[Q] Question about CWM - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to install ClockWork mod on my phone (Samsung i897 Captivate) so I can do a nandriod backup.
I don't want to lose anything on my phone.
Whats the best way of doing this?

(There r a few different ways depending on what android platform u r on. But here is one way...)
U will have to use Odin or Heimdall to flash a kernel that is made to run on the android platform u r on.
i.e. if u r on GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4, u can use the KK4 Corn Kernel. I recommend version 7.0A
Once u flash the appropriate kernel, reboot into recovery and make a backup. ...Also a good idea to copy pics and other important stuff to ur pc.
Don't use Rom Manager because it does not work well with the Captivate.
And also Titanium Backup Pro is a great Investment in my opinion.
And the Stickied Threads will prove helpful as well.

I have the version that you have listed.
My goal is to install cyanogenmod on my phone but I want to do a Nandroid backup before I do so I can restore my phone back to the state it was in before CM install.

After u flash CM, in order to return to the backup u made while on KK4 (because of the different partitions, i.e. bml vs mtd) u would 1st have to Odin or Heimdall back to Stock KK4, Odin/Heimdall flash KK4 Corn Kernel, Reboot into Recovery and Restore ur backup.
Once u go to CM, u will have to Odin/Heimdall back to Stock KK4 in order to get to KK4. U cannot reboot into recovery while on cm and restore ur backup u made on kk4. If u try, a soft brick will more than likely occur.
(A nandroid backup has to be restored on the android platform/rom where u made the backup).
Its all because of the different partitions and file systems used in Stock firmware vs CM. Just the way it is.
Like i said previously, Titanium Backup Pro is a big help....especially if ur just goin back to stock firmware that u have root access on.
In the end if u r just wanting to backup ur apps and their data and then restore that after u flash CM, then TB Pro is ur answer.

I do not want to lose my call/text/internet history nor do I want to lose my application data (example Angry birds saved data, not the app itself).

Just use TB Pro for apps and data backup.
And find a reliable app on the Play Store for texts, call log, web history etc backup.

I got to thinking I am going to have to install CWM anyways. Could I install CWM and then run a Nandroid backup and then flash my CM Rom?

the only reliable way to install cwm from stock is to flash a kernel that includes cwm, via usb. the corn kernel 7.0a recommended by 4-2ndtwin is a safe way to do that. it doesn't touch your user apps and user data.
then you can do a nandroid backup from cwm, and go on to flash other roms via cwm, from zip files on your phone.
as noted, to keep your user apps and data for later roms, use Titanium Backup. only restore user apps and data, not system apps.
you cannot take a KK4 nandroid backup and restore it over a later CM rom. you will brick the phone.

Forgot about mentioning this Utility until i was making a post a lil bit ago...
If on Stock KK4...here is a [Utility]KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 that u can gain Root access through and also get the KK4 Corn Kernel version 7.0A that has CWM Recovery so that u can proceed with flashin ur rom of choice.
See post # 4 in the thread linked for a workin download...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26710533&postcount=1
U can use this method if desired, instead of using Heimdall or Odin to flash the KK4 Corn Kernel.

Do you know where I can get a good known KK4 Stock ROM?
And BTW do you know if CM will work with the corn kernel?
Ive looked on CMs site but it doesn't say anything.

^
KK4 Corn Kernel will not work for CM.
And a good KK4 based Rom is Legend by the Collective team. Look a few pages back in the Development forum. (edit...here it is...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20288065&postcount=1 )

[Q] From CM9 to Stock via CWM?

Is it possible to go from CM9 to stock via CWM? Restoring an old rom backup that was stock 2.2 while currently on CM9 or Miui (4.0.4)?
Will that work?
No. You will need to first return to 2.2, then get CWM, then restore your backup.

Don't think so. You'll have to Odin to stock

Not sure remember correctly but I think CM is MTD and 2.2 is not (rfs i think). So going back to stock to get rid of the MTD is nessesary for the backup to work.
Yes... CM is mtd and touhwiz roms are bml. Odin is required but I can't use a computer version of Odin and the mobile version won't convert between mtd and bml. People need to make all roms mtd

Restore CWM 2.5.1.3 nandroid backup on CWM 5.5

I did a nandroid backup on a 2.2 rom with cwm 2.5.1.3 before installing an ICS rom (AOKP milestone 6) that upgraded it. Now I want to restore the cwm 2.5.1.3 backup, can I restore it using the same cwm 5.5 that the rom installed or should I perform an additional action? In case that the answer is that I have to use the same cwm version as the one I did the nandroid backup with, can I simply just flash that cwm version from the updated one?
Since u went to ICS Rom, u will have to use Odin or Heimdall to flash back to the Stock 2.2 Froyo (use one with no bootloaders. If u have GB bootloaders they are backwards compatible). Then flash the 2.2 Rom u were on when u made the back up and after that boot into recovery and restore the back up.

Could I use this same guide? I think I can but since I'm not on a stock rom that gives me pause.
U gotta do it the way i posted previously, because of ICS being MTD/yaffs2 partition and Froyo being BML/RFS. No way around it. U gotta flash back to Stock.

Mobile odin pro or titanium back up????

Hey
Im abit confused as to what these programs do. Now ive yet to root but i nees to know do i need both of these or do they all do the same thing. I would like to try out some roms and maybe install themes etc but im confused which i need or if i need any of them at all lol
Appreciate the help....rooting a desire was so much easier.
Thanx

Mobile odin is rom flasher, just like pc odin. What you can do with pc odin, same you can do with mobile odin, without need of pc. Even i can say better then pc odin.
Titanium backp is backup tool for your data, like watever stuff you have installed.
You need both
Here short order how you can go.
Use titanium to backup data
Use mobile odin to flash rom
Wipe data (with safe kernel)
Restore data with titanium

One more..
U can flash kernel n modem using mobile odin..
and only tar extension that can flash through mobile odin for rom n kernel n bin extension for modem..

What if there's a need to back up e existing rom before using Odin or mobile odin?
In case something goes wrong? Or does it mean 'starting from stock all over'?
Or does titanium perform full backup of rom aka system other than apps n data?
To backup complete rom + data Inc application use nandroid backup.
Titanium backup only apps and data not rom.

Use a nandroid backup to go back to stock ics
If using odin, usually you don't but it's better to wipe before flashing the ics rom. Go to recovery while on jb. Do wipes the use the option of reboot into download mode in the recovery itself.

If you want to revert back to stock from cm11.you have to flash the stock ROM through Odin then root it then flash cocore kernel and restore nandroid backup.
If not want to go through PC then
First flash custom ROM 4.3 make all wipes and format then flash cm 10.1 with all wipes and format (especially /preload partition) flash cocore again wipe all then restore nandroid backup.

Why would somebody give you this backup considering that it contains data, settings and personal information?
As I see in your signature you have a totally different phone model than Galaxy S Advance GT-I9070, can you be more specific with what you need?

There is no "best rom".
I told you to install Samsung USB drivers, not Kies. Sometimes Kies is making you a problem when you are in Download mode. Turn it off on PC, remove it in Task manager too.
