[Q] [HELP] Battery Draining HELL FAST - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first post . I have been searching about battery drain issues from about 2 months. Yes ! two months ! now I found it better to ask it myself. I have a GT-I9000 with 1650mA Samsung's battery, the problem is that , one point drains in around 3 - 4 minutes maximum. I am using CM10.1 , i have tried about a thousand roms , several kernels just checking for the battery life . On stock gingerbread rom i usually get 5 minutes for a single point with wifi and cellular data OFF . Now I am really exhausted trying different roms and kernel ( flashing 10 times a day and sticking to my phone checking battery , is really now pissing me off ). All I want to know is that ? Is this okay ? 3 minutes for a single point on jellybean roms and 5 minutes on gingerbread ones ? tried every kernel no oc no overclock , nothing. Is it about more cpu usage on jellybean roms ? what should i do now i really am pissed off totally. how many minutes does it take for your phone for a 1% to drop ?

If you use your phone, then it's normal that 1% drop per 3-5 minutes but if it's in sleep, well then its draining fast so i think your battery is broken.

No,when its in sleep mode 1% takes 3hrs approximately. But can you explain that why i am experiencing a large differnce on CM10.1 or SuperNexus 2.0? I tried almost every kernel .

try new cyancore kernel by mr ts, not promoting, juz it seems keeping smoothness will drain battery, try first n post a result after a day or 2 usage, n this time, please provide screenshot for battery stat.

Its normal to experience less battery on JB roms because JB as a whole is a more demanding version of Android. Project Butter- 60fps hardware acceleration- while making the phone buttery smooth, is definitely going to take a toll on both the processor and in turn the battery. There are SO many things in Jelly Bean that will definitely have a significant impact on your battery life, compared to stock Gingerbread.
I've had cases where I've drained almost all my battery just setting up my phone.
As compacity said, choose a rom and a kernel that you think you like, give it a few days (charge/discharge cycles more rather) and then post a screenshot of your battery stats. Once you install a rom in needs time to calibrate, which is done through the charge/discharge cycles. You might fnd that you actually have pretty good usage
Oh, and when you do take your screenshot, just for clarity please state whether you've underclocked, changed governor etc.

thanks for providing answeres to all my questions. Yeah , sometimes just setting the phone up takes half of the battery . :-/ .
Can you tell me what rom / kernel do you use or prefer?

Well I'm on stock most of the time because I'm out and about quite often so I need some pretty stable battery life...
But some pretty good combos I've had (and do remember that these are only prsonal results, you will have to try them yourself- it does take trial and error)
Roms:
-RemICS-JB
-Liquidsmooth
-Gamerzrom
-EXTRAordinary
-Slim Bean
Kernels:
-Semaphore
-Mackay
-Latrop
But again, purely personal experimenting and flashing. Those are only what I've gotten decent/good battery life with before

You need root permissions in order to use Battery Calibration, if i remember right.
In my personal experience i wiped only once battery stats, ad i did it via CWM. Remember to fully charge battery before doing that!

I'm satisfied with this.
JuiceDefender plus or ultimate are good (ultimate doesn't do too much more than plus other than lots of fine tweaking for those who enjoy it), and if you're rooted CPU tuner is excellent to customise frequency and governor management over the range of battery. I actually prefer the UI of CPU tuner to SetCPU, and it is free.
https://market.android.com/details?id=ch.amana.android.cputuner
IMPORTANT: wiping battery stats doesn't do anything for your battery life!!!
Hmm battery calibration not extend the battery life it only display accurate reading of your battery, your battery consumption depends upon the appication you are using and stock, although is a good result of battery although stock app is good and heavy loaded but still it have good battery beacuse of its coding in framework.odex files and it also depends on your baseband like i am using under config files
Rom- The myth ICS beta2
Rom build- Custom Stock ROM
Baseband- Previous was DDKQ6 now XWKS2
App use to save battery- Power MAx pro
My usage Type Heaviest icludes -approx 4 hour wifi,Youtube movie approx 3 hours, always on 3g connection, games 30 min or less, Music played 4 to 5 hours Calls 10-15 min, Messaging 2 hours and my battery last upto 18 to 20 hour without compromise Thus by good baseband with Custom stock rom and app u save your battery i wll upload my screenshot too
So its a good deal for me

im not one to say I have used all 3, ive only used CM7. it was good. actually even MIUI is good but u gotta know how to find your wakelocks with betterbatterystats. that way you can optimize battery life regardless of whatever rom you're on.
I could go 1-2 days on my MIUI currently FR rom, moderate usage, all my syncs are off, i manually refresh for notifications.

What do you mean "but u gotta know how to find your wakelocks with better batterystats" ? I usually dont have anything running in the background...
I have used CM 7, all MIUI, Lewa, and Mokee, and Ice BlacK too
In my view
1. CM7 have better battery life (but as I use to play 3 D games I won't prefer)
2. Second is Galnet MIUI, built by elol, decent battery life with good performance.
3. Third is Mokee, It is the best ROM for gamer and for others too who don't use to play game. It almost serve me for whole day with games, music and all mail, FB, Linkedin sync on for 24 hrs.
For me best choice is "Bumblebee" it's really a stable ROM and give's really great battery life, Best in which i have used.
In term's of Gaming this ROM is really great, it give's games extra smoothness to Game's by increasing FPS with help of it's new GPU derive.
This all make this ROM as my daily use ROM.

google xda betterbatterystats. download the app and follow the thread, those are uber battery sensitive people in the community.
so you manually sync all your apps as well? even calendar? and leave gtalk signed out?
wakelocks are what keeps the phone away from entering deep sleep. from the betterbatterystats app, if u see ur device entering 96% and above Deep Sleep after a night's full charge and allowed to idle, then good job, no matter what rom ur running u should be doing it right.
wakelocks are what cause a battery drain even when your phone is off idle while u sleep. it isnt only about background apps.
Yes,,I was use betterbatterystats,,I have managed all wakelocks and partial too,,it's give me battery life more time

post your dump here. and also at the BBS thread where u got the app.
so unless you are getting 96% and above deep sleep, id say you have not completely managed your wakelocks yet. also what are your governor and i/o scheduler settings? OC'ed at? do you have a screen off profile to lower clock speed when screen off?
battery use info may show that, but most important is u charge your phone to full, let it discharge while u sleep and wake up next day, OBTAIN 96% DEEP SLEEP OR HIGHER. figure out what are the wakelocks in BBS. if BBS is managed correctly, even if your android system is using highest %, no big deal, more importantly your battery isn't draining like mad.

Hey,Check how much you have clocked your phone at and the governer
Settings>CyanogenModSettings>Performance(press OK for the warning)>CPU Settings; If the governor is ONDEMAND, change it to Smartassv2 and increase Min value to 245. I use Apocalypse and my battery life is awesome(check the attachments).
Second lower your screen brightness simple yet effective. also increase the Max value in the CPU settings to 902 for zero lag. Also set the network to only 2G if you dont want your 3G on all the time. This saves lot of battery life too.

DCTopTeam - u can check the physical battery condition whether is bloated (feels expanded), this is an indicator that the battery is about to die
Flash a kernel, i recommend The ace kernel beta 4, it is discontinued, but has no bugs, a long battery life included

Best rom for Battery?

Hey guys. I only want to ask which rom do you think is the bettest for battery life.
Thanks.

My suggestion would be stock gingerbread with speedmod kernel k2-12, i used to get around 4 days with normal use.
That sounds nice. Do you have heavy use of yout phone? Or only deep sleep all the time?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I use it for playing games, little music, calls and messaging. Sometimes connect to Wi-fi. With the same in ICS i get around 2 days.
okay thank you i´ll try. :fingers-crossed:
to set expectations straight, expect thought about 4.5 hours nonstop usage on gb with speedmod kernel.
4 hours on ics with speedmod
alk stock dont expect more then 3 to 3.5 hours.
you only get 2 days if you dont synch, barely use phone and are in good reception area with data switched off always.
Note general tips which can be found in the 10000plus threads about battery drain and how to analyse deepsleep issues

I don't know whether you like gingerbread roms or not , but till date the rom with which I got maximum battery backup with modeate to heavy usage was CheckRom Revo HD V6. This rom never lags , best battery life , and good speed .
If you are Gingerbread hater and ICS lover , then you can try Rocketrom v7( very good battery life with the included kernel , and would be much better with Speedmod Kernel (latest version) ). And then you have CleaNote V2.30 ( V3.0 has bluetooth glitches but its faster , if you are bluetooth user i would suggest you to stick with V2.30 ) , I personally love CleaNote because it has stock look and very fluidic :good: and as the tagline says 'You dont want any theme forced down to your throat '. KingDroid are good at speed but many have reported few glitches with it , you may try it if you like ( I dont like KingDroid , its sth personal ). If you hate Samsung's bloatware then we have Cassie's XtraLite rom for your rescue :cyclops:. Its a good rom too .
Well finally to end , I use cyanogenmod 9 and i update it everyday and with each update it gets more fluid and responsive, fast , smooth . i just love cyanogenmod9 ( waiting for cm10 ).
ParanoidAndroid are for ppl who love fun , who want to showoff their phone , the ability of their phone , the sweet hybrid interface of their phone , its for geeks :-0 .
Make a choice or try all of them :good::good:

I am using CLASSIC V1+15 toggle with MOD V1 which is ICS 4.0.4, and I also updated kernel to chainfire LRG, which is more stable and smooth, battery life is excellent comparatively to all other ROMs so far.
Which is around 4% drain per hour, I have (facebook, wechat, LINE, mitalk, whatsapp, email, exchange service, maps, mixed chinese input, make your own clock) running and leaving it on idle.
Tony.

For the past 2 years of beeing a S galaxy user, I've quite looked for best battery life at top performance. Most of the time, battery life is no longer measured in "days" of usage , like we used to do with our Nokia phones. Nowadays, you ten to look at display (screen on) time , CPU profiles, and also connectivity patterns.
You can think of battery life as a factor of the above mentioned, however I think that display time is the most important parameter related to battery life. CPU profiles, connectivity, tend to work only when you have your screen on, and from my experience, you tend not to extend your usage time by more than 10-20%.
So as a conclusion, I did not expect a specific rom / kernel configuration to offer more "screen on" time but to offer a more faster way to do my tasks therefore I did more tasks in almost the same display time.
At the end of the day, it is more important how you USE your device rather than finding a "magical" combination that will increase your battery life.
KID + SpeedMod
+1 for GB (i was using checkrom but i'm sure any gb rom will give similar effects) with Speedmod.
If you make setcpu to 200mhz on screen off, i find it uses almost no power at all when it's on standby.
Like it was on 77% when i went to bed.
Woke up in the morning and it was on 78% (i was like lolwut).
Yay for setcpu.
But seriously though, any GB rom will give you considerably more battery life than any ics rom.
ROM
The best ROM for a battery-HALF ILLUSION and placed on the scale smartas governor.
Try and tell me your impressions.

Alternatively you could take the overclocked NoteCore kernel and underclock it.
The kernel is undervolted, so disabling higher processor frequencies will give you the benefits of undervolting and the benefits of underclocking.
I.e. low power consumption and low temperature.

Its not a 4.0.4 LRK issue. I was running a rooted stock build and installed NoteCore kernel without any issues. When I flashed Rocket V10 it was only then that the battery life became crippling. Shame, I love Rocket and the tweaks but guess I'll go back to stock!

Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Take a look at the NoteCore thread in the development section for the undervolt details.
The overclocked kernel is undervolted.
Install the overclocked kernel then use something like Tegrak to limit the processor frequency to 1400 or 1200 then you will get the reduced battery drain of using lower voltages and lower frequencies on your processor.
Don't change the undervolting set in the overclocked kernel add this had been optimised.

I don't think it's the kernel's fault for the battery drain.. I think it's the modem..
I have been using notecore with all the touchwiz roms no battery problems at all
RR 10 with NoteCore 13
Just installed NoteCore 13 8hr ago, and plug the power cable for charging. Still plugged now, but the SpyCPU report shows that during the past 8hr, the phone didn't go into deep sleep (while I was ) , but it stays at 100Hz.
Will unplug now and go to work for a day. See if I can get a usage report after work.
Cheers
Yep, definitely faced the same problem, which was the reason I switched to Classic Rom V4 (because of the newest firmware) but actually, though battery life is better, it is still worse than with AlBA v4...I haven't been able to determine whats behind it...

2nd of RR10 with NoteCore 13. The screen-on drainage improved. I read my whole travel time (around 1.5hr) on newspaper via 3G signal, and the battery went from 100% to 81-82%, which is acceptable for me.
Again, Deep sleep works perfectly.
I left this good rom because of this, deep sleep ok, but when the screen is on, too heavy battery drain. same with 2 kernels, should be another reason.

I tried with notecore and speedmod. I have used RR10 about 3 days to have several battery cycles. but I felt a big battery drain when using the note, even at low brightness, with nothing strange in CPUspy or BetterBatteryStats.
so I switched to JB liquid. Yesterday night. I would not say it is better for the moment to be honest. New rom, new kernel, not even a beta, so hard to compare, but you are right I feel the same today: high drain with screen on.
(but whatever the battery drain, with palm rejection available on CM9/10, I will switch again to a sammy rom)
I really cant seem to find a way to lower the screen on battery drain , its ,horrible ,
been on latest std notecore and speedmod , and with both i cant seem to get more than 2:00 - 2:30 hours of screen on time & basic use (in total of 10 - 12 hours ) , deep sleep is perfectly fine with 1% loss per hour (sometimes even less !!) , but with the screen on , battery just goes bursting -1% per minute........
we do need our devices to be used , not rested on deepsleep the whole time , otherwise this defies the whole concept of a "smartphone"....
on GB it was very good ,it got worse when Samsung introduced ICS (but was manageable) , but now on 4.0.4 , its just horrible and unacceptable!!! dunno what kind of testing Samsung does before rolling out an update...
sorry for the whole rant and rage post in there , had to speak it out cos im struggling here..
would be highly appreciated if someone can help or a suggest a 4.0.4 rom with a "reasonable" screen on drain... im even considering going back to RRv7 (4.0.3) cos as far as i remember i was getting good battery out of it (deep sleeping and screen on was great there)
cheers.
My batery drain is too much in this rom any sugest
