Suddenly bad battery life = battery gone bad?

Basically, a few weeks ago I flashed assonance 5.0 and my standby battery life was terrible. The battery would die by the time I got out of school which is around 7-8 hours of standby time.
So hoping to solve this problem. I flashed the captivate version of doc's rom and I have the exact same battery life. I have recalibrated the battery many times as well.
Sooo, do you think my battery has gone bad?
And if so, any good places where I could get a spare?

Many have posted eBay has some good deals.
I still suspect that many of these phones were shipped with crap batteries hence the differences with people using the same roms having much different battery life.

Have you at least tried reflashing to stock to see if the problem is with the roms or with your battery?

Not for an extended period... but the thing is I read through some of the rom threads. And if it was the rom people would be complaining about battery life, but no one is :/

kernel related or bad battery!!!!

Well i am using Glitterball's latest kernel before Firebird. Or the stock kernel that came with the Doc's Captivate Rom 7.0
Either way, there has been a huge drop in battery life and I do not think it is kernel related, because on the Assonance 5.0 rom, i was running Setiron's 1.4.7 kernel with the exact same problems with battery life :'(

This is highly dependent on how you have your settings on your phone.
1) Wi-Fi constantly looking for an active network connection? At least have it go to sleep when the phone goes on standby. I only turn mine on at home or otherwise need and have access to it. Otherwise its off.
2) GPS running all the time? Personally, I rarely ever need to use it, but it runs great when I do.
3) Display at recommended brightness or higher? Recommended or less is best as far as saving battery power. I like mine all the way down. Don't need/want it any brighter.
I even tend to use only darker wallpapers as bright and lighter colors pull more power on AMOLED screens. This makes a little bit of difference. How much I don't know, but I do know that it does. Sometimes the above settings like to change on you. It's a good idea to check 'em once in a while.
While it's usually always around 60% full when I go to bed, I still charge my cell every night.
I have found that the speedmod kernel is real good for conserving battery power. Not downing other kernels as they're all real good. Speedmod handles battery consumption better in my experience.
Have you installed any new software that might be accessing the network checking for updates/feeds, etc?

1)I always had my Wifi sleep policy on never. So its not what is affecting the battery life
2) Never have GPS on unless i need it. Heck, when i need it, it never works.
3) nothing that i didnt have before.
Basically, I haven't changed anything to cause the decrease in battery life.

Your two biggest drains on battery are WiFi (especially when consistently seeking - any new access points where you leave it on standby all day?) and your display. Could it be your battery? Sure. Go exchange it at AT&T. They shouldn't have a problem exchanging it for you

Well the thing is. I have never had this battery life with my Wifi settings left untouched. So yeah, i will probably get a new battery from AT&T tomorrow and report back if it was the battery or not :]

[Q] Looking for the most battery efficient rom/kernel combo

I am going to be traveling in Asia for a month. I don't need any of bells and whistles and I want a phone that is very stable, very energy efficient and GPS camera definitely has to works. Which rom/kernel will you recommend? any setting tricks? Thanks
I have tried Rod's MiuiMod, CM6.1.1, CM7 and many others.
I found that CM7 + WM 1/6/2011 kernel gives me the best battery life, but CM7 is still not in stable stage yet.

I have had the most battery life with Enomthers Rom, currently he is away on personal responsibilities but his latest stable rom is very battery efficient!

I have no recommendation as to kernel/rom combinations, but for long battery life I use this:

I got really tired of barely making through a day without having to recharge so I bought one of these. I got mine for $61 on Amazon and free shipping. It's 3200mah which is over twice the stock battery. My first full charge/discharge cycle I got over 34 hours of moderate usage and it's supposed to get better after a few charge cycles. It does make your phone about 30-40% thicker (comes with it's own custom battery cover), but for the battery life you get it's well worth the added thickness. I also find it's a little easier to hold on to.
Anyway, maybe not the solution you're looking for but for me it was well worth the money.

That's one big battery Thanks tho, but I want my N1 to stay small.

I second the recommendation for Enomther's. Rock-stable.

I have no combo recommendation cuz I haven't found a really good one yet. Right now I'm using cm6.1 and wild monks kernel. It's been decent for me. But I suggest using set cpu, put on power save mode when you don't use the phone. It'll be there forever. Turn off data connection and gps as well. Also using less like half the animation helps speed up the phone and saves battery too.
Ps I'm combining inexus theme too and their icons plus the animations are amazing! My phone looks colorful as hell!

Lol yea it does add some bulk but it sure is reassuring to know I don't have worry about my battery dying before the day is over. I use my phone a lot and don't have time to really recharge it much and I don't like the idea of carrying extra batteries so this works very well for me.

I haven't done too many Roms, but miui has given me the most battery life out of stock, cm and miui.
I've been travelling and I managed to get 4-5 days with minimal calls and very light usage. If you use it normally with wifi and regular calls, 2-3 days is usually the limit.
Both these numbers are with auto airplane mode during my sleep hours.

What i have heard is that CM7 is 20-30% more efficient with battery life than CM6

In my personal opinion, CM7 Nightlies are really stable. After a real heavy usage i.e. playing games, surfing, calls, messages, i get about 15 hours a day.
My phone is fully charged when I leave at 8 and by 8 pm battery will be somewhere between 40 and 45 % left.
Bugs are there with CM7 Nightlies but so far I haven't had any problems with it.

Recently I've been through about 3 roms, and of the three (rod's, micromod's own GB aosp, and leo's GB aosp, leo's gives me the best battery life.
It might be because he incorporated the battery driver, though.

I'm not sure that if my phone has a low battery life or others as well . When I go to bed , my phone was at 70% and I wake up after 8 hours of sleep . My phone dropped to 58% . Is that a normal case or should I get a new battery pack ?

Try CPU spy and see if there's any app which is keeping the phone from deep sleep.

i'm using 1800 mugen power battery. it's better on about 20/30 % and you can really see that. so if you want to buy new battery - better buy this one than original. i'm working with it for half of a year n everything is fine.
about your battery - yes, it can go in that way and its normal for our dev.

Mine is about the same as yours, 100% at sleep and 88(at times it's 87 or 86) or so when I wake up. But I think I slept for about 10h

Atm it's at 80% and it has been on battery for 13h exactly

im having issue with poor battery life on this device too up to 5hrs ~)

A tip is to disable sweep2wake if you have it enabled. it consumes a lot battery. Since I disabled it yesterday my battery gained a couple of hours battery life.

Using Longevity on CyanVivo X Rom and very impressed with the battery backup, Lasting over 18 Hours with average 3G data use and gaming before it was like 8-10 hours with Juice defender. Don't keep data on all the time otherwise use longevity Worth a try!

Imo it's just placebo effect. I actually think that they waste battery than save.

About battery saving apps:
Some might help save some of your battery, like Juice Defender, but about 100% of the stuff that an app does is something you can do for yourself.
Like dim the screen when you don't need 100% brightness, turn off data and use only GSM when you don't need to use data (and if 3G has better reception it might be worth staying on 3G though, at least in my world a better reception would mean a little bit better battery than if you changed to the network mode with worse reception) and when you don't need WiFi - you turn it off.
Using apps to kill other services and apps are not a good idea either, since some apps will only restart and restart and restart while the task killer will keep killing = both apps will drain your battery.
And by turning off both WiFi and data and the apps are well designed, they should not try to look for updates and such if there are no available internet connections.
And, by undervolting you gain more than using different apps and such and if you then learn how to set up your device in the best way for battery you will get longer battery life.
If I don't use my phone so often, I can get about 2 days with 3G/GSM + WiFi turned on all the time and mobile data connection turned on all the time. If I use it a lot I still get long enough battery time to make a full day, usually I need to charge my phone every 18-24 hours when I use it to check mail, send some texts and read news (and XDA, as the addicted person I am).
Now, I just hope that I haven't f*cked anything up - I'm just too lazy to read it through.

I bought myself a Nexus 7 about a month ago to satisfy the cravings for that Jellybean goodness. After trying several ICS/JB roms on my IncS over the past year, I decided to revert back to the CM7 Nightlies. Much to my surprise it's almost as if I forgot how blazingly fast Gingerbread was.
Given how i use my IncS on a daily basis, I seem to be averaging around 34-36 hours before it hits below 5%. It really only gets used for calls, texts and wifi tethering to my N7.

I used to average 30% battery drain per day with light use with stock GB rom and kernal, it has upped to approx 50% per day with stock ICS rom, with lOst profit's overclock kernal running at 1400 wake and 368 sleep. ( setcpu )
Not bad considering 40% increase in processor speed, but less than 20% increase in battery usage.

You must be doing it wrong, I'm on nightlies 146 with Tiamat kernel and this thing is like lightning. Battery lasts forever on moderate use about 36 - 40 hours. Lag is no where to be found.

keep in mind you have to give it a couple of hours , maybe even a day(depending on how much it has to do and your connection etc) Before the rom settles down after flashing. Then you can give your impression of it if it is laggy or not.

Charge completely and get a log using BetterBatteryStats. This will tell you, and us, what apps are eating your battery. If you can, take a screenshot of the Battery section in the settings too, with a screenshot of the details of the screen item in there too.

Have you tried changing ROMs? Or maybe it's time for you to get a new battery

i hope u r not using the refurbished one! bcoz its not having the original battery!
Tryout different ROMs and kernels! i am personally using BrainMaster's MIUI Gingerbread 2.3.7 with CM7 kernel with ondemand governer and deadline as I/O scheduler! its giving me pretty good battery life! :silly:

Just bought one "original samsung", it;s worser than my old one, heating and low capacity.

FYI - picked this up about 2 months ago, and it's been working just as well as my original battery. The charger is really cheaply made, though!

Anyone use nitrogen and pure nexus and has a preference?

I do so much work on my phone so need one that is smooth and quick with great battery. I have Pure Nexus now and it's fine but sometimes it seems to lag. Maybe they all do when jumping through lots of apps. Maybe I need to reboot daily to keep it smooth.

I don't think it should lag but you may give custom kernels a try.Lag sometimes happen due to throttling after heat.Custom kernel manage these issues at ease.

OK thank you. I have 3.10.40-PureKernel-Shamu-2.04 so it's a custom kernel meant to work fine with PureNexus I think. I'm sure it's just because I'm using nav, and other high usage apps.

IMO android uses a very smart way of managing stuff when multi-tasting to reduce lag.So it is still highly doubtable.
Why don't you try some other kernels and overclock possibly?

Right now the phone doesn't last till much past 6p so I don't want to clock even more in case it uses more battery. It used to last longer so maybe when updating to 7.1.1 with the newer Pure Nexus that took some more. Or maybe it's just a 2014 phone with high mileage =). I used to go to sleep and overnight it hardly used energy now I notice when it's just idle it can use 20% overnight, maybe more. It could be an app I downloaded is running.

I use Nitrogen and no custom kernel and get above 6 hours screen time, very good ROM!

Awesome thank you for that. I'll probably give it a try. I think it was in the top 5 custom roms on an article I read.

i finally switched to 7 on pure nexus...it's great...smooth...fast...had it running almost 300 hours without a reboot and it was still going strong...i haven't tried nitrogen...so can't say...but am happy with pn...i came from chroma rom...

Roms, Kernel, and Age are all irrelevant!
A phone will last as long as the battery allows, and that's based on your usage of the phone. Period!
You use a lot of apps, it's going to die quicker.
You stream a lot of music/YouTube, it's going to die quicker.
There is NO magic combination of Rom+Kernel that is going to magically make your battery last longer.
Your battery has X amount of usable stored electrical charge, and your phone will use it accordingly based on what you do on it.

I don't think he understands or maybe is oversimplifying what he means. The Rom and the Kernal which affect the amount of systems running will affect battery life. The age as in the amount of times you've discharged and charged your phone over months and years will affect the battery life. There are tons of variables that affect it. One can say the kernal and the rom if they are running more systems or less then that's what he means by saying if you use more apps then it uses more battery but that isn't magic that's just use. So if you put a certain kernal and rom then that is affecting what you do on it which affects battery life. The X amount of storage a battery has degrades over time. The first answer when googled is below. I probably have almost 1000 charge cycles now. Nothing I can do about that.

Not if you have a bunch of garbage apps running in the background, constantly running some kind of process to check for incoming messages/app notifications/location tracking.
You wanna know how i went from having 10% battery life at the end of a work day to having over 50% battery life???
I stopped installing **** on my phone that i didn't absolutely need.
And low and behold, my battery life "magically" increased itself.
