Hi all!
I'm going to flash CWM recovery on Samsung galaxy mini (stock 2.3.4) and I'd like to ask a couple of questions.
I'm going to follow this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529863
Is it okay?
1. Do I have to root the device before flashing CWM with odin? Phone isn't rooted now, it's completely stock.
2. Can I install ANY custom rom with CWM? eg. CM9 or 10?
3. I want to make sure that if i want to install a custom rom, first I flash CWM with odin, then custom rom with CWM. Do i have to do something else?
I'm asking these questions because I don't want to brick my phone on my first time flashing something.. I want to be sure.

Okay, thanks very much for your help!
if you want to be on stock then root first before flashing CWM as after flashing CWM you may not be able to root your phone.
If you want to flash custom rom then there's no need to root your phone.
Just boot into cwm wipe data
flash rom
again wipe data and then reboot
remember that wiping data is needed before and after the flashing process.
Ok, I'm going to flash CWM tomorrow
Thanks for help!
E: Succesfully installed CWM on my SGM!!
Enjoy and play more with your rom

Hey! I just got my Nook HD+ tablet today and I want to root it and enable unknown sources, I have been following leapinlar's thread for sometime and really appreciate his work! I am not really ready to flash to CM because of certain app stability issues i have heard (correct me if I am wrong) Thus, I thought stock is more stable and I can just use nova launcher with it. I don't really want to spend time trying to root it and I have seen he has a stock 2.1.1 file with root, unknown source, busybox, etc right? Will the bootloader be unlocked if I flash it? and how do I flash it? I have already downloaded the file and have a 32gb class 10 transcend card ready. Do I have to install CWM or can I use stock recovery to flash it? and do you have the instructions to flash CWM and replace stock recovery? Thanks!
To flash anything you need to make a bootable CWM SD per my instructions in my HD/HD+ CWM thread. You cannot flash things with stock recovery. Once you have made the CWM SD it is just as easy to flash the Universal Root rev3 zip and enable unknown sources zip as it is to flash the stock 2.1.1 rooted zip. Even with the full rooted version you still need to flash the enable unknown sources zip. And you end up exactly the same no matter which way you go.
All of the zips get flashed the same way with CWM, including the full stock zips and custom recovery for internal memory.

So that's the question, I can do everything else with Rom manager probably, but I need to root my phone.
I saw a popular thread on rooting with Odin/Flashing recovery through Odin.
But the download links are dead.
if you want to root your phone, use kingoroot pc version or mobile version
if you want to install a custom recovery download rom manager from play store to install CWM recovery
hope i helped you
Will be getting my tab S2 710 in 2 days and would like to root it ofc from the start, but like everyone is saying first make a backup!. Is there a tool or a program that will make an backup of not rooted device? And if anything goes wrong while rooting I would be able to restore that backup? Thx for the help!
not that I know of. I rooted and made backup with TWRP before changing kernels or any other modifications and had no problem. Good luck.
Backup with TWRP BEFORE making any changes or rooting.
but TWRP is a custom recovery right? So first I need to flash your TWRP port then make a backup and then flash kernel and root via Odin?
You don't need to flash a kernel just backup with twrp then flash supersu 2.65 with twrp.
But if my device will be with 5.1.1 I will have to use your custom kernel for root to work, right? So if I understand you correctly I need to do all these things to get backup + root:
1. Flash TWRP with Odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-7-x-lollipop-5-1-1-t3205686
2. Backup with TWRP
3. DL latest stable SuperSu form here: https://download.chainfire.eu/921/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.65-20151226141550.zip
4. Flash it
Thats all?
Correct
Got my 710 and it's 5.0.2 will this root method still work? btw its from Poland region T710XXU2AOJ4. SO I need to flash only the twrp_2.8.7.1_LL_5.0.2_t710 ? BTW is there any noticeable difference with 5.1.1 ? Can I upgrade to this - http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/54572/T710XXU1BOH7_T710BNN1BOH7_BNN/ as I understand I would have to flash it with Odin. Thx for your help a lot!
This is a sum up of most resources I found online for Tab S2 9.7 LTE(T815/T815c) for those of you who don't want to find anymore
including ROM, ROOT, RECOVERY, XPOSED FRAMEWORK and KERNEL
ROM:
Original stock ROM, UNROOT and UNMODIFIED.
choose from here and download
Chinese special version ROM(T815c)
Download from Dropbox
Download from BaiduYun (for Chinese users) with password: tdfv
Flash with Odin
Open Odin, click AP and select the file above, then flash.
Also a website for sum up of modified ROMs, here
RECOVERY:
TWRP 3.0.0, download from here, flash with Odin with the same steps above.
ROOT:
Flash CF auto root with custom recoveries(like TWRP above), download from here
XPOSED FRAMEWORK:
Flash from here with custom recoveries, then install Xposed app to control the modules.
KERNEL:
Flash with Odin
PERMISSIVE KERNEL for normal T815 devices, here.
PERMISSIVE KERNEL for Chinese T815c devices, here.

Hi OP!
Thanks for this article, it really is helpful, but I have 2 questions about it:
if I want to use the linked "ROM: Original stock ROM, UNROOT and UNMODIFIED." on my rooted, TWRP recovery 815 device , I will have to unroot my device also have to install stock recovery beforehand, am I right? Because if I try to install it via Odin it will brick my Tab S2.
I am asking it, because it was more than half a year since I updated my Tab S2, because it has stock ROM on it, with TWRP and root and I didn't wanted to deal with everything before update (unroot, stock recovery, ROM install via odin, twrp install again, root again etc.), since there is not stock update that I could istall via TWRP unfortunately.
My other question is what is Chinese special version ROM(T815c)? Why is it special? I am European so I don't speak Chinese either, not to mention my device is the basic 815, not 815c.
Thanks.

Hi, if you want to update your system to the latest version, I'm afraid in most of the cases you'll need to unroot at least unless your supersu has a recover OTA option in it, otherwise if you want to flash ROMs that I listed or other ROMs need to be flashed with Odin, you'll need to clear all the data in your device and flash, of course you can directly flash it without any wipe, but possibly something will go wrong. In your case if you only want to upgrade your system, you can find other ROMs here in xda and flash it with recovery, but even if you use recovery, there's no guarantee that nothing will go wrong without wiping anything. My suggestion is to backup your data first, and maybe find a recovery update package and directly flash it with recovery, no need to unroot or wipe other than Cache, but in case anything went wrong, you can use ROMs provided here and flash them with Odin to recovery your device, of course, if something went wrong, you'll have to wipe everything to do that.
About the Chinese version, if you don't use the T815c version, thedn you don't need to care about that, it's for Chinese buyers who bought the Chinese version.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Actually what you should do is to wipe all the data in the phone and then flash the ROM, no need to unroot or flash recovery separately, wipe can do all that for you, of course if you don't want to wipe all the data, you can try and directly flash the ROM(it's risky but sometimes it also works perfectly), then if something went wrong, you can wipe the data and flash again to recover.

I did not know it should be that simple, I owned a HTC, LG and Huawei phones but in all of them I have to unroot and install the stock recovery.
Oh, ok. I should do a full Wipe with Odin? I know there's an opinion in TWRP too.
