I'm trying to track down my battery drain issue. It seems to be related to data usage, since when the wi-fi is off the data indicator is going pretty much constantly. Using various apps to locate the running processes. Seems that latitude is running quite a bit, but freezing maps with TiBu does not seen to have a significant effect. I am on Illuminance 3.0 with the Samurai Kernal 1.4.2, but I had similar problems on Illuminance 2.0.1 I have not tried other ROM's lately, but since others are reporting excellent battery usage I don't think it's the ROM. I tried a fresh flash with TiBu restore of apps only with selective data restore and no luck. I would post a screen shot, but I can't seem to figure out the screenshot app from the market. Any thoughts on how to track down the offending app?
Additionally, I am having issues with the search button randomly activating.
How long is your battery lasting? How does it compare to what it was before? You could definitely try uninstalling the offending apps completely if you don't use them. Also, to save battery, I recommend using JuiceDefender. I don't use it all the time, only when I know I don't need constant internet access all the time. You can simply toggle it on/off from the widget, and it automatically turns data on when you unlock your phone so you can use it normally from there. Basically it saves power when you aren't using your phone, at the cost of not receiving instant notifications.

I'm playing a similar game of hide and seek and configured very similarly to you. I've just recently changed to the Corn Kernel to see if things may be different, and have replaced the battery with a hi-cap alternative.
I keep coming back to the email app as it is always sits in the high 30's in the battery usage chart. Swapped in a third party email app and the percentages dropped to normal ... but lost the syncing of my calendars.
Keep us posted on anything you might turn up. The ROM is great .. I'd just like to get more than 6 hours out of the battery.
Seems to be my enhanced email app. Froze it this morning and went all day with no charge, 12 1/2 hours and down to 40%. About what I usually get out of this phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Device: Samsung Galaxy S GT i9000
Symptoms:
When Charging Device is hot to the Touch in the upper half of the screen and on the rear between the camera and the heat vent.
Battery drains at around 15-25% per hour when IDLE. 15% when in deep sleep in airplane mode with ALL APPS KILLED. 25% when I leave ALL network connections open and allow sync.
Phone was new less than 2 months ago. Still under warranty and I will send it back if no ideas come from this but wanted to see if anyone had a solution as I have noticed HUNDREDS of similar posts all vaguely scattered through different threads on different sites around the web and this seems like the definitive place to come to see if anyone can put their finger on it.
When did this occur?:
A short while after (days) of flashing CM9 nightly from the beginning of June (05/06 I think but can't recall exactly).
Tests performed:
Purchased new battery and fully charged - no change.
Flashed stock GB ROMs where the issue had not occured - no change.
Cleared battery stats several times - no change.
Tried different modems/radios including Nexus S radios- no result
Current ROM: CM 7.2
Kernel: Glitch 13.1
Other ROMs/Kernels where the same results were achieved...
CM9 (latest nightlies)
Stock JVU, JVS, JW4 and JW5
Semaphore Kernel, Devils Kernel
I use Voodoo Sound/Colour kernels apart from the testing I did with stock ROMs
Will leave it on over night after clearing stats so you can see for yourselves.
Any questions ask away.
I should add:
Used OS Monitor and one of the more detailed CPU monitors to look at what was going on.
Did not appear at any time to be using what I would consider high CPU utilisation, typically trending between 0 and 30ish. No background apps running, all radios turned off.
The only anomaly that stuck out at me is that system_server was using ~105% of RAM which I would have thought was rather difficult. Made me wonder if there was something loading/unloading itself from RAM.
As I am a heavy music user I have tested the Mediaserver issue where corrupt files are continually scanned by mediaserver process. Removed all media files from both my external and internal storage then formatted both while on a stock ROM (JVU and JW4). There was no change.
EDIT: I should add - The thing that makes this so strange to me is that the battery decreases at a rapid rate when Battery stats regarding usage DO NOT CHANGE. The percentages for the apps that WERE using the battery - i.e. winamp/mediaserver/android system do not change.
The reason I have posted this is that i have seen literally HUNDREDS of people posting this very same issue but never in the same place and never getting an answer.
Also - Thankyou to the kind mod/admin who approved my account so I can edit stuff. It was getting a bit annoying for the first week there.
Re
Hi,
To be honest I never heard/read of the problem you are describing. Most users report high battery drain on a certain ROM/kernel/modem but you say you have tried quite a lot.
If the phone is new, the only thing that comes to mind is that the USB charging socket is faulty. It may not charge properly or even have some bad connectors that are damaging the battery.
In any case, Samsung support is the way to go here.
Hope this helps
OMG, im having the same exact problem... the phone is super hot on the back where the sim card is inserted. I did everything as you, still no change, my battery lasts like 7 hours on deep sleep. Guess our phone is broken. super crap.
Anyone knows how to fix this? Is there anyway that my phone has some files from previous custom roms even though used odin to flash samsung original ones?
Had the same problem when my device was only 6 months old, the battery was becoming faulty, got a new battery and problem solved.
I bought a new battery and i still have the same problem... which battery did u get?

An official samsung battery from Amazon, re flash you device with another rom and wipe battery stats.
Did all that, the problem still continues... mega battery drain and the phone is at 44C degrees... is there any tool i can use to diagnose the problem?
Hi snaleman,
You could try BetterBatteryStats, to help diagnose your issue further, there is a paid version on the market (Google Play Store). There is also a thread on this forum, from the dev....hint
I tried winamp for android, ages ago, but had similar issues. (This player might well be your issue.) So I now use "PowerAmp". Neutron MP is cool too.
Also, do you use lippol94's kernel cleaning script. I use this every kernel/ROM change.
Search here for this:
ultimate_kernel_cleaning_script
Hope this info helps your baby.
Hey
U can try to flash a stock rom from sammmobile.com..
Use it for a few days and check...may help u..

Backup your apps with titanium backup or something else.
Make a backup from CWM recovery
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
Restore user apps and not system app
If your problem is not fixed you can restore your CWM backup
Nothing you guys posted worked... battery lasts 11 hours on sleep...
Another problem that im facing is that when im on a phone call, theres is alot of breaks in the other persons voice and sometimes the voice call goes out and i lose all my network signal.
If you are using the Voodoo sound app that may be the cause. I've noticed on my phone that deep sleep no longer works when the voodoo app is installed, most likely the app is holding a partial wake lock and not releasing it.
See if it happens with the app uninstalled or frozen.

You've just made me think of something else that it may be.
Do you have 4 or 5 bars of signal strength?
I've found when in certain areas (very close to "deadspots" in network reception), that if I use another frequency, [eg. 900 & 2100 (for my network), yours may be different] I can get a better signal, also much better battery life, as the phone is not struggling to reach the network.
If you use your dialer to enter this code
*#*#197328640#*#*
Then
[1] DEBUG SCREEN
THEN
[8] PHONE CONTROL
then
[7] NETWORK CONTROL
then
[2] BAND SELECTION
you will then have a selection of frequencies available. The asterisk * will tell you what one(s) is/are active.
"Google" your network service providers frequency bands. I found mine were on a "Wiki" page.
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone is experiencing significantly worse battery life since the update. Today I kept my phone in battery saver mode all day, barely used it, stayed mostly in my apartment, and it's down to 15% after 12 hours. I'm pretty disappointed, as I had read that battery life was supposed to actually be marginally improved with 4.3.
Looking at my battery usage, the Android System percentage seems way up from what it used to be, though I might be making this up. Also, some of the apps I used a bit (Facebook, Instagram, whatever) aren't showing up in the usage stats.
I recall that my battery life wasn't so great for the first couple days after I initially got the phone, so I've been hoping that it just needs to re-adjust to my usage, but that hasn't happened yet. Otherwise, any ideas what I might try to fix this?
I've attached some screenshots of my usage. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
Its not just you, I also noticed worse battery life on 4.3.
Your not alone, use a program to monitor battery use ie gsam monitor.I noticed Google services is waking my phone like 220 times in 12 hours. My battery use is up and I'm getting like 9 hours less time because of it.

Me too! I thought battery life was supposed to be better with this. My phone is getting super hot now and dying fast,
I had similar issues, especially where I work. That place is on a fringe location where it switches 4g and 3g depending on how deep in the store you are. Where I work, I would always have 3g and the phone would get super hot and I'd burn through 50, 60 or more percent battery in 5 hours or so. It was rediculous. This afternoon, I said screw it and did a factory reset (I'm bone stock btw). Tonight, I worked a 7 hour shift and had 4g most of the time (never happened before) and the phone stayed cool to the touch. I lost about 20% battery. Just something you guys might wanna try. I know its a pain in the butt to do, but, at least for me, it seems to have been worth it.
Im running on stock rom, and my battery is much better than before. Maybe it has something to do with the rom?

I'm stock as well. I can try a factory reset, but I'd like to try anything else possible first.

Do you have an app that would probably keep waking up the phone?
Has anyone tried flashing the older radio over the new firmware? I think the signal is weaker with the new radio. Maybe it's switching back and forth between 2g/3g/4g causing high system usage stats. Can anyone try and report back?

I was at home on WiFi for almost the whole day, so I doubt that's the problem, though it's not impossible. I just installed WakeLock Detector a few minutes ago although it's only been running for a sec, so far looks like the Sprint Visual Voicemail app is using CPU wakelock a LOT. Could this be the culprit?

I'd buy that, though idk that it explains everything. I generally got good battery life, but I'm lucky enough to get fairly solid 4g at school and home. Work is the only place where it was iffy, and that is also where I had the worst battery life. The signal is not (in my experience) weaker. The bars just reflect data, not voice now, making it seem weaker. The only other weird thing is that the stability of my wifi connections is better than it was before the reset, and that I get 4g at all at work when previously I had to be at the end of the parking lot to get it.

Maybe. Ive also heard that theres a bug in chrome that also wakes your phone. Keep the app running to find out anyways. Ive disabled my visual voicemail since I don't use it myself.
Ever since update my battery is draining crazy. I just woke up and looked at my phone that was plugged in all night. And it's only 44 % charged. WTF!!

I take VVM off my phone, so its not that, at least in my case. I ran system panel yesterday and the top battery consumer is a process called binder_2. Its always that.
To me, turning off 4g made an absurd difference in battery life. There's a bug with 4g for sure. It never reconnects back to 4g for me once it switches to 3g and the drain is just horrible. I literally get 5 times better battery life out of the phone on CDMA only and truly, LTE is not 5 times better. I prefer consistency and better battery life over speed. So I just turned it off.
I read that up there claiming a factory reset eliminated the battery drain. I'll look into it. I just don't want to do a factory reset cause it's too much work.
Mine better! Signal bars lower both wifi & gsm, but... The true result better, I don't know why? Even no wifi signal bars, Internet still works,

That's very similar to what I had going on. I also had some issues where the phone would tell me x amount of internal storagespace remaining after installing certain apps and the reset (seems to have) fixed that too. If you use an app like Helium backup (no root needed) the reset might be a lot less painful, and I'm almost sure it will help you.
Yeah, I don't think it was actually VVM. I tried to let the WakeLock Detector app run for a while, but it kept causing my phone to restart randomly and I'd lose all the data it had collected, so I just uninstalled it. Looking like a hard reset's in my future. Balls.
No issues with that

Back on ecliptic 4.2.2, superb battery life is back. I'll get back on the 4.3 bandwagon again when we start getting custom kernels to fix what HTC broke.
Hi guys,
After updating from a March nightly to the latest Cyanogenmod nightly I've been experiencing the worst batterylife I have ever had!
I mean, seriously. Charge it up at night, place it by my bed and it's completely dead in the morning!
So it loses 100% battery overnight, with no usage whatsoever
I've tried beanstalk (Also Cyanogenmod based) and experienced the exact same issue. A full wipe and a brand new Cyanogenmod update and it's exactly the same.
I really can't return to stock as I'm making use of a lot of Cyanogenmods features.
The wakelocks are:
As reported by BetterBatteryStats:
Msm_hsic_host
And also a msm_camera wakelock poped up at the top of the list once.
Needless to say "Android OS" tops my battery usage screen with over 90% usage
Is anyone else experiencing the same issues? Anyone know a fix?
I'm basically without a phone right now

I've got the same issue here, but for me it's caused by Google services. At times my battery drains within 4 hours, even if I don't use the phone.
But at some times (most of the times) the phone just acts normal.
Before 4.3 I never had this problem, waiting for 4.4, hope that my problem will be gone. Else I'll just go back to 4.2
Aha! Success!
I have found the issue, I'll post it here if anyone else is having the same issue. Not sure if it'll help you though Dsteppa as your problem seems slightly different to mine
Although I would recommend "freezing" google maps as a starting point. See if that helps! Many android devices suffer from a similar problem, chances of it helping you is about 70%. If you're rooted it's relatively easy to do using apps from the playstore
Msm_hsic_host is used to "mount" the 3g modem as a usb device.. At least that's what I've gathered from various sources. Some phones have a kernel issue which stops the modem from being "unmounted" when data sending/receiving has been completely and thus drains the battery.
Turns out Msm_hsic_host was working as intended. It was actually an app which was apparently steaming data in real time, forcing the 3g modem to remain at full power and preventing the phone from sleeping. The unusual thing is that this app claimed it only consumed less than 3% and didn't even show on Better Battery Stats!
Uninstalling the app instantly solved my battery power issues! So for anyone experiencing similar issues, check for any apps which could be using "realtime" streaming; Such as third party Twitter / Facebook or even Email apps.
Hope this helps!
Hi everyone, pretty much my first post on here (second in all honesty) after reading hundreds of post into flashing/installing a custom ROM. I have always ran stock Samsung but with root, but I wanted more and I was fed up with Samsung and other rogue apps causing wakelocks (kind of became an OCD thing trying to get rid of them). Was determined not to ask for help with so many threads saying the same thing, so I just too the plunge and thought fk it yolo and flashed CM10 onto my device.
Didn't really have a clue what I was doing but got there eventually. Used CWM and downloaded what I thought was the only stable version of CM. I scared myself at first as it was just stuck on the CM boot, did a bit of reading and forgot to do the factory reset and wipe, did that and it all ran smoothly.
After spending hours of fiddling last night, I'm now wondering if it's worth getting CM 11 or should I stick to 10? I barely use anything complicated on my phone, solitaire is about the only game that I play, main thing is just battery life and phone functionality and internet browsing. Also are there any settings that I should be looking into?
I always ran one power guard with stock rom, but after installing it onto CM I found it was causing the phone to never enter deep sleep, uninstalled it and it's pretty good now, has anyone else experienced this? Does CM have pretty good built in battery management or should I look at getting some kind of task killer/battery management software? Couldn't risk leaving it unplugged last night to check battery as my gf needed the alarm for this morning and didn't want to risk it going flat in the night and getting an earfull from her
Thanks in advance for any tips/help.
First of all, you need to know what causes the battery drain in our smart phone no matter what ROM to are in.
They are mainly 3things. 1. Data usage, 2. Screen brightness and 3. GPS. So if you turn off data, turn the brightness down and turn off GPS. You will get pretty good battery performance in all Roms.
Sent from my GT-I9305 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
for the moment stay with stable CM10...in CM11 are a lot of bugs...today it's working nice...tomorrow it's unusable...
no need for 3rd party software for battery saving...all ROM's have ok battery life...but on stock is a noticeable difference.
Thanks for the replies. After leaving the phone idling for most of the morning I've noticed it's not sleeping. BBS is showing KWL is mdm_hsic_pm0
I've been trawling the net trying to figure out what it is, but everything I've read turns into a dead end. In the android battery stats it shows as Android OS. If i reboot the phone it seems to put it back in check, but obviously I don't want to be rebooting my phone all day!
Got very minimal apps running so it's really confuddling me.
Cheers in advance
