Hey guys. I have an Evo LTE right now and thinking of switching to either the One or the S4 only because of the Evo's "LTE" connectivity issues (sometimes have to cycle airplane mode to get 4G in areas which other phones do not have this issue).
Does the One suffer the same fate? This is pretty much the only make it or break it deal. I like to Tether and I travel a lot. The annoyance if cycling airplane mode or even switching to LTE only in ##DATA# does not appease to me when other phones don't have this issue.
Thank you
Yes the HTC one has the same issues with lte as the evo lte. However what I do is I download lte toggle and switch the preferred mode to lte/cdma and it holds the lte signal perfectly fine. I would stick with the HTC one if I were you.

Thank you for the information. In this case honestly I may just keep the phone I have now. Is there a specific "lte toggle" program on the market which works best? I see a few...

I mean, technically I don't have a problem connecting to LTE if I wanted to. For instance, the issue lies when driving around.
If you're in an area where there are some 3G spots and some 4G spots and you're constantly switching towers because your driving, sometimes the LTE Evo wont switch back to 4G. It almost feels as if it's preferring 3G over the 4G. However, once you airplane mode cycle it, it will stay on 4G with no problem.
This situation probably doesn't pertain to someone who is stationary in an area with 4G.
I use lte on off for the HTC thunderbolt. I know with the evo lte if you toggled to lte only it would still go to 3g sometimes. This one doesn't. It's sticks on lte. My brother has an iPhone 5 and it holds lte signal with no problem. I hear the Samsung's are the same. I was expecting the HTC one to be better at this however it isn't. It has to be something to do with how HTC programs the phone on switching to the strongest signal available.

From my experience the HTC One drops LTE around -115dbm.. My wife's S3 and my Note II does not drop LTE until around -130dbm..Ive learned to live with it and run with CDMA only until my area gets more LTE coverage.

Interesting...
While I do think there are multiple reasons behind HTC's LTE connectivity woes. Next time my phone is in a spot which has 4G and is only connected to 3G for whatever reason, I will cycle airplane mode, and if it goes into 4G, observe the signal strength.
Damn and I thought HTC would have fix this issue by now, and I was thinking on moving to the HTC One from my beat up old EVOLTE.
As someone who moved from an EVO LTE to an HTC One, LTE reception is about as poor. I'm tempted to say it is ever so marginally better but that just might be placebo from a snazzy new device. Theoretically, the One should be better but it isn't. Like the EVO LTE, it will give up LTE where other phones will hold on. Anybody who tells you otherwise is wrong.

Different people have different observations. They're not wrong, but the circumstances that they're in are different. Your sample size of one is not enough to conclusively state that this phone is as bad as the EVO LTE. In fact, people at S4GRU are of a very different opinion.
Sorry but the fact is the HTC One has the same LTE capabilities as the HTC EVO 4g LTE. I ran multiple test with the Galaxy S 3 , Note 2 , HTC One and the Evo LTE as well as the I-Phone five compared to the GS3 on a different occasion. The results I always got through many test with signal strength, variations and speeds were always the same results which were that the HTC One and the Evo 4g LTE were always very close to the same as we're the two Samsung phones the Note 2 and the GS3. Then when comparing either Samsung phone with either HTC the Samsung phones were always considerably better with signal strength holding a signal and speed. As an HTC fan I am very disappointed by them and was expecting the HTC One to be much better due to it having higher RF capabilities the the Evo LTE. Building a metal phone and getting the antennas right is no easy feat apparently and HTC has more work to do with there design here. The I-Phone 5 is better than the HTC phones but still got out performed by the plastic Samsung phone every time. I would never by an Apple product but they do a little better with reception even when compared to the Evo which both have plastic areas for the antenna. I hope they HTC can get it right but they really could not afford to Bork this one and it is beyond me as to why they could not do better knowing what was on the line with the HTC One. If it was not for this issue I would have bought the phone instead of a Note 2.

I don't know about the Evo, but I can say that the One refuses to acquire or hold on to 4G in many areas where the S4 has no problem, at least in my region.
Well, I just bit the bullet and purchased a One, and should be arriving sometime this week. I hope I made a good decision to upgrade from my EVO LTE. I figure the phone can't be any worse. Many reviewers give it such a positive rating, and even prefer it over the S4.
Comparing my OG Evo with the Evo LTE's radio strength, my OG Evo was better. This was not a placebo effect as I had different results sending text messages at my old job (heavily indoors). My OG Evo would send a text with little to no problem where my Evo LTE would have a very hard time.
After skimming some forums, I'm hoping to be optimistic about a couple of things if someone with experience would chime in.
1) Does the HTC One have better reception than the Evo LTE? Some people say it's a possibility
2) Androidaholic or someone else that has been able to test. Does the HTC One have better LTE speeds? After skimming some forums, I read this is possible as well.

Is your area "officially lit up" by LTE yet?
Mine is not (NYC area) which is a possibility of where the LTE issues stem from. I did notice when LTE ended up dropping out, I was not able to access the internet beforehand through a web browser. At the same time I would also retry connecting to LTE in "LTE Only" mode, and would have no luck.
Could also be because of how many towers there are, NYC probably having one of the highest tower population in the country. If some towers have LTE and some do not, I could see the phone getting heavily confused. Maybe once more LTE towers light up and it goes official, there would be less problems. Sounds like a good theory, and this statement would probably hold true for many towns with a vast tower density.
yes (kingsport, tenn)
even if it wasn't it does not explain the One being consistently outperformed by the S4 in the same areas in terms of picking up LTE.
I feel like the technology is there for the HTC One just as it was in the Evo LTE for 4G, this is just a matter of the device picking the 3G connection over the 4G due to the radio threshold for HTC being set higher than Samsung in their Galaxy series for instance. Now as to why they set the bar so high for the phone to connect to a 4G tower I have no idea, but side by side comparison would lead one to believe reception is better in other devices for 4G which isn't necessarily true. Keep in mind a phone is a voice device as well as a data device so it is understandably looking for the, and here's the key word, strongest signal. While 4G may be faster, typically, this does not mean its always the most reliable connection. If there is a way to alter that threshold then you would experience much more frequently the 4G indicator in the status bar.

I think a lot of us would like to see is the RSRP (dBm) values of the HTC One sitting next to the EVO and possibly another device like the GS3 or Note 2.
Can someone who has the HTC One in a 4G LTE market find another LTE phone and compare them side by side?
Pretty Please!
Thanks in advance!

Voice for sure, haven't tested any 3G yet.... on WIFi at the house.
heres in my house where its spotty, my daughters ip5 is anywhere between -112-117 in the house and stays on lte. neither the one, lte or my wifes gs3 can hold the lte connection like the ip5 can in this house.
LTE no connection and this was after a airplane mode shuffle
and the One
Just went into a sprint store yesterday and compared the One with my EVO ....I am VERY VERY Disappointed!
The sprint store is right on the edge of a 4G tower...perfect for testing the RF signal. When I walked in the One was connected to 4G without issue, EVO as well. Tried going to the network screen on the one but for some reason it was greyed out and could not access. So I downloaded sensorly so I could see the RSRP values.
Just holding the 2 phones together for a picture and the HTC one drops LTE.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE ....
Is this something that can be fixed or do we have to rely on Sprint and HTC to adjust something?.. I'm dropping from 4G to 3G all the time in places my other LTE phones hold.
Is this a software issue or Hardware?

I just drove one way down a road(4 miles) that has 4G with my phone in the dock and sensory and Google music running. Held 4G the whole way..
Just had to drive down the same road back to the house with the phone on my center console and it was holding 4G again until I touched the phone. When I let it go it connects to 4G again after a minute or so.. Then when I touch it it loses 4G again.. WTF is going on here?
When I say "touch" it, I mean just picking it up in hand. Did this 4 times... This does not happen in areas where it's a strong LTE signal. Only in the outer areas of the LTE signal. But like mentioned before, my other devices hold it fine.

I work in a basement office (IT), and i'm close enough to a tower that my GS3 would still be able to hold on to a weak LTE signal at times (mostly 3G, but sitting on my desk, I could usually cycle airplane mode and get it to hold LTE). It pulled about 2 meg down on LTE the couple times I tested it. I've seen my One grab LTE a couple times, but as soon as it tried to move any data, it would drop back to 3G.
Other than that, both seem to perform pretty much the same to me, but haven't had enough time to test them side by side. I always had to cycle airplane mode to get the GS3 to look for LTE again after dropping to 3G (without having to wait 10 minutes), but with the One, it seems like all you have to do is toggle Mobile Data off and back on and it'll grab LTE. Definite plus there.

Yep, same thing here...I pick up the phone, press the power button to wake, and within seconds data either switches to 3G and/or drops altogether, only to come back after short period. When it comes back it sometimes stays good and sometimes continues to give me issues. I'm thinking software too...but I'm definitely not in a fringe area, at least according to Sprint's coverage map. I'm not going to wait this out and be frustrated...tomorrow morning I'm going to an AT&T store and check out their demo. If it holds a data connection I'm returning the Sprint phone and switching to AT&T. Thankfully, I was at the end of my Verizon contract and within the 14 day remorse period with Sprint.
Oh, and I might add, it did this while I was in the Sprint store and I dismissed it as being indoors or something that would settle. I guess I was so smitten with this sexy ass phone that I too quickly dismissed the issue.
Anyone else having trouble with their LTE reception? I just came from an iPhone 5 and fortunately around me the area is kind of blanketed in LTE but I have yet to get any solid connection on the One where as with my iPhone 5 it would lock on and get great speeds. I saw the LTE on the one pop in a couple times but just for a couple secs and even once long enough to start a Speed Test but then it "lost connection" in the middle of the test. I assume a PRL update is needed or at least I'm hoping its just a PRL update.

This is a software decision.
For most networks, the decision to switch back to 3g would be wise. For most, LTE is blazing fast and 3g is usable. Switching back to 3g on the fringe of an LTE tower is a fine decision on say, Verizon. It also makes sense from a battery standpoint. There is no sense making the higher power LTE radio strain for a signal when there is a perfectly usable 3g one available to a lower power radio.
The problem is with Sprint, with Sprint, you want to hold onto every last drop of LTE because even the faintest, messiest, LTE signal is going to be faster than the 3g.
There will be a software update, I am fairly confident, that will change the values where the the phone gives up on LTE.

I was going to return the phone today but I'll roll the dice in hopes there is an update for this because in those "fringe" areas my Note II holds 4G and its only 2Mbps down and 1Mbps up but it's better than the 3G 28.8k it switches to..
I just hope when the area is covered by more LTE it'll even out..Happy to hear that about Houston which has more coverage that the One holds it's 4G better..This is what im banking on.

I'm smack in the middle of what is supposed to be a fairly saturated LTE area for Sprint (North Dallas, TX) and mine keeps switching between 3G and 4G with total data drops seemingly random and many times throughout the day. What's weird is often times, I'll go to use the phone and the 4G is there and 3 or more bars, and then as soon as I open an app that uses data the connection will drop. It doesn't happen every time, but way more than I can live with. I'm thinking about returning it to Sprint and going with AT&T instead. I just hate to have to hassle with it and pay more for less.

That's helpful...with issues like this, especially at or near launch of a new device, it's always a question of device vs. network vs. software issues. I'm always skeptical that the device is the issue, especially on flagship models. I posted on a Sprint forum and one user said he took his phone back and Sprint swapped it for another HTC One and he's had no issues. Says he thinks it's some type of provisioning issue, which I am not too sure of. But he said he a similar issue with the Evo LTD (I think) and swapped and no more issues. There also was a Sprint rep that chimed in on the thread and advised me that an Vision upgrade had been made in my area yesterday and to update profile and prl and then power down for 3-5 minutes. I followed that advice but I'm still having issues. For reference, I'm in 75240 zip code.

Yeah, I think most of us that have been around a while realize that. I could care less about the bars. Hell, I hardly even talk on the phone. What I need is Data to work, consistently. I don't even care if it's 4G if a decent 3G is available and would provide a consistent connection. Well, yeah, I would prefer it be 4G. The selling point for Sprint right now is their prices and unlimited Data. When you factor in that they are really trying to upgrade their network to compete with the other big 2, and are oriented towards customer concerns at the moment, it makes them appealing. But they got to get the data consistent, especially in large markets like Dallas, TX, or they are just going to keep on churning customers. I just switched to them from Verizon as I was at the end of my contract and was a bit tired of Big Red's bullying, but I have to hand it to them, their network is fantastic. I might be going right back to them, or take a chance on AT&T, which I switched from to Verizon a couple years ago.
I'm new to the Nexus 4. I'm coming from the ATT LG Optimus G which I know is pretty much the same phone. But just wasn't for me. I couldn't get LTE at all with that phone no matter what I did. Apn's, build.prop, radio's, hidden menus, nothing gave me LTE. Development was a little lacky since only a few roms are active. A friend of mine told me to just get a Nexus 4, root it, unlock the bootloader, flash a good rom, flash a .33 radio, change the icon on the to get the 4G LTE and you will get LTE since it has AWS. I had an horrible experience converting the LGOG to Nexus 4. I had so much freaking bugs here and there and lost 50 percent performance of the phone. It was a nightmare.
One downside I did notice about the Nexus 4 that both LGOG and Nexus 4 share the same sizescreen, but the Nexus 4 has on screen soft keys and LGOG has dedicated soft buttons which makes the LGOG a plus one on the screen side since it has more room and the screen looks bigger for some apparent reason.

I don't believe the nexus 4 has a lte chip in it anyways. So even if T-Mobile had lte don't think it picks it up due to the fact the phone has to have a lte chip to connect. I'm pretty sure Google didn't put one in ....unless its there jus not activated. But I don't think so.

In terms of LTE support on ATT, you might you might not get it depending on the coverage area band/s ATT LTE runs in your area. N4 only has AWS 4 band LTE, so if ATT doesn't have that in your area, you can switch to Tmo which does support AWS 4. Check out the ALL LTE & Tmo threads to find out more.

tmobile lte on my nexus 4 in queens, ny. the n4 does have a lte chip, but its not officially there since the lte chip was never approved by the fcc. so google disabled lte in the latest radio. but, with an older radio, you can use lte.

Be sure to reflash the entire stock ROM via fast boot alone (then flash whatever ROM you want). I got an extra 1.5 hours screen on time doing that. No idea why...just a suggestion if you're struggling to get 3 hours screen on time daily (like I was). I now average 4 hours screen on time daily.
I keep going back and forth whether to buy it or not. I have an HTC amaze with cm 10.1 on it. It reboots itself sometimes. But it has a micro SD which doesn't have anything on it. All my apps videos and pictures saved to internal with about 2 GB left I think.
Nexus 4 has lte. Not sure if I get it or just wait out the amaze which battery dies in 5 hours and wait for nexus 5. Or get the nexus 4 and sell the amaze now

I'm with T-Mobile,but Ive been always a fan on AT&T Phones since they always have better mid level phones than T-Mobile. I use to have the ATT Motorola Atrix HD unlocked. I slap my sim card on that and didn't even have to change any APN settings. Immediately picked up LTE. And to answer your question. Yes we have LTE in Phoenix, AZ.

I've been on that thread. I was directed to that thread on the ATT LGOG section. We have LTE in Phoenix,AZ. I should have stated that the phone was unlocked for any sim and me being a T-Mobile customer and all.
Either way for now T-Mobile is kicking ATT's butt in LTE coverage and speeds, but I also heard that ATT are investing over a billion not millions, but billions of dollars into towers and boosting up their LTE speeds.
Not that LTE really matters, but just a nice feature to have and LGOG was not supporting T-Mobile LTE's bands.
Here is a screenshot of my LTE on my Nexus. " Note that the 4G is really LTE on the Nexus 4" I changed the icon and used the LTE settings from the market. Shows that I have LTE on the network type.

Sell the Amaze and get the Nexus 4 and call it a day. Nexus 4 are cheap if you score one on Craigslist. I bought mine for 250 dollars semi new 16gb unlocked already from Craigslist. Seller bought it from Google Play store and she didn't like it. She was a apple fan girl. Only sad part that is I had to drive 20 miles to pick it up. WORTH IT!

oh cool. then you need either the .33 radio or .27. also, theres a build.prop edit you need and an edit for sound during calls(ill link a flashable), and you need to change the phone/radio to lte/gsm.
flash this, it should take care of the build.peop edit and in call sound https://www.box.com/s/h16b3wlrq8op6us7ifsv
Beat you to it already with the .33 radio as you can see on the previous posts that I posted a screenshot of my lte. But the in call sound I shall do but so far I am not experiencing any bugs with the in calls on the .33 radio.
.27 radio doesn't lock so well on the GPS as the .33 does. Wish the .48 had lte and also wish that developers can play with radios but its illegal to even hack radios to begin with.
Now my next issue is. I remember seeing a site or thread somewhere on how to make lte stick even on after booting. I keep having keep changing the prefer network as it sticks to wcdma every boot.

Reading your first post, I thought u were gonna somehow flash Optimus G firmware onto the Nexus 4 to get LTE under ATT.
I'm glad you got it working under T-Mobile LTE.
Just got the One, coming from s2, and love this phone. However I'm on Sprint lte now, and get very spotty coverage. It constantly switches from3g to lte, sometimes no data at all.
Of course this is a sprint issue, but is there a Rom or other ticks that may help get more consistent lte connection?

Not really. I had to lave Sprint after being with them for 11 years due to my phone(s) not getting calls and poor network performance. In Dallas they really messed up big with Network Vision updates. Just my opinion.
Doesnt matter what hardware or software your on if the network is the problem your phone wont make it better.
Untill they get a handle on the system issues its not going to get better.

I regret leaving Tmobile. But hey, I hope that with a Tri-Band LTE enabled phone...things should be better. At least in the near future.

Random question, but are you using a case on your phone? If so, what kind?

It's been going on for me since the beginning of July. It's not your phone, it's the awful network. The network has gotten so bad here, my local new station did a story on it since so many people were complaining. Normally I'm not a fan of stuff like this cause the media tends to exaggerate but in this particular case it's as bad as they say. I can have the tower in site and my phone will dump between X/1X/3G/LTE. Constant dropped calls, cutting in & out, unusable data, etc. I have been with Sprint for over 10 years & the network is literally unusable as it stands. It has been getting better over the last few weeks but it's still awful. I can understand some disruptions in service but this has been an ongoing thing for months with no end in site. Poor planning on Sprint's part. As far as LTE being spotty, until LTE gets turned on 800 it's going to be garbage. HTC one doesn't support LTE over 800 which at the moment doesn't matter since it's not on yet but I'm hoping by the Spring new hardware will be out & LTE on 800.

if your on a sense rom, ##data#, click edit, enter MSL (if you dont have it, sprint should give it to you), you will see LTE settings and LTE scan settings, (dont remember exactly what they're called) Lower both those numbers to like 30 and 5 or something like that, it will scan more often and while connected to LTE should stay connected longer on a weaker signal....there is a thread on it somewhere...
But my HTC ONE has no 4G at all, and I checked the whole area, not just one spot. I tried update my profile(No idea what's that for) and PRL, and nothing helps at all. Also, after update profile, I actually got stuck, lost cell connection for all. But that's a separated issue I'll say. I guess it should be that Sprint faked their coverage( I turned on my ATT phone with Tmobile sim, solid 4G LTE) just to get subscribers, and I'm pretty upset that with all the seemingly good news about Sprint, the real steps are so small, compare to other 4 carriers.
Do you think the phone itself is on the fault? I'm in the Irvine CA area, might be part of the Santa Ana market they are talking about just went online with 4G, which is just not true.

Get close to a known 4g tower (within a few blocks,) check s4gru.com if you don't know where any are. If you still don't get any, there is something wrong with your phone. Sprint 4G on 1900Mhz is pretty fragile and the One drops it pretty easily, unfortunately the S4 actually is better in this regard.

Is it the metal casing that makes the htc one signal not as good as say the s4's? And if so, can a mod be done to help the antenna get better reception?

No idea really, my buddy at work picks up 4g on his S4 several blocks away from where I can in several locations. I'm actually going to flash another radio to see if it helps. May be worth a shot for you too.

The Sprint Coverage Map is an approximation. However, I will agree that a lot of the information is not specifically accurate. For example, the map has shown 4G LTE for my town for over 3 months now. Realistically, I've only been picking up LTE for less then a month now. I don't know what criteria they base the coverage map on (or their underlying intentions) but I have always considered it "somewhat accurate."
The HTC One doesn't help itself either. My wife's Note2 picks up solid LTE in our house; whereas my One can barely hold a 3G reception sitting next to her.

followed the link, interestingly, saw the coverage all along the road, I think it should be one or two person with the app driving through and sent back the signal strength. The real coverage should be wider, cause I don't know any antenna will transmit such a pattern
They have technician that have receivers in their vehicles and as they drive around doing work they collect the signal data.

Sprint really just needs to work on their coverage, they told my mates and I that they would have lte over here by the end of LAST April... nothing. We have 4g signal here, I know this because my old htc evo picked up 4g signals at home, but now that i'm using the one, it has no backwards compatibility with 4g and can only use 4glte, so the unlimited data im paying for is pointless because when i'm home I use wifi since its faster than the 3g i'm picking up (obviously). Really considering the switch to T-mobile when my contract is up.

Well, as demo27vol1 posted the s4gru link, there should be 4G coverage on many parts of the place I am at, that site should be from crowd source, not Sprint. What I found is, if I look at the s4gru's coverage very carefully, I can find one place with much stronger signal, where my phone can get 4G, (I'm not driving around with that map and my phone to try to map the coverage myself, I just went to that place and saw 4G and come back to verify with others' report and found it's relevant.) So I do think the phone is at fault now, means it has some problem with the 4G that it can't get the signal if it's weaker. I guess we should discuss this a lot because I would like everyone having similar experience to be aware of the problem.
It's generally understood at this point that metal phones get worse reception. HTC devices do not have a good track record of having good reception on Sprint as it is (Evo 4G LTE for example).
Most people who have compared the HTC One to an S3/S4 have found that the HTC One gets similar or slightly worse coverage (especially regarding 4G LTE). There are a few who say it's better on the One, but they are in the minority. The largest issue I have noticed on the One is that once it drops the 4G down to 3G, it requires an act of God to make it want to go back to 4G if your 4G signal is only marginal.
This is only a real problem because Sprint's 3G is so bad that a terrible 4G signal is actually faster and more reliable than full bars of 3G in many areas.
I agree, my GF has the GS4 and it holds on to the weak LTE signal for dear life while my One prefers not even to try to get it lol
sometimes i'll 4636 and force it out of spite
