So I just picked up a s4 from tmo and I'm running carbon ROM and it runs awesome.. However, I can't stand the giant home button in the center I miss the software keys on my nexus 4.. My question is how is the camera quality on aosp roms? From what I've read in the forums its a hit or miss. Also, how hard is it to boot into recovery?

Honest opinion.. Keep your S4.
If you can get an Xperia with an Unlockable boot loader then its fairly easy, otherwise it could be impossible. Custom Rom development is slower than some devices but I have full confidence that our devs will be able to release 100% functional roms in no time at all!
You may want to wait for someone with more knowledge on the US T-Mobile variant of the Xperia Z as to how easy it is to mod
Put it this way.. Given the option I probably would swap my Xperia Z for an S4

Were you running a nexus before the Xperia Z? The software button layout of the Xperia Z was one reasons I chose it over the S4/Htc One.

Camera isn't as good as on stock roms but still more than acceptable.
AOSP roms are pretty much bug free now that the wake delay has been fixed. Only remaining bug is HDMI out doesn't work.

He just hates the xperia z but still using it.
The display on the S4 is definitely better in my opinion.
I like the design of the Z though and the materials from which it's made but the biggest reason I like Sony over other Android phones is the UI (It's simple yet beautiful)
I find the battery on the Z more than acceptable, I'm not a heavy-user but I've never run out of charge before the end of the night (or even come close).
The biggest advantage of the S4 is the display (The processor doesn't make a difference to me... It may make a difference to you though!)
I don't know about the S4's camera but the XPERIA Z camera is rather good (lightyears better than the XPERIA S).
Just my 2 cents, no facts here.

Why not sell your phone if it sux so much? Lol.
To the op,
I had nexus 4, sold it and got the 32g sg3.
Bought the XZ and have not regretted my choice. Never powered the gs3 on again infact.
It's similar to using N4, even stock Sony launcher is nice.
Screen is better and the camera runs rings around the nexus.
Expandable memory and is quite easily rooted for mods.
Flashtool is easy to use.
Unlocked bootloader or not is no real big deal. Stock roms with root get you through the day.
Personal opinion of course.

How am I a troll if I own the phone. I'm entitle to my opinion and you are entitle to your ignorant comment.
If you are not on the move all day, I highly recommend Xperia Z. It offers superior build quality, user experience and better camera (in 4.2). Galaxy S4 is super hyped up with plenty of gimmicks you don't use. Overall, it's an excellent choice to make the move. I think the S4 gives a crappy feeling of plastic and there's no "WOW" factor. Xperia Z is water resistance which gives some form of insurance in case anything happens.

Yeah. Frustrating how all technology does that
Suck it up, sell it and move along.
Might be able to pick up a nice (cough cough) HTC One or SGS4 for a similar price.
I'd say the grass isn't always greener but Samsung's over-saturated screen will certainly take care of that!

snapdragon 600 claims a 40% increase in CPU performance, coming from S4 pro. Wireless charging is nothing great, you have to stupidly fix the phone on a particular position on the charging mat. And for your information, One has 1.7GHz
Sent from my DHD
The performance of the Nexus 4 is rather bad compared to other S4 Pro phones, as it suffers badly from thermal throttling - that is, the CPU heats up and the phone makes it run slower to stop it from getting any hotter. So the One should be a lot faster than the N4.
The gap between the One and one of the faster S4 Pro phones (like the Sony Xperia Z, which is very nippy) will be narrower, but it should still be faster for most things. (Possibly only barely faster for games, though).

Depends on the phone. I LOVED wireless charging on my Lumia 920. Position was no issue, and it always worked. it was fantastic.
The N4 sucked at it and I agree with your statement in regards to the N4.

m7 will have more usable screen size due to not using onscreen soft keys (thankfully). Far better build quality. I have a suspicion the m7 won't feel faster (if not slower) than the N4 but that is due to software. It is hard to beat the speed of AOSP regardless of what specs you throw at it. Now that said, with some custom roms (especially if the m7 sees AOSP) the m7 will most definitely be faster. However I would be quite surprised if Sense 5 doesn't feel at least some "lag" Vs. an N4 stock vs stock just due to AOSP vs Sense.
I wouldn't even consider the N4 personally. There isn't really anything I liked about it (I had 2). I went back to my Lumia 920 over the N4. If it wasn't for the Note 2 I probably would have gone back to the GS3 waiting for the GS4/m7/etc.. coming soon. I could list all the things I didn't like about the N4 but that is not really what this is about and there is plenty of that information around .
Having owned all of these phones I fully intend to try the m7 next, regardless of what Samsung announces for the GS4. I like Samsung's products but I look forward to a phone that will look and feel a bit more elegant, something I would be very (happily) surprised if GS4 accomplishes.
As far as wireless charging goes, I seem to be one of the minority that care. I would have loved to see it, though it is definitely not a deal breaker and implementation is key. The N4 wireless charging was a horrible experience, but the Lumia 920 was awesome at it. I could toss it on the pad in any direction partially off the pad and it would still charge fine. I do miss that, but it is not at the top of my list. It's nice not having to deal with the micro usb plug at 1am and your trying to go to bed in the dark .
There is one reason why I'll probably be sticking to the N4 and that's HTC's policy of locking down phones. When I drop £500 on a phone I expect to be able to use it however I want to. They can take my warranty away if they want to but at least give me the choice.

I've always owned a galaxy phone; Vibrant, S2, S3.... My wife has the s4. I'm really getting bored of the galaxy line and don't care for the s4 compared to the s3. I've really been interested in the XZ since it first debuted. Is it worth it? Any advice.
Ps- Don't care for Verizon, they don't have a wide variety of good phone options (IMO).

only downside is bootloader is unlockable and it seems there is no dev around that is willing to put in the work to unlock it. so that means no custom kernels no cm,aokp,or p.a. but if that isnt a deal breaker for you its a GREAT piece of hardware with a great ui:good:

Not really faster ... it took how much 4 months for you to get 4.2.2 and its still buggy , for one took 2 months and it's still the most optimised device ever existed , one word lag free .. as for ui isnt the sense acclaimed best looking skin.... anyway won't go into debate with you it's more of a personal preference.

If you have the money and can wait a month or 2 than do that as Xperia Honami is coming that is most likely going to be unveiled in the beginning of September. It is however gonna be significantly more expensive when it comes out as most top phones are. Otherwise I can tell you that it is a great phone and waterproofing has already helped me save my phone once, any other would need a replacement. Check out my video, maybe it will help you decide as well
Depends upon how you use it
Sony xz - if you need a classy lukin phone
Htc one - if you use your phone for texting cos as far as I used, I feel the screen is too big to handle .and loudspeaker of xz is a way lower than htc one. Super lcd is better than tft.

My previous phone was the Samsung Galaxy S3 and to me, that phone had one good thing - battery life. Otherwise, it was overhyped and not worth the money that I rather could lay on one of the other 2012 high / middle end phones back in november last year. However..
The Sony Xperia Z C6603 is one hell of an well built beast and the dev-support is pretty outstanding.. CM, PA, AOSP / AOKP and a lot of good stock based custom ROMS. Hey, we even got Doomlord that is bringing extended functionalities to the Z with his Doomkernel, that is worth the money all alone

Im sure it is, however, based on beer goggles the day of my reply and the fact that N5 is a fairly physically challenged device, I do apologize for not 'metaphorically' extinguishing any flames that may have otherwise saved a perfectly good yet otherwise beautiful device and I might add, that only a mother could love.

Battery life is best by far I have ever had, and the measly N5 battery tilted my decision between N5 and Z1 towards the latter. I haven't been disappointed. Phone is rock solid, lasts through an entire day from morning to midnight with heavy usage, camera is actually pretty good, and despite the viewing angles (which don't bother me) the screen is also excellent.

Totally agree with you, I've had exactly the same feeling/iter....
I had the pick of the litter and lived with each of the big hitters for a few days each and at first the Z1 was my least favourite with me leaning more towards the G2, but the solid build, brilliant camera and pace of the handset just won me over, I've got no regrets on my purchase.
On a side note, development is the only thing that has put me off since, but as soon as that bootloader is sorted, it'll be cool and rom's will be flying in.
You could possibly hold fire until it's done, cos if they don't ever fix the bootloader / camera issue then it'll be a travesty and i will be killing some Sony employees.

You could possibly hold fire until it's done, cos if they don't ever fix the bootloader / camera issue then it'll be a travesty and i will be killing some Sony employees.

I was thinking on G2 too but the lack of memory card tilted me toward z1.......memory card lack was the reason to not bought htc one too...... I hate phone without sdcard.....
I am happy to have Z1 but the the only concerned section for me is the assistance from Sony on Android Updates. How long we will stick with 4.2.2? I saw Kitkat and is pretty light and fast.

As far as 4.2.2 works well I'm fine with the fact that we're stuck here (for now). I think that Android version doesn't matter as long as the phone works well. I bought my Z1 a week ago and before that I was on X10 with gingerbread and I didn't had any problems with that. I tried custom ROMs with 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 on it but it had some bugs (like camcorder not working) and the most important thing is that everything works fine.
About being light, I believe that Kit Kat is. But faster!? I'm using my Z1 for a week now and I installed tons of apps, I'm playing heavy games and listening to music in the same time, then switching between games, browser and poweramp and the Z1 didn't lagged not even once! This phone is a beast and I think that it can't get faster than this.
I would really like to get Kit Kat but the 4.2.2 works perfectly so far and while it's so, there's no rush for an update. Being faster (which is almost impossible) is not enough for an update. I'm hoping to get even better battery life and better camera in Kit Kat (4K video recording maybe!?) and some other improvements. Otherwise, the update wouldn't make any sense.

This is what I mean. It can be done but the Updates from Sony are close to nothing. Nexus 5 do not have this problems and the OS is always improved. I prefer Z1 anyway but I will be happy to have some updates soon as is possible, otherwise I have to flash some Rom.

This is the only advantage of Nexus, it has to have something otherwise people won't buy it All other is better on Z1: camera, screen, design, waterproofness, memory etc.
This is hands down the phone I've been waiting for! Perfect screen size with a great processor and stock android. This phone is fantastic. I've had soooo many phones in the past year it's insane. Galaxy note 2 and 3 galaxy s4 htc one Sony xperia z ultra HTC one again galaxy note 3 again and none have made me happy. Alot has to do with ask the bloat that those phones have. I don't know how to root devices and play with the software. All I've wanted was a nice die phone that's snappy and smooth with a nice size screen and stock android. I now have it and couldn't be happier. I'm a little scared as to how the battery life will be as I'm a heavy internet user but time will tell. Gonna order a wireless charger and case now.

If you're looking for a budget wireless charger that gets the job done and is a trusted name then purchase the Nokia DT-900 (it's about $25 from at&t) and if you're looking for one that tilts then get the DT-910.
I have the DT-910 and it's wonderful. Stay away from off brand chargers because it can damage you're phone or even cause a fire!
Welcome to this wonderful community and enjoy your Nexus 5!

I'd be really annoyed if I was waiting for a nexus 5 and something else arrived

If you plan on rooting the device read the first 4 threads well in the General section before you do anything

Sorry for not recognizing the sheer magitude of your wisdom, the N5 though will be flagged when unlocking/rooting which the N4 didn`t have, you can reset it though but i`am sure you allready know that
Your just to funny. Have you nothing better to do. I don't want to get thrown off the forum so I'll keep some of my choice words to myself.

Congrats! And Enjoy!
Activate ART for absolut Performance
To OP: Congrats on getting a great phone. I really would suggest unlocking and rooting to get the most out of the phone tho. Xposed + GravityBox really make the phone even better. With those you don't even need to go the custom ROM route.
To the people being DICKS in this thread: Really? Get a life.
Coming from a s3 and now got the nexus 5 I can't be happier no more lag or waiting a minate for my contacts to open and now its instant
Coming from S3 att with AOKP. I love everything except lose buttons and smaller grill mic and speaker. reading reading reading now before unlock/install/root.
I am not familiar with Xposed. should I go with roms or Xposed. I want my phone to be fast and just work.

I actually wanted to thank you for this though. I didn't know about the flagging issue until you mentioned about it. :highfive:
No worries, no harm done! Its always a good time for beer(or whiskey) !
Welcome to the club! I've owned a ton of handsets in the past few years and this is the only one I haven't rooted in the first week because it just works so beautifully as is. Haven't had one issue (other then loose power button, can't win em all). I get the itch to root and fiddle now and then but then I can't bring myself to do it as its just perfect for me as is. I'm sure eventually the modder in me will win out and I'll tinker with it to all hell and back, but for now, just enjoying the ride.

I'd definitely play around with Xposed before flashing a ROM. At least for me it has completely eliminated the need to flash any custom ROMs. I am stock rooted + Xposed on all 3 of my Android devices and I wouldn't have it any other way. GravityBox is the first module you should try, as it has a TON of features. You get the benefits of staying stock (stability, bug free) but get to add whatever features you want to your stock ROM. I can't stress how awesome Xposed is, and it really was a game changer for me.

I'm in the market for a new phone and the only thing keeping me on the fence with the Z1s is the lack of root and despite the bounty on it, progress looks to be slowing. Can anyone make an argument for this phone on stock over an equivalently spec'd phone that can be rooted?

Do you care about it being waterproof? Do you care about a horrible screen? (Yes, the screen is terrible). Sony's software is good enough to use without any rooting, but what other phones were you looking at?
Well, I'm moving up from a Galaxy Nexus who's screen has horrible burnin so I guess calling the Z1s screen terrible is a relative statement. I'm mainly looking to buy through tmobile. Their phone offering is kind of weak, atleast until they stock the S5 but I'm sort of weary of AMOLED screens after the galaxy nexus. The only other phone I was seriously considering was the 2013 HTC One which i know has root but obviously its a bit dated by comparison. Could you recommend any other competitor? Maybe even through AT&T?
Come on buddy. Let's positive thinking here. It's not able yet, beside think about quad core, 2 GB ram, 16 GB internal memory, plus 20 mp camera. You'll be proud of it.

To each his own, but personally i wouldn't ever be interested in a phone where i can't unlock the bootloader. So a phone without root and without bootloader unlocking? No way for me. I love my Z1 though, but have the unlocked international version

If you really don't care about the screen, it's a good phone. I forgot to mention that the tmobile version of this phone is HUGE. It's bigger than the Z1. What about the Nexus 5? The HTC one 2013 is still a really great phone. They ported Sense 6 to it now with everything working.
The camera on this phone is about equal to the HTC one's camera. More MP though.

The phone has a huge list of Pros and while no root is the only con I can give it, it's a pretty big one. I have a broken galaxy nexus and disposable income burning a hol through my pocket. I'm going to have a new phone by the end of the day. I'm just trying to weigh which hurts less either a bit of an outdated phone with root or the Z1s without root.

Root will eventually come in August when jcase said he would release it. Another question is do you care about slow updates? The Z1 just got KK, but the tmobile version will likely have to wait a few more months. HTC seems to be doing well updating their phones. I would get the HTC One if I were you. Maybe even the new HTC one that's being release tomorrow.

The slow updates was a bit of a bummer but I could live with it. I asked whether Tmobile would offer the HTC one tomorrow but the rep sounded doubtful. I could simply go with the HTC One and then jump to the 2014 model after a few months when tmobile has them stocked. The other reason I'm considering the HTC one is for it's build quality. I'd be taking a bit of a hit on horsepower though but still an absolute upgrade from the galaxy nexus.
You may have convinced me to take the HTC one actually lol.

Yeah no one knows about that. There are some rumors that Verizon will have it for 2 weeks before everyone else, but some rumors say all carriers get it tomorrow. The 2013 one is still pretty fast though.
@aooga
The htc one camera is definitively one of the worst camera ever seen in the last years
Check gsmarena comparisons if you don't trust me
And this only would made me skip this phone
Anyway, I would skip the S5 due to its crappy ui
And the z1s for his closeness
Couldn't you buy an unlocked phone maybe? I know US mentality is quite different.. but cmon is there really this saving?

Hmm. I didn't see that when I had it. The camera was really good both in low light and outside. The Z1 camera takes a lot of fiddling to get shots, but when you get it right, they're pretty good.
Oooohhh, the camera..... yea that just bummed me out of the HTC One. Ugh. I guess it's back to square one. I gave the nexus 5 a thought and the only real reason I dismissed it was because my brother has it.

Just to be clear: you can root your device with locked bootloader. You just can't install custom roms. It's just a bit of work to get a rooted Kitkat.
I love the device. Sonys firmware is really good I didn't have any reason to use custom roms yet. It's closer to pure Android than the other 3 brands.
The camera is good (with a bit practice). I've bought the device mainly because of the huge battery

The problem is exactly there. When I open photos load they are good. Then I say: "oh, let's take a look at those people up there" or "let's check that bird on the seaside "
And I zoom in.. and you realize photos suck (a ****ty galaxy ace can even beat the one! holy jesus..)
anyway, I wouldn't boycott the ****ing close contract system if I were you... but if you aren't so prudish, well, z1s would be a good deal
Otherwise, go unlocked nexus 5/xperia z/xperia z1

If you live in the US, buying phones from the carrier is actual beneficial. Tmobile has something called JUMP that lets you get a phone every 6 months if you buy the phone from them. And you pay nothing up front.
