Hey guys, maybe somebody can help me.
I'm looking for a cheaper 7 inch tablet and am stuck between nook hd or galaxy tab 2 7.0 since I can get both for around same price.
If there's anybody here that has both and would like to share their thoughts that would be great!!
I will most likely root and install custom roms on whichever one i decide to get if that helps.
Thanks
currently i dont have either tablet, but for me personally between the nook hd and galaxy tab 2 7.0, i personally like the nook hd, just because of the higher screen resolution.
how much can you get the galaxy tab 2 7.0 for? The cheapest ive seen is around $160.
i was thinking about getting a 7" tablet as well, between the nexus 7, and nook hd.
hey i agree the nook hd screen is very nice!!
I was referring to prices of galaxy tab 2 on Ebay that can be found sometimes that can match the 130$ that the nook hd is now priced at.
I have both. But my GT2 is a Verizon version that runs mobile data under a subscription. And that mobile data is the only reason I prefer the GT2 over my HD. If it were a wifi only device, the HD would win hands down. It has a better screen and now that CM10.1is available for it on emmc, it is a great device.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
I've never really 'got' why the GT 2 7.0 is a popular device - it's one of the few known-brand 7" tablets that seems to be widely available at retail here in the UK. At the original price of £170+, I just couldn't understand it vs. the Nexus 7. I have a Nexus 7 which I like very much (although it doesn't get much use outside of gaming since I got the NHD+). If I were buying a 7-incher right now, however, it would be a tough call between the N7 (better CPU, industrial design I prefer, no video output, standard Micro USB, no SD) and the Nook HD (much better screen, video output, MicroSD slot, annoying proprietary connector).
The CPU performance difference between the N7 and my dad's NHD running CM10.1 is quite small, to be honest, I run my N7 with two cores disabled much of the time and don't notice any difference outside of artificial benchmarks. The SGX544 + extra memory bandwidth give it better graphics performance than the Tegra 3's GPU - but this is offset by the higher resolution screen, so from that point of view they feel pretty much identical too.
But whichever way you look at this comparison, I can't see that the GT2 7 with it's crappy 1024x600 screen even and easily scratched, tacky feeling, glossy polycarbonate body even comes into the equation unless it's available MUCH cheaper than the other two. Well, unless you absolutely need a somewhat poor rear-facing camera.
I own both and every since they added the Google Play Store to the Nook HD my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has been gathering dust. Previously I liked both for different reasons, but with the addition of the Play Store, the Nook HD has jumped ahead in my view. The Nook is also more comfortable to hold. It's not that the Galaxy Tab is uncomfortable it's just that the Nook feels better in the hand with it's rubberized back and bezel. The Galaxy Tab, on the other hand, is a little more slippery with its back and bezel being made of plastic.

I use the nook HD and I have to say it is outstanding. Good battery life and a great screen and as others have mentioned with the addition of the GPlay store it is fantastic.
16gig nook hd+ is like 167 with tax.. or the 32 gig nook hd for 167 with tax too..
I have both and had a nexus 7 untill it went flying off the roof of my car....
nook hd with cm10.1 beats it hands down, the screen res alone is worth it. text is clear and crisp. the build seems better than my nexus 7 (screen don't float....and the speakers are better than both the nexus and Samsung.. unless you need the camera or gps get the nook and flash it....

The title pretty much says it all. With new tablets coming out at the 7" size, with honeycomb already installed, and they are coming down in price, I might be tempted to go to one of those. The main things that I don't have on my nook that I wish I did was a camera (not so much for taking pictures, but for scanning QR codes and barcodes), and a microphone/headphone jack (I don't use a microphone but I do run a small business and I need to accept credit cards and the portable credit card readers must have a microphone/headphone port in order to work). Some of the new tablets coming out have what I want, and the price just might be tempting enough.
I just wanted to see if anybody got their hands on one (since walmart is apparently stocking them at some stores??) and if they can compare it to their nook color.
It's not out yet.
7" Honeycomb won't be supported til Honeycomb 3.2

Amazon is rumored that their new tablets will be released Aug - sept this year - so I expect that 7" tablets will be coming to market around that time frane.
Apparently you haven't seen the postings on engadget and everywhere that show the a100 popping up at random walmarts around the country. It has shown up and it does have honeycomb.

I know that there are others coming. I just wondered about this one since it was the first to come out.

And the article you mention says this: "Update: What you see in the wild is a display tag -- not the elusive A100, of course. You can't pop into a Walmart to buy one yet, but if that sticker is any indication, that'll change soon."
The tags are there, but no one yet has picked one up.
In the posts at the bottom there are people that say that their walmart has both the a500 and a100 in stock.
5 Hours of battery life...
I think I'll stick with the Nook for now. If I'm going to give up battery time for something, it better be able to push pixels like a Kal-El device.
I just purchased the acer Iconia Tab a100 8gig wifi model last night at my local walmart for $328 (+tax) with a free $50 walmart gift card. I have previously owned the nook color and dell streak and I use my wife's ipad and I have an iPhone 4.
I am honestly thinking of going back to the nook color or waiting for something a little lighter, thinner and less "slippery". The back and sides of the a100 are a slick plastic that makes holding the tab a bit of work.
I have been waiting for the 7 inch honeycomb as my wife's ipad is just too big and heavy and my iPhone too small for the daily reading that I do online and through apps. I thought the 7 inch would be the "just right" size.
It still may be, but I don't think this is my device. Also, not having Netflix is a huge bummer.
I look forward to reading others' impressions as I play with it for the next week.
My local walmart didn't have them in as of saturday. I plan on stopping at another walmart today in hopes of finding one. If I get one, I'll post a write-up comparing it to my nc.

Nook color has a headphone Jack. Not sure if you knew this and maybe its in the wrong place or something but just pointing out its there and works great and so do Bluetooth headsets as well I believe

For what he is needing, he needs a headphone jack with the additional mic input (our nook only has the headphones), since the CC reader uses the mic to send data to the card program.
Been waiting for it to show up at my local Walmart along with the Vizio tablet. The Android Tablet landscape is starting to get exciting!
I'd be interested to know what the tangible differences are between Nook Color and any tegra II tablet.
The only tablet I've owned is my NC and love it, but want to know if I were to upgrade to any Tegra II tablet ( or later Kal-El ) what noticeable differences would I have with an upgrade.
* Is websurfing / pageload superfast in comparison.
* Is HC multitasking easier to navigate
* Other things I haven't considered.
The only hang ups I have on my Nook ( rooted / OC CM7 ) - and they're minor - is that webpage downloads on WIFI is slower than I'd like and always will want more battery life. Rendering can have a slight lag when resizing .pdf documents. My gaming is very light - so not missing much there.
I was up for the A100 but with no IPS screen quality and with just 5hour+ battery life it is a no go. I want battery life 8hr and up. Plus it is not as thin as the nook. I am loving my Nook!!!
Yeah
The thin form of the Nook Color is definitely a plus. It's one reason I'm not in a rush to upgrade. I am hoping the next generation tablet will have a nice mix of battery life, and power, with a slim form.
Just saw that Sony had a new Screen with ultra low power draw " MAGIC WHITE LCD Panel ". Maybe that'll be the thing that extends the battery life for next generation.

I have a Galaxy tab 10.1 (with latest update) and the Nook color (running cm7 150 nightly 1200Mhz). The Gtab loads pages faster, maybe not superfast. But the thing that stands out is that scrolling webpages there is as smooth as a desktop browser.
The stock HC browser has something called "quick control" where the browser takes the whole screen, and you access controls (a semi circle control wheel) by swiping the thumb slightly on either side of the tablet. It's awesome, and much better than anything on the cm7 stock browser or dolphin browser.
Honeycomb's multitasking isn't that much better than what you can do now with long press of the home button on cm7.
And just a rough estimate on battery life, based on experience only, is that the Gtab 10.1 would last about 40% longer on a charge than a the NC.

I had really wanted to buy a Dell Streak to replace my Captivate a while ago, before buying a NC. How does the Streak compare to the Nook Color?
I went and looked at the a100 the other day. At first, i thought the features were absolutely great for the price. Then I began to learn why. The body quality is not near the Nook Color, the body is made of glossy-ish plastic, the screen is not IPS, and battery life is half what my Nook gets.
I just picked up the A100 today and posted a quick video comparing it to the nook color. I'll try and do some pageload comparisons with both stock and dolphin browsers either tonight or tomorrow. So far, the A100 beats NC is sound quality and OS, but is much more slippery than the NC. I'll post some more thoughts as I play with it more. Can't post links yet, but here you can see the video at:

Like many others on this forum, I am deeply enamoured to the 8.9 form factor. For me it's the sweet spot between having enough screen space for lounging at home without being too bulky or heavy to throw into my messenger with other stuff and carry around. When LG first announced their first tablet would be 8.9 based on customer research, I knew I'd be drawn to it, having found the original iPad too bulky. But by the time it came state sides as t mobile spring board it was out of spec and unwieldy. So when Samsung announced the galaxy tab 8.9 with current specs and lighter and thinner than ipad2 dimensions, I knew I was going to get it. After playing around with the 10.1 while waiting for the 8.9, then getting the 8.9 soon after it's release, there was no turning back!
Now, I plan to stick with this 8.9 for at least through the year, but admittedly in a world where quad cores and 1080nd screens are coming out, I've been keenly waiting to see if a current successor to the 8.9 would be announced, either by Sammy or another vendor, and I have become anxious that this form factor might die out. I secretly hope that there will be a galaxy note 8.9 in addition to the galaxy note 10.1 set for Q3, but I'm not seeing anything.
Then today I read this news on the new kindle fire rumors, and lo and behold, a 8.9 size with 1080hd screen is there!
http://m.cnet.com/news/at-least-three-kindle-fire-2-tablets-one-with-4g-on-the-way/57467294
This kind of torments my heart. I'm glad to see a manufacturer come up with these specs and hope it prods others too. But I'm not really glad it's a Amazon kindle. I tried the kindle fire for about a month before selling it, and I was quite disappointed at the sluggishness, box like design, and I'm not sure I trust Amazon to build a quality tablet anymore. And I fear Amazon will be more restrictive in terms of root-and port-ability, not to mention lack even more developer support.
But then if this is the only 8.9 tablet on the market at the end of the year and foreseeable future, I might feel compelled. What are your thoughts on the next 8.9 tablet for you?

if we can hack it and use a real version of Android then i can NOT wait for an 8.9 update.
I hate the Amazon interface, i personally really prefer Google's Android and the variety of choice in Google Play.

Yeah, if the hardware is good enough(quad core and 1080p), and it is hackable, then I guess I'll consider the kindle too.
Though Amazon app store had a few good deals, I have to say, I much prefer the Google play too (as much as I dislike that name), if only to avoid update lags.
I so do wish we'll have more 8.9 inch options later this year!

Same here. All I wait is for an HD version with quad-core 8.9 and I will pounced on it.

I'm surprised the 8.9 size isn't more popular to be honest. I've always though that the iPad was a hell of a cumbersome thing, even the 2nd and 3rd generation versions, but that the Kindle Fire and other 7" devices tend to be almost like slightly overgrown smartphones, too small for web browsing and barely an investment in themselves unless you're a heavy eBook reader. 8.9 got it bang on but doesn't seem to have kicked off, to the point that Sammy haven't done an 8.9 Tab2.
Do remember though that the Tab2 range is almost the same product manufactured differently to get the price down (and redesigned to avoid further law suits from Apple) so other than waiting for OS updates there's not much of a disadvantage owning a Galaxy Tab 8.9.
But yeah, the 8.9 is the Goldie-Locks tablet, it's not too big, not too small, just right!
Personally, if we can get a Jelly Bean port after the official ICS release then I'm set.
I don't play intensive games so have no need for quad core anything. I'll be sticking with my GT8.9 for some time I think.
I do enjoy my 8.9 as well, but I think Samsung and other manufactures put out a bunch of different sizes the last couple years to feel out the market. Its looking like the 10inch and 7inch are prolly gonna become the normal going forward with most manufacturers if I were to guess.

Which is really tragic, considering he majority of consumers never had much of a chance to try out a 8.9. If anything, I hope a kindle fire does come out in 8.9, if only, so that it peaks consumer and manufacturer interest in the 8.9 form factor!

Well, not that I'd wish to restrict the choice of others, but if you think about it, the tab 8.9 if the same height as the iPad, which speaks to it's optimal size, yet it's lighter and with 16:10 dimensions good for watching movies too ... so I do wish and think companies should show more love for 8.9s.

8.9 is the right size but too many people dont know it :-(
I have tried the Ipad, the original thrive and galaxy, a trans prime, the fire and the Acer 7 inch, and my beloved touchpad and the galaxy tab 8.9 is just the perfect size and the screen is much prettier than ips displays. I love it. But the tegra 2 is just not enough. My poor tab just can't handle HD vids. So sadly my touchpad gets more use than my galaxy. Also I wish it had expandable memory. Come on Sammy why didn't you give this beauty an SD card slot? So while I agree that the 8.9 is just the right size it is due for an upgrade. Sadly it doesn't look as though one will be here soon enough. So for me its just waiting for someone to make a tab with a prettier screen and expandable memory. Unfortunaty for me none of the new tabs have a good screen. Ips displays have washed out colors when you compare them to an Ipad or a Samsung tablet. As for the 8.9 fire 2 it could be a decent machine. I put an aokp ics rom on my friends kindle and its a decent tablet now. Just a bit too small for me. Only time will tell but here's to my prayers for Sammy to make an 8.9 2 with a real processor and a SD card slot! That would be the best.
I've owned: Transformer w/dock., Iconia A500, Toshiba Thrive, Streak 7, Evo View, 8" china pad, Evo View, Archos 80 G9 and of course the 8.9. Left in the stable are the
Evo View: I'm on sprint so having the data plan is nice, but it sits on my nightstand on wifi and used once in a blue moon. Will probably sell it soon while it still has some value. 7" is just too small and not enough of a size difference over my 4" phone. I like the stylus, but haven't used it as much as I thought I would. The data plan is nice because some wifi at the hospitals I go to have a sign in, and for some odd reason webmail doesn't work while on it. Really odd. It was the same on the touchpad. Yet the Apple crowd had no issues. Haven't figured that one out.
Archos 80 G9: I paid $125 via Staples last month for it. Like the 4:3 8" size. Dual core OMAP, connectivity out the wazoo (full size usb, hdmi, microSD and microUSB), and I've been on official ICS since day one. The screen isn't bad. It has a little more heft and big side bezels, but it's comfy and more comfy to hold than any 10.1". Plus it has the built in kickstand. Another reason to ditch the Evo View. I have a dock for it, and I wouldn't need the dock to keep it upright on the nightstand. still not my ideal screen size as HD content is no better than a 7" tablet, or slightly less even. Not sure on that math.
And the 8.9: Tegra 2 is fine for me. No hi profile blu ray rips for me. I have the usb dongle for a card reader. Great screen even if it is PLS. The size and weight is the perfect trade off for carrying between the 10" and 7" while still having enough real estate to make media viewing and reading enjoyable. Best screen size out there if you ask me.
That being said, I want a 9 or 4:3. I think that's the best of both worlds. HD would still be a bit larger than a 7" tablet and everything else would be a nice 4:3 9" . And I want built in connectivity. microSD and HDMI are key. So until that comes, I have no need to buy another tablet unless the 8.9 and Archos become obsolete.
Yeah, I getcha... An 8.9 with Tegra 3 would be nice. For me, well, HD Movies on this little screen, personally I wouldn't notice/appreciate the difference, I watch some SD stuff and stream Netflix on there when I can't use my TV and it looks sharp as anything to be honest, heh... Tegra 3 would be nice for gaming though.
I know what you mean, I've been hoping to hear some rumors of a Galaxy Note 8.9 as well. Honestly the 10-inch form factor feels too big, and the 7-inch too small. The 8.9 felt just felt perfect and the S-Pen is now a big deal for me on a tablet. Stick in some internals like whats in the Galaxy SIII (quad-core, 2 GB ram, NFC/Android Beam, Jelly Bean, and 2MP FFC/5MP Rear Camera). Bring back the IR blaster from the original Tab 8.9, and a 1080p screen (to keep in competition with the Retina display). Then all they'd have to do is keep it thin and light (not plastic-like) and I'd probably camp out for that one, even if it costs $599
I ask this because I need a tablet for my 1 month summer vacation soon, and I'm not sure if I can buy a Nexus 7 at that point yet.
Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 actually costs the same, or even cheaper than Nexus 7 right now. Tab 7.7 will also be only slightly more expensive, because the Nexus 7 will be sold at a higher price in my country after tax and so on.
So, disregarding the price, would 7.0 or 7.7 be a good choice too?
7.0 is very affordable, but i think the resolution isn't as good as the Nexus or 7.7?
7.7- I love the hardware, it's slim, AMOLED screen, and the battery life is great. I've heard about lagging though. However, I will probably root and use a stock android rom.. or use a launcher that replaces samsung's crap.
Both the samsung tablets also have sd card support. They do lack the development scene of the Nexus though.. but I am not someone who messes around with the custom rom a lot. I just need one simple clean one, then I'm good.
Would you choose the samsung tabs if they all cost the same price? why or why not?
Bought this tablet and gave my GTab 2 7" to my girlfriend and couldn't be happier. This thing is miles ahead of it.
This is the best 7in. Out there period. In terms of power and quality. Nothing even remotely comes close to touching the power this device has. Or at least below the 10 in. Range. Get one asap! Lol. So happy to have one.
Samsung tab in 7in. Range sucks, spec wise. Not worth the extra cost to pay for a lower spec device. Samsung smiled screen good but nexus 7 has an excellent display also. Actually aside from infinity pad, nexus 7 has the highest dpi of any android tablet out. So the resolution looks even better and sharper. If we go by the way apple rates their screens, nexus 7 has a retina display. Nexus 7 has like 216 dpi. New ipad3 has 250 or something close to that. So the screen quality on nexus 7 is top notch for a tablet, especially an android one.
Isn't this the only 7 inch running quad core at the moment?
I had the GTab 7.7, it was the best sub-10" tablet, before the Nexus 7 came out (or if you must have 3G).
However, JB on it sucked due to wifi problem. Samsung is not exactly know if fast when it comes to OS updates.
Don't even have mine yet but I've been shafted by enough devices that I don't think I'll ever buy anything except official Nexus devices from here on out.
It's so smooth and fast' nothing lags' even web browsing is a great experience. My wife is extremely jealous...

Yes, its the only quad core (really 5) tegra3 7in. Tablet out now. Plus its the only one that can play all tegra3 optimized apps n games. Plus its the only 7in. To have really fast ddr3 ram. Then aside from infinity pad, it has the highest dpi of any android tablet. Really making it have the best display for this size factor. Then its the only android tablet period running official jellybean firmware.
BUTTERY SMOOTH...very fast! Plain n simple it works great. I will likely buy my woman one also.
Nexus 7 hands down.
I actually looked at the Galaxy 2 7" last night to see how it compares. The hardware across the board is grossly inferior. From the CPU, to the GPU to the resolution, to the DPI, etc.
The Samsung does have some added features (ie: gorilla glass, sd card, etc.), but it hurts where it counts.
If you disregard the price the new Toshiba 7.7 (AMOLED screen) is better as general hardware and construction, no question here.I think right now is th best 7" tablet you can buy. But it cost more than double which I can not justify (it is better but it's not "twice" as good).
My relative have one of these and, having set it up for her, it feels very nice in the hand and the few apps I loaded seemed really quick. Reviewers tend to be in agreement that this is, not just the best budget tablet, but the best Android tablet - period.
there is ZERO reason to buy any other ~7" android tablet, whether taking into account pricing or not.
I sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to buy the Nexus 7 and I absolutely do NOT regret doing it. I love it. Best selling decision I ever made.
And the original Tab line is BETTER than the Tab 2 line (look it up, they cut a lot of stuff to make it cheaper and the performance of the Tab 10.1 actually BESTED the Tab 2 line)
So bottom line, I can't see why anyone who choose the Tab 2 7 or 7.7 over the Nexus.
I have the nex7 and the gtab 7.7, disregarding price the gtab is better.

Well he doesn't really have to. The 7.7 is a beast. Don't even think about how other Gakaxy Tabs stack up with the Nexus 7. That is like comparing the Galaxy Ace to the Galaxy Nexus, of course the Nexus wins that. The tab 7.7 however, is a different story. It is pretty much the Galaxy S3 of tablets.
The thing maybe a year old but it is still a beast.
-Super Amoled plus display at 197 ppi, not that much lower than the 215 ppi of the Nexus 7. Exact same resolution actually but a bigger screen on the 7.7
- lightest tablet ever
- one of the thinnest tablets ever, a lot thiner than the Nexus 7
- perfect size and form factor. Aluminum build but still feather light
- Best battery life out of any tablet including the iPad 2
- Exynos processor (dated now but insane a year ago)
Pretty much can go down the list. It is a premium device.
Now the Nexus 7 has some pretty big advantages, especially price, CPU, GPU, and Jelly Bean, it is still hard to decide somewhat.
You are comparing an older high end car to a newer consumer car. Not as clear cut as some people make it out to be. If I were to ballpark it, the tab 7.7 would be a 2010 Acura TSX and the Nexus 7 would be a 2012 Civic SI. I would probably go with the Civic myself but some might go for the TSX.
My first experience with a 7-inch tablet was an Acer A-100. I was never really satisfied with it and ended up selling it. I don't know what made me decide to pick up the N7, but I'm very happy with it. For $250, the building quality it outstanding and it's very fast.

Now the Nexus 7 has some pretty big advantages, especially price, CPU, GPU, and Jelly Bean, it is still hard to decided somewhat.

For someone who was against getting a 7 inch because I thought it was going to be useless since I had a 10 inch.. I would have never thought how much I hate having my transformer this whole time. Thing is amazing. Just too bad my device is defective.

Don't have any larger tablet to compare but honestly my screen is only on par with the nook tablet. Pretty sad... mine is defective. This thing is supposed to have good saturation, viewing angles and black levels. Mine has good viewing angles but there's a little light bleed and other than pitch blacks, the gray scale is awful. To top it off mine stutters and has an unresponsive screen. Hope my RMA tag comes in soon. Ascetically its the best hands down.

I actually have both, and though I love the Nexus, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has a special place - I love it. It proved to me that specs didn't matter that much when it comes to every day use (had many tablets, including the biggest disappointment of all time - the Transformer Prime).
It was embarrassing that my Tab 2 was more enjoyable to use than the Prime, but it was, that is simply a fact. Browsing is what I do most on a tablet, and the Prime was laggy as hell. Though I love Chrome as a browser (the only one I use on PC), Chrome on the Nexus is simply not good. Still behind the stock browser (IMHO), so overall, I find browsing more enjoyable on my Tab 2 7.0.
I can't wait for the Tab 2 to get JB (if it does).
If you had to pick one though,go with the Nexus 7. For the Price, unbeatable.
Hey all, I did not see a topic like this posted so forgive me if there already is one.
I am looking to possibly buy my first tablet, and probably the HD+. I currently own a Samsung Galaxy Note (original, european version) which has a 1280x800 5.3" screen. Thus why I haven't bought a tablet. The nexus 7 was tempting but the low resolution relative to my phone and the lack of SD slot dissuaded me. Plus, while 7" is larger than my 5.3" phone, it wasn't enough.
Now enter the HD+ with its byond HD resolution, 9" of real estate and i'm interested. I played with one at my local B&M store and was impressed. I wanted to check xda first to see what the development community is like before I buy. So far the only negatives are:
* Most of the videos on youtube call it "laggy" or "slow" or "unresponsive" Is this fixed at all?
* Complete lack of USB support. Proprietary charger, etc
* Pretty heavy compared to 7" tablets
I'm posting this essentially to request someone convince me I need this tablet and that the devs are behind it with rooting, etc. How stable is CM10 now on it, for example?
Wow this forum is completely dead. Guess i have my answer.

nook hd+
I go my hands on a 16gig nook hd+ cheap i love it i chose it because the 7 inch tablets seem fine for reading kind of like a paperback but i also enjoy reading comics and way to small on a 7inch. The 10.1 inch tablets are a joke for reading books and are way to long for reading comics like holding a stone tablet in your hands. The nook hd+ and fire hd 8.9 seemed like that sweet spot i was looking for. I chose the nook hd+ over the fire 8.9 for many reasons first the deal i got on it $220 plus a teal book case, the screen is fantastic, micro sd card slot i dont use any streaming and i dont pay for downloads i have a giant harddrive full of mp4 videos epub books and cbz comic files i load myself, and right out of the box the nook hd+ reads .cbz comic files and pretty good at it so i didnt need to pay for anything, root or sideload any apps.
Now i read all the reviews on the nook hd they all reported lag unfinished operating system and nook store didnt have the same amount of multimedia support as the others. Im running the latest software on my nook hd+ and i have zero issues zero. And i have way to many of my own files to load to care if the nook store dosent have a certain movie ill download the latest torrent it plays my bluray 720p mp4 rips like a champ ill download latest books and use clibre to convert and load my epubs and ill download comic files and use comic rack to convert to .cbz
It comes down to you if you want to pay for downloads go with another tablet if you want to load your own stuff you wont get more bang for your buck then nook hd+
Plus if your gonna root that sd card slot is a must have
Oh ya i dont care about a front or back camera on a 9inch tablet thats why i have a phone and laptop
My advice: buy!
Then put CM10 as to verygreen on it and never look back.
I have the direct comparison to a nexus 7 and it is no contest. The screen of the HD+ is absolutely beautiful, the speed of the OS is absolutely okay - much better that the N7 running 4.2 actually.
With a 32 or 64 GB Sd-card you have tons of space.
I would say, atm the HD+ is the best value tablet available (thanks to the developments going on here).

Definitely buy.
I too was looking at a new tablet for 2013, similar to you. I have Kindle Fire 1st generation so I know what 7 inch tablet can do for me. Movies and reading books was fine but surfing and comics - not that good. I ordered the 64gb version and looking forward to it
The only downside I was considering is lack of front facing camera for Skype but I solved that problem with a new phone. Another downside is the speakers location on only one side but I can live with that.

Best value tablet, and with rooting/cm its all you need. Reason forum is quiet is there isn't much need for anything!

It's 32gb. In my mind I added the 32gb on board with my 32gb mem card.

Nexus 10 is a fine device but for me it doesn't bring anything extra to a tablet that I need. Of course different people will have different needs.

I hear ya. The only major problem with the HD+ is the proprietary charger and lack of Bluetooth. If you're cool with that its all good.

Bluetooth works, no lack at all! I stream music and use MAPS with my phone's GPS using BT.
I've had mine for about a week now. Some very good help on here for installing google play store (without even rooting) and booting cm10 from the sd card. That's why I got it. The main drawbacks in my mind was no access to play store, and proprietary version of android. But those issues have been taken care of by folks on this forum, and the only thing left as negatives were the proprietary charging/usb port and no camera... I think I'll be able to live with those.
I still haven't gotten adb working but adbwireless seems to do the trick so that's not an issue now either. I'm on the Buy It side as well.

Aside from rooted stock being allergic to to any changes to system files I quite like the Nook HD. It is a good size for reading at the table but so was my old Galaxy Tab 7+. I could have gone for the N7 but I have a bitter hatred against Google for deciding on us that we don't need that micro sd port. Sounds abit like a certain other company no?
Buy if you are ok with that limitation (only if you are on stock though)
Frankly I liked the Nook Color the most
On paper, this is simply a ridiculous comparison. Like comparing a Honda civic to a BMW
Nook hd+
* Made by a company so inept it has now basically given up making its own device and is now just selling low end overpriced Samsung tablets with nook app pre-installed.
* Some kind of crappy 1ghz dual core processor. 1gig ram shared with GPU, which means about 750M actually free for system and user. 17000 on antutu
* price: $120 shipped
* 9" 1920x1200. Quite decent screen actually. No light bleed *cough* nexus 9 *cough*
Galaxy tab S
* made by Samsung, pretty much only company making profit off of android devices -- besides Microsoft lol.
* Octa core exynos 1.9ghz. 3 gig ram. 40000 on antutu
* price: $479 plus tax minus $100 rebate. Approx $420.
So how do they compare?
Well the screen is more beautiful on the galaxy, but then it is more beautiful than on all LCD tablets. This is why I bought it. Text is about as crisp on the Nook. I think I actually prefer the text on the iPad air (don't own one, but I've used one). Maybe I just like the fonts better. (I think android fonts are frankly ugly. They did the same thing Microsoft did, make their own Helvetica, but Arial is not as nice as Helvetica and neither is Robotica.)
Performance: the apps that are smooth on the galaxy are smooth on the nook. The apps that are laggy on the nook, like tapatalk, that I was hoping would be better on the tab, well they are laggy too. A little bit better, but not much. In fact, one app I use a lot, amber rss reader, actually seems smoother on the nook. Images pop in faster.
Where the tab clearly wins is in 3D games, which I don't play much of. Getting too old Also, apps don't have to reload because you have 3 gig ram. But in general, if you run the two side by side, no way you'd say one should cost 3.5x the other. Not having used the nook for a while, I was shocked last night to see how well it does against the tab. Or maybe I was shocked to see how much NOT better the tab is.
Nook is running CM 11. I've tried every ROM and kernel available on xda for the tab. And I do mean EVERY. I'm a ROM slut Using nova launcher on both.
TL;DR: galaxy tab s surprisingly not a lot better than nook hd+
Sorry mate but dont know how you can compare the nook hd to the tab s.
Tab wins down in every way but thats just my own opinion
I'm not saying it does not win, but it does not blow it away like the price I paid for and specs indicate.
I have a nook hd and hd+ and those screens look horrible. I have a tab pro(looking at getting a tab s) there is no comparison. The samsung is better in every way. Its smoother, faster, better screen, cameras when needed(video chats and quick pics of the kids), led flash/flashlight and I can go on. To me its worth every extra penny
I have a tab 7.0 plus and a note 8 and both those screens are better to look at than the nooks. The nooks are so grainy looking. Hi res yes but poor quality
