...will it be as simple as flashing the vanilla ROM straight onto it, and having an untouched stock ROM or will it need porting/custom ROMs?

So I finally decided to root my N1 after owning it for about 7 months now, I'm sick of using the stock theme, I want to black out my status bar and have a cool theme on it, so any suggestions?
Complete newb.
Should I flash a new rom? Any fast roms that look almost stock but with more of a galaxy vibrant look to it?
All newbies should start with Cyanogen. I did it and it was worth it. Try Cyanogen Mod v6.0.0. If you are feeling adventurous then try one of the MIUI based roms... its different.
Eh I wouldn't say that since cyanogen doesn't come with gApps. Start with something like leofroyo or something with a blackbar mod and move from there. Once you've flashed a few times and are confident in your abilities, move on to cyanogen and learn2play.
Why not start out with Geo's ROM ? Almost stock but has a black bar add on

Can anyone provide instructions on how to flash a new rom? Should I just download the rom file, rename it to update.zip and do it from recovery? How would I go about flashing Geo's ROM?
Do I also need to unlock bootloader?
You don't need to unlock the bootloader (I haven't), but you will need a custom recovery.
Read the wiki for 'how to':

Any recommendations on ROMs? How does the Evil Desire HD rom run? Smooth? Fast?
def. recommend enom's with the galaxy theme
Ready to ROM but first a few questions please.
I think I know what I am doing had a N1 before some @[email protected] walked off with it.
I am rooted, thanks to XDA
I am going to use Titanium backup to back up my Apps
Use ROM Manager to back up my current OEM Rom the flash new ROMs
Coming from N1 I ran nothing but Cyanogenmod and I loved them they were clean and very stable. Looking in the ROM section I do not see Cyanogenmods?
I want a ROM that is really clean, fast and completely unbranded. I mean when it powers up I want no AT&T logo or Rogers log for the matter.
My current Rogers ROM has little bloatware but I get the feeling some of the ROMs here may have AT&T junk.
Any recommendations on a ROM that I would be happy with? Stable, clean and completely unbranded?
Clean Roms
Well, the original boot will have the white AT&T screen for just a moment on all ROMs that I've seen.
Other than that, ALL custom ROMs get rid of AT&T bloatware and unlock potential of your phone. Most work well with most phones.
A few additional steps you want to take before going further... know your make number (1008, 1009, 1010, etc). You need to know you can flash back to stock using Odin in some form, shape and/or fashion in the event it all goes to hell.
You need to know if you can boot into download mode using the button combinations included in the threads. If not, you need to be sure to get the right ODIN package that will enable you to do so. If you don't, if you get hung, you're really hung.
As far as recommending a ROM, I personally prefer AdamHolden's ROM's. I think he does good work. He is currently working on the PHOENIX ROM.

DesignGears also does very stable ROMs (Cognition and Perception). My first ROM I ever flashed was his cognition ROM, and it clued me into the true potential of the phone and of custom ROMs.

Almost all the ROMS out there are really clean..
I would personally recommend phoenix, perception or darkyy's ROM for the best performance and look n feel..
Build number is 2.32.651.2. I've been eligible for an upgrade since 12/1, but want to know if I can root beforehand. And what would be the best ROM for it? Or, are there any new Sprint phones that will have Android 2.3 later on in the year?
Thanks.
you can root beforehand and if u do a different rom then u dont even need to use that update. if u are looking for a rom that is more stock based then try aosp or fresh but if u are looking for a more customizable rom use cynanogenmod. there is a gingerbread port out for the hero here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864403
New to android world and looking for first rom. On stock Froyo 2.2, rooted, clockwork installed. Which rom can be installed without Odin? Do kernels have to be installed separate, if so, is it before or after rom install? Looking for sense-like ui.
Thanks!!

If you want sense go buy a HTC lol. Odin is going to be your bread and butter since its the easiest way to flash to stock and flash kernels. Most roms can be installed without odin though. Go to the dev page and look around at the roms and make your choice. Remember Gingerbread needs new bootloaders (except Cyanogenmod and Miui) and as always read read read.

Hi guys! I am right now stuck at miui rom 5 and wonder what is a good custom rom instead? I don't know about the s-on s-off thingy right now but I believe I have the "bad" thing that is not good for custom.
What would be the easiest rom to jump over to? I am planning on selling the phone later so I guess something that looks more like stock and maybe have updates etc?
