[Q] HTC One (M7) Camera Viewfinder Issue - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This just happened suddenly one day. I turned my camera on and the viewfinder only picks up an image (it captures in a fraction of a second, mostly black) and just stays like that. However when I press the camera button it does take perfect pictures. It however works fine when I'm capturing video (after pressing the video button, or else it stays almost black like the camera).
Some help or advice would be really helpful.
Its a factory unlocked HTC One bought from the UK.
Thanks

How I fixed this problem!
I had the same problem with a frozen viewfinder.
To fix this I long pressed the power button until the power menu appeared.
The pressed restart (not power off). When phone restarted the camera worked fine.
Hope this helps.

Confirming--I had the same problem and restart solved it. (Powering off & on didn't).

The Power off & on won't work because you probably have Fast boot which won't do the same effect as a restart from clearing everything and starting over

OMG, the fix was that simple?! it totally worked! my wife updated her M7 to lollipop and had all kinds of issues (slugglish, battery drained faster) so i have just refused the update (even though it constantly nags me!) and i thought that my camera app was basically broken because of my refusal to upgrade. and all this time it only required a reboot! doh! yeah, i've turned my phone off and on many times since the problem began, so it simply didn't occur to me that a restart would do something different. honestly, i think i assumed turning it off and back on was more thorough than a restart, but hey, good to know!
(i am so happy to have found this, do you know how hard it was to find, and how many different times i've hunted? i wasn't sure what to call the problem, since it takes a sentence to describe "it focuses at the moment the camera app is initiated then won't continue to update the picture" (and even that's not very clear), and i was searching for "M7 focus problem" and "M7 camera problem"... not sure why, but including the word "viewfinder" just didn't occur to me, and my lengthier description was not very searchable (i tried variations on it, once upon a time, too). glad i got frustrated with the phone again and persevered today. i hope this last bit helps other people searching who likewise don't think to use viewfinder, since it sorta seems like an issue with the focus even though it did seem to be able to focus without showing you it was doing so... i finally found this with the following search: "m7 camera problem 2015 -pink -purple -tint")

Help Please!! Incredible S Camera fatal problem!

Hey guys,
Not sure anybody met this problem before.
My camera just happen to restarting when I open it. Last time it works fine and now it's like this. I didn't change anything in the system or install any software. Just restarting. To be specifically, when I entered the camera, camera vision shows, then screen black after 1 second and vision comes back. It repeats again and again. But, if I switch to cam record during the vision appears, the cam recording function works good.
Not only the camera app, but other apps involving a camera function like barcode scanner, google shoppers, the camera restarting again and again.
Anybody knows what's going on?
Doesn't sound like software problem. I suggest take it to the service center for replacement.
My camera has stopped working all together, every time I open the camera or camcorder app, it quickly flashes the icon and then either returns to the home screen or it hangs on a black screen. Although our problems are different, I wonder if other people are having troubles with their cameras. I have done a hard reset and it still doesn't work, so mine also seems to be a hardware issue and I will be returning mine shortly, perhaps you should do the same.
stupid question probably: have you tried a reboot? and i mean a real reboot.
Disable the fastboot or pull the battery, maybe it helps maybe it doesnt.
If thats not going to work i would say: factory reset and if it still doesnt work its time for the service center.
it can also be that there are some faulty images/files on your sd-card so if you have a spare, try that one
I had the same issue with my camera, starting with the logo and then only black screen. Other apps using the camera like Barcode scnanner had the same issue. After contacting HTC they told me to remove the battery for 30s and then reboot. That did the trick for me and the camera went back to normal.
Came across similar problem with a HTC desire, turned out to be the sd card having a fault! Not sure why but when replaced SD card the thing worked great as it should. Just a thought for you but a hard reset and battery out for a minute or two could help.
Ty for the tips guys, will remember them, I learn something new everyday in here haha.

Try resetting the camera to factory default....
wipe it !!!!!!!
I had this problem, but restarting it solves it.
i think i know how 2 fix it...it is a weird roundabout solution
-goto ur gallery
-select the latest photo you have taken from your camera(or basically any photo taken from your mobile will work)
-here`s the tricky part...long press the photo, and select "show on map" from the menu
-let the mobile take its course using the maps installed on ur phone(it should take 2-3 mins max depending on ur speed of course)
-u r DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! the camera should work just fine now
***** what happens is that the photo tries to tag itself from the location involved which sends it 2 a continuous loop hence the camera stops working*****
if any queries,PM me

Works but only 1 time...now the front camera can't function
wipe and install new rom
if software problem
Boot into recovery
wipe cache and Dalvik Cache & reboot
If it is a software problem, ie. if it was working earlier, should revert back to working condition!
Old thread, I know, but might help someone
Cheers!
try removing battery for 30secs, then reboot
Did anyone get a fix for this problem?

Have you got a custom ROM or the stock ROM?

[Q] Note 3 screen wont turn off

As stated, screen will not go off via timeout or power button tap. Power button is recognized and will bring up shut down menu like normal.
Device is rooted (thanks DG) and had been running well for over a week. Defrosted all apps from tibu in case I got over zealous but no better. A factory reset has not cleared it up either. Hoping the oneclick from the root package will correct the issue, but thats not until I get home later this evening.
Has anyone experienced / recovered from this issue?
Smart stay is turned off
I've had noticeable lag like a few seconds and sometimes I wonder if it's going to shut off but it always does. Better set a dark lock screen wallpaper to conserve your battery

Thanks for the thoughts.
I had already gone through the standard - double check the settings, remove recent apps. When all that failed and a factory reset still didn't clear it up I was beginning to worry about some kind of hardware damage (don't see how since I treat it better than my child ).
Fortunately the one click from the root seems to have restored proper operation. Back to rooting and rebuilding!

I'm having the same problem, I rooted through vroot.... what do you mean one click fixed it little my incite would be helpful....
thank you
Mine just did this, scared the hell out of me It also didn't go into deep sleep before it started. (Not rooted).
Pulled the battery, waited 30 seconds, plugged it back in.... same thing. Waited a few minutes, seems to have sorted itself out.
Scary....
This is definitely a software bug and it is related to the Headphone detection bug that people are having too (it's actually the same bug causing both issues). This happens to me quite often after I restart my phone. It's kind of like the phone hangs during the startup process. I've also noticed that the wifi/bluetooth status that was present before restarting the phone (i.e. whether they on/off) doesn't get applied until the bug sorts itself out.
For me sometimes this works: open an app like Chrome and then hit the home button to get back to your launcher. This works 95% of the time for me. I'm wondering if it has something to do with not having Touchwiz set as the default launcher.
I'm experiencing this same problem. If I don't manually turn the screen off by tapping the power button, the screen will not timeout.

Phone shutsdown when Location enabled

Hi all,
I'm running out of ideas and could use another opinion please:
N6 running 5.0.2 (this is the second one incidentally, I sent the first one back for this same problem) - the phone will shutdown under certain circumstances. When this happens it does not restart, you have to press the power button to restart it. Mostly this happens when I use the Google Camera stock application to take a photo but only ever when the phone is not connected to WiFi. I have had it happen when I open the camera app as well (without taking a picture), if you put your ear to the upper speaker as soon as the camera app is opened you can here a cell location signal (similar to the sound you hear when you put your phone near a speaker) and then the phone turns off. I can stop this happening by using a third party camera app. I can also stop this happening if I disable Google location.
Yesterday I wiped the phone, signed in with my Gmail, and took 25 pictures, all OK. I then turned on Google Now, took one photo and the phone turned off. This is definitely something to do with location data but I don't understand why nobody else is experiencing this ? Maybe the phone is faulty but I'm going to have a hard to explaining that as I sent the last one back for the same reason.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon.
Glad I'm not the only one having this issue. I've seen this happen on my N6 too, both on 5.0.x as well as on 5.1. I've seen this happen even while unlocking the phone (I have face unlock enabled), and yes this happens mostly when using the camera. Never knew it has to do something with location services.
I'm running completely stock and unrooted by the way. I guess I should try flashing the factory image
Yes same with me, stock phone unrooted and although using the camera is the best way to get this to happen you are right, it sometimes happens at other times as well. If I go to an area with no WiFi and poor phone signal I can get it to happen everytime the Google Camera app is opened, so I have to resort to taking pictures in Airplane mode.
This has happened to me since I have had this phone and its replacement and I am curious to know why, when you open the Google camera app, if you immediately put your ear to the upper speaker it becomes active for about 3 seconds ? After that three second burst of sound the phone will turn off. To me, it sounds like a location signal is being sent when the camera is opened.
Yet turning off geolocation?

Strange behavior from Nexus 6 Display

My N6 is running Android 7.0, have not had problems until a couple of days ago.
The right half of my display started scrolling while, the left side of the display was normal. I powered it off and back on a couple of times and, the issue was still there; I panicked and did a factory reset from the "Settings" menu hoping that would solve the problem, it did not; I still had a jacked up display.
Is this a failure mode that anyone else has seen?
I powered the phone off and, turned it back on with the volume control button pressed and, it booted into safe mode(?) then, I toggled the mode to "Restart" and, upon restart, my display was normal. This was not the end as, it will occasionally be split screen when I unlock it. I have discovered that sometimes if I receive or make a call the display will return to normal, if not, I just power cycle it into the safe-recovery mode (but not do anything else) then toggle to restart and, it's all good until next time.
Is it possible that another device (blue-tooth) in close proximity could cause my phone display to act up?

So weird, but same thing has been happening to me the past few days. But I have a justified cause. It started immediately after installing Franco Kernel.

It is a known hardware issue in some N6 phones, some have it and it only shows up on certain rom / kernel combos, even stock. One thing that helps is to use the interactive kernel governor and/or the down sampling factor. Of course you will need a kernel manager app for that.

That's good to know.
I inserted the Bluetooth question because, coincidentally or not this issue presented when I acquired a wristwatch ($19.00 from China) that connected to my phone via Bluetooth, It had it's own fitness app which I installed (which did not work). To me, there seems to be more "connection" than expected as, the fault thing only seems to happen when the watch was powered on (but not even connected via Bluetooth). If there was a bug caused by the companion app, that should have been taken care of by the factory reset.
I'm going to do some "scientific testing" by, not powering on the watch for a week and see if the issue reoccurs. Meanwhile, I will read up on kernel manager apps.
I've since flashed stock pn, and now elementalx. It's not acted up yet. Seemes to be a better performance kernel. We'll see how battery is. Sorry to hijack your thread!

Well, so much for "scientific testing" and wishful thinking.....didn't take long to eliminate the wristwatch, now to fix the problem.

phone randomly turning off

Hey all just checking to see if anyone has same issue, it is persisting beyond an update. I plug in for night and usually every morning screen is off. Takes me holding down power button for ten seconds for it to come back. Not sure if I'm rebooting phone and it was on or if it was off.
Same here. Got it 2 times. No idea!!!
Exactly same issue, happens every 3-4 days.
I have same problem. After last update, that hapoend 3 times already. I wonder why...
Guys you have to search before posting. Here is the topic i made a while back. Have had this issue since then and i notice it because i have the aod (always on display) and the screen disappears.

Apps i suspect:
Blockada
Owntracks
Health mate
Spotify
Which of these are you guys using? Maybe we can deduce if its an app or some firmware issue.
From your list I'm using only Spotify. However I'm afraid that my phone was turning off even before I got this app. Will check anyway (already uninstalled it), and will let you know.
What I can say for sure is that my phone is switching off completely (not only display) as all my Bluetooth devices are disconnected straight away.
Hope we will find a solution for this issue!
it happened to me twice as well, having the phone for almost 2 months. It is a bit annoying and I dont understand why it happens. Among the list of these apps, I only have Spotify installed as well.
I dont have any apps from Your list. My phone turned off twice since last update, before that, for 1 month everything was ok. Now seems good aswell, we will see.
Seems like its none of the apps. My phone also completely disconnects from my devices and none of the buttons work (like double press volume button for camera). Have to hold the power button for a while and it starts up.
My Always on display is off
Random phone off was happening before the update and it's still happening after!
Also at times phone send to be so sluggish! 7gb+ram still available at that time.
North America 12gb/512gb.
All stock.

Ok, this issue together with the reported complaints of dust in camera lens has made me hold on the purchase of this phone.
Isn't there an official ROG II forum where all of you can complain so Asus can look into this issue maybe request dump files and resolve it once and for all?

Well my doesn't randomly turn off and I'm using blockada if that sheds any light...
Also, I don't use Spotify
I have deleted all the apps. Literally done a reset to the factory settings to see what happen and this morning phone turned off again... That's really annoying.
I have found relevant topic on Asus forum: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/12715/rog-phone-2-12-512-freezes-and-auto-restart-problem
Looks like they are not fully aware of the problem....
Is there any update for this case?
I'm experiencing random hangs as well after updated the firmware to the latest. It reads my power button and will shows the options to reboot but the UI is totally not responsive, have to hard reset it Everytime.
Since factory reset everything seems to be fine, however it's just few days since I have done it.
09/12/2019 - I can confirm that after factory reset everything works fine. If anything change I will let you guys know straight away.
02/01/2020 - Annnnnd it's back... After few weeks phone started switching off again and tbh the whole thing intensified. Yesterday phone went off 9 times. On top of that when it's off it drains battery like crazy - 5mins and 20% is gone. Bluetooth doesn't work properly as well. I'm aware that others don't have any problems with ROGII, however I'm afraid that due to personal experience I won't buy Asus phone again and won't recommend it to anyone.
Rog phone 2 turns off automatically
Same problem here happened twice in 2 days everytime phone is off i have to hard restart to switch on the phone
Does anybody got any solution for this problem
Yes I have faced a similar issue since I have updated to android 10 beta. This happened once. I left my phone for charging and the screen blacked out. I had to press the vol up+dwn and power to restore the functionality. Strange.

It happened to me twice in three months. The smartphone got stuck/freeze in standby mode: no response from the physical buttons or touch. I use the official android 9 rom.
I managed to restart it with the power button and volume up/down pressed for 15 seconds.

No apps install in the list nd it randomly switch off my phone it's software issue
Mine started turning off after 1 minute of use. Couldn't stop it nor control it.
Managed to barely get the WhatsApp backup and then factory reset the device. So far things are ok. But setting up from scratch is a pain in the ass.
I suspect that I tried to enable twin apps on WeChat while being on Nova Launcher. That may have triggered something, But I'm not sure.
