This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find a proper answer on XDA forums. So here it is:
Will you still be able to download and install official updates in your Note without a hitch even if you've rooted it?
Is voiding the warranty the only problem with rooting?

yes to your questions. getting it OTA is another matter especially if you installed a custom rom.
and of course, you risk bricking your device once you tinker with it. but if you follow the instructions, especially Dr. Ketan's guide, your chances of success goes up dramatically.
That's a relief. If I don't install a custom rom I'll be able to upgrade OTA, right?
And where can I find this Dr Ketan's guide?

Of course you will get OTA / Kies update after Root, but again bad part is that, you will lose Root after OTA/Kies. So If you want to keep your Root intact, you should not update it with OTA/Kies but you can just use as Notice, when you get notice about new update, find it over XDA (this thread is for stock ROMs) n update it using Mobile Odin/ CWM
Chasmodo have shown you exact thread for rooting guide in detail, here ofline guide i have made too, download it from last link on my signature.

So, in case of the OTA update a rooted device will get "unrooted", right? Will that leave the phone in the same state as it would have been in if the rooting never happened, i.e. if you were just doing the OTA updates only all along?..
Yes it will lead to state of unrooted, M not sure but it may leave superuser application icon on drawer(non functioning). If it remains you have to Flash ROM with PC Odin to get rid of this.

I think yes, only not sure about the "flash counter" that I've heard on these forums. It may be an indicator of you voiding your warranty.
EDIT: got my self interested, did a quick search and found more info on this thread. After doing the update and going into download mode you should be able to see if your flash counter is alright

I think some OTA updates leave the rooting intact and one has to specifically "unroot".

Thanks. So I guess things will be the same if one flashes back the original ROM and resets the binary flash counter. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Flash counter raise when you flash custom rom with pc Odin.
Reflash stick rom won't reset it, u need 'jig' to reset it.
Ics support a sw which reset counter without jig.

Ahh no wonder... I am on N7000OZSKK1 and was notified about a 70~mb update both OTA and via Kies to N7000OZSLA2 but no matter what I did it would cause an error during updating. I guess I'll just wait for a "rootable" update (and plus I can't seem to find a changelog either...)

Will i be able to unroot in a later date while still keeping the same stock ROM? Also, does unrooting puts the phone back under warranty or once rooted the warranty is voided permanently?
You can regain warranty by putting back Stock ROM anytime (you have to just flash Stock ROM with PC Odin)

does a nandroid backup saves the kernel and modem and everything? or just the ROM?

Not quite, as most flash methods would increase the binary counter.
Re-flashing a stock kernel would only get rid of the yellow triangle.
There are ways to reset the binary counter, but he would need to make sure that his binary is at 0 (NO) to be 100% sure he will get warranty service

My answer was in reply to warranty back for rooted device, not raised counter.
N correct first line not most of method raise count. It is-
Any custom rom/kernel if flashed with pc odin that only raise counter.

To get warranty just flash back to a stock ROM it.wont raise the flashing count because it's an official rom

My apologies- I just wanted to point that out.
Furthermore, of course flashing a stock kernel would not raise the counter and get rid of the yellow triangle, but if they hypothetically checked the binary counter and it was not at NO, then they could refuse warranty coverage for service AFAIK. Re-flashing a stock kernel will not reset the binary counter if it is above 0
I am not disagree, you are right. raised counter will not solved by flashing stock rom. That needs jig i know.
But i want to convey that your reply to my quote was misleading.
Actually someone have asked me, does unrooting can regain waranty? Or rooting voids my warranty permanently?
For that i said just reflashing stock rom will unroot n warranty will b regained.
That case there was not a question of raised counter.
Regards.

Hello there, I'm still new to this forum but I did read quite alot before I created an account.
So I want to root my phone and flash a (probably still GB) rom on it, but I have some questions first. I did read the guide for rooting.
- First, if I root does the warranty expire? I know there's an unrooting method, but just to be sure.
- I have a subscription by a provider, so my phone is not unlocked. I'm still able to root?
- My kernel version is XXLA6. In the topic for rooting it says this a non rootable kernel, I don't understand. Can I root my phone?
- If so, what method should I use? There are a couple of methods in the rooting topic, but I'm not quite sure which one I need.
- Should I perform a backup? And if so, what is the best way.
Looking forward to read the answers to these questions so that I can (hopefully) begin!

1. yes, your warrenty wil be void. but if you use the "zergRush Exploit" samsung repair will never see you were once rooted, if you unroot it before sending it in.
2. yes
3. Use ODIN to flash a rootable ROM through the "zergRush Exploit". (so you need to download a ROm and ODIN first)
4. download KJ4+ODIN --> use zergRush Exploit (explained in the thread)
5. best method is a "nandroid backup", but you can only do this when you're already rooted (hehe). This is especially handy when you're going to flash ROM's kernels or whatever. (It's like an image of the exact state your phone is in).

At answer 4: what's KJ4? I understand I should use the zegrRush Exploit method, so I guess I could just follow each step on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXfDFzQNWxE&feature=youtu.be?
edit: and if so, I should enable the usb debugging mode I guess?
Another question: will I be able to normally update to ICS with my rooted (and with custom rom) phone when it comes out?
Thanks!!
U need to downgrade first to get device rooted.
Kj4 is rootable rom, so first download this(or any older rom)

I do have another question: let's say I want to flash a custom rom on my note, but with a different kernel (franco's for example), how does that work?
Flash the ROM first (because these include kernels). And just flash the kernel on top of that, just make sure you clear the caches before flashing (regular cache and dalvik, dalvik cache is under the 'advanced' tab).
Good day! First time poster and total android noob here \
Anyway, I had my under warranty note updated to ICS more than a month ago. Under gingerbread, everything was running fine and even after updating to 4.0.1, it was still running good. My problem started when I updated to 4.0.3. The phone locked my sim out and was asking for a network unlock code so my phone being under warranty, I went to the service center to have it checked.
The staff told me they needed to reformat the OS since I upgraded OTA. I backed all my data then I sent it to them. They formatted the OS and informed me that the problem still persisted. So they told me that they would change the board since formatting it did not solve the problem. A few days later, the board arrived and they replaced it. I got the unit back but noticed the camera would not focus. So I sent it back and I was told they needed ti replace the camera since it was faulty. I was hesitant at first as to why the camera would suddenly die when they only replaced the board. But it was fine with me and since it was still free, I sent it back to them anyway.
It was running fine when I got the phone back but since then, I always got a notification telling me a software update is available even when they installed 4.0.4 (and even before Jellybean update was aanounced). I tried to update OTA again but received an error report that it could not update due to network problem or to try updating via Kies.
I plugged my note via the computer to load Kies and received an error report that my device does not support upgrading via Kies. I never got that error before they replaced my board. I googled and found that maybe the board they replaced is not supported in my country or something.
Can anyone help me out? All I want is a clean install (if possible) with all software running good. I was always tempted to have my phone rooted to solve all the problems but opted not to since I don't want to void my warranty. I read somewhere that you could load an official ROM to reinstall your OS without voiding the warranty. And as you know, I am hesitant on asking the service center's help again (unless it is a hardware problem :fingers-crossed

I don't know of any backup app without having your phone rooted. But eh, new is always better
if u install ics over gb or ics. it will not as they are non wipe. but custom rom need a factory wipe to be done so they will.

titanium backup is 1 of the best

I rooted my father's O4X HD using the System Backup App method. I then used that app to boot into TWRP. (TWRP isn't permanent). The bootloader is locked. Basically, the phone is stock except it is rooted.
He is running ICS and would like to update to JB. He doesn't care that the device is rooted and he doesn't use the root.
My question is: Can I completely unroot with SuperSu, then update via OTA?
I've done countless hours of research and I cannot get an definite answer. I will be trying to unroot, then applying the OTA update tonight. Are there any risks involved? If I do brick it, how do I reflash the stock ROM?

He is running ICS and would like to update to JB. He doesn't care that the device is rooted and he doesn't use the root.
My question is: Can I completely unroot with SuperSu, then update via OTA?
I've done countless hours of research and I cannot get an definite answer. I will be trying to unroot, then applying the OTA update tonight. Are there any risks involved? If I do brick it, how do I reflash the stock ROM?

If I'm wrong then I'm sure someone will correct me, but the JB update isn't avaliable via OTA. It was released to be flashed manually from a PC only.
as far as i know you only can update via lg pc suite to official JB.
or flash it via kdz/dz
but woth lg pc suit you will get 100% the right rom for your country/area.
and if you softbrick it there is a tut in general section how to recover it. but there is a low risk that you brick it. I don't know if the official pc suite needs an unrooted device. just do it via SuperSU should do it.
good luck

Thank you for your response. Let's say I'm talking in general, if I used that method, would it be possible to OTA? I'm worried when the update is released I might brick his phone or I won't be able to update...

Does it matter which region/country I flash from?

actually not. only baseband will be different but i hadn't any connection problems with that i tested. but if the provider of your fathers phone has his own rom there are some preinstalles apps you may find useful.
and if you flash it via pc suite and something goes wrong lg has to reflash the phone for free (warranty, at least as far as i know, im not 100% sure). But unroot it before. just to be sure

If you fully unroot then you should be able to upgrade by OTA to whatever was the latest v10x code (ICS) for his device.
Two useful sites;-
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=abcdefghijklmnopq
Replace 'abcdefghijklmnopq' with the device IMEI to find the latest v20x code that you can get if you want to go down that route.
http://lg-phone-firmware.com/index.php?id_mod=15
List of all firmware available, check what the latest v10.x code for the device was and you'll see if there is any reason to unroot and check OTA.
My phone keeps failing to update. I keep getting "Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem.Try software update via settings > Software Update > Update or try using PC Kies later". I read all the solutions and ended up just resetting my phone to factory settings and I am still getting the same message. I am don't know what to do at this point. Any ideas?

I do not really believe this. Install a JB stock release for your region with PC Odin. Or install PhilZ kernel and then try one of the available Custom Roms.
If I believe you: so you read all solutions before and I d not need to give you the links to the sticky tutorials related to this.
Good luck.

OK, I am sorry, I guess I didn't see all the solutions yet. Yes, I need links. I don't know how to install JB stock release. I don't know what PC Odin means. I basically read that I must have rooted my device and now I can't install updates and that if I wipe the device it will be able to install firmware update. I am puzzled why factory reset doesn't fix the problem but please point me to the links where I can learn how to install JB stock release and whatever PC Odin thing I need. Thank you
Sorry, but no links. You are a member since Nov 2011. You should know about the simple way of searching for sticky threads in a forum already. If you are too lazy to do this, then you should stop thinking about manual updates and custom roms, kernels etc.
But you could continue asking for spoon-feeding. There might be other members here that aren't tired of this way of being a part of XDA and they will post the links for you.

I am sorry I don't understand what a custom rom is and I don't want any. I don't want to do any manual updates. I just want update my phone as my phone keeps.telling me there is a firmware update. I searched for the error message and came back empty handed. The suggestions I found said to reset the phone but it didn't help me. You talked.about some things that I have never heard of so I asked for clarification. Is it wrong to ask? Yes I have been a member zince 2011 when I got my phone. I asked some questions back then and nothing since. It does not mean I am an expert in find out about some roms. I.just wanto have the the latest update.released by Samsung on my Samsung phone.
To putnit in a simple way. Why not just bring your phone to a customer service center and let them update for you?
Since you are not sure what those terms means and your phone seems to be in stock version. Samsung will update for you.

There is no Samsung Customer Center in Massachusetts. What do I do in this case?
Call up Samsung and ask them?

So I called them and they don't have a center in the area that I can go to and even if they did he wasn't sure if they could update my international phone.
Does anyone know what the problem is?

Brand new phone. I have not done anything to it. Was using it as is. Always got updates with no problem until a few days ago. I just want to get an official update that Samsung released.

first, try Kies.
if that fails try again.
Then we check efs
try dial *#06# and check if imei is the one you expect, it should not be 00049.
Then dial *#272*yourimeihere# and check if csc is selected. That should be the one of your phone. Maybe something went wrong with previous updates there. If you select the original your phone came with then a factory reset wil occur. be carefull, phones have bricked that way.
Now another ingredient for succesful updating is pcode, this can be found via a another code. forgot which one. Getting that back is to much work, unless you have efs backup of working condition. Which nobody has usually.
I would recommend going back via dr ketans pc odin way to latest rom for the csc found in previoius steps and in a clean way. Or earliest and update back up. Before you do that backup efs Search how.

I already tried Kies and before I reset the phone to factory settings it gave me an error message in Korean. Then I reset the phpne and now Kies says that I am on the latest firmware, but I am not.
IMEI is not 00049
The right CSC is selected.
The previous updates ran just fine.
Iam having the same exact problem! "Failed to update firmeware due to network or server error. Please try again later or try using kies" My phone is not rooted. What could be the problem? Earlier updates were just fine! Please help, I want to update it to jellybean 4.3 !

He has a note 2. It has official 4.3.
Why don't you try a factory reset by Settings>backup&reset>factory data reset! maybe this solved the issue, and try to be on a fast and secured data connection!, 3G will work! try this if it doesn't work then more solutions by my side!
