Hi, I know it may have been foolish of me to get the Dev edition and im not a dev but it's unlocked, more storage and i think it was the better choice.
With that being said, is there a way to root this device permanently? I see there's an HTC One toolkit but it seems to be only for the ones with the Bootloader locked. This bootloader is unlocked so is there a thread yall can direct me to in order to root and flash a custom rom?
I'd appreciate it Folks

you don't need to root it, just flash a recovery and then a custom rom and then you'll have a rooted device cause custom roms are all rooted

One more stupid question about Dev edition: will I be able to flash mods/apps from zip files using custom recovery, without rooting the phone/installing custom rooted ROM? There is a reason I don't want to root - my corporate mail will not work on rooted device, then I will need to use something like Voodoo OTA Root keeper and hide my root all the time, then restore it when I need, do what I need and after it I will need to re-install corporate email and re-enroll to company's server, in order to not get in trouble with company's Information Security, which I do not want.
I am not so interested in custom ROMs, but do interested in few mods and addons that will definitely come soon (e.g. separation of Ringtones sound level from Notification, battery charge percent on the battery icon in status bar, etc)
Thanks!

well i don't think so... if you do not want to be rooted you have to remain with the stock rom and i don't know if every mod is compatible with that

I did the same. I just flashed CWM Touch Recovery and Superuser, but AdAway disables every time I reboot and I can't get rid of the Google Bloatware and FB/Twitter - which I don't use. I tried deleting them using ES File Explorer, but they come back every time I reboot. Please help. I hate having the bloatware and knowing that it takes up almost 150 MB makes me mad!!!
/system has kernel protection and you need to flash either a kernel or rom that disables it.
Ah!

Ah! I see. Do you know of any kernel that I can safely flash and not break my phone? It's only a week old and I don't want to end up bricking it or something. Also, do you know if I can still receive OTA updates from HTC? Whenever they do come out, that is. Sorry to be asking such a noob-ish question..
Also, is that the same reason AdAway gets auto-disabled at every boot?
Faux123 has a great kernel, and yes the hosts file gets reset for the same reason.

Can you please tell me what the potential issues are, if I flash the kernel? Also, please let me know about the OTA updates and if it'll work after rooting and/or flashing a new kernel. Thank you!
Flash the kernel known as elemental X. It seems to have zero issues, I've been running it for a while now and the only difference is I am fully rooted with this kernel.AS far as OTA updates..
well whenever you unlock the bootloader at HTC's website it will definitely reset a non developer edition phone to factory defaults and from there it will remove calculator and a couple of other apps so that HTC knows you're no longer boot loader locked and yes this will prevent OTA updates.
since yours came with an unlocked bootloader in theory you could just flash the kernel and from there when you install SuperSU you will be able to do anything you need to do. With SuperSU you can temporarily turn off root so that you can do things that would normally be prevented/notice that you are rooted.
The Redbox streaming video service app is an example, it will not work on rooted devices but if you go in the SuperSU app and turn on temporary un-root. Then you are able to load the app, watch a show then close the app and restore root all without rebooting..

Thank you for allaying my fears. I flashed the faux123 kernel because it was suggested "first!" Working fine now. I rebooted and the apps haven't come back after uninstalling them. Thank you so so much for educating me!

Got my note 3 last night, came from HTC One M7. As with everything I went straight to root and rom install, maybe too hastily. Should have read instructions better.
Phone is on 4.3. Last night I was on Baseband version N900AUCBMJ5...I had it rooted and safestrap installed with no issue. Hadn't installed a rom yet, was going to do that today.
This morning, after my alarm woke me up, my phone rebooted and said was updating Android...NOW the phone is on baseband version N900AUCUBNB4, not rooted, and completely stock.
SuperSU is still installed, but doesn't work. SafeStrap is installed but it says Stats: Not Rooted.
When I reboot it still has the padlock that says "Custom" at the bottom of the boot screen.
What did I did to my phone?! How do I fix it? Is there a way to go back to MJ5 or should I? Where do I root from here and how do I install 4.4 and a custom rom?
You got the "pre kit Kat" update. You can obtain root again by using an older version of kingo. Check out the thread on how to root nb4. Once you have root access again freeze "at&t software update" so you won't automatically update again. If you update to stock kit Kat you won't be able to gain root access at this time.

How do I freeze the AT&T software update?
So after I reroot the phone and install the SafeStrap recovery, I can boot into that recovery. Then create a new rom slot and install a new rom correct? Like PureROM CE (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716737) and I should be good to go correct?
Why does it say it's not rooted but yet the padlock is still there?
There's apps you can download to freeze like titanium backup, android tuner...etc. Some cost money, some don't. The free ones aren't the best but somewhat work. I highly recommend titanium backup.
Yes after you root you can safestrap and be good to go!
You see the padlock symbol because the rom isn't fully stock. It's customized. The update removed your root access but not fully. Traces of superuser were left behind. You must of previously used triangle away, or an xposed module to "fake system status". Once root was removed these apps no longer work so your padlock is back.

I hadn't used xposed yet to fake the system status. Should I? Does it really matter?
I will get titanium backup.

Don't feel like an idiot. It's like you said. The at&t note 3 is a different animal. At&t has locked our bootloader and totally locked us out from modifying our device. It seems like at&t comes out with a new "you're screwed" surprise for us every update. This will be the last branded phone I buy from at&t. Boycotting is the only power we have over them.
Hi folks,
Just got my TF701T from Amazon on the $279 deal. I've connected it to my wifi but have not even set up a google account for it yet. It's doing an initial charge.
Is there any compelling reason not to let the update happen? The main short term use for the tablet will be that my 7 year old son will play games on it. Eventually, I'd still like to unlock it and maybe to a custom OS, but for now it's plain Jane use.
The only special thing I might want to do is get Helium/Carbon going so I can backup / restore game positions for him... I've got his status on several games saved from another tablet that had root and I backed them up. Would like to restore if possible. Does this require root?
Thanks. Looking forward to advice.

Hi, before giving my opinion, I would suggest you to look through the forum while you are here. That said, I have some opinions against updating to 4.4.2. The main reason is that there are some battery issues on that boot loader for some unknown reason. Also, there is no root exploit available for the 4.4.2 version without having to unlock the boot loader. I was told that 4.3 was the best to stay on right now if you can.I just recently got my tablet too from that same deal. On 4.3 there is a easy root exploit called towelroot available, so you can root without unlocking.

I also believe that carbon needs root for using it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!

Thanks. I've used Carbon and believed it requires root, too. I'm a bit surprised that Towelroot wouldn't work on 4.4.2, as it was originally designed for 4.4.2 on Samsung and similar related kernel units. I've used it on my Samsung S4, and it required being on a pretty up to date 4.4.2 build. Wouldn't work on 4.3. But it may be different on the Asus.
I saw a mention off battery drain on 4.4.2 but without details. I'll continue looking. For now I've charged then powered off the tablet. No time to set it up tonight anyway. Seems like a very nice unit though.
Thanks for your reply!

Yeah, from what I understand, towelroot worked on the galaxy s4 (my current awesome phone) because the exploit wasn't patched at that time for the phone, but sadly Asus patched it as for the 4.4.2 drain, Netflix seems to be one of the couple of apps that is really draining power. Not really sure about it, but I'm probably not going to update until the next update is released.

Thanks. I read up a bit and indeed see how they patched the exploit before the 4.4.2 build, so sadly no Towelroot in Kitkat for us, without unlocking the bootloader and voiding warranty.
Since I will be using the tablet just for kid use, 4.3 will be just fine for now. Which of the (US) firmwares is the best to flash? I'm having some trouble relating the build numbers listed to the "4.2.2 / 4.3 / 4.4.2 etc" nomenclature. I've been reviewing the Device Essential Material thread but I'm still learning the ropes on the Asus.
So as I understand it, I get the right one downloaded, unzip it (one level), put it in sdcard root directory, reboot, and it auto-applies. Is that correct? Then Towelroot,, presumably SuperSU, then I can freeze the update processes with TiBU or somesuch. IS there a good description of what to freeze to prevent further update notices?
Anything else I should know? I'm still catching up.
Marc
PS. Based on THIS POST it sounds like I want 10.26.1.18 . Do you agree?

You can use any on. I just used the one that was on my tablets before (which was US). 10.26.1.18 is the 4.3 file to grab. Yup, unzip once and put it on the sd root file. For me, when I rebooted it, it let me know that there was a downloaded update detected (NOT the normal "click this button to download the system update")(be really careful about that one). Once I tapped the detected update file, it showed me it was the 10.26.1.18 file and I told it to install it.
If you want to see what to freeze, go into the towelroot thread in the Q&A section and look for my posts on the last page or so. I was asking exactly the same thing and they answered it all for me. Good luck and let me know if it goes well!!

You got it.
The .18 firmware is the JB 4.3. But stick to your SKU (US, WW - whatever it is now).
Once rooted freeze DMClient and CMClient and you won't be bothered with OTA updates.
Thanks! It's all done.
For anyone who reads this and needs to do the same thing, it was super easy. Just plugged the new Tab into the PC via USB, opened up to "Internal Storage", copied the UL-K00C-US-10.26.1.18-user.zip file over there, and rebooted. It auto-applied, rebooted again. Eventually I had to delete the .zip file from the internal storage, because on each reboot it would notice it and spend time figuring out if it had new updates or not.
Then Towelroot, SuperSU, and used App Quarantine-Root to freeze DMClient and CMClient. Rebooted again and no more update waiting for download messages.
I'm good to go!

First, i can confirm battery issues with 4.4.2. Android sometimes does not go to deepsleep (even if there are no addition apps installed, it seems a general problem). If i charge the tablet to 100% and go to bed, on the next morning i can be glad, if i have 30% battery left. Not always, but every 2.nd or 3rd night.
Second, a little question. Becauce of this "bug" i'd like to root my tablet and use a custom rom. I would like to use this method "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604462 <- [MOD] JB 4.3+ | TF701T | Flashable Root Method v2 | Asus Stock 10.26.1.7/18
My first problem is the unlock app from asus. On the support site a text says: "1. Only suitable for Android4.2 Jelly Bean OS version" . But, according to most of the threads here, i should also work with 4.4.2??
The second question is, if the root method i just linked, works without any problems with the last asus update 4.4.2?
Using the tablet with this battery issue is horrible.
Thanks!

Reg. Battery drain: Did you run Netflix on those nights you had that severe battery drain?
Reg. Unlock: The tool should work on any fimware version. Just run it. Worst case scenario: It won't work.
Reg. Root: Why would you root the stock rom if you want to replace it with a custom rom anyway?
To install a custom rom you need to:
A) unlock the bootloader
B) flash a custom recovery in fastboot
C) create a nandroid of your stock rom in recovery
D) wipe cache, Dalvik and data using your custom recovery
E) flash the custom rom (which is rooted anyway).
For general reference on flashing custom roms to the Transformer, check out my guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688891
NOTE: This is a guide for the TF700!! The general instructions on flashing, fastboot commands etc still apply. The specifics like recovery and version, bootloader and version etc DO NOT.
For TF701 specific instructions check out the OP of the CROMi-X thread in the Development section for the TF701 here on XDA.

Thanks. Yes i know. I like the look the stock rom has. Therefore i first wanted to test, if i can stop the battery drain, if i use apps like greenify to send a few apps to deepsleep.
I rooted yesterday and tested it. Unfortunately, even with greenify i have the same problem. Every time i use the keydock, the tablet does not go into deepsleep mode. I checked with wakeup detector if i can find out which app is bad, but there are no apps which wake up the tablet more that 5 or 6 times.... If i use the tablet without the dock i dont have this problem (or just when i use netflix and dont reboot after usage)
Now i will try a custom rom....maybe it helps.
Thanks !
I appreciate any help here. My phone is stuck in limbo. At one time it was stock rooted. I was running xposed modules, so I know root was working. At one point I did a system reset losing all root capability.
I am attempting to upgrade to 5.0 and OTAs are failing. That is to be expected as I was rooted. I run rootchecker and it fails saying I am not rooted. OTAs don't work, I tried to reroot using towelroot-v3 and I get device not supported message. Can't use muniz's 5.0 method as root is failing.
How can I either get directly to 5.0 or get back to stock so I can take the OTA. I understand that means that there won't be root for me for a while, and I can live with that. I would prefer to have root capability though.
Can I get upgraded at a Samsung Experience Center in the state my phone is in?
Android Version - 4.4.2

I'm guessing you've seen this since you said you couldn't use his method, but what you need to download is the nce downgrade file. It's towards the bottom of the OP. Once your on nce you'll be able to root with towel root then go to 5.0 Muniz way.
---------- Post added at 04:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:29 PM ----------
If you downgrade to the nce you'll also be able to take the ota if you want. But remember if you take the ota you will not be able to root it downgrade anymore.
OK, that worked. Thanks. What is the difference between the stock and deodexed ROMs?

Deodex is stock but will allow you to use xposed and theme etc. Stock is just that "stock" won't be able to mod very much. Deodex is what devs use when building roms.

Figured as much. I loaded the stock as with 5.0, there is not much need for Xposed for my uses. I mainly liked being able to bypass security requirements with Exchange, but Smart Lock seems to help here. I have a Moto360 and trusted device was working, but Smart Lock is now greyed out. I do have a fingerprint registered. Wonder why I can't get into Smart Lock now.

It should work on the deodex one. I'm running TMS2.0 so I'm not sure. Might want to go to the wanam page and find out for sure. You'll need to go there anyhow to get the beta version of it.

have you been able to make any progress? I'm stuck where you are. Only I'm about to send my phone in for warranty and I want to get it back to "stock".
I want to be as close to stock as possible. Is it possible to flash (with ODIN) 100% stock rom then root with unikernel and remove all the t-mobile apps and knox etc..then go back to stock kernel and unroot? how would I unroot?

Why would you want to unroot?
I would flash CF-Auto-Root from ODIN, do what I need to do, then open the SuperSU app, scroll down, and click Full Unroot.

I want to unroot because the phone is for my gf who knows nothing about technology, I don't want her to accidentally do anything to the phone if it's rooted lol. Does CF auto root work 100% for th S6 now? I always used unified kernel.

my wife's phone is rooted and she wouldn't even know it if she seen it.
Women who don't know about root which is most in that casee could care less . As long as theyre facebook and cam works...lol .The only time they could do harm is Going to the extent of booting into twrp in which they would not even know the first thing about flashing a zip .
Root her phone debloat it and it's done.

5.0.2 was good for cf auto
Since 5.1.1 you cant downgrade and requires a rootable kernel and most people do it this way .
Just flash uni kernel v8 tar in Odin and reboot or flash twrp with Odin and then flash the unikenrel v8 zip before you reboot

Exactly. +1
Don't do it, she'll hate you because stuff isn't going to work for her.
Just disable apps she doesn't want and leave stock with everything working.
Pp.
I'd be interested in this because I need to use an app for my work that checks for root and xposed framework. But I'd still like to use a ROM with enhancements like low battery camera etc and without all the useless apps.

There are root cloaking apps which are meant to hide that you have root access. I cannot speak as to their effectiveness but they are out there.
I told my employer that I wasn't unrooting my phone and that if somebody needed something so urgently as to pull me away from my personal time when I work 9-5:30 m-f that I didn't rhink it too much to ask that said individual(s) contact me personally. They actually came to agree with me.

These don't work for the app I'm using, I looked into it. I have no use for root other than debloating the phone, and the built in features of custom roms (which I believe don't require root access).

If you use systemless root, delete /su/xbin_bind and then follow this thread's instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/passing-safetynet-root-t3307659 nothing will be able to detect root without requesting it [which you can deny] and you're golden.
