Nook HD (CM 10.+ Question) - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried to find it elsewhere but I can't seem to find if the CM10.1 supports multiple users like the standard Nook HD software does.

I don't know how it works in stock, but we do support multiple users in cm10.1

[Q] New Nook HD+ questions

I have a new Nook HD+, upgraded from the Tablet (which I loved), and so far am enjoying it alot. Got a new SanDisk Ultra 64gb micro SDXC I class 10 memory card for it. Have several hundred B&N proprietary books and several hundred bought from other sites including a few really large medical texts and journals that are fairly graphic intense. Can anyone give me any advise regarding setting this up to get the maximun use (the Nook experience) for this card? I am still learning alot and not real computer savvy so use small words.... I see alot of words like Rooting and CM10 and am not sure what all of this means as of yet. Appreciate any and all help I can get and hope this is the correct forum to post this in.
Thanks
Pookie
If books and reading are your priority, I would get the Play store up and running so you can install other readers. Generally rooting is for more involved application s and android tweaking. Going to cm10 is really more about a native android tablet experience, May not be important to you. See leapinlars thread in development to install the changes and enjoy!
Ps the reason for the play store is the paucity of apps from b&n

If you came from the Nook Tablet running stock software and using B&N proprietary books, you probably want to keep running stock B&N on the HD+. So I would recommend you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and flash the Gapps + Extras zip with my CWM SD. That way you can enjoy your B&N content and use Play Store to get and install more applications to get the most out of the Android experience.

Do I do this to the card on a desktop then mount it to my Nook or mount it to the Nook and download those zips to it there? If I do it to the SD card using the computer and adaptor then, when I mount the card will the Nook want to reformat it or should it just recognize the card/zip? Have a smaller card I may just try it on first to make sure I do it right. If I make an error or have trouble will reformatting the card return it to its initial "state" or would it be ruined and a new one required? I appreciate the information. The instructions seem to be written pretty straight forward so hopefully I wont have any trouble as, previously mentioned, I am somewhat lacking in computer-ese.
Thank you

You do everything on the PC until you are ready to install to the nook. Then you put the card in the nook, boot and a new program will come up automatically. Just follow the directions in the thread.
And you can reuse the card for something else later if you want.

" I have a second zip which adds Gapps/Play Store and enables Unknown Sources along with setting OTA (Over the Air) updates to manual. You can download my NookHD-HDplus-Gapps+Extras-for-stock-rev1.zip here " <--------So this is the only thing I really need to download and install to the SD card then it would appear correct? This is applicable to both HD and HD+ from what I read?
Will give it a try and see what happens
Thank you

You need to download the file and copy it to the card. Then insert the card in the nook and boot. The CWM program will come up and your have to choose install zip from SD. The rest of the directions are in the cyanogenmod recovery section of that thread. Just follow the instructions there. When done you take the card out and boot back to stock and you have Play Store that you can use to install even more apps.

CM10 (Android 4.1) has three graphical interfaces. Phone, tablet and phablet. Phone for small devices, tablet for big devices and phablet for medium devices. The interface is controlled mostly by screen density and size. The tablet has the single combined navigation/status bar at the bottom. The other two have the split controls like you want. When Android went to 4.2 it did away with the tablet interface, so that is what you probably saw on the Nexus 10. To make the HD+ running CM10 move to the split phablet interface you need to raise the lcd density in /system/build.prop. The default for the HD+ is 240. You need to raise that to get to phablet. I don't know the exact figure. I know 300 is phablet. Or you could just switch to CM10.1 (4.2).
And CM10/CM10.1 are the only alternate ROMs for the HD+.

Do you think there will ever be any kernels other than stock on the HD/HD+?
Your wealth of knowledge and helpfullness is awesome; and for that, I thank you.

Yes, will be ... if anyone start work on this ... or current dev's have time for this. HD+ is so new ... and actually little bit specific and not common item.

Scrabble on hd+?

Got cm10.1 emmc working great, but one frustration is I can't get any version of scrabble to work.Scrabble free installs, but then tells me my resolution isn't supported. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I believe there is no work around to this; according to my knowledge. This is an issue with apps and the Nook HD+, and including all other devices with a 1080p HD display or more.
Most Android apps are made to support various different displays, and support up to 720HD. Most apps also support 1080p displays too; but there are those that don't. Scrabble unfortunately seems as one of those, alongside other apps, such as Sims FreePlay, Modern Combat 4, and other games.
Sorry about that, but all the best.
Perhaps someone has a solution to this? I have yet to find one though, and I doubt there is one.

[Q] Does Amazon Video work on CM 10.1?

I would like to put the CM 10.1 ROM on my Kindle Fire, but I don't want to lose Amazon Video. I'm assuming that Amazon Video doesn't work if I put a different ROM on my Fire. Is that assumption correct? Is there a way around this?
Thanks for any insight.
Funny I just installed it yesterday(amazon video)... I'm on the tablet version of cm 10.1, and I installed a version of amazon video I found laying around in the forums that is said to work on other android devices, here's the catch, the device can't be rooted, or so I have heard just like on kindles once you root it the instant video won't work, though k thought that was only prime so I am not completely sure how this affects it. So my answer that needs to be improves on is yes the app will work, as to actually watching the videos I am not sure, you may have to de-root the cm os, which I am not sure if that is a good idea. That's my 2 cents, see if anybody else can be of more use.
Edit: ever time I try to watch a free video I get a "unfortunately this program has stopped working" error
Seems like a stupid move for them to not release an android app for us to use their services, they'd rather we buy a kindle, or in this case not flash our kindle if we want to use it.

My Kindle is already rooted and prime videos work. I have the stock rom with the play store. I want to use cm 10.1, but don't want to lose amazon prime videos. It's disappointing that this is even an issue.

I have CM10.1 on my Kindle now and live abroad so I cannot even use the Amazon video store. I'm curious though - can you access the videos by logging into Amazon in the tablet's browser instead, like you would if you were on a desktop?

You can if you have flash installed and working.
I just discovered that the Kinology ROM allows the use of Amazon Video, plus all the google framework and 3rd party launchers. It's not CM 10.1, but it is better than stock.

[Q] Amazon Stock rom.?

Has anyone considered or know if it is possible to build a rom for this based on the stock kindle fire hd? If so I would be interested in trying.

I read this and thought it was sort of a goofy question at first but now you've got me thinking...
What happens if you install a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 ROM on the Nook HD+? For that matter, has anyone tried a stock Kindle Fire HD 8.9 restore? I know there are boot loader differences but I'm thinking leave the Nook HD+ bootloader or (working) custom recovery intact. Just the ROM itself. They're both OMAP 4 based - granted the Kindle has cameras and the Nook has the micro SD slot but they're pretty close to the same hardware-wise.
I'm intrigued to think I might be able to have my Nook think it's actually a Kindle Fire HD 8.9...
Thoughts?
Browsing around on the Kindle 8.9 Dev forum found this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41301028
It mentions there being some secret data related to Amazon registration, along with serial # of the device. Given that, its probably not nearly as simple as getting a stock KF 8.9 ROM running on the Nook. You'd likely need a backup of the partition that post is referencing too. Also, could be that the Nook is using that area for something.
Very complex mess ... If you did happen to own both devices I guess you might be able to make your Nook spoof being your Kindle. Otherwise your best case I can imagine is your Nook is spoofing being someone else's Kindle which Amazon & that other Kindle's actual owner might not appreciate...

Ive been searching for a way to download Kindle Fire specific apps from the Amazon store to my Nook HD plus running cyanogen. Ive been "purchasing" the free Amazon app of the day for weeks, but a lot of them will only run on the kindle fire. You can purchase the app, but you cant download the kindle specific app unless you have a kindle fire.
As an alternative, has anyone tested downloading a kindle fire specific app, and copying the files over to another android device? Would the app still run?

[Q] Changing modded nook HD+ reported identity?

I'm a complete noob but was easily able to install cyanogenmod 10.1 in my nook HD+ thanks to e.mote's great dummies guide.
My problem is that my modded unit still identifies itself as a Nook HD+ to the app store which then refuses to install some apps because they are incompatible with the Nook HD+. I managed to find an apk of one of the apps I wanted and it installed and worked just fine so the limitation looks bogus at least in that case. Also Amazon refuses to stream movies through the browser - non supported device. Is it possible to change the reported device id so that I'm not limited by Nook HD+ personality restrictions?
cheers lu

You can but most users have found it does not help. Best to just sideload apps or use other stores like Amazon or 1mobile.com.

Agreed - I modified build.prop in the system folder to change the ID. It didn't help my main issue AZ streaming which doesn't seem to like anything except apple and kindle mobile products.
thanks for the input

You need Flash and a browser that supports Flash to use Amazon streaming. You can get the Flash player from an archive page on the Adobe site, the latest one for Android 4.0 (ice Cream Sandwich) works but is not supported on Jelly Bean/CM10.1 & 10.2. For browser, you can use Dolphin Browser once you enable the Flash plugin in its settings.
