GPS tracking issues on Jellybean Rom (X-bean 2) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
For a couple of months I have been testing several top roms for Galaxy S GT-I9000. The problem is that when I found the most stable and faster one (for my requirements), I have the same problem over and over again, being unable to find the cause. Everything is related to GPS tracking.
To start with the begining, I bought the phone as a present for my wife a while ago. Because of the fact that I wanted to be able to keep up with ALL new applications from Google Store, I have flashed Jellybean [X-bean 2 ROM] (finding it runing considerably faster than the actual third version).
However, after installing all the applications that we were using, I found out that after a couple of GPS (or network) tracking uses, the tracking part just stops working until reboot.
For example, in Viber you have the option to send location when writing a message. After a period of using it, it either keeps giving a past location (which sounds like getting stuck on a specific location fix) or even an error that is unable to locate or something like that.
We also considered funny to track when needed where each of us is (on our way) when we want to meet somewhere in the city after jobs. For that we have used "Where are you sweetie" application. After a few uses, it gives you a location updated dozens of minutes ago, or even "Unable to locate phone" message.
Additionally, for security purposes, I had installed Cerberus. As a test, I wanted to see if that fails too at the same chapter and of course, I got the same result. Either an old location (unless I force it to refresh by activating GPS real-time tracking) or even a "cannot communicate to the phone" sometimes.
The funny part is that after a restart it all works perfect for some time.
And I want to mention that this happened for all jellybean custom roms that I have tested.
I am sure that I am not the only one having the same problem, so even though this is not something that we couldn't have lived without, I was just curious if either of you guys have heard of this or of a fix for this issue.

Installed and Uninstalled "WeFI" and now my WiFi won't auto connect.

Hello Everyone.
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, although have been reading and applying a lot of knowledge you guys have! the forum is great!
Anyway, I have an unlocked HTC TyTN II, everything worked fine and I overall very satisfied with the device...
I made a foolish thing! I installed the "Wefi" utility and after playing with it for a little while, I didn't like the thing.. so, I decided to uninstall it.. however, now I find that my kaiser cannot longer connect automatically to my wireless networks after resume.. Now I only get the notification that it has found available wireless networks and, even though I chose not to show the message anymore, it does it every time, and when it does not, the phone doesn't connect to my WiFi.. so I need to do it manually... which is very annoying..
I already restored original registry keys under HLM\Comm\TNETW12511\Parms with no luck so far...
What can I do?... I'm still on the original WM 6.0, have not loaded any ROM changes yet..
Your help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!
Oscar
Fix for auto connect problem after removing WeFi
My name is Galia Finkelstein and I work at the support desk at WeFi. This doesn't happen anymore on the new version that's been released so for the older version we have a version fix for the problem with the automatic connection, just run this file and you should be good to go http://wefi.com/static/RestoreZCAutoConnect.exe
If I can assist with anything else please drop me a line at [email protected].
WeFi post-uninstall problems
Hi!
I am sufferring from the same problems as "obadillo" - see above.
I downloaded and installed the latest version of WeFi, but after a couple of days of use, I found that I didn't like it, and it also took up too much of my valuable "today" screen space.
After uninstalling, I found that firstly, all my previous wi-fi settings had been lost (WEP keys for my home network, my work network etc etc), and secondly, even after re-enterring these details, my device (HTC Touch UK Version - Orange UK) - (running WM6 Pro) refused to auto-connect when I switch the WiFi on.
After reading the reply from Galia (directly above my post), I downloaded and ran the executable, but found that it made no difference.
Any ideas anyone? I did email Wefi's support email address, but as yet have received no reply.
Thanks in advance!
I have also tried this fix with no success (running WM5). I have also sent an email to wefi support. No response. I would recommend you stay away from this software.
We-Fi Latest Version
I have found a (kind of) solution! I have installed the latest version of We-Fi (downloaded from their website), and then DEselected it in my Today programs. So even though its not in use, its wifi parameters still overrule the PPCs local params. This seems to allow me to switch on and off WiFi WITHOUT using the WeFi software, and it now autoconnects, even with the several wireless networks I have stored, whenever I switch WiFi on, it may take a few seconds to connect, but it now does every time.
Not the greatest "solution", but at least the problem is partially solved.
But as the good man above says, unless you're VERY sure you want to install WeFi, do not install, because you will lose ALL preexisiting WiFi connections and settings etc..
Have a good one!

Hello again, XDA devs!
I also had the problem and I'm struggling with Amir, some guy from the WeFi staff, to get the problem solved or at least recognized.
I left a complete description on my blog with links to people having problems. Here's the article (without links):
Before you consider installing WeFi on your Windows Mobile device, you might want to read this cautiously and save yourself some problems.
If you have not yet tried it, you're not missing much. Although promising, the app takes over your device. It controls your today screen, messes up your wi-fi parameters and some rarer stability issues were also reported.
First, the app needs .Net CF v.2.0, something that takes space and puts more useless crap on your device. Then the app doesn't just find networks and connect to them. Instead it overrides your wi-fi parameters and inserts its own code, thus the uninstallation problems. WeFi also takes a lot of your today screen's estate for basically nothing. How much screen space? Take a look.
Upon uninstalling it, many noticed their devices stopped automatically connecting to wireless networks, among other, rarer problems. The only known fix to the problem is to hard-reset your device and to stay the **** away from this app. We also saw a link to a .exe file somewhere but no one left feedback about it so we assume it's just as good as WeFi. You might also reinstall it, hide it and use it to take care of the wi-fi stuff or go in Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi everytime to select a network to connect to.
The developers were quick to comment about the problem and said they are working on it (see the first comment to this post). However their product page doesn't mention the problem yet and people still get caught. I left them feedback about *some* of the concerned device, assuming it's not all of them, hoping for a change. Feel free to do the same and put some pressure on these guys too.
You might also read one of those threads and see for yourself.

I'm trying to get the warning to reach all the download spots, if you guys feel like helping. This is just unacceptable, let's do something about it!
Haim head of WeFi Windows Mobile development team here
Hello all,
First, let me assure you all that we are doing our best to solve any user problem as quickly as possible.
Out of the thousands of mobile users we have, there are really only a few users who complained about this problem.
We released a fix that you can find in: http://www.wefi.com/download/client/RestoreZCAutoConnect.exe
which after executing and doing soft reset should solve the problem.
As our support team explained to “primemaps” via e-mails (sent in 08/07) this fix only works if you uninstall WeFi first.
What you are all describing is that ZeroConfig stopped auto connecting.
By avoiding the manipulation of ZeroConfig default timeouts in our next version (which should be released in about 2 weeks from now), this should not happen anymore.
If this does not help you or you have encountered any other problem – please send me an email to [email protected] and I promise a fast response,
it would help if you mentioned your WeFi version, Device model and ActiveSync version.
I hope you would all choose to install our next version and enjoy the many benefits it can bring you.

Can't work with it and can't work without it
With my HTC TyTN II I had similar problems as others have described, or maybe even worse: I could no longer work to any wireless networks. It would disconnect in less than one second every time.
I did a hard reset and that didn't work!
I also tried the "fix" the WeFi representative suggested but that didn't help at all either.
What finally helped me was Namwollem's solution: Install WeFi again and removed it from the Today screen (but kept it installed).
I can't help wonder if WeFi changes something in the ROM since a hard reset didn't even fix it.
One of these days I will have to install the ROM all over and see if it makes a difference, but I wish I could avoid that!
I hope others won't be stupid like me and install this #$%[email protected]#&$ software!
Nothing helps for my Diamond to restore Wifi signal
I have Htc diamond with newest Rom downloaded from htc.com.
My problem is that since i installed aplication WEFI(older version) and uninstalled it, i cannot see ANY available wifi networks.. I tried alot of things. I tried soft reset, hard reset, i installed WEFI (newest version) , in moments wifi works and shows available networks and i can connect, but after it doesnt work again.. I would say it shows networks only ocasionally(even if im always surrounded by at least 10 hotspots). I installed newest Rom again, i installed old official ROM, i always put mamximum performance instead of battery, and still i have no results/cannot see ANY available networks). I have a feeling like i really have a hardware problem with wifi now..But again i think whatever it is its caused by this aplication WEFI. Does anylone have any ideas? i saw some Rafael radio ROM , maybe i can try to install that?
Thanks
AArrrggghh!
This god-awful program rears its ugly head again! I have solved the problem totally now by getting a new handset!! Now I have my Touch HD (Blackstone), one thing I WILL NOT do is install this garbage!! A quick search thru the forums here will reveal a small and very useful program which will with one click switch-on WiFi (and auto connect to the signal it finds if stored in your preferred networks) and with another click will switch WiFi off! Its called AKWifiToggle, and while no where near as fancy as WeFi, IT WORKS and DOESN'T MUCK UP YOUR PHONE!!!

Google Maps Problem

Every time I use the Track Location feature, it fails. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and it still won't work. It takes me to San Francisco instead of Chicago(which is where I live). It used to work the week I got the wing (about 2 weeks ago). It's pretty much stock. I don't use any ROM's and have even performed a clear storage. Any help would be appreciated. I have done a search.
Still isn't working.
It tells me to check the GPS settings. I haven't changed them nor do I know how.
Have you tried with a GPS receiver? (If you have access to one)
I have found that the track location feature while sometimes is surprisingly accurate most often is only close enough for a general location. Good for a local search but not close enough to pinpoint my location with accuracy.
But discrepancy that is off by states I have no idea. IT gets your location by triangulating from the cell towers, maybe there is a glitch in that area that is unidentified. It isn't something you could ask your provider about (actually they might have an answer or be able to help but I wouldn't bet on it), even though they might be at fault. You might see if you can report it as a bug to the google mobile maps team and see if they will respond.

Try a different phone radio firmware. Mine used to fail when I used the newest Radio. It's either that or the information about your towers has been set up incorrectly on google's servers. Find someone in your area with a phone that you can install google maps on and try to see if the problem is still there. If it is, contact google about it.
That just happens sometimes with Google Maps.
I live in germany and sometimes Google Maps says I am somewhere in France or Spain (one time even somewhere in the atlantic or pacifik...)
Just wait some time and try to locate again (don't restart google maps).
If that doesn't help, walk around a bit and try again.

[Q] [SOLVED] GPS suddenly stopped locking, ideas?

I have a rooted SGS, but with the official ROM 2.2 (unfortunately, until the EUR 2.3.3 official rolls out for my area. I always had extremely slow GPS locks, even worse compared to the Magic and ZTE Blade I had. I had never modified the NTP server, but anyway this affects fix time only if you are connected to the internet.
2 days my GPS went off. Specifically, launching an application such as igo does makes the satellite icon in the status bar flash, indicating that it tries acquire a GPS fix. And then the icon ... disappears! First time I see something like that. Closing and reopening a navigation application, the icon now does not appear at all, as if GPS is totally disabled. But the application does not complain about lack of GPS functionality!
The only way to make the GPS icon to appear is to reboot and restart a GPS-using application. Then the icon disappears again. This happens with Google Maps, iGo, Navigon.
Running GPS Status is a bit different. In this case, the GPS icon remains flashing as long as the application remains active. But no fix whatsoever is achieved... I have tried to Reset A-GPS data and download new data into it. Nothing.
Relating what can be changed on the mobile, I remembered that just upgraded the version of google maps sometime a few days ago and I enabled caching to be able to off-line browse maps. Thinking that this could somehow be the culprit, I disabled offline browsing and rebooted again. Problem persists. Even tried changing the SUPL server, as mentioned in http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...air-and-froyo/
Any ideas on what might be wrong here. The phone is in perfect condition, no crashes, NOTHING! It is within the guarantee period, but I'd hate returning it. Any info will be appreciated.
Phone firmware is given in my signature. This phone is, and has been, running official 2.2 out of the box. No custom firmwares on it ever.
It was that damned Google Maps update after all! I stumbled into this: http://www.google.ru/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=53e25a0d053f4eeb&hl=en
Uninstalled (the updates over the stock) Google Maps and presto: locked just fine!
Case solved

[Q] Network/Cell Location not working

I have a Razr i on Orange UK, and have found that apps that use the network/cell location (instead of Wifi or GPS) don't work. I've tested this with various apps, but the problem can be seen with Google Maps:
- Disable GPS and Wifi in settings
- Tap location crosshairs and wait
- A 'waiting for location' message will appear, followed a few seconds later by 'your current location is temporarily unavailable'
I'm not sure if this is an issue with my provider (Orange) or with the phone itself. Can anyone else reproduce this issue?
I have the same issue here in Brazil with my provider (Claro).
My other 2 phones can find the location using the network, with a precision of about 1km, but RAZR i doesn't even "try" to find it. I receive the same message as you using Maps. One of that other 2 phones is a Motorola Spice XT300 (using Android 2.1 at the same provider), so this issue may be especific for this device or for the newest versions of Android.
I would like to use the location based on the network to activate wifi and other tasks with the SmartActions (without GPS, wifi and bluetooth to save battery), if somebody knows a way to make this work, I would be very thankful too.
I can try this later today on my father's Galaxy SII (using ICS too), and will post here the result if anyone doesn't post it before me.
EDIT: I tested it again, and it works! Maps could find my location with a good precision (better than 100m) only using the 3G network. By the way, the SII can do this too. I don't know why it works now, but maybe with a 2G network the device can't find the location.
I found a fix for a similar sounding issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9576852&postcount=108 However that fix requires root access which I'm not currently willing to try on my new Razr i.
After reading that link, I did manage to fix it for now by going to Settings > Apps > All > Google Services Framework and pressing the Clear Data button. I was prompted again to enabled Location Services. I then rebooted my phone. After a reboot the Play Store didn't work at first, but it sorted itself out after a few minutes.
I'll say that this is fixed 'for now'... some other threads discussing similar problems show that such fixes sometimes stop working after a period of time.

Gps stopped working. Kind of

So i recently switched from sprinit to verizon and at the sametime updated my phone with the new system update. Since then my gps randomly stops keeping track of my location in a trip. I downloaded a gps tool from the app store and when it happens i use the app to reset my gps and it works. But then later if I use google maps again it randomly gives me the same issue. Its a easy enough fix but its annoying to have to keep doing that.
Was hoping there was some kind of fix or am I just unlucky and the gps is starting to go out.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Ya it was set to global. Hopefully it fixes it. Will test it out later when i need to leave work.
Having the same issue. I believe it started occurring after software update: N950USQU7DSL5 which was pushed out early February for me.

Ya I switched over from global to lte/cmda like chefji suggested and it helped were its not occuring as much but I still have the issue. Hopefully it gets fixed. If not i may have to try to revert back to an older update.
I just saw this thread after posting my questio above. Same issue and I'm on Verizon too. Mine has always been a Verizon phone. I dont recall exactly when the problem started but definitely within last 2 months. Never had issues before. For me, the workaround seems to be to use an app called GPS Fix/Optimizer and on the home page of that app, click on the button that says System off on bottom left and turn it to System on. I hate having to do these extra steps and never had a problem with any other Android phone doing this.
Try wiping the Cache Partition. If that doesn't help, backup your device and perform a Hard Factory reset.

Wipe cache partition but there is no reason to do a hard factory reset. This is a GPS problem and not a software issue. It is not isolated to Note 8 phones but seems to affect S9, S9+, Note 9, Note 10, and possibly a few others. It also started early Feb after Note 8's received a security update and the others received the Android 10 update. Samsung, Google, and especially Verizon are all pointing fingers at each other for blame instead of working together to try and come up with a fix. One thing I have found is that unlike the countless Android phones I have had in the past, there is absolutely no way to control the GPS. There no longer is an on/off switch. The best available choice is to search deep in settings to find Location but the only thing it controls is on/off switches for Wifi Scanning or bluetooth scanning. Turning both of those on now is considered High Accuracy. The only thing that has worked for me is using an app called GPS Fix/Optimizer in conjunction with an app called GPS Status. By using both of those apps before using Waze or Google maps, allows me to successfully navigate and it can find my exact position. I have also discovered that besides Waze and G Maps, many are reporting the same kind of problem with other location based apps such as Uber and Lyft. This needs to be fixed and I could care less which company is at fault but one of them needs to step up or all need to come together and figure out the problem...

Hello, I am having the same problem. I have a Galaxy Note 8 from AT&T, this problem started end of February, workaround is to switch the location OFF and then back ON but is annoying. I reset network, clear cache and nothing fixed the problem so I thought was a problem in the phone itself so I submitted a claim to Asurion, got the brand new replacement phone and the following day exact same problem appeared.
Now reading this thread I am fully convinced that is a bug. I hope it gets solved ASAP.
I posted about this on another thread and what I have stumbled on:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82337821&postcount=18
I have seemed to narrow it down to it only happening when I connect my Note 8 to my 2016 Chevy Silverado and use Waze or Google maps on my radio via Android Auto. I made a few changes that I mentioned in the above thread to the battery settings for a couple apps. Because of the VID, I haven't been driving as much so I haven't done a lot of testing but this has seemed to help.
Well I thought it was fixed but it doesnt seem to be and it really seems to be an Android Auto glitch. Just yesterday, I had to run a couple errands and had phone plugged in for Android Auto. First couple trips, it worked just fine. Then one more trip, all I saw was the floating blue dot in Waze. While still plugged in to my Chevy, I went to GPS Fix and clicked to turn system on. I then went to GPS Status and it couldnt get a location fix. In GPS Status, I also selected Manage A-GPS State. First I tried reset and no fix. Then I did download and again, no fix. I gave it a little bit of time to see if it would work but it didnt. So next I unplugged my phone from my Chevy and again checked in GPS Status and no fix. I again went into Manage A-GPS State, reset, no fix, then download, and it fixed on my location right away. So for me, this is really pointing to an Android Auto issue. Hopefully a fix will come along soon...
Just to add, Waze had already been started once I fired up the Android Auto on the My Link Chevy radio as I had started a route. Waze was still running in the background when I disconnected from my Chevy radio so that kind of eliminates Waze as the problem, at least for me. Especially when GPS Status couldnt get a fix while I still had Android Auto running on my Chevy but as soon as I disconnected and ran through the GPS Status reset and download, I had a fix and Waze worked fine again.
Has this been resolved yet? Any fixes found?
Not completely resolved yet but the annoying workaround gets it working again. It should just work on it's own without all the extra steps. And I was able to get semi confirmation after creating a thread in the Google Support sub forum for Android Auto. I am being told that when plugging in the phone to use Android Auto that Android Auto attempts to also connect to the gps in my Chevy. It's kind of confusing and dont quite understand exactly what is happening. My vehicle does not have a dedicated gps system but I am being told that there could be some kind of GPS in the vehicle anyway and that could be causing the problem. I call BS on this info but I also didnt have any part of creating Android Auto. If this is what is happening, it pretty much says that Android Auto is probably the cause of the issue. I dont need military precision on my gps location and my phone inside my house will give me an accuracy of around 10 feet. No reason to be more accurate than that and this shouldn't even be a part of the Android Auto app.
https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/45792804?hl=en
I posted this in the other thread but I'll add it here for completeness. I'm having the same issue on an unbranded note 8. But I'm not using android auto. I can use gps tools and it holds a lock fine. But if additional programs are launched, waze, maps, jbv1 I lose lock.
My Note 8 has the problem, I am not using WAZE, I am using The FitBit App with my VERSA 2, My Husband has the Note 9 and is using the FitBit App with his VERSA 2. His resulting miles walked and my resulting miles walked should be almost identical. They are not. I am consistently showing less miles than he does. When looking at the exercise map, generated by the GPS data, His walk path follows the streets we walked accurately, while mine cuts the corners, has me walking in drunken path across the properties located near the road and in some instances cutting across non walkable terrain. Giving me less mileage than my husband. Thankfully, my steps are accurately accounted for. I want this problem fixed. I don't like being cheated of my exercise miles.
Any update here? Note8 on Verizon. Having the same problem with Endomondo (fitness app) and Google Maps. Hard reset phone, and it's still problematic. For me, it might start out working fine, then midway thru a run it will stop. Usually resetting the app will make it work again.
I use T-mobile, and I tried just about everything and almost gave up. Today I was thinking that mayve its the wifi and bluetooth settings helping the GPS so I went to location and turned off the wifi and bluetooth improve accuracy settings and problem is fixed for me! So much headache gone. I was about to buy a new phone.

I just tried this and it failed location fix right away after opening Waze in Android Auto on my Chevy. So still searching for a real fix...
Well it looks like the Android Auto developers are starting to listen. After creating a thread on their google community page months ago, and numerous others posting same issue, they said they were going to reach out to several posters by email with directions on creating a bug report to forward to them. They claim they have been unable to recreate the problem and wanted bug reports from several having the problem so they could take a look. I had another failure today on a trip so I created a bug file and forwarded it. We shall see what they find...
