[Q] Screen Enhancement tools? - LG Optimus 4X HD

I've been looking up and down the forums and would like to ask here just in-case someone knows...
The LG Optimus 4X, has a beautifully sharp screen with fantastic viewing angles. The only true let down is the colors/Vibrancy of the screen. Does anyone know of a tool or a kernel we could use to adjust the screen profile to our tastes. I would like the colors bulging out of the screen.
I have used Advanced Color & Gamma Control from the Play store but have had no luck. The same can be said for Screen Adjuster and Filter Your Screen. I haven't yet tried the Eternity kernel, as it really isn't up-to scratch for me just yet.
Any Suggestions guys? :good:

i9000 screen problem

Hi all,
Got the Galaxy S for a month, pretty happy with it. Yesterday, the brightness suddenly gone up. The worst part is the display lost the gradient scaling and it is replaced by colour bands!
Apps like the stock video player for example. Before the video is played, you can see the grey control bar at the bottom covers by a lot of colour bands. The colour of the movie is all washed out as if you were playing it in 8 bit colour mode. Where the same avi played okay before, crystal clear and colour was rich.
Same thing with the charging screen while the phone is off. You can see the colour bands on the grey area of the shadow of the green battery. Just wondering if anyone has the same problem?
Cheers!
Factory reset :d
Tried all that full factory wipe, data reset, flash to different rom. Nothing works
Then your device's probably faulty. replace it.
Pretty certain it is. I took a screenshot of the video player and it looks fine but on the screen, you can still see those colour bands meters away.
I guess this indicates the LCD is faulty.

The galaxy s has no LCD its LED
Ive noticed when you slide down that tray from the top, when closing it mine has MANY TIMES switched to full brightness. But simply tapping the brightness button on the multi widget thingy makes it go back to how I want.

Thats because you can adjust the brightness by sliding your finger accross the notification bar.... doesnt work if you have auto brightness ticked...

Hi I have the exact same problem! But I didn't notice it before now wen I saw this thread. But all the colours are just fine when I play a vid, it's just the grey controlbar that is by many stripes of different colours, looks like 8bit colour. But when the vid starts playing its just fine, because it gets transparent. Should I get this phone changed, have just had it a couple of weeks.

Hi Radat,
I posted more info in the other forum including some screenshots. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1520586
Hope yours okay. I am going to call Samsung tomorrow.
romhunter,
yup, saw the screenshots, looks like quantization problem i.e. that colours are using fewer bits than normal. For example, RGB screen might use 24 bits per pixel, 8 bits per r/g/b colour, the screenshots seem to suggest only 5 or 6 bits per colour.
Hopefully this is just a software glitch, though you said you already tried factory reset / wipe, could it be a loose cable wire somewhere or maybe a problem with the screen to mainboard connector?

awesome. theres so many little shortcuts like this ive yet to learn. thanks
On my sgs, there is a green colour attached to to the grey colours, I can see it really good when using Screen test app on the gray scale screen, all grey is sort of green!

Just got a brand new device. Used it for about an hour, then the exact same thing happened - out of the blue.
Any possible home-front solutions? Having to take it to be serviced is a PITA for me ATM.
Mine definitely seems to have banding in the video player control pane before the video playback starts. Can someone please post a screenshot of how it should be? I haven't seen the banding issue anywhere else except the battery charging indicator when charging the phone when it's turned off. And as far as I remember they were always like that.
So can someone please post a screenshot of how it should be for me to compare.
I have the same problem appeared after upgrading to Froyo. Brightness increased (even it is high in the lowest setting) and color saturation also increased. As a result, i see bandings or lines where a color gradient exist. I added an example photo from "Samsung Apps" page. You can easily see bandings on the bottom. I see such things in a PC screen if color adjustment is not optimum. So there must be a way to adjust screen saturation and brightness by a software through registry i think. It seems like a software problem. I think it is a very rare problem, i found few people on the web complaining about it. Mostly HTC Desire, which use also Samsung Amoled screen, users complaining about it.
I did everything said on forums to solve it but no way. I flashed many different roms both eclair and froyo, use a software given in HTC forums to change RGB color, changed color settings through video player etc. Nothing worked. Please help

I looked at ur pic. I honestly dont see any problem with it. What is this banding ur talking about?

Bottom of the screen, around "2010 Samsungs Electronics". This part should be a smooth color transition from blue to transparent but there are circular lines between colors. Is your screen the same.
Another example. The one on the phone looks white on the upper part where a color transition from dark to light black exist and there are visible lines. But normally it was looking like the other picture (taken from notebook screen) before this problem
ah on that screen i already see 8 shades of blue, most be around 4k colors .. bummer though, it's normally a software problem, doubt that a conector has come loose. (but possible if it's a pimped up composite plug with Y/Pr/Pb, .. eh still impossible cos it's getting decoded before that)

Nexus One too bright

Is there a way to lower the brightness beyond the default minimal setting? I've noticed that even on the lowest setting, I can still use the thing like a flashlight.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Too bright? Haven't heard that one. Mainly complaints about not bright enough in the sunlight and such.
I'm no programmer or anything, but as far as I know the android system has a brightness value of 0-100%, and the user (or apps) can change the value to anywhere in between. There might be a hack to undervolt the screen, but as far as I know one doesn't exist.
I'm guessing he has an AMOLED... in which case, I understand. The screen is bloody bright, even on the lowest setting.
My only idea would be to install one of the CM roms that lets you use the surface flinger mod to change your display to a monochrome red.
download 'screen filter' or 'total screen control' from the market. they allow you to apply a dark layer dim your phones screen to however much you want. hope this helps
Only time I really notice mine is too bright is reading if I use white on black, so I use a grey on black.. Fixed.
Although yeah, if i poke into the market first thing in the morning or such, it's pretty bright.
Problem with the screen overlays with surface flinger and such is you have to manually enable/disable them. It would be nice if the screen would go lower in some cases.

[Local screen calibration] Workaround for uniformity problems

If you think your screen is not uniform, then you know the way it is not uniform. If you haven't realized such thing, please leave this thread for your sanity :cyclops:
UPDATE:
I have done some research and experiments and came up with this solution. If you suffer from uniformity problems, this might be useful. If you are a developer, please consider building around this idea!
Aim :
To make our screen look perfectly uniform without any tint/temperature problems.
What you need:
Download these from play store:
-Screen Filter
-Gradient Wallpaper
Also on your computer [optional , for fine-tuning] :
-Adobe photoshop
How to
1) Open white/gray solid images to observe your uniformity issues. Take a pen and write down, or even make a simple drawing ( eg. left edge is more yellow and right edge is more blue)
2) Launch gradient wallpaper app. Look at your notes and make a gradient which is exactly the negative of your initial tint (eg. left edge is more blue and right edge is more yellow). Save it.
3) Launch screen filter app. Select the gradient image you saved and load it as a filter. Increase the transparency and calibrate it to your liking.
4) (optional) Use Photoshop for much more flexibility with places of gradients/ shapes etc.

Hello everyone,
Nexus 4 is an awesome phone with minor imperfections. One of them is washed out colors which is fixed by many custom kernels.
The other imperfection is light bleeding, which is a hardware issue. However this and similar issues with hardware causes non-uniformity (or unevenness) across the display specially if it is held horizontally on a white/gray backgrounds.
I have used 10-15 different handled device with ips displays and %80 of them had a visible non-uniformity. Some of us might be totally fine with it while some of us like myself might want better calibration.
HERE IS THE REQUEST:
I have tried fauxdisplay/kernel for a week and I can customize my screen pretty much however I want. The problem is this kernel/app applies the rules for all of the pixels. It would me awesome if we could have 'local' calibrations. (people who use photoshop should be familiar with adjustment brush that changes properties of chosen area).
Tell me what you think about this.

What do you mean exactly? And why?

To fix non uniformities across the screen . For IPS screens, when you tilt left you willsee aa yellow tint on the screen, when you tilt right you will see a blue one. If you are looking directly without tilting, right side will be bluer than left side (like a gradient most visible with gray) To fix this, we can tell our kernel to render left side little bit bluer to reduce the gradient effect.
Hope this is explanatory.

i get what you mean, but im sure its a LOT more work than just that..
on another note, i read that the optimus g rom on the nexus makes the screen look absolutely amazing - im waiting till someone ports the settings for that onto our phone and hope that this calibration issue ends there.. too much time is being wasted on this (for good measure, yes. but still)

You are asking too much.
Yes you are. LCD screens cannot have regional calibration.

I don't know how current calibrating is done, so I'd be happy if some developer can help me out.
There are possiblities:
software filtering -> gpu-> driver-> screen (slow)
gpu-> graphic matrix-> software calibration -> driver-> screen (fast)
gpu-> graphic matrix-> driver-> calibration within driver with given values -> screen (fastest)
if it is the first one, it can easily be done. You can choose what to do to any individual pixel. For example, It is done when there are pop-up windows. While pop-up is bright and visible, remaining area is darkened/grayed with some software processing. So with root access, a program might make sure that some area of the screen is always dimmer, brighter or more saturated than other, while it is running on background. (like a filter that is always on top. This for sure can be done: look at many apps that you can slide from left anywhere within android and some menu pops up. What if instead of a menu %85 transparent and blue [to fix yellowing] solid color stays there?)
If it is second one, well, then it is hard as it needs a lot of C programming- testing. But it will be faster than first option.

[Q] 2 Questions:ColorBoost and pink spot in camera foto

Hi everyone!
I am a happy owner of AtrixHD,but two things I do not like:
1.Color boost technology of display.Such colors are acceptable for gaming, web browsing e.t.c.,but playing video and watching foto give very unreal colors, oversaturated, especialy pink(red).Definetly, there is no color adjustment in stock roms.Is there any chance to adjust colors(especially their saturation) within the settings of any custom rom or kernel which are discussed in development section?
2.In low light conditions(for example:small room with one window in cloudy day)my stock camera app is givng a spot with more pink color in the center of display, same spot appears on foto. All other camera apps from google play have the same spot. With normal light conditions everythig is ok.Does anyone has the same?Is it a hardware or software issue?
Thanks in advance for all replies, this i s a great forum.Sorry for my English,I am from Ukraine,Eastern Europe.

I know that ParanoidAndorid (not ours, OFFICIAL PA) uses custom color tweaks in their Nexus kernels. There might be a way to something similar for us, but I've never looked into it nor would I know where to start. Defy CM's were\are able to run color filters via software, not what you're looking for, but it does mean that its possible to tweak the display levels via software.
I've never had the pink spot issue, not in low light or good light. My low lights are just washy and kinda crappy, but no spots. HDR does much better in low light, sucks it doesn't work on 4.2 . HDR does look a bit oversaturated so you might not like it. Might be HW, might not be -- can't really say with any certainty.

ROOTDIM The best app that exists for z2

I'm amazed there should be a sticky on this!! If you have a rooted z2, then rootdim on playstore let's you lower brightness far below stock. And it's hardware, not an on top layer which just destroys contrast. It makes your z2 dim just like an Amoled screen! Best of all it saves batteries unlike software dimmers!
I use it together with another app called night filter which is actually a software screen filter, I apply a slight reddish tint to save my eyes further.
(side note: The developer has made a remake of rootdim called ScreenDim but it currently doesn't work for me as well as rootdim )
HTH!
Thank you for sharing, I was looking for a way how to make the screen as dim as possible, finally bumped into this thread Though I would probably prefer using Xposed module or force system brightness to go as low as rootdim, nevertheless very nice app
thanks for the info, It worked excellent
this one here huh ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.pruss.superdim
Gotta try it out. Sometimes i do think the screen is way to bright.
Edit:
Don't really like it.
when you press 25% you can press it 3 times and the screen flickers and changes brightness 3 times.
also depending on which App you open screen may change brightness for no reason.
Do you guys get it to work on 5.0.2? Mine don't dim anymore. Root access is granted.
