[Q] Unroot to get OTA - LG Optimus 4X HD

I rooted my father's O4X HD using the System Backup App method. I then used that app to boot into TWRP. (TWRP isn't permanent). The bootloader is locked. Basically, the phone is stock except it is rooted.
He is running ICS and would like to update to JB. He doesn't care that the device is rooted and he doesn't use the root.
My question is: Can I completely unroot with SuperSu, then update via OTA?
I've done countless hours of research and I cannot get an definite answer. I will be trying to unroot, then applying the OTA update tonight. Are there any risks involved? If I do brick it, how do I reflash the stock ROM?

If I'm wrong then I'm sure someone will correct me, but the JB update isn't avaliable via OTA. It was released to be flashed manually from a PC only.

as far as i know you only can update via lg pc suite to official JB.
or flash it via kdz/dz
but woth lg pc suit you will get 100% the right rom for your country/area.
and if you softbrick it there is a tut in general section how to recover it. but there is a low risk that you brick it. I don't know if the official pc suite needs an unrooted device. just do it via SuperSU should do it.
good luck

Thank you for your response. Let's say I'm talking in general, if I used that method, would it be possible to OTA? I'm worried when the update is released I might brick his phone or I won't be able to update...

actually not. only baseband will be different but i hadn't any connection problems with that i tested. but if the provider of your fathers phone has his own rom there are some preinstalles apps you may find useful.
and if you flash it via pc suite and something goes wrong lg has to reflash the phone for free (warranty, at least as far as i know, im not 100% sure). But unroot it before. just to be sure

If you fully unroot then you should be able to upgrade by OTA to whatever was the latest v10x code (ICS) for his device.
Two useful sites;-
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=abcdefghijklmnopq
Replace 'abcdefghijklmnopq' with the device IMEI to find the latest v20x code that you can get if you want to go down that route.
http://lg-phone-firmware.com/index.php?id_mod=15
List of all firmware available, check what the latest v10.x code for the device was and you'll see if there is any reason to unroot and check OTA.

Rooting will stop official updates?

This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find a proper answer on XDA forums. So here it is:
Will you still be able to download and install official updates in your Note without a hitch even if you've rooted it?
Is voiding the warranty the only problem with rooting?

yes to your questions. getting it OTA is another matter especially if you installed a custom rom.
and of course, you risk bricking your device once you tinker with it. but if you follow the instructions, especially Dr. Ketan's guide, your chances of success goes up dramatically.
That's a relief. If I don't install a custom rom I'll be able to upgrade OTA, right?
And where can I find this Dr Ketan's guide?

Of course you will get OTA / Kies update after Root, but again bad part is that, you will lose Root after OTA/Kies. So If you want to keep your Root intact, you should not update it with OTA/Kies but you can just use as Notice, when you get notice about new update, find it over XDA (this thread is for stock ROMs) n update it using Mobile Odin/ CWM
Chasmodo have shown you exact thread for rooting guide in detail, here ofline guide i have made too, download it from last link on my signature.

So, in case of the OTA update a rooted device will get "unrooted", right? Will that leave the phone in the same state as it would have been in if the rooting never happened, i.e. if you were just doing the OTA updates only all along?..
Yes it will lead to state of unrooted, M not sure but it may leave superuser application icon on drawer(non functioning). If it remains you have to Flash ROM with PC Odin to get rid of this.

I think yes, only not sure about the "flash counter" that I've heard on these forums. It may be an indicator of you voiding your warranty.
EDIT: got my self interested, did a quick search and found more info on this thread. After doing the update and going into download mode you should be able to see if your flash counter is alright

I think some OTA updates leave the rooting intact and one has to specifically "unroot".

Thanks. So I guess things will be the same if one flashes back the original ROM and resets the binary flash counter. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Flash counter raise when you flash custom rom with pc Odin.
Reflash stick rom won't reset it, u need 'jig' to reset it.
Ics support a sw which reset counter without jig.

Ahh no wonder... I am on N7000OZSKK1 and was notified about a 70~mb update both OTA and via Kies to N7000OZSLA2 but no matter what I did it would cause an error during updating. I guess I'll just wait for a "rootable" update (and plus I can't seem to find a changelog either...)

Completely revert to stock without USB connection

My phone is no longer capable of making a USB connection.
Now i want to revert it to stock, i thought i did so but it turns out the stock CWM rom I installed has some mods like root and busybox.
I was wondering if it is possible to flash an older stock rom through cwm and then have the phone auto update to the newest version? I also wonder if OTA updates update the baseband?

Thats what i think will happen, I want to fully revert to stock first though and check that.
You can use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617458
Thou it won't be a clean stock and you probably need the stock kernel for your region to be inside or it can be seen.
If connecting the phone with the battery out, vol down pressed and it still doesn't change into the flash mode you can be sure the usb is dead. (provided the cable is 100% working)
it looks like that might work.
Do you know if Q is older than R and if my phone will auto-update to R?
Status update:
* Manually installed CWM using terminal
* Followed Kag's link and installed that ROM
Rom appears to be fully stock, but I'm not getting an OTA update to v20r.
I need to be on r because q was never officially released, at least not in my country so my phone should not have it.
Any ideas for getting it updated?

That should be due to LG server's load . Guess u could wait for it to appear, eventually, or just create a new 20R.
It looks like it's blocked on the software level and will only let you check once ever X period?

OTA Update

Here's the zip of the OTA that was pushed out. It won't install through either CWM or TWRP, so can someone who's more knowledgeable in these matters make it flashable?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/821854/OTAPkg.zip
And in case it helps, here's the log from CWM from trying to flash it manually:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/821854/recovery.log
And yes, as with any OTA, you run the risk of losing root, etc. But for me, I really don't care. I've even tried pushing the included stock recovery, but it doesn't work like this. You get a phone with an exclamation point over it (I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about) when you try to boot into that recovery. A quick push of TWRP back onto the phone fixed that error, but I still can't flash the update, obviously. Anyone want to take a crack at it?
Thanks to nuclear_eclipse for getting this and the log for us!

That symbol just means that it doesn't know what file to use for the update; this is part of what get's communicated somehow from the OS to the recovery during reboot, but I'm not familiar enough with the way recoveries work to know how to trigger that myself. I would assume this is a similar mechanism to how ROM Manager et al can tell CWM/TWRP what to flash.

That makes total sense. I guess it's not automatically checking the folder that Software Update puts it in. I've got another 22 hours until I can get Software Update to check again. I'll push the stock recovery before I do that, unless someone makes this flashable through TWRP or CWM before then.
In my stock Rom thread there are new files up. They are the ota roms. So if you are running stock, download the odex one ending in 1.08 and flash in recovery, no need to wipe data. Then pull boot.img and fastboot flash it. You now have the ota software. I will post instructions to upgrade the firmware that came with the ota

Yep, the Droid Utility is a great tool for this phone.
If you're new to this, maybe a little explanation may be helpful..
the Droid Utility is a collection of scripts or tools you can run one after the other. For your purpose, rooting the Droid4, you only would use option 3 - and if you want to run a custom rom on this tool, also option 4. (Google "How to Safestrap" for more info on that)
1) and 2) are if you want to flash your phone back to stock.
So download the utility, extract it.
Make sure you have the drivers installed (if you can connect to your phone as a mass storage device you should be ok)
Click on the run.bat file, choose option 3 and follow the onscreen instructions.

??? What are you trying to get back to? droid utility can flash any firmware file you want - or use RSD lite to flash stock firmware..
But where are you and what are you trying to accomplish and why?
Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. I was rooted, took the latest OTA, restored root with voodoo. Now I just want to unroot and wipe it. Current
System 98.72.189.xt894 , Android 4.1.2, no custom Rom.
So I guess if I use option #1(I think) on droid utility, that should do what I need? Or is there something else I need to do as well since I took the recent ota?

No- just choose option #1. The last OTA doesn't make a difference one way or the other...
well, my problem is that the latest update (97.82.189) would fail, so i unrooted with supersu, flashed stock with droid4 utility then installed the update without fail, now i cannot re-root the phone, ive follow all instructions of clearing smartactions cache and data before attempting, phone is in debug and ive tried on both mtp and camera usb modes several times with no luck, script seems to run through as it should but root never takes, im thinking i should have never used supersu to unroot and should have just flashed stock and tried the update, would really suck if i cannot get root back
