I am new to Rooting and such. I have heard a lot of talk about ROMs and Kernals. Are they the same thing? I have flashed the rom 42One for my HTC one from Sprint. Is there a kernal that goes with the Rom? I am sorry if i sound stupid. please help.. Thank you in advance for all the Devs that work so hard to make our phones awesome!!!
We all start somewhere.
They are two different things.
This thread will explain a lot

The kernel is the base the os sits on

In short its kinda like a car and engine. You buy the car and the engine comes with... The car is like your ROM... You can customize it to your liking but its the engine that powers the car. Engine = kernel. Swap engines for more power or better efficiency. Car looks the same but behaves different. You can tweak the engine/kernel as well but that doesn't really alter the aesthetics of the car/ROM but it can make the ROM perform faster or have better battery life. I'm half asleep but I think this makes sense lol.
That is the best explanation!! I know cars and that was perfect!

Just felt I should share this with everyone since I don't think a lot of people know about it yet.I know I never heard of it until the other day.
Trying to.get.an idea of what others think.
I guess there has been some controversy between Blackdroid (UltimateDroid) and the CyanogenMod team over the likeness of Ultimate Droid to CyanogenMod 7. They are almost identical, however, Ultimate Droid offers far more customization and every bit as snappy. As most of you know, the CM7 Final was released nearly 24 hours ago. I obviously downloaded and flashed it immediately to check it out. Honestly, there just wasn't anything special enough to keep it, I immediately restored my UD backup.
I certainly don't want to get in the middle of any beef between developers, after all these are both phenomenal ROMs.I just know I am always looking to try new ROMs and other methods of tweakness and hope others would speak up...
Obviously, I take no credit for anything here, just sharing info...

Seems like if you read the forums enough life goes in circles, doesn't it?
Tapatalk Pro Sig. Yep, boring.
Just more customizable. It allows you to easily change things like themes, boot animations/sound, and system font (which might be my favorite feature). That, or the ability to add a custom message (or name/nickname) to the lockscreen.
some will prefer CM still and certainly nothing wrong with that.

Tried his work on my d1. Nothing really special. Stopped using his stuff after that whole thing happened.
People are still talking about things that went down a year ago? Wow.
UD Rom is the best hands down.
Edit: I could care less about the year old beef...bunch of whining babies. I'd steal your lunch on the playground if I could.
UD is much more stable then CM. Faster, smoother and far superior battery life. Who cares about the stale drama between the 2 open source deVs. Its all about the final product and UD takes the cake.

Just out of curiosity, are all the additions aesthetic, or are there any performance enhancements over CM7? Like the power control widgets or the lockscreen gestures and things like that.
Wow.... I think this is a record for the longest running UD thread.
For the record, I can't stand aosp roms but would choose UD over cm any day. Especially with cm7. I think cm7 took a step back with removing their custom options and adding the theme app. The only "gimik" they have on cm7 is that its Ginger Bread. Other then that, nothing stands out. The last "good" cm release was cm6 rc3, hands down. And UD is pretty consistent with their releases.
Found my problem. It was that the webpage was set to mobile instead of full size. Once I clicked on the bottom I was able to download.
I'm looking for a ROM for my girlfriend's Captivate. Basically the one giant caveat she has with her current ROM (CM7 stable) is horrible battery life. I'm talking -10% from unplugged with absolutely no screen on time. One problem with the phone is the power button is stuck, so she relies on volume wake and sleep from the notification power widget. I need something that can provide these two features (can be GB or ICS, doesn't matter) plus the best possible battery life (I know the usual YMMV, but at least on an average). She doesn't even care about other features since she only uses Facebook, Gtalk, and the regular calling and messaging features, so it can be as stripped down as possible. Oh, and she likes Touchwiz, so if it can have that it'll be a nice bonus. Thank you!

fasty
I have been looking up the same thing for a day or two now and I have read lots of good things about Fasty ROM. I am about to flash the latest kk4. Let you know how it goes.
If things like...
FM Radio
Camera
UMTS Video Calling
etc.. etc..
DO NOT work, and will just as likely NEVER WORK on custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, then as far as I see it, it's a loss.
So what ~are~ the advantages to using something like CM10, besides the OHHH SHINY SHINY Jellybeen.
I mean yeah I can now use Chrome on my SGS, and that's about the only bright spot I see in it.
But I figure there has to be something more compelling out there that I'm either failing to see, or perhaps unwilling to see.
Would love to see your feedback on this!
People care about different things for there needs. You might want a fully functional camera whereas the other guy doesn't care.
Personally I would never choose CM10 over CM9. Why? Because the video recording and playback on CM10 is annoying and choppy. The battery life is awful compared to CM9. I wouldn't give up CM9 and good battery life, a properly working camera for a very little tiny extra speed.
The next guy to comment might not care about that as much and say CM10 is better.
Preference and wants/needs.

Two things I dislike about SpritFM are:
1: It's not free. Feel free to call me cheap, but why should I have to purchase this App for 1.99€ when it should be standard.
I was under some delusion that Samsung had even made this "Driver" available last summer for the benefit of the Open Source Community.
What ever happened to that? The way I recalled reading it we should've had a working FM by now.
2: I'd also like to air on the side of caution! Its not like SpritFM has the best reputation.
Or this is to say that SpritFM has a reputation of wrecking Phones Speakers.
This may, or may no longer be the case, but again SEE POINT 2!
I also love the Video Call function of my Phone, I have read and understood sadly why that's never gonna happen.
And I'll coincide that the Camera might be just down to FUD.
But again. What are the advantages to updating, besides the OOOHHH I updated because I could?
Is it really just for Chrome?
Well, for me,I don't care about the camera's working or not.'Cause all i want is test new things, new functions. If i want to use ,I'll flash back.
I am looking for a fast, simple, battery saving rom for a novice user.
Please help
Since no one wants to help ya I say the oxygen1mod Tom is a good fast smooth and good battery rom

I'm on cm7 with a Holo launcher and m2sd and it's pretty good. I was on evervolv 4.1 for a couple months and it was pretty stable, the biggest issue I had was call answer delay of several seconds. Now that I'm using the phone part of my n1 a lot more I thought I should go back to gb not to mention my girlfriend has an iPhone 4s and thinks iPhones are the best thing ever, and since she doesn't understand custom roms and stuff I don't want her to experience any kind of glitch or freeze when she picks up my phone.
I used a port of oxygen on an old LG optimus one I had and sold and it made that phone seem way quicker than it was.

Honestly for me personally, the stock MDL ROM with some tweaks/KT-SGS4 Kernel/mods is freakn smooooothh as heck! I see no need for a custom ROM... yet! So far I'm loving this phone and I've only had it for a day, can;t wait for that next update hopefully we get it soon to fix some stuff. Other than that, this thing is smooth as butter!
I haven't even rooted mine yet and it's been over a week. I usually root the first day or two.

I kinda agree... Except there are some cool root apps... And I wanted to uninstall a bunch of bloat apps.
That's why I went with team Sonic's freegs4.... It just like stock with some basic tweaks and some apps are uninstallable.

I will agree that this phone offers the best stock experience I've ever had. If you're a tweaker like me though, custom ROM's are a must. I hightly recommend Blu Kuban. AOSP ROM's are also quite enjoyable, especially with Halo.
Also, man I wish the Hyperdrive ROM that's out for the Verizon variant would make its way to us. That ROM looks amazing.

You think you got something smooth, run a custom rom with the tweaks, you will not go stock again. It is up you. You can always go back to stock, run WanamLite, Basically stock with the tweaks, super fast, and just as stable. Sorry, but you are missing out.

You're all fricken crazy. Lol. Why run a custom ROM? Get rid of bloatware, get rid of a lot of lag, use custom PRL's when Sprint's amazing service does what it does, enhance the experience, increase the terrible battery life, install AOSP, etc... But that's just me.

Lol, some of us bought it for the hardware - I think the whole eye watching thing is gimmick, and the pedometer is consistently off. AOSP really delivers in terms of speed and customization, which many desire. Speed + Customization > Gimmicks.
I'd also like to add that I'm still running stock so....
+1 stock. I like gimmicks

Every person commenting in this thread I think is why we all belong to XDA Developers. Do what you will with your device and enjoy it, we have many options available to us, thanks to all the great developers here. It personally took me a month to root my phone. And right now I can't really imagine having a AOSP ROM on it.

Absolutely no ASOP for me and definitely no CM but that's just me. If I were buying strictly for the hardware, I might very well have gone a different route. I bought for the hardware and the software.

Just like life you can live life the way it is or tweak it and make it your own life the way u want with the options available.
can i root after i get my SG4 flashed from US Cellular to Criket without messing up the flash.
Also Can i install custom Roms after i get my SG4 flashed to criket without messing up the flash.
once im flashed and running on criket i am too scared to mess it up
please let me know hwat i should do. i can't even find someone that can flash it yet. its very hard
im very sad i love this phone.
Cm/aosp is always smoother since there is no bloat, compare 1.5GB for stock rooted to 300mbs for an aosp based ROM. But the features are gone. And the camera isn't as good.
