I am confused. I have two apps (Delta Airlines and FlightAware) that push messages to the phone. Messages are received even if I have not started the app. What confuses me is I do not see these apps under running apps, running services, or battery stats (because I have not started them), but I still receive the pushed messages. How can these messages be received with no apparent resources being used?
Still curious how apps not running can push messages. I never open the Delta app, never see it running under resources, but still receive pushed messages that I did not even request. Obviously, some part of the app is running. How is it hiding?
Did you check cached processes?

Thanks. Never knew about cached processes. I did check and did not see either app. Next time a receive a pushed message I will check.

It sure finds some way to push it... Maybe do not need to be on and in process.
They can be launched by broadcast messages, maybe sent by Google Cloud Messaging system or maybe they are background services running and started with the startup broadcast message

Hi
I have never used the default HTC messenger program for sending and receiving txt messages. Now that I have root I was thinking about removing it; if I remove it will that cause any problems in my ability to send and receive txt messages?

So removing the stock message app is prob not a good idea then?
Yeah, don't remove it unless you don't want any texts! All the market apps piggyback the htc app's connection / protocol and just disable the notifications for the original app.
You can remove the others you listed with no problems though
I just want to make sure, if I remove peep, I can still receive twitter updates if I download a third party client from the marketplace?

Yes, you can.
I was curious of the same question as you. It sucks for me though because I use Handcent for my sms/mms needs but even with the notifications disabled in the stock messaging app it still pops up in both
I had handcent, default messages, and google voice on my phone back when I was running stock 1.5 and I only recieved notifications from handcent. I am not sure which rom you are running or which settings in messages you have checked or unchecked. Let me know.
What's the best app for stopping the 9016 sms?

you can use Redlist to block them if you add them to redlist and blacklist.

try calling sprint or whoever your carrier is and they should be able to stop it.

Pretty much every sms app allows blacklisting but the stock one, try chomp, go, handcent.

I got it, you have to disable 'Notifications' in the stock messaging app.

Well, now I don't get notified of my text messages duh
Have handcent and red list but they keep appearing in the notification bar

I haven't used vvm for a while, but I used redlist and it worked. It just sucked because the notification icon is black so it's hard to see against a dark status bar.
You have to turn off all sms app notifications and turn on notifications in redlist.

You can also text "block 9016", without qutoes to 9999.

Do not block 9016 through Sprint, as you will stop receiving voicemails.
Handcent's blacklist didn't work for me to block 9016, but Go SMS Pro worked.
*some* newer ROMs give the stock messaging app the option to block 9016, like this one. Blocking it from within the stock messaging app, even if it's not the one you use for day to day use, should block it for any and all SMS applications.
jaybob got the code to block 9016 from kushdeck and evervolv, so I'm hopeful there's a way to simply patch the messaging app without requiring a new ROM. At the same time, we're getting swarmed with a lot of quality ROMs these days so people shouldn't' be afraid to try one (or more) out. Life is good for Hero owners. We are spoiled thanks to some great developers.

i finally got SVVM to work on my hero running cm7 (7.0.3), just lastnight, & i use "super private conversation" to block the 9016 text messages, i tried redlist, but still got a notification.
edit: not really sure how i got VVM working, it took several hrs, trying several different ways.
i went back to my stock 2.1 rooted rom, updated the VVM, & used TI backup to backup the VVM, & kinda followed the directions on the aospcmod repo page, method 2, & even used the TI VVM backup off that page, along with the stuff on cyanogens forum, & from www.thetechtemple.com

Thanks. I put Redlist on and didnt seem to do squat. But I didnt change these settings.
I had this same issue with both my hero and evo. I found a fix for it on another site:
"To fix this, go into Handcent, press menu, settings, application settings, default messaging applications and then check "disable". Then go to your VVM application, hit menu, compose and enter your own number as the send to, hit record for 4 or 5 seconds, then hit send. The VVM app will then download any messages you had waiting."

Hello everyone.
I've updated to 5.0.1 and I've been having issues with updates basically I'm not getting notifications for my Emails or WhatsApp or any other app for that matter, i have to manually go into my apps to get my notifications. For example, once I go to my WhatsApp i get my messages all at the same time (iOS style) and also my emails, I have to go into my mail box to refresh to get my emails. Is this an issue or i'm missing something in the settings?
I searched before starting this thread couldn't find anything.

Sounds like you need to do a factory reset. Always good with an update anyway.

tell me, are you using greenify? i had the same issue for a day, until i found whats causing it. i never greenify my apps with notifications first off. greenify has a setting to keep notifications, when i enabled it i stopped getting any notifications. as soon as i disabled it and rebooted, i got notifications again.
I just did a factory reset and it seems that it has solved the issues so far so good.

I use 8sms as my default text app. In the Google Messenger app I see a text of 829 bytes from an unknown sender yesterday which I have not downloaded. This text is not seen in my 8sms messaging app, nor is it seen in the mysms app. Is there any way to check this message outside of my phone? I don't want to open it given the circumstances, but I don't want to miss a legit text.

Then you have a tough decision to make, I wouldn't go near that text

Since this is the Nexus 6 forum, I'm guessing that you have an N6 and it has received the OTA update that (almost completely) patched this vulnerability. That's one reason not to worry. Another is that there is no record of a working exploit of stagefright that does more than crash the OS (no damage when re-booted). Yet another reason not to worry is that 829 bytes seems very small for a multi-media file. So I'm guessing that there isn't any attachment -- let alone a malicious attachment.
I wonder how your Messenger app got a text if 8sms is set as the default.

CVE-2015-3864 - N6 still vulnerable.
Use the Stage fright detector app and check your device.

Running patched LYZ28J from T-Mo and detector says CVE-2015-3864 still vulnerable. Even though I have 8sms as default I still see all texts in Messenger. I installed Mysms to see if I could get it on my PC but couldn't. My texts are there in Mysms too. Is that unusual? I think I'll just ignore the text in question.

Unless you're running an ASOP rom updated within the last week with the missing patch commit it will show vulnerable. Patch hasn't even been pushed to ASOP by Google and won't be out on stock factory image till next security update. Are you gonna be bit by Stagefright. Probably not. Have a better chance of winning the Mega ball lottery. Is that text spam. Good chance.
I really think my X527 (now running 21s and showing as X526) is a well made phone for the money but the lack of notifications is getting old now.
I've followed various guides but still fail to get notifications for emails in particular.
Yahoo mail never gets notifications at all.
Whatsapp seems to be the most reliable, followed by Facebook Messenger.
Between the extremes of WhatsApp and Yahoo Mail it's hit or miss.
Any recommendations?
Nobody cares about notifications or have simply acclimatised to not needing them then?

Try to whitelist the app from being cleared from memory. I made a post to that effect here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78137018&postcount=1027
Also, find the setting to allow apps to automatically start at boot and add the app to autostart list.
I'll try
I followed many guides but none worked
do you get notifications after a long period of inactivity?
Go to the phone manager app and exclude the required apps from battery optimisation
no changes
Go to permission, app auto launch and include the required apps
