Hi
I have just installed avatar rom on my n7000
i have also nova launcher
I did for the first 24 not have any soft keys
but suddnely the soft keys appeared on my screen?
how can i get rid of them?
Go to settings, hybrid properties (paranoid preferences) then slide to the right and go to interface and in the navbar size, make it to 0% and you'll be rid of those soft keys. Hit thanks if this helps.

these are the soft keys i am talking about.
i guess i am happy now, since it solved itselfe.
but i dont know how i got them to appear or disappear.
Yes those keys are the one's that we get with paranoid android based ROMs usually, they have been ported to the avatar ROM i guess. To disable them if they appear in future, look out for a setting related to navigation bar in the settings. Btw how's the stability and battery life of the ROM?

Thanks (i will push, not just say).
I have only had the ROM for a day and that day i have been home... So cant speak about stability and battery life.
I have ordered a new battery aswell. So hopefully with the new battery, new rooted phone and new ROM i will have a great phone
I am really tho looking for ROMs for Galaxy Note that is slim and makes it really fast and smooth.
That is the main goal why i rooted the phone. I hate that it lags and takes time to open simple apps like the borwser. Wait for it to load to be able to type an URL...

Does everyone realize that on a stock rooted nook, if you swipe right to left on the status bar on the bottom, it's a 'back' button? I don't get why soft keys is necessary. I shut it down on both my nooks and have never once needed it. Just extra overhead, to me...
Can someone educate me as to why this program is so 'important'?

Full screen apps like angry birds? I also fail to see why this issue was so important to you that you had to make a thread about it. Softkeys is an optional app, you don't have to install it yourself.
I personally use Button Savior, less noticeable and easy to access.

Button Savior looks like much nicer than Soft Keys - what basic steps to remove Soft Keys and run Button Savior instead? Any gotchas? Im also using the Gingerbread keyboard and hope this change wont affect that?

I can always use the home button (and then a task killer if needed) to get out of the few full screen apps that won't let me back out.
But softkeys is part of the autonooter package, which a lot of people use - I didn't specifically install it. I haven't used the other 'packages' - not sure if it's included there as well. It's positioned as a "must have", but doesn't really seem to be. So someone thought it was important enough to include there and so I wanted to know why.
Gee. I'm sorry. I guess I'm not allowed to ask questions? Should I ask you if you deem an issue important first before I ask a question in the future?
Here's my next question - let me know if it's important enough: Why did you have to be an ass about my previous question?

No offense timekeeper but I was wondering the same thing, so I found this helpful.
It's not just the back key that's important.
Most apps have additional functionality that you can only access via the 'menu' key.
That's the one I find most needed.

Ditto. Soft Keys does a passable job, but the attractive design and customizability of Button Savior makes it a better choice.
I wasn't a fan of the softkey button size and could never find a place on screen that i liked it. Button Savior is much better. Both add a huge amount of functionality to a rooted NC.
Except you don't see any silly on-screen buttons with SoftKeys if you set it up properly.. Then you just press the N key once or twice, depending upon config, to get the pop-up with back, menu, etc..

As for the Op saying "Can't I ask questions?" Sure you can, just don't act like a free piece of software which is VERY useful is somehow killing you .

Just make sure you have USB debugging enabled. You don't have to uninstall softkeys, just disable it. Button Savior should run normally from startup and shouldn't affect anything else.

I didn't know you could swipe to go back, so thanks for that.
There are some apps that run full screen and the status bar isn't visible which then you would need either soft keys or button savior.
I went ahead and uninstalled SoftKeys. Button Savior rocks.
Hi!
I've been searching all over for this and couldn't find anything... I have a Samsung GT-PT1010 (forgotten device) which can't be upgraded to ICS and I'm not inclined to upgrade it to Gingerbread. However using imitation ICS settings app and the Go HD Launcher makes it pretty usable.
Only thing missing is the bottom-left corner Back, Home, Apps Running buttons! Does anyone know of such an app or maybe some mode of customization to imitate these buttons? The device in built buttons are simply inconvenient.
thanks for any pointers!!!

Hi there,
I have kinda the same problem with my P1010 but for a different reason. My capacitive navigation buttons have started to die, so I decided to use something called Button Saviour. You can customize it to look like the navigational soft keys on many different devices including the stock android and HTC style buttons. Hope this helps!
I will check this out, thank you!
Hi Guys,
The bottom of my screen (about 5mm) has become unresponsive to touch. In previous ROM's I've got around this by adding a navbar to the bottom of the screen which I don't use (as in the soft key buttons).
I've just installed a Sense 5 ROM (InsertCoin) and really like the feel of it, however I can't find any way to get the navbar at the bottom of the screen. Obviously as it's a sense rom, there is nothing in the settings, and I've tried putting qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 into the build.prop file but that has also not worked :/
Does anyone have a solution to this or a way to cut the bottom 5mm of the visible screen? Or even better, a way to get the bottom of the screen working?
Cheers,
Tom

If you're running 4.18.401.2 then you're in the wrong section, this is the One section not the One X.
Go over there and do a search for return to stock, you should find all the info you need.
So usually I can add qumu.hw.mainkeys=0 on the build prop, or download softkey enabler app and it usually adds soft keys after a reboot. But now if I do EITHER of those, it just says system ui crashed and I gotta press ok and then a second later it pops up again. and again.
I added soft keys on my S4, S5 and my M7 before and I never ran into this. Does anyone else have any solutions? I don't really like those pop up types, I like the stock android soft keys.
whats wrong with the soft keys that are already on the phone?

That's not good news. I was planning on upgrading to the note 4 soon. Developer may have to update the module. Sorry it didn't work.

Did you come up with a solution to enable softkeys? I'm in the same camp.
What about the built-in softkeys? Settings -> One-handed operation -> Side key panel?

I found GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys but I noticed a drop in my battery life ever since I started using it.
It can auto hide or keep it there forever but it does get in a way with some apps like when you try to text or type it's right on top of the space bar

Thanks for the suggestion. It is now showing Android 5.0 symbols after I unistalled the app. Weird. I'll show you a screenshot.
I could not figure out how to enable soft keys and after uninstaling app the Android 5.0 soft keys showed up. Really weird.

Is it working? and what launcher are you using?
I would love this too. I like having a little bit of bezel at the bottom that I can hold (without hitting buttons), but the Note's capacitive keys are just in the way. I don't mind the Home button and would leave that enabled (maybe bound to something else if possible). Another reason is that I'm left-handed and HATE the "back" button being on the right side instead of left (which I'm used to since all of my previous devices were set up like this -- Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), Moto X (2013), Nexus 7 (v2), and LG G2 w/modded keys).
Lastly, I really like adding additional navring options besides the built-in Google Now shortcut. There must be a way to get the default Android on screen keys with root and xposed, right? I hope someone figures it out!

Were you able to fix the problem of it overlapping the keyboard?
O.k., call me OCD, set in my ways, or just plain stubborn, but I simply hate having a recents button in the navbar. I'd much rather have a menu button, and long press the home button to get recents, hearkening back to my old Galaxy SIII. Now, I've flashed countless ROM's on the Nexus 6, and have come across only two that allow the ability to eliminate any button and replace it with anything else. See screenshot for an example of what I'm looking for. Most of the marshmallow ROM's out there only allow you to move the buttons around, and add buttons to the navbar, but none allow you to eliminate or remap the buttons that are already there except for VRToxin. So here are my questions: 1) Why is this kind of customization not found in many ROM's? 2) Is there a mod, or Xposed module that will allow this? I looked at Gravity Box and it doesn't seem to have that ability. Any thoughts/wisdom/comiseration would be appreciated.

1. most likely it isnt needed by many people
2. i dont use xposed for many reasons, but one thing is that xposed is not recommended to be run on a custom rom, as it could, and would, mess with that roms code, causing issues and/or reboots.

Try Dirty Unicorns. It has a feature called smart bar and you can add and remove buttons to the nav bar. Its still in the test phase but pretty solid.

Go to their Google + site to get the latest test builds. The Marshmallow builds are not official so not on XDA yet.

I have found one other rom that had the ability to change the navbar but in the last build the feature is gone again. I keep an eye on that rom as i'm searching for the same things as you. It was the last experimental build of "srewd" rom.
If you find a rom yourself please report here
You mentioned gravity box. Gravitybox will let you assign single tap, double tap, and long press actions to navbar buttons. Up to 5 buttons (recent, home, back, menu, custom) with up to three actions each. (Although single tap is slower if a double tap is assigned). You can assign built in actions or apps or shortcuts.
That's a lot of flexibility. The only thing you can't do is change the symbol for those buttons. I guess that's the part you want that gb didn't have?
That would work. I don't care about the symbol as long as the action can be reassigned. Is that GB marshmallow?
Only two I know of are Slim LP and VR toxin. I'm on VR toxin now, which is a great ROM, but security is broken, no pin or pattern unlock.

I'll keep my eye on it.
Even with gravity box, looks like the changes don't stick. Even when another action is assigned, that pesky recent button still brings up recents. It was worth a try.
For now I may just revert back to Slim LP, and hope Yank gets a Slim6 build up soon.
The recents button, and what it should do is considered basic functionality and it's deep in the SystemUI app (which is more like a service). I've changed my navigation bar by adding a permanent menu button and a lot of functionality there is hard coded. So I recommend you build you own rom and customize it.
Mine sticks. Reboot, still there.
I don't know why yours acts differently....
I use a lot of gravity box tweaks and they all work the way they're supposed to for me, except notification shade quick toggle tiles. Reverts to stock after reboot... I have to go back into the gb quick setting menu and press save to get my tiles back after reboot
