need to be funny, it just needs to hold my attention. Feel free to work on submissions as a team if you know other people who want to be involved.
Video samples should follow the same guidelines as the podcast. I'd prefer to see a ten minute video of you talking about a few articles or topics that interest you. Videos are more generally targeted than podcasts. Again, this needs to be interesting and entertaining. it does not need to be funny, it just needs to hold the viewer's attention. Videos are solo pieces.
Editors should either team up with others who are submitting clips, or make a work on their own from the podcast and video guidelines. If you have prior experience in editing, you may submit any prior work as well, so long as it is appropriate. (no porn )
FYI: The positions are unpaid internships.
Site guidelines are set by myself and the owner. They may change from time to time, but you will always know in advance. Generally, just use common sense. It's not MTV or Cinemax; it's a tech news blog.
We don't want excessive profanity in any media on the site. A few bad words throughout the media is fine, but nothing excessive, and nothing horrible. If you can't say it on cable TV, you can't say it on our site either.
Be open to new ideas and other operating systems or OEMs. I don't care how much iOS pisses you off, or how bad Samsung screwed you over on a phone. You will report on the news in a fair and balanced manner. This includes reporting on iOS, Apple, Motorola, RIM, webOS, Symbian, and anything else you can think of that might make you cringe. If you can't wrap your head around being fair to everyone, do not apply.
I too being involved in the site can say, this may look like not such an appealing postition for now, as it's unpaid - but we will surely value your contribution, which can in future but you on our regular team.
Some of the incentives of doing the job are:
Attend tech events
Gadgets to review
Meet big shots of the tech arena
Make a name and get fame for yourself
Adds value to your CV, which employer would not like a person who is popular on the internet ? This might become your full time job, who knows ?
A business card with a fancy position
An identity which can never be erased, yes that's the beauty of the internet - you might be gone and forgotten in the world, but on the internet your name and work will always stay !
And some other perks too, which I'd rather not mention on a public domain.
Besides, I would also like to tell you, you don't need to be a pro at anything to do this job, just be enthusiastic, dedicated and responsible - though you should know tech and shall be able to speak english !
Age, Nationality, Location, Occupation or Gener all of those do not matter as far as you can do the job !
So hit us up if you think you are in for it !
PS: If you think, audio or video is a bit too steep you can even write for us
Bump to the top.
Okay guys. I would like to participate in it. As you previously said that we can even write articles for you, I might be interested
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
Back to the top.
If you guys know anyone who might be interested in doing this, please send them here as well.
Bump to the top, for the interested lot ! Send those PMs right away

Too ugly for on air but yes I am interested in a writer position. Unpaid is completely fine with me. Plus a bump for old xda'er buds.

Patriotic, and seeking help from XDA developers to recapture some of my freedoms -- through diminishing personal information collection on my devices.

Completely computer code illiterate. Have some rudimentary knowledge of computer use ......but, .....that's about it.
Bought an LG V40 ThinQ, SKU: LMV405QA7 .AUSABK, in 2019 directly from the manufacturer. I never activated it, never used it. It's been sitting, brand new in the box, ever since. I didn't want to go the same route I did prior -- allowing all the outside control of my device -- facilitating all the snooping upon me, i.e. data collection of my private personal information ......and life.
I have spent the duration of time, since purchase of this phone, attempting to educate myself; as to, how to free myself of the surveilance on me by corporate America.
Unfortunately, I have since learned: the LG V40 was much more complicated to take control of, than other phones. Atleast, more than the general skill set of the layman would allow.
I am here seeking the knowledge and power of XDA's developers, to free myself, like so many others -- and protect what remain of my civil liberties, from the surveillance state.
Respectfully,
Alex
Welcome to XDA.
If you're concerned about privacy I would unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM without Google services. It won't be perfect but a little less data will be transferred. Maybe something like a PinePhone would be better for privacy, or better yet an old time "dumbphone"...
You should be able to find most of the info you need in the LG V40 section of the forums. Check it out...
And just a heads-up: keep the politics off the forum. To quote the forum rules:
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and / or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive and therefore, none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.

Again, welcome and I hope you have a good experience here on XDA.
Step 1 - abandon or delete FB, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp etc accounts.
Extreme - Get burner phone with prepaid minutes paid with cash. Power down when not using. Don't use at home or familiar/same locations. Toss as needed, repeat
They use voice recognition algorithms so they can likely ID you by voice probably in real time.
NASA surveillance has been online for a while now... and is far more capable than they like you to know. It effectively has unlimited storage capacity for all voice calls, text, internet activity and more.

Thank you much for your reply, guidance, and help, Didgeridoohan.
I was happy to see, layman or not, I was, atleast, on the right track with some things. I have been utilizing the "dumb phones". Mostly, flip phones from yester-year; mostly a decade old or more. The problem I am running into with those: the 2G and 3G bands they operate on are being discontinued by more and more cellular providers. By some time in 2022, most of my dumb phones will nolonger be operational.
Regarding the Pine phone, is was nice to see, I was on the right track there. I will indeed continue to investigate that phone, and see what is possible there.
I'd love to unlock the bootloader of my LG V40, and install that Googleless ROM, as suggested. It looks pretty complicated to accomplish though, on a LG V40 (unlocked, US version); and, I am a likely brick candidate, if there ever was one. Hoping to figure out what is possible for me by talking to you guys; then, move on from there, to what I can safely accomplish myself.
I'd love to get Microsoft and Google off my machines and devices; and, still have decent avenues to keep doing the stuff I have been doing. Speaking of which, any recommendations for the computer programming ignorant and novice still wanting near Microsoft OS capability and functionality, without all the snooping, in a replacement OS for their desktop and laptop??
Thanks Didgeridoohan,
ALEX

Thank you for the empowerment Black Hawk.
Definitely understand why you are calling my attention to the social media apps ......what aren't they collecting about your communications with others?!
I as well understand: why you are steering me towards prepaid phone accounts, funded in cash only. I additionally understand why you are suggesting keeping my phone powered off, and using it only in unfrequented places. Lastly, getting rid of the device, and starting over with a fresh device periodically, understand as well. All powerful recommendations, if higher levels of privacy are valued. Thank you much!
NASA surveillance, and their capabilities .......effectly, databasing any and all forms of communication between human beings .......is scary stuff. I only wonder: who has access, for what purposes; and, does this access include private corporations .......and what might those corporations be using this database for?
I am continuing to review and think about your latest suggestions, and will comment later. How may I private message you, if possible, and you allow it?
Your input has been greatly appreciated, my friend.

I'm being somewhat sarcastic about the paid phone apps. Really if you are under their suspicion and a high value target... they can be quit adaptable with a lot of resources at their disposal.
I wasn't being sarcastic about FB etc, pure poison. Don't dime yourself out... social malware.

The usage of voice recognition technology, by the telecommunication companies, and others, is a real scary thing; and, I believe: most of the public is not aware of this fact. This technology, and its wide spread usage, across our telecommunication networks, represents a direct assault on our freedom of speech, and right to privacy, as we attempt to communicate privately with our fellow citizens, in a supposedly, free society. The fact, the government, and corporations operating in the private sector, have access to, and are scrutinizing, communications between private citizens, who have not been convicted in a court of law as being involved in criminal or terroristic activity; or, even had been benefit of the judicial process, as they are unknowingly being spied upon......is.....
...diabolical ..........and certainly, ............anti-American.
Well again this is a technical forum.

I understand, now, you were being a little "tongue and cheeck" with me; but, I think: your recommendations still apply, for anyone trying to understand: what it would take, not to be tracked easily. I as well understand: later, what you were alluding to, and your overall point -- about the magnitude of surveillance resources that could be brought to bare against you; if, you were quite important, to substantial figures.

Not exactly. My PC is always offline, but that's simply because it's mission doesn't require internet connection so it's a needless liability.
All else applies in that statement.

Again, welcome and I hope you have a good experience here on XDA.

With all due respect, we live in a pervasive, corrupt corporate and political technocracy that has weaponized our phones, and all technology, to surveil and track our every move, views, opinions, activities, locations. The Borg is exempt from this illegal invasion of privacy and operates in secrecy with impunity for their tyrannical crimes against humanity. Ignoring this tragic reality is why our privacy, rights, and freedoms are all being stripped away. Those who bury their head in the sand and refuse to wake up to this travesty and resist on all relative platforms. Are useful idiot slaves who are playing right into their hands and are assimilated by the Borg! Just keeping it real because this harsh reality must be spread far and wide since capitulation is assimilation and assimilation is extermination. Comply and you Die!

Good thing that the Borg are fictitious then...
Still, my original statement stands: leave the politics out of any discussions/posts on XDA. It's perfectly possible to discuss privacy concerns without bringing up politics...

Obviously the Borg taken from Star Trek is fictitious but it's a single word representation of a conglomeration of secret societies. That includes the Freemasons, Jesuits, Illuminati and other psychopathic death cults with an anti human, genocidal agenda.
Your name implies you reside or are from Australia which is being overtaken and decimated by them. In part because the good people of Australia have fallen right into their trap. Which includes spinning and twisting words to subvert the truth and distort reality. Such as inferring the use of this fictitious title to describe a conglomeration of very real, nefarious, evil, elements. Ridiculously suggests I'm some psychotic conspiracy theorist that blurs the lines between truth and fiction.
The distinction's very clear to me because I'm awake to reality unlike the masses that are like lemmings running straight off a cliff to their death. I'll leave it at that.
