Hello there, I'm still new to this forum but I did read quite alot before I created an account.
So I want to root my phone and flash a (probably still GB) rom on it, but I have some questions first. I did read the guide for rooting.
- First, if I root does the warranty expire? I know there's an unrooting method, but just to be sure.
- I have a subscription by a provider, so my phone is not unlocked. I'm still able to root?
- My kernel version is XXLA6. In the topic for rooting it says this a non rootable kernel, I don't understand. Can I root my phone?
- If so, what method should I use? There are a couple of methods in the rooting topic, but I'm not quite sure which one I need.
- Should I perform a backup? And if so, what is the best way.
Looking forward to read the answers to these questions so that I can (hopefully) begin!

1. yes, your warrenty wil be void. but if you use the "zergRush Exploit" samsung repair will never see you were once rooted, if you unroot it before sending it in.
2. yes
3. Use ODIN to flash a rootable ROM through the "zergRush Exploit". (so you need to download a ROm and ODIN first)
4. download KJ4+ODIN --> use zergRush Exploit (explained in the thread)
5. best method is a "nandroid backup", but you can only do this when you're already rooted (hehe). This is especially handy when you're going to flash ROM's kernels or whatever. (It's like an image of the exact state your phone is in).

Thanks for the answers!!
At answer 4: what's KJ4? I understand I should use the zegrRush Exploit method, so I guess I could just follow each step on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXfDFzQNWxE&feature=youtu.be?
edit: and if so, I should enable the usb debugging mode I guess?
Another question: will I be able to normally update to ICS with my rooted (and with custom rom) phone when it comes out?
Thanks!!
U need to downgrade first to get device rooted.
Kj4 is rootable rom, so first download this(or any older rom)

don't know about this guide... but if you download this official dutch ROM: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/136171858/ca6b62f/N7000XXKKA_N7000XENKK1_XEN.zip.html
And install it through ODIN (select as PDA, and don't check any other box)+put phone in download mode by holding power+home+volumedownbutton): http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=815370&stc=1&d=1323799721 (Password : samfirmware.com)
You'll have a rootable stock dutch ROM -----> root it using the "zegrRush Exploit method" (so you won't lose your warranty).
When you've managed that, check back here!

Alright thanks, will try that first!!
I downloaded everything and ready to begin, but I read somewhere that I need Kies for detecting the drivers or something. Is this necessary? Kies doesn't work on my pc, but my pc does recognize my phone without any problems.
If Kies is necessary I'll have to do this at my parents house lol.

Rooting went superb!! Also did a titanium backup + nandorid backup to my sd card. So good to go for flashing custom roms! I'm so thankful!! You guys are great.
I do have another question: let's say I want to flash a custom rom on my note, but with a different kernel (franco's for example), how does that work?
Flash the ROM first (because these include kernels). And just flash the kernel on top of that, just make sure you clear the caches before flashing (regular cache and dalvik, dalvik cache is under the 'advanced' tab).

Step by step what I did:
I rooted my tab via this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367
I then installed bootstrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981307), and after going through the steps and restarting I can't get into recovery or anything. It just sits at the logo.
How do I just reset it to factory?
If I completly broke this I think I'm going to puke... Can somebody give me a little bit of hope or help?

1st question .. is your tab unlock ?
2nd if not , means you gonna reflash your stock rom again via odin
3th . maybe you can use P1_add_hidden.pit via odin and press start and maybe its work , but 80% its work if didn't work u have to go for step 2

Obihannm, I did the same yesterday.
You need the original stock firmware for your galaxy and Odin for flash it again.
Look for sam firmware in the google to grab your stock kernel, tools and guides for recovery.
With luck and patience, it is possible ressurrect your tab, but It will back unrooted and maybe you get a locked bootloader.
Just go here and follow attached guide guide.
Thanks guys, I will be up late trying this for sure. I noticed that this probably should live within the QA area not Genreal, so if a Mod or Admin wants to move it, please do.

OK, a few deep breaths and some "reading" (a new concept for me it seems) later I think I have a bit of a better understanding.
So reading through the overcome guide and a few other threads I think my issue is I must have had a protected bootloader, and that bootstrap program would have frigid that up (there probably was a warning if I slowed down). So that means my issue is my bootloader... Am I correct thus far?
If this is true, does this mean my current rom is actually fine, and fixing my bootloader is my #1 goal?
From there I can insteall the overcome rom, the normal gingerbread rom, or go back to stock? As I see it overcome/gingerbread is the best option.
Just install the stock rom, once back to normal if you have a locked bootloader patch it
All that you need in one handy page

I read through the guide you linked to as well as this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078622). You suggest I only need to access "download" mode, which I discovered how to do last night. Should Heimdall or other applications be able to see my device via download mode? Or is there a step I am missing.
As well I noticed in the guide you linked me it references patching the bootloader if it is locked, do I need to patch my bootloader or replace it completely as it seems to be broken?
I want to learn this stuff, this I read, and now I am asking. Again all help is appreciated.
Heimdall doesn't seem to do anything at all. I followed the guides as I best understood, and when it came time to hit the start button it instantly said completed with no actual results...
Any ideas?
a coworker was nice enough to help me out, using the stock rom with an unlocked bootloader he was able to bring it back for me. I'm now running froyo, rooted, and a unlocked boot loader so I should have no issues putting overcome on it.

you need to use jig, if you have raised binary counter, back to stock ROM, can't solve it.
BTW, use winrar/7zip to extract file.

Using a jig is unfortunately the only way to reset your Samsung Note into a clean (warranty friendly) status. To be honest... it is some kind of "blind flight" because after loading the old ("wrong") bootloader via ODIN your device will show nothing after the reboot. Could be a little be scary for some people... but it works ;-)

I downloaded this firmware from your post:

2. What is the best way to root it again?

I'd like to speed up my Note. Kinda sluggish at stock. Even iPhones are smoother. What is Rocket Rom & Litening Rom? Is it safe? Which is better? or are there any better ones out there?
Just before unrooting I was using AbyssNote2.3, 1.703GHz, alot of heating & no difference that it was earlier. Netchip was smoother.
Thanks
Zergrush n CF root using same exploit to Root. CF root have extra benifit that it pushes CWM along with Root.
Really I never used any custom ROM till day. N it depend on own choice n requirement. You can find details n review of other on corresponding ROM thread, I can't comment much on it.
Hi there
Yes I know there are articles about this (damn long articles with strange terms). And I have read through a lot posts about how to root Samsung Galaxy Note - there seems to be 1001 ways to do it but none of them worked on my model KL3 (purchased from Starhub in Singapore)
-> Tried one-click root method - doesnt work anymore for KL3
-> Tried odin method, can't find the place to download the revised ROM (just wondering why will the author still post the URL that is invalid?)
So please anyone out there, if you have done any successful root on KL3, please let me know how you did it.
I am willing to pay you some $$ to get the no-nonsense answer - I have wasted 1 day digging around and I don't want to waste more time.

First downgrade your firmware, then Root it. after applying Root, you can back to Singapore KL3 or watever new ROM you desire, by using CWM or Mobile Odin
Hi sorry to hijack yr thread OP,but i am also from Singapore.i bought a set from singtel.
my firmware are as follow:
PDA:N7000DXKL3
PHONE:N7000DXKL2
CSC:N7000OLBKL2
Baseband:N7000DXKL2
Kernel:2.6.35.7-N7000DXKL3-CL825081 [email protected]#2
i am confused on which one to look at as both pda and phone has different KL version..so which one should i be looking at for rooting purposes and can my current fw be rooted directly?
Look at kernel version. You are on KL3.
Follow dr.ketan's post above.
thanks for replies.

Actually xxkl3 was released early that was direct rootable, but some newer version released under kl3 are not rootable
Actuallt kl* are non rootable, except some early kl3. So you shud try to root it directly, if not success you should consider it as non rootable.

I can tell u, i don't care which version i am.
Normally i will just download the newest version from www.sammobile.com and flash through odin, and on ICS, if i loose my root, i will use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794. To get my root back. Easy and fast.

Will you still be able to download and install official updates in your Note without a hitch even if you've rooted it?
Is voiding the warranty the only problem with rooting?

yes to your questions. getting it OTA is another matter especially if you installed a custom rom.
and of course, you risk bricking your device once you tinker with it. but if you follow the instructions, especially Dr. Ketan's guide, your chances of success goes up dramatically.
That's a relief. If I don't install a custom rom I'll be able to upgrade OTA, right?
And where can I find this Dr Ketan's guide?

Of course you will get OTA / Kies update after Root, but again bad part is that, you will lose Root after OTA/Kies. So If you want to keep your Root intact, you should not update it with OTA/Kies but you can just use as Notice, when you get notice about new update, find it over XDA (this thread is for stock ROMs) n update it using Mobile Odin/ CWM

So, in case of the OTA update a rooted device will get "unrooted", right? Will that leave the phone in the same state as it would have been in if the rooting never happened, i.e. if you were just doing the OTA updates only all along?..
Yes it will lead to state of unrooted, M not sure but it may leave superuser application icon on drawer(non functioning). If it remains you have to Flash ROM with PC Odin to get rid of this.

I think yes, only not sure about the "flash counter" that I've heard on these forums. It may be an indicator of you voiding your warranty.
EDIT: got my self interested, did a quick search and found more info on this thread. After doing the update and going into download mode you should be able to see if your flash counter is alright

Thanks. So I guess things will be the same if one flashes back the original ROM and resets the binary flash counter. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Flash counter raise when you flash custom rom with pc Odin.
Reflash stick rom won't reset it, u need 'jig' to reset it.

Ahh no wonder... I am on N7000OZSKK1 and was notified about a 70~mb update both OTA and via Kies to N7000OZSLA2 but no matter what I did it would cause an error during updating. I guess I'll just wait for a "rootable" update (and plus I can't seem to find a changelog either...)
If I am not the most ignorant XDAdevelopers member I am certainly in the top 10. That said here is my dilemma.
Equipment:
* Phone: Sony Xperia Z1
* Model: C6906
* Android Version: 4.3
* Build: 14.2.A.0.209
Goals:
* I would like root access (SuperSU).
* I don't want ClockWork Mod Manager (permanently, if I need to use it at some point).
* I DON'T want a custom ROM (I want to keep the stock firmware).
* Xposed Framework provide all the functionality I need.
* IF boot loader unlocking is necessary I would like to be able to relock the boot loader.
From my readings KINGO would appear to be amongst the simplest root tools, but from the KINGO site it does not appear to support the Z1. On the other hand, I have read posts where users say they have used KINGO on this phone.
Is a full nandroid backup possible/necessary given the above prior to making changes?
As I already feel like the South end of a horse facing North, please be gentle with any comments.
Thanks in advance.

You want a full nandroid backup but no recovery? I suggest you install a recovery and leave it there. It wont make any difference to you
First, if all you want is root them do this
1) Downgrade to 4.2 FW ending in .534
2) Install dual recovery from the cross development thread
3) Flash SuperSU.zip from chainfire
4) Upgrade to your chosen ROM, there are several stock based ones in the development section.
No need to unlock your bootloader, you will be rooted and your choice of ROM with the ability to use xposed

Look carefully my friend and the truth will appear to you clearly... It is supported as you seed at this line :
How to update to 14.3.A.0.681:
Files:
For C6906: Download C6906_14.3.A.0.681.flashable.zip (Bittorrent: 956MB) and C6906_14.3.A.0.681_Stripped.ftf (21MB)
You don't heave to Unlock Bootloader to get Root. I don't know what is ClockWork Mod Manager? For sure you will need a recovery, permanently like TWRP or Philz to make Update with Pre-Rooted Androids.
Download the FTF .534 Rogers for your model form FTF Collection in general Section, flash it with Flashtool v0.9.15, when you are on 4.2.2 FW .534 Root it with Bin4ry Method (from PC, there is not simplest way), Install SuperSU from Play Store or Flash the .zip file (you will find the link on How Root 4.3 or 4.4), then Instal XZDualRecovery (from PC, there is not simplest way), now you are ready to update to your favorite Android 4.3 or 4.4 and follow the instructions of "Hot to" in the specific thread.

CMW recovery-Clock Work Mod recovery
Its the one Philz is based on...
You do not need it permanently, you can delete it and reinstall it when you want it, but I don't see the point in that, just leave it there to be used as when is needed.
BTW, I am not soo fast in typing so I am the last one!!

Of curse. Nothing to say about that. :good:
I was hoping to avoid what appears to me major modifications like flashing firmware (next phone is a nexus).
Another question, if I root only will a factory restore remove root?
Thanks to all the help. Off to work now, looking forward to reading more comments if any more are offered.
fiiish
yes, flashing stock FTF will revert your phone back to a factory state
This process of rooting will take about 10 minutes once you have everything downloaded, its not difficult.

QualQuek;
I am lost. There does not appear to be a single set of directions that I can follow. Go to this site to get this, except that, then go here or there. I just can't get my head around what I can now see are only a few steps.
I have downloaded:
- C69XX_14.3.A.0.681.patch.zip
- C6906_14.3.A.0.681.flashable.zip
- flashtool-0.9.15.0-windows.exe
If the offer still holds for help with step-by-step I will gratefully accept your help!!!
Thanks and regards.

First you need the requirement
Download the 534 firmware of your country here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
Install XZDualRecovery here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
Now you can follow the instructions of NUT :
Put 'C69XX_14.3.A.0.681.flashable.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C69XX_14.3.A.0.681_Stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Start your phone in recovery mode (boot the phone and after the 2 vibrations push vol down)
Create a backup of your phone in TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard' (the internal storage!);
Flash 'C69XX_14.3.A.0.681.flashable.zip' in TWRP (select install and select your file)
NOTE: do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C69XX_14.3.A.0.681_Stripped.ftf' using flashtool;
