I have only tried this on my Lumia 920, but it should work for other devices also.
Go to batteries settings and force the phone to go into battery saving mode. This will turn the back lights on the keys off.
Having the back light off is good when you are reading something on the phone at night.

It's like those android phones that lit the keys for a while then turn the lights off and you can't see where the buttons are you you tap like a tad around the phone just to go back.

i'm having an issue with my newly bought X1 in canada...just got the phone up and running a few days ago, haven't done anything to the phone yet in terms of installing software, etc...
got off the subway (no signal on subway), got to work, checked my phone and i see that it's in airplane mode...wtf...can't dial or receive calls...tried turning it off, it goes back to normal then goes back to airplane mode...keeps doing that, and after reset it's still doing that...i have no idea wat to do...do i need a hard reset and how do i do that??
Please help!
hard reset
dude thats a bummer. to hard reset either go to the phone settings or use the front keys and power to do it.
1. start/settings/system/clear storage
go ahead and enter 1234 and it will hard reset
2. have the phone turn off, hold down 2 front silver keys under the screen, press power button, when you feel vibration let go and continue to hold down 2 silver front buttons. go with instuction press r on keypad and space.
i'd try the 1. option then if that don't work go with the second.
if that don't work use search to find more option.
This is happening to me also...keeps on jumping into airplane mode.
Wondering if it's because the battery is very low and it is trying to conserve battery???

I have noticed my X1 turned off the phone when the batterya was VERY low. But that was shortly before it went out completely.
all,I am using CM 4.1.11.1 with Community Hero Theme.
I know the reason for draining my battery but I don't know how to solve it, can any one help?
issue:
When you press phone END button to keep th ephone in SLEEP mode,
- Phone goes to SLEEP mode and the Screen light is OFF.
- But, the Light on Physical keyboard is not switched off some times.
To see this, Get into a dark room and press END button to keep the phone in SLEEP mode.
Once the Phone is in SLEEP Mode,Do not Slide your Keyboard, Keep as it is and observe the Light from space between Slider and keyboard.
(I observed while I was sleeping..my phone was off but there was some light coming out)
I think this is not happening all the times but I have seen it many times and it is draining my battery.
To solve this, I use to open the Slider Press END button and make sure the lights or OFF and close the Slider.
Has any one observed this? can any one tell me how to solve this?
Is there a way to disable and enable the back light of Keyboard?

i usually close the keyboard, press home, press end and all lights shut off. hope this helps.
palosjr, yes I do the same. But as I said it doesn't happen all the time.
Also, it happens only with CM 4.1.11.1. I am not sure what ROM u have.

The 6 hard buttons (menu, home, search, back, cal end, call answer) on the front of the device LED's will not turn off. They are always on when the phone is active and in sleep mode. How do I turn them off?
Ouch. That's a great question. Try Adjbrightness on the market. See if that helps.

If you're on a cm rom you can turn them off in settings. Settings/cm/display/auto light/click use custom/edit other levels/buttons set all to 0, save changes.
sent from my hero, which no longer sucks ass.
Battery went dead. Now vibration feedback setting for the capacitive buttons is greyed out and won't turn back on. Power saving is off.
Also, capacitive lights don't work anymore and keyboard vibration is greyed out. Wtf?
Any solution?
Update [fix].. I fixed all this nonsense by enabling power saving mode to immediate. Then turning off again. Everything is back to normal. It appears that power saving mode was stuck on when the battery went dead.
Happened to me once before also, I had to enable Ultra Power Saving & then turn it back off
Hello,
I have a rooted and TWRP installed but otherwise stock 5.something T710 that I had worked on months ago. It's been great and my daughter had been using it to watch videos a couple days ago. I took the tablet from her at the end of our road trip and noticed it had about 63% battery left. I left it in the truck while we went to the movies(about 40 degrees f outsides) and then drove home without ever touching it until we got home. I went to use it when we got home and it would not turn on. I plugged it in to let it charge thinking it died for some reason, using the stock charger, though battery icon never appeared. The next morning I went to check it and it still would not turn on.
When I press the power button or plug in or unplug the charger the Recent and Back soft key lights will turn on for a second, then turn back off again.
I've tried:
Holding the power button down alone for over 3 minutes.
Held the power and volume up button for over a minute
Power and volume down for over a minute.
Home, volume down and power for over a minute
Home, volume up and power for over a minute.
I can connect it to my computer and it recognizes that my Tab S2 is connected but no files show as the default for the device was just charging mode and not the file modes.
Odin3 v3.10.7 recognizes it as connected. But fails to send the TWRP file again.
Any help?
Since the soft keys light up and the computer recognizes the device, it sounds like maybe the tab is still working but with no display? By any chance did you have adb working? I f so you could try rebooting, or booting into recovery to see if you see anything on the screen. It's possible that when you held the button combos, that it did boot into download and recovery but you couldn't see anything? In which case it could be a hardware problem. Hopefully it will fix itself! Sorry I can't be of more help..
Well adb shows the device as unauthorized. Reboot command says the same thing.
The home key is unresponsive to my finger print unlocks and no sound plays when I try to adjust the volume, like the ding sound it makes to hear if this is the volume level I want. There are never any of the capacitive touch vibrations or whatever its called to feel when you press a button on the screen.
I was wondering if it had something to do with hardware it's just strange that it would stop working from just being in my truck. From my knowledge it was never dropped or bumped heavily or anything, at least recently.
I guess it is possible something just burned up inside, that would be inconvenient, I've got to look up if its still in warranty. I love the size and performance of this thing.
Thanks for replying, hopefully more to come.
Still can't get it to work, same issues as above. I let the battery fully die which took about 2+weeks from the initial post. Which is to say that eventually the back and recent buttons stopped lighting up. I recharged it and after holding the power button for a few seconds the same condition repeated itself. If I touch the power button or home button the back and recent button back lights turn on for a moment and turn off again. There is no other indication of life. I would assume if it was just a dead screen then I should feel it try to turn on.
If I had to replace parts which ones should I look at first? Probably just the main board?
Buy a new one. Send yours in as defect. Done.

I see that is an old thread, but I having the same issue to a certain degree. The screen goes dark, but I can see the back light. If I play around enough times, (pressing the back and process button, before pressing the sensor button... Sometime, pressing the volume buttons and back button before pressing the sensor button), everything goes back to normal. Of course, it some random time, even when I am reading a web page or some other activity, it will go back to black.
So has anyone figured out what this issue actually might be? I thought maybe it was an issue with the ROM I was using, so I just moved over to LineageOS 16, but the problem still continues!
