Since the vibrant doesn't have a secondary input like most android devices, it's even more vital that we have unfettered access to the keyboard and its soft arrow keys. Unfortunately long pressing the menu button in some applications (notably the browser) brings up SEARCH rather than the keyboard by itself. That means no arrow keys for text selection or link highlighting.
This has been discussed previously in general at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776792
How difficult would it be to remap the long press of the menu key to bring up the keyboard by itself?
After researching it some on my own, it looks like I need to come up with a way to call showSoftInput() from one of the softkeys. It'd be ideal if I could get that to happen on menu long press, but if that's too far buried in proprietary configuration I'd settle for replacing the google voice search app mapped to the Search button long press.
Anyone have any tips on mapping system functions to a hardware key normally used for app launching? The lack of any keyboard in the browser is seriously inhibiting my ability to use this phone.

dxtop takes over the long press of buttons only in the home screen context, and it doesn't use any of them to launch the keyboard. Plus there's no way to configure any of it so it's not really the same at all.
What I'm looking for is to alter one of the long press actions in a system-wide way to launch the soft keyboard.

Have you tried emailing Anderweb? ADW launcher intercepts the home button. You might be able to do something similar. It might only work on the home screen though, as his app is running there. For a system wide thing you might need to mod the underlying OS files, framework maybe? I'm not sure where that stuff launches. You could try asking one of the Cyanogen devs, they might have found it. They add stuff to the power button long press menu at least.
Certain apps (Visual Task Switcher and Itching Thumb) remap the search and home buttons to open themselves. I imagine this same idea could be used for the menu button, but I've never seen it.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
some success...
Well I got a little app to work at opening the keyboard on long press of the SEARCH key. I don't want to override the home function, which is what ADW for instance does. The only other button that has an available intent as far as I can tell is search. This is my first java anything, so I wouldn't expect much out of it (it may not even work on anyone's phone but mine) but maybe someone with better android chops can use it as a proof-of-concept for what I was thinking. Install it and when you long press the search key you can choose "Search for Keyboard!"
One pretty major caveat... the swype soft cursor doesn't act anything like I'd wanted when I was envisioning this. There's no "execute" button that works like a click, so while you can use the soft arrows to select links it's not gonna do you much good. Also there's no way to effectively use "select text" in the browser. Concept 2, if I ever get around to it, would probably be more like a replacement touchpad area below the current application window.
i would like to see an app to remap long press menu on my i9000, anyone has success? thx
Another reason to ditch Samsung firmware and use AOSP-based ROMs, like CyanogenMod or MIUI.
FYI, nearly every "ROM" made for Galaxy S phones are Samsung firmware. They're not built from source like ROMs for other decent Android phones, they are just original Samsung builds being modified like nuts. And they use the same Samsung framework (though usually customized for themes and removing of annoyances like battery-full popup), and usually still include most of Samsung's stupid fixes that make their Galaxy S system software the most different in structure compared to any other Android system.
By using AOSP firmware like CyanogenMod and MIUI, these problems (like menu-button keyboard binding getting screwed up by Samsung) don't exist, because they were never present in official Android release. When problems do come up for AOSP, they get fixed quick because the source code is actually available.
Summarized process of development:
Samsung-based ROMs: What's broken or runs like ****? Try to fix it. Hack hack hack, hope it works, if it fails try again. Submit to XDA
CyanogenMod (in general): If there is a problem, try to fix it. Write code, build, test. Make sure it works before putting it in "stable" branch. After that think of brand new useful feature to implement, code it, bug test a lot, request it to be used in official releases or just make your own CyanogenMod-based ROM with your own enhancements, like BiffMod for the HTC Dream.
Btw, the reason why Samsung put this keybind is because the original international Galaxy S doesn't have a dedicated search key, so they set the search function up with the menu button. Our problem is that Samsung was a lazyass and forgot to change back that binding to the original for the Vibrant, which does have a dedicated search button and doesn't need the menu binding to search.
But aosp roms have other problems like poor 3d performance and no gps/compass. If the issues get worked out, I suspect many devs will be switching to aosp builds.
is it possible to get the same softkeys from the archos 70 series onto the nook. im not really a fan of the current soft key solutions and archos seems to have found a legitimate solution that works really well. it would also be a big plus to get rid of the regular nook bar at the botto or would this only be possible on a custom rom?
Try button Savior for soft keys..its great.
//from the nook COLOR
I'm using button savior and like the way it works except it doesn't work for me all the time. For example last nigth I was playing with the SNES Emulator and loaded a game, I brought up button savior to go back and it wouldn't work. The only button that would work was the home button.
you can use home switcher to set it to the n button so that way one click brings up the menu
I don't have a issue with the way the buttons are brought up just the fact that they don't work all the time when they do come up.
i understand about button savior and all that but i find the built in softkeys on archos tablets to be a much more enjoyable experience. ive used my friends achos 70 and they are very convenient and add up to being alot better then button savior. just wondering if this could be ported to the nc
wouldn't it be easier to make the current nook taskbar system persistent/have the back and menu buttons all the time?
I found a thread that did just this, look for nook color soft keys. The only problem is the never worked for me, if you can find a way to make these apps to work please post here, because I as would like the aoftkeys from the archos devices and even a notification bar on top? Just s you know
So for an upcoming April Fool's joke I want to get my N1 to look like iOS. Any suggestions as far as ROMs and themes go? Icon packs should be easy to find. I'm pretty sure I could toy around with LauncherPro to get the general look, but the key to a good April Fools is in the details. That includes the Notification bar and some of the built in apps (Dialer, email, etc.) if possible. Splash and bootanimations would help too.
MIUI would do the trick very well. Visually it's pretty much iOS copy.
MIUI rom looks like IOS, check it out in development area if nexus one.

MIUI always struck me as more of a TouchWiz clone than iOS, but I guess with some tweaks it would work... Probably a better start than CM at least. I guess it'd be too much to try to get the trackball to work like the app button on iOS and make the other buttons do nothing...
Scratch that last post. I didn't notice they've completely moved over the widgets and everything. MIUI should work nicely (assuming I can get the Notification bar done properly). For the button trick I'm thinking of just playing with the key bindings to get that to work and using QuickDesk for the double tap functionality. Anyone know what their app button does on a long press?
On iPhone4, if I'm not mistaken, it brings up the task manager.

I thought that was a double tap. QuickDesk has a "QuickPanel" that shows the recent apps. If I just have that with no icons on the rest of it, it'll look really similar. Close enough that even an iOS user might not notice the difference (which is the ultimate goal)
One thing I miss from my iPod is being able to tap the top bar and have it take me to the to of the page. Would that be doable?

Just changing it out isn't the prank, but it is a necessary part of the gag as a whole. At this point I've got the whole thing themed, slide to unlock looks right, the wallpaper doesn't scroll, double tapping the home button acts properly, and I've got a good plan of action for the face buttons. I'm down to two problems, the first being much more important: getting the Notification Bar to look like their Status Bar, and getting the icon jiggle when the launcher goes into edit mode(I'm using MIUI). I'm thinking I might have to change out the status bar layout xml in framework-res.apk. Does anyone know if there's a better way or if this will even work?
Anyone know how to implement the Universal Search feature of iOS? True the search widget more or less replicates the functionality, but I need it to look like and behave like Universal Search (needs to become full screen, and a second press on the home button needs to return to whatever home screen you were on). ideas?
ok, I am totally stuck. It looks like the notification bar is gonna be more than just a quick xml changeout in framework-res.apk. services.jar will have to be edited too. Does anyone have any experience at all with moving icons around on the status bar?
Hi
I have just installed avatar rom on my n7000
i have also nova launcher
I did for the first 24 not have any soft keys
but suddnely the soft keys appeared on my screen?
how can i get rid of them?
Go to settings, hybrid properties (paranoid preferences) then slide to the right and go to interface and in the navbar size, make it to 0% and you'll be rid of those soft keys. Hit thanks if this helps.

i can not find a way to get them back (not that i want to)

these are the soft keys i am talking about.
i guess i am happy now, since it solved itselfe.
but i dont know how i got them to appear or disappear.
Yes those keys are the one's that we get with paranoid android based ROMs usually, they have been ported to the avatar ROM i guess. To disable them if they appear in future, look out for a setting related to navigation bar in the settings. Btw how's the stability and battery life of the ROM?

Thanks (i will push, not just say).
I have only had the ROM for a day and that day i have been home... So cant speak about stability and battery life.
I have ordered a new battery aswell. So hopefully with the new battery, new rooted phone and new ROM i will have a great phone
I am really tho looking for ROMs for Galaxy Note that is slim and makes it really fast and smooth.
That is the main goal why i rooted the phone. I hate that it lags and takes time to open simple apps like the borwser. Wait for it to load to be able to type an URL...
So usually I can add qumu.hw.mainkeys=0 on the build prop, or download softkey enabler app and it usually adds soft keys after a reboot. But now if I do EITHER of those, it just says system ui crashed and I gotta press ok and then a second later it pops up again. and again.
I added soft keys on my S4, S5 and my M7 before and I never ran into this. Does anyone else have any solutions? I don't really like those pop up types, I like the stock android soft keys.
whats wrong with the soft keys that are already on the phone?

I installed it and can't even enable it. It says it cannot open it on the Note 4
That's not good news. I was planning on upgrading to the note 4 soon. Developer may have to update the module. Sorry it didn't work.

I tried on Dynamic Kat and Hyperdrive roms and still had the same problem =( I actually like using soft keys because I feel like the hard keys are harder to reach when using one hand.

Did you come up with a solution to enable softkeys? I'm in the same camp.
What about the built-in softkeys? Settings -> One-handed operation -> Side key panel?

I found GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys but I noticed a drop in my battery life ever since I started using it.
It can auto hide or keep it there forever but it does get in a way with some apps like when you try to text or type it's right on top of the space bar

Thanks for the suggestion. It is now showing Android 5.0 symbols after I unistalled the app. Weird. I'll show you a screenshot.
I could not figure out how to enable soft keys and after uninstaling app the Android 5.0 soft keys showed up. Really weird.

Is it working? and what launcher are you using?
I would love this too. I like having a little bit of bezel at the bottom that I can hold (without hitting buttons), but the Note's capacitive keys are just in the way. I don't mind the Home button and would leave that enabled (maybe bound to something else if possible). Another reason is that I'm left-handed and HATE the "back" button being on the right side instead of left (which I'm used to since all of my previous devices were set up like this -- Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), Moto X (2013), Nexus 7 (v2), and LG G2 w/modded keys).
Lastly, I really like adding additional navring options besides the built-in Google Now shortcut. There must be a way to get the default Android on screen keys with root and xposed, right? I hope someone figures it out!
